FROM THE OFFICE OF
FROM PRINCIPAL
DR. GLAZER
Dear TJ fans and athletes,
Best wishes for a terrific 2012 season! Show your
support in TJ gear and face painted in red, white,
and blue. Strive for excellence in our effort and
teamwork. Cheer loudly for our team and model
sportsmanship and integrity on and off the field.
Welcome our visitors and show them what TJ is all
about. Go Colonials!
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
AND ATHLETICS
Dear TJ fans and guests,
On behalf of our players, coaches and sponsors,
welcome to Thomas Jefferson High School for
Science and Technology!
We appreciate your attendance at this event and
your support of all those who have worked so hard
to prepare for this competition. Colonial athletics
has a tradition of excellent sportsmanship and we
ask you to help us continue this tradition. Excellent
sportsmanship is about respect – respect for oneself,
for teammates and coaches, for opposing players
and coaches, for contest officials, and for the game
itself.
At TJHSST, we view the athletic field as just one
more “classroom” where teaching and learning
takes place. We believe many powerful lessons are
taught, in practices and in games, which support the
development of leadership and interpersonal skills.
Again, thank you for your attendance and your
support of these young student-athletes… the
leaders of tomorrow.
Go Colonials!

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome to the fall 2012 sports
season at TJHSST, a Fairfax County public
school, a Virginia Governor’s School and
America’s Best High School! We extend
a special welcome to the Class of 2016,
and a big thanks to all our visitors and
loyal fans!
As a comprehensive high school, TJ
offers a quality sports program along
with its acclaimed academic programs.
And, like all other FCPS high schools,
most of the sports funding must be
raised independently of the County. The
Colonial Athletic Boosters (CAB) provides
the additional funds needed to field the
multitude of teams each year. And these
teams succeed! Last year, TJ athletes
won numerous individual all-district,
all-region and all-state honors. And TJ
continues to bask in the glow of our 2007
Boys Soccer and Cross-Country State
Championships.
Our major source of funds is the annual
CAB Membership drive. Joining is easy
on the website www.colonicalathletics.org
with a click on Booster Membership, or by
mailing the membership form, which can
be printed from the website. The website
also includes valuable information about
sports at TJ and an online catalogue
of our spirit clothing and merchandise
available for purchase.
Spirit merchandise is also displayed in
the school’s AudLob (Auditorium Lobby)
showcase, and is sold at all home football
games. All proceeds from merchandise
and food concessions go directly to TJ
Athletics, so please buy and wear your TJ
colors proudly and enjoy a snack at our
concession stands!
The CAB also needs volunteers! Getting
involved is a great way to meet other
sports parents and to see how the school
works, and is key to the success of our
athletes and programs!! Open positions
are listed on the website under Volunteer
Opportunities. We meet on the second
Wednesday of the month at 7:00pm in
the library. Please join us – we’d love to
have you!

Words from Tj’s atc’s
The Thomas Jefferson Athletic Training
Program provides valuable athletic health
care services to the student-athletes
participating in all sports. Each Fairfax
County Public High School employs two
Certified Athletic Trainers. Athletic Training
is an athletic healthcare profession
recognized by the American Medical
Association. Athletic Trainers (ATs) provide
comprehensive athletic healthcare to
athletes in many different settings.
Responsibilities include injury prevention,
immediate injury care, clinical evaluation
and diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation
and reconditioning, organization
and administration and professional
responsibility. AT have an understanding of
specific sports requirements, which enables
them to develop specific rehabilitation
exercises to better prepare athletes for
their activity. The AT also serves as a
liaison between athletes, coaches, parents,
treating physicians, and other health care
professionals.
The practice of athletic training is
regulated within the Commonwealth of
Virginia, and all ATs must be licensed by
Virginia’s Board of Medicine. ATs work
under the supervision of a physician. ATs
provide information on preventing injuries,
immediate care when injuries occur and
follow-up care and treatment within their
scope of practice. Together, the AT and
physician work to provide the highest
quality of health care possible within FCPS
athletics. The AT also keeps records of all
treatments administered, injuries evaluated,
rehabilitation programs implemented, as
well as pertinent medical information on
each athlete. Essential to providing quality
healthcare to all athletes is consistent
communication among athletes, parents,
treating physicians, coaches, athletic
administrators and the athletic training staff.
Heather Murphy is the full-time Head
Athletic Trainer at TJ. She grew up an Air
Force brat and traveled in her childhood.
She graduated from O’Fallon Township High
School in O’Fallon, IL in 1994. She went
on to study Exercise Science and Athletic
Training at Truman State University in
Kirksville, MO. After receiving her BS and
becoming a Certified Athletic Trainer, she
attended Michigan State University and
received a MS in Kinesiology. This will be
her twelfth year as an ATC at TJ and in FCPS.
She enjoys training for and participating in
triathlons, cross-stitching and playing the
violin and hand bells for her Church in her
spare time.
Tim “Mr. C” Cocrane is returning for his
second year as Associate Athletic Trainer at
TJ. Tim graduated from Longwood University
in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in Athletic
Training and is currently attending graduate
school to receive his master’s degree in
Rehabilitation Science from California
University of Pennsylvania. During school
you can find Tim working as an Instructional
Assistant in the Biology department. Tim and
his wife, Chrissy, enjoy spending their free
time visiting family and hiking with their dog,
Remi.
