Currently we have over 25 lettermen that have purchased plots in
this historic cemetery. Unfortunately, we have lain to rest our first
letterman Randy Sharpe. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the
family.

Athens, Ga., September 26, 2008 – Some of Georgia’s most prominent
citizens already have their final resting place in Athens’ historic Oconee
Hill Cemetery. At some point, they will be joined by a few more.
In a unique agreement, the Trustees of Oconee Hill Cemetery and the
UGA Football Lettermen’s Club today announced that the Lettermen’s
Club has purchased more than 500 burial spaces that will be reserved for
UGA football lettermen and their spouses and descendants.
“We will continue to serve all members of the community at Oconee Hill
as we have for more than 150 years, but we are certainly pleased that the Lettermen’s Club agreed to purchase some of
our gravesites,” said Robert E. Gibson, President of the Board of Trustees of the Oconee Hill Cemetery. “We are adding
a significant number of gravesites at the cemetery and are seeing a renewed interest in Oconee Hill by the community at
large.”
The first phase of the lettermen’s area – called Bulldog Haven – will encompass more than 500 grave spaces in the eastern
area of the cemetery. Several high profile lettermen have committed to purchasing spaces in the cemetery.
“The University of Georgia Football Lettermen’s Club and Oconee Hill Cemetery each have a long, cherished history in
Athens,” said Mack H. Guest III, president of the Georgia Football Lettermen’s Club. “We are hopeful that our agreement
with the Oconee Hill Cemetery will help continue the proud tradition of the cemetery. We think it is a win-win.”
Bulldog Haven will include a landscaped plaza that pays tribute to the
historic field and hedges of Sanford Stadium. It will also feature a replica
of UGA’s historic North Campus Chapel bell, which traditionally is rung
after each home game victory.
Site preparation for Bulldog Haven is complete, and grave spaces are on
sale for $1,500 to eligible lettermen and their families.

Oconee Hill Cemetery was purchased in 1855 by the City of Athens when
further burials were prohibited in the old town cemetery on land owned
by the University of Georgia. In 1856, the City formed a self-perpetuating
Board of Trustees to hold and manage in trust the original purchase of 17
acres on the west side of the North Oconee River as a public cemetery
for the benefit of the town. Since its founding, Oconee Hill Cemetery
has been the resting place of a number of prominent citizens of Athens
notable for their contributions to the history of the city, state and nation.
The cemetery features tombstones of soldiers from all U.S. wars, as well
as University of Georgia past presidents and sports legends, including Bulldog Haven will include more than 500 grave

1997: Harris Patel was chosen by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) as part of its 62-member medical staff.
Harris spent five weeks with the athletes, beginning with training camp in Dalian and then on to Beijing. Harris was the only

1972: Kim Braswell is proud to announce his recent retirement after 35 years in the Georgia School System. With his free
time, he looks forward to spoiling his three grandchildren, Ryker Waddy (3 1/2 yrs. old), Reagan Waddy (2 yrs. old) and
Cad Kimbrough Braswell V (1 1/2 yrs. old). Although his days coaching in the schools have come to an end, he’s got lots of
work to be done with his grand-DAWGS at home!

1970: Paul Gilbert’s son, Kyle, returned October 7th from a deployment to the Persian Gulf on the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S.
Abraham Lincoln. Kyle is a Navigator on the Super Hornet Fighter Plane and is presently based in LeMoore, California.
The best news is that Kyle and his wife Caroline and two boys --Gavin (4) and Landon (1) will be relocating to Pensacola,
FL where his next assignment will be as a navigation instructor. Paul and Barbara are glad to have them coming back closer
to home so they can see those grandsons more often.

Georgia Letterman and Athens Businessman Leroy Dukes Passes Away

ATHENS-------- Former University of Georgia football letterman, Athens businessman, and
long time Bulldog supporter Leroy Dukes died Thursday night in Athens. He was 68.
Born Sept. 13, 1939, in Jesup, Ga., Dukes lettered for the Bulldogs in 1962-63-64 after serving
in the Air Force. He then carved out a lifetime career as an Athens businessman most notably as
the owner and operator of the Athens Ramada Inn.
He was named recipient of the Dan Magill Award in 1993 presented by the Southeast Georgia
Bulldog Club for longtime support of Georgia athletics.

A graduate of Patterson (Ga.) High School, Dukes’ Georgia career included his senior year as
member of Vince Dooley’s first team in 1964. During his career at UGA, he was voted the
outstanding player in the 1962 Georgia-N.C. State game.

A 1965 graduate of Georgia (B.S. Education), Dukes served many roles in support of the Bulldogs.
Among th

were President of both the Athens Touchdown Club and UGA Football Lettermens’ Club. He was also active in numerous
other activities serving as chairman of the Athens Area All-Star Games Committee, Georgia Athletic Agent’s Regulatory
Commission, Clarke County Classic Center Authority, and the Vince Dooley 20th and 25th Anniversary celebrations.
He was recipient of many honors including the Contributions to Amateur Football Award by the UGA Chapter of the
National Football Foundation, Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) Distinguished Service Award, GACA Sam
Burke Award, and GACA Lifetime Membership Award.
His son, David, became the first, second-generation Bulldog to play for Dooley. David lettered for the Bulldogs as a
quarterback in 1984-85-86-87.
Dukes is survived by his wife, Susan, and children David, Margaret, and Andrew.

