This adjustment is being made because many travel during the summer months and Masses during this time have lighter attendance. The 10:45 am and 12:15 pm Masses will be combined into one Mass at 11:30 am. The Sunday Mass schedule from July 3th through September 4th will be: Saturday Eve: 5:00 pm Sunday: 7:30 am 9:15 am (Spanish) 11:30 am 5:00 pm JULY 17, 2016 4 FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…… Jesus helps us to set priorities in life. Our generation is torn apart by a list of “To Dos” that just keeps growing each day, and there seems to be no time for the things we know are most important. Even many young people today have to keep a detailed calendar; between lessons, homework, sports, and even play dates, their schedules have become overwhelming. Steven Covey, in his classic work “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” says, the problem for most people is this: at a practical level, people spend too much of their time doing unimportant things which seem urgent. “The secret to a fulfilled life,” Covey said, “is to resolve to say yes to the most important things and to say no to the less important activities.” It means “choosing the better part” like Mary in today’s Gospel. Last week, through the parable of the “Good Samaritan,” Jesus helped us to prioritize among all our moral duties, giving us the first and most important thing: to love God and our neighbors. Today, in the familiar scene of Martha and Mary, where Martha serves the guests and Mary sits attentively at the feet of Jesus, we are taught to ask ourselves, “What should be the most important priority of our life?” Both things are necessary, listening to the Lord like Mary and serving the Lord like Martha, but when the Lord is present, our own agenda must be put aside to hear what the Lord wishes to teach us at that particular moment. Mary recognizes that Jesus comes to their home not to be fed, but to feed. She understands this, and sits at Jesus’ feet listening to Him as if nothing else mattered. For Mary, Jesus is worth everything. Mary chooses Jesus over everything else. Each of us is called to welcome Christ into our homes, both our physical homes and the spiritual abode of our hearts. Do we welcome Jesus and sit at his feet in prayer? Like Martha, we often get anxious and distracted trying to deal with many different demands on our time and attention. We often place our priorities in wrong order. May the Lord help us to get a clearer view of our priorities! God bless you, Fr. John Francis ST. NICK’S 100th ANNIVERSARY In 1916, plans were made to start a parish in the area of the Queensboro Hospital for Communicable Diseases, which is the location of Queens General Medical Center. Property was purchased in January of 1917 and a church was built on the corner of Parsons Blvd. and Union Turnpike by October of that same year. The area and the parish have developed into a diversified community with people of many different languages and cultures. This is St. Nick’s today! In order to celebrate our 100th Anniversary as a parish community, a different event has been planned each month to bring us together to celebrate, to pray and to work.
