(Exodus 16). I find the lament of the Israelite people so reminiscent of ourselves. Often we are not satisfied with what we have. It is hard for us to truly be satisfied. We seem to believe we need “more” in order to find fulfillment, happiness, and contentment. What makes the words of the “people of the exodus” so significant is that God had just set them free from slavery, delivered them across the Reed (Red) Sea and now they are a little hungry, and all they can focus on is their stomachs. It is amazing “how our lack of being satisfied” with what we have as in the case of the Israelite people can over-ride the unbelievable gift of their freedom! They could not appreciate what they had received and now possessed. They failed to see where God was leading them and where he wanted to take them. How reminiscent is this of ourselves? Unfortunately, the Gospel reflects the same attitude. Undoubtedly “original sin” does transcend time, for the scenario is identical. The crowds had just been “miraculously fed” with the life of God. It simply was not sufficient. They began chasing after Jesus because “they wanted to see what more they could get out of him.” Jesus recognized this and says: ...you are looking for me not because you saw signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled (John 6). In other words, the life of God I shared with you was simply not enough. Cannot you not see I was offering you the ultimate freedom that will bring fulfillment, happiness and contentment, but similar to the Israelite community, the crowds personal consumption with themselves only served to skew their vision that whatever “more” they wanted would eventually leave them “hungry” once again. I believe these two stories certainly characterize how many of us are often dissatisfied with what we receive, what we have, and what God has given to us. John amplifies this malaise of our lives when he says: ... do not work for food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life (John 6). Somehow many of us have bought into the notion that “more is better” and the more we have the more we will be happy, so many aspects of our lives and our happiness is dependent on “comparing ourselves with others,” which leads only to greater dissatisfaction, a greater need for more, resentment when we do not get what we want, and anger and frustration with the others because we cannot accept that what we have is sufficient. “Eternal” when it comes to things “we desire” is not part of our way of thinking and when we live our lives in this way, what we are saying is what God has provided me-us is insufficient, not enough, incomplete. Personal fulfillment for us comes only in the guise of what “fills our bellies” at the moment. Just as with the Israelite community and with Jesus, God does make a myriad of gestures to us and we may think the struggle might be in the “figuring out” or in “the recognizing” of what God wants and has given to us, but that is not where the real problem lies. It was obvious what God was doing for the Israelite people, “for God’s sake!” He had already set them free from bondage and led them through the sea, (this was pretty obvious) and Jesus gave the crowd the ultimate gift of God’s life (both in his teaching and the bread he gave them). The real issue is what lies behind what is “this more” that leaves us dissatisfied and malcontent and leads us to believe what God has given us is simply insufficient. It seems to me it is precisely “what we go after” in life and how we go after what we think we need speaks volumes of the real-truth behind “our faith” and the real reason we go after God. This is what makes these two stories so sad. God for so many of us (like the Israelite people and the crowd) has become a means either to an end or is someone whose giving is inadequate in regards to what we believe will satisfy us rather being for us “not the means” but our ultimate end. Father Michael-Dwight 2 We wish to thank those who have made their Stewardship Pledge to the Pastoral Services Appeal! $89,870 have been pledged of which $55,086.81 have completed their stewardship. Thank you very, very much! As you can see, we have almost met our goal. Please pray about your commitment to this year’s PSA so we can meet our assessment before the end of summer. SCHOOLBEGINSONAUGUST31st,2015 CALLNOWTOENROLLYOURSTUDENTTODAY!! www.Stangelabrea.org. 6 BackPack for success 2015 A.C.T. Campaign The reality of poverty in Orange County is that it affects roughly 100,000 children everyday. More than one-third of children in Orange County enter school with significant deficiencies in language, early literacy skills and motivation to learn, placing them at considerable risk for developing long-term reading difficulties. The low-income students start the school year with none or inadequate school supplies, putting the student and the teacher at disadvantage from the very first day of school. Children living in poverty should have an equal opportunity in education which begins by first making sure they have the tools that are vital to their success. Therefore, the A.C.T. Office will be collecting backpacks and school supplies for the coming school year. Please bring your donation to the A.C.T. Office. Office between the hours of 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM Monday, Wednesday or Friday . 