A strong, steady kid from the Patterson piney woods,
Friendly, devilish, never one to do everything he should.
Recruited into Athens to play the college pigskin game,
Win, lose or draw, Leroy was always the same.
Made for the gridiron ---- watching Leroy play one couldn’t escape
That he and that oblong football had the same shape!
But this humble, big-hearted soul had a much greater gift:
To care about others and give his friends a lift.
Fierce focus on family: devoted husband and loving father,
A wonderful human being --- like him, there’ll never be another.
Living and dying are inseparable features of life’s journey.
Many teach us how to live; few show us how to die with dignity.
Cancer may have won the earthly skirmish with his body,
Yet, his spirit was never scratched, and Heaven is his victory.
Yep, God has Himself a fast, feisty, fat fullback:
And I bet He’s happy to have ol’Leroy back in His pack.

2008 “Ole Faithful Dawg” Award
THOMAS B. MURPHY
The Georgia Football Lettermen’s Club is pleased to announce that this year Thomas B. Murphy has been selected to
receive the 2008 Ole Faithful Dawg Award. The presentation took place on September 6, 2008 at halftime of the UGA vs.
Central Michigan football game with Tom Murphy’s son, Mike Murphy, accepting the award in his honor. The Ole Faithful
Dawg Award is given by the Georgia Football Lettermen’s Club to an individual who is not a football letterman but who has
been a loyal and dedicated supporter of the Bulldog football team.
Mr. Speaker, Thomas B. Murphy
Tom Murphy grew up a country boy; he fought for his country in World War II, and became a Bulldog in 1947 when he
entered the University of Georgia School of Law; he obtained his law degree in 1949, and was later elected to the Georgia
House of Representatives in 1960; he became “Speaker of House” in 1974 and remained “Mr. Speaker” for the next 29
consecutive years, longer than any other person in the history of the United States; he passed away on December 17, 2007.
Mr. Speaker was one of Georgia’s greatest leaders during those 29 years. Zell Miller said that, “Tom Murphy was a strong,
able and complex man who had a hand in everything that happened in Georgia politics for the past half century.” U.S.
Senator Johnny Isakson, who served as minority leader under Murphy, said that “while
Murphy was loyal to his rural roots, he also supported projects that helped make Atlanta
great. Without Tom Murphy there would be no World Congress Center; no Georgia
Dome; and no MARTA.” He knew that what was good for Atlanta and its metro area
was good for the whole state…he worked diligently to make it what it is today…the
economic hub of the entire southeast. He pushed for a road system that helped promote
economic development all around this state.
Mr. Speaker was loyal to his belief that state government must serve the
needs of all its citizens…especially little children, the elderly, and those who
could not look after themselves. Together with Governor George Busbee,
they initiated the “rainy day fund” from state revenues, which remains
today a model for all levels of government in fiscal responsibility and
accountability. His leadership style was to be steady, firm, and fair. He was
tough…just like the Georgia Bulldogs he loved so much. He was a quiet, yet
loyal, supporter of education and the many projects of the Board of Regents;
both administrators and staff, especially coaches and athletes, were always
welcome at the Capitol and on the floor of the House during his tenure.
A profoundly devoted family man; he adored his wife of 36 years, Agnes,
and was proud of his daughters Martha, Lynn, and Mary and his son, Judge
Mike Murphy. He had a standing invitation to the President’s box and was a frequent guest with his youngest daughter, Mary
or with his son, Mike; he never attended the pre-game reception to handshake and back slap with the president’s guests,
preferring, instead, to go directly to Sanford Stadium to watch the “Dawgs” in their pre-game warm-up…it was a source of
special pride for him when his only son, Mike, made the 1965 Georgia Freshman team of 1965 as a “walk-on”.
Like the Bulldogs, he was completely focused on the game at hand…he never bragged or desired to chat or politic
with other guests trying to corner him. There can be little doubt that when he arrived at the pearly gates last December,
he took off his Stetson hat, shook hands with the Lord and asked – “How ‘bout them Dawgs!” --- We miss you Speaker
Murphy….

The Shannon Mosher Memorial Foundation, Inc.
(www.shannonmosherfoundation.org) was established by Stuart
Mosher (‘65-‘67) in 2000 as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity to
honor the life of his daughter, who died May
20, 2000 from complications related to her 15month battle with leukemia, which included
an unrelated bone marrow transplant.
A charity golf tournament was held
in Ocala, FL on May 3, 2008 to benefit the
Foundation and, through the generous support of almost 70 golfers and
some corporate sponsors, over $3,700 was raised that the Foundation
will redirect back 100% to leukemia patients as reimbursements for
expenses not covered by their insurance. Also, on May 14, 2008, the
annual combination blood and marrow/stem cell donor registration
drive in Shannon’s memory was held at Hebron Baptist Church in
Dacula, GA and 32 new donors were added to the National Marrow
Donor Program (NMDP) Registry.
The Foundation has had the privilege of providing almost $25,000
of financial assistance to 32 leukemia patients, and we have also cohosted and/or assisted at 12 combination blood and marrow/blood
stem cell donor registration drives, during which 980 new volunteer
donors have been added to the national registries.
You can help in 3 key ways: (1) sign up to be a marrow/blood stem
cell donor on one of the national registries; (2) make a tax-deductible
contribution to the General Fund of the Foundation (100% of these
funds are redirected back to leukemia patients as reimbursements
for expenses not covered by their insurance); and (3) if you know
someone with leukemia, tell them about the resources available at
