Home away from home. Whether a dorm
or an off-campus residence, Holy Cross
students made themselves comfortable.
Parents had no need to worry, for dorm
life provided all the necesary furnishings
for comfort — a bed for sleeping, a chair
for sitting, a desk for studying, and maid
service for looking after us. As for the
apartment-bound, well ... they could take
care of themselves rather well!
What most represents dorm life? Is it the
blaring stereos rocking the classroom below . . . hall hockey . . . Sunday night
munchies? To an extent, yes — but even
more so it is the underlying spirit of unity
and aura of camaraderie. Afterall, where
else can you borrow a multitude of popcorn poppers ... irons ... dresses or ties
for the next night's BDB? Dorm life provides a chance to get to know (really
know) fellow classmates, underclass-and
upperclass-men and women. Through
those deep talks in the hall . .. sharing a
t.%. for "the game" or soaps ... or even in
study groups.
As for the multiplying number of O.C.
students, feeling the need to experience
"real Worcester living" by moving off the
Hill, privacy and parties were plentiful.
Saying "so long Fr. Markey," the infamous 0.C.'ers lived by their own rules.
Cooking and cleaning were added to the
day's schedule but having more than one
square room to live in made it all
worthwhile!!

Residences 103
Prestige and tradition are synonomous to the Great Alumni Hall. As
the oldest residence on campus, Alumni Hall reigns "The Quad" with
all its fond memories of past graduates frolicking the halls or streaking
through the quad on the first snowfall. A $100,000 project in 1904,
Alumni was completed in September 1905. Alumni Hall was an entity
in itself as it contained living quarters, lecture rooms for philosophy
and physics, an instrument room, a museum and laboratories. It remains exactly the same except for the brick bridge that replaced the
wooden bridge extending to the third floor. Presently, the Economics
Department has found Alumni to be a comfortable domain.

With the birth of the Student Council in
1911, came the birth of a project later
named Beaven Hall. Upon seeing the
many needs of his Alma Mater, Bishop
Thomas Beaven from the Class of 1870
stressed the importance of expansion.
Thus, a second residence hall with
classrooms was built in 1913. Well-situated, Beaven Hall lives amidst the bustle of student life, across from Fenwick
and snuggled between Dinand Library
and Haberlin Hall.

In 1920, the refusal of admission to students due to a lack
of housing, provoked Reverend James J. Carlin, S.J.,
President of the College, to
begin the inevitable expansion of Holy Cross. Rev. Carlin set his goal of $1 million
in what was referred to as
the Greater Holy Cross Campaign. Carried away by Rev.
Carlin's charisma and their
own love for the school, the
Alumni enthusiastically surpassed this goal in June
1921. A result of these efforts, the counterpart to
Alumni Hall was built and
completed in 1922. Although originally named
Loyola Hall, Carlin Hall assumes its present name due
to a decision made by the
Board Of Trustees in 1941.

The year of 1962 marked the addition of Clark
Hall to the line of residences on "Easy Street".
Clark Hall was named after Rev.James Clark, S.J.
who was President of Holy Cross during the Civil
War years 1861-67. Rev. Clark's greatest contribution to the College was his success in receiving
a charter from the MA legislature stating the College's right to confer its own degrees. Before this
time, H.C. graduates received diplomas from
Georgetown University, the Jesuit mother college
in the U.S.

Fasy Street. Its small size has
traditionally promoted a closeness for those living in it. Although the residents can no
longer claim "Hanselman Dynasty", the dorm's enthusiasm
in the Battle of the Dorms increases each year. The spirit of
Hanselman is alive — so watch
out Wheeler!! Hanselman
Dorm is proudly named after

Healy Hall stands tall and distinct as it
first welcomes students onto Easy pit
Street. Upperclassmen enjoy the privilege of living in Healy with its easy accessibility to major location points —
Hart, Hogan, and the library. In 1962,
Healy Hall was built honoringJames A.
Healy, who was valedictorian of the
first graduating class, 1849. This black
graduate later became Bishop of Portland Maine. Bishop Healy remained
close to his Alma Mater often returning
to speak at the college. One can learn
more about him in Bishop Healy: Beloved Outcast by Rev.Albert Foley,S.J. Seniors Rose Burns and Andrea LaMarre — Healy will never he the same.

Mulledy Hall, built in September, 1966, is the most recent of the five "Hill"
dormitories. It is the largest of the nine residence halls with a housing
capacity for 400 students. This dormitory is named after Father F. Mulledy,
S.J., who served as the first President of the College. His term lasted from
1843-45, after which he became President of Georgetown. Between 185457, he returned to Worcester as Prefect of Studies. Father Mulledy died at
Georgetown in 1960.

Wheeler Hall was dedicated in December, 1940, in honor of Rev.John
D. Wheeler, S.J. Fr. Wheeler faithfully gave 18 years of service to the
Cross; he was teacher, Registrar,
Prefect of Discipline & Moderator
of Athletics, and Treasure of the
College. With the onset of WWII,the
first NROTC headquarters was set
up in Wheeler in 1941. Presently,
Wheeler takes credit for providing
the only coed floor on campus.

Off-campus life — the ONLY thing to do!!
This year approximately 370 upperclassmen
waved goodbye to dorm life and marched off
the Hill for a more desired style of living.
And was that style of living oh so good! For
less money and for a little provacy, students
established residency on streets such as
Caro, College, Crompton, Chelsea, Douglas,
Fox, and CAMBRIDGE. Cooking, cleaning,
and bargain shopping quickly became a part
of everyday life. They went from Kimball's
mystery meals to a varied cuisine ranging
from burnt garlic bread to duck a l'orange
and filet mignon. They learned how to deal
with landlords, how to set up a dinner schedule and how to budget their money. But they
also learned how to throw wild keg parties
without disturbing the peace. (However,
Kinger (Caro) would beg to differ.)
Off-campus students are easily distinguished
by wearing clothes appropriate for that
mornings' weather, by carrying every book
they own to campus, by brown bagging it,
and by loitering on the library steps. But
most common to OC students is their attachment to the upper cafe. It was a home away
from home — to relax, to chat, and to eat.
And when underclassmen ask if OC living
was worth it — OC students have said that it
was worth that extra walk, that extra burnt
meal, because now they have those extra
memories. All in all it was a YOYO of a year!