7 Called and Gifted Summer is a wonderful time to pause, reflect and renew. This is a good occasion to consider setting aside a little more time for personal prayer. Just sit quietly with an open heart to hear what Jesus may be saying to you at this time in your life. Parents are called to stand in the place of God in their families. Many parents do not realize they have been especially equipped to do so, by the sacramental graces of marriage and in part by gifts of the Holy Spirit given to all Christians at Baptism. How can you discern the gifts that God has given you for the sake of your family? How can you help discern the gifts God has given to your children? A program, The Called & Gifted Workshop is coming on September 19th, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM in our parish that will teach all Christians about the gifts of the Holy Spirit which have been given and are already at work in our lives. Everyone is invited to participate. Is the Lord inviting you into a deeper relationship with him? Have you been trying with the idea of becoming more involved in the life of our parish…volunteering in an outreach ministry, joining a prayer group or maybe taking a faith based class? Maybe there is a friend or acquaintance that seems to be searching for something more in their life, someone that you might reach out to and invite to church. It may even be a family member that is just waiting to be asked. Summer movie nights This Wednesday, August 5th, at 7:00-9:00 PM we will be showing Babette’s Feast (1987 G). All are invited to this FREE event and refreshments will be served. Our parish is very blessed to have many ministries and ministers that are here to assist you on your journey of faith. Maybe it’s time for you to stretch a little and reach out in faith! If you like more information on one of the many ministries here at St. Angela’s or you know someone that you think may be interested in becoming Catholic, please call Mary Cobb in the Parish Center Office at 714/529-1821 ext. 113. ADULT CONFIRMATION If you are 26+ and baptized Catholic or in another faith and wish to prepare for the Sacraments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation please contact the coordinator. For more information regarding the above or to register, please contact Andrea Draper at: 714/529-1821 ext 136 OR amd.stangela@gmail.com. Bereavement Support Group The Bereavement Support Group will meet Thursday, August 6th, at 7:00 PM in St. Paul room. A guidance professional facilitator will be present for those who have recently experienced the death of a loved one. For more information contact Beulah Eckes at 714/529-0639. Adoration chapel Are you good at praying? Do you pray often? Many times a day? You know, you should pray all the time. Even at stoplights when waiting for a light to change, you can say a short prayer, such as,'' Sweet Jesus, Sweet Mary. I love you. Save Souls!" Sacred Heart Holy Hour of Reparation Thursday, August 6th at 7:00 PM in the Adoration Chapel St. Clement of Alexandria tells us, " Even if we speak with a low voice, even if we whisper without opening the lips, even if we call God only from the depths of the heart, our unspoken word always reaches God and God always hears." So, my friends, a great way to pray is to come to the Chapel and pray, pray, pray! You will be amazed at the blessings you will receive. The Lord's Chapel is open Monday - Friday from 9:00 AM to midnight. Don't forget to become an adorer, one who has a designated time to pray in the Chapel for an hour a week, (and by the way, our adorers love doing this). Call Irene at 714/526-6011 and remember always pray, pray, pray! “It is altogether impossible to enumerate the heavenly gifts which devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus has poured out on the souls of the faithful, purifying them, offering them heavenly strength, rousing them to the attainment of all virtues…This devotion is a gift to us from God.” (Pope Pius XII, 1956 Encyclical) 8 We invite you to join in honoring the Sacred Heart of Jesus during this Holy Hour of Reparation. Prayer books will be provided. Please contact Joan Hosek at 714/983-7560 or joanhosek@att.net. Please pray for those suffering the effects of terror and war, and for the safety of our soldiers & their families.
