New friends have been made and old friendships renewed. Routines, expectations, school procedures and schedules have been established, and all are looking forward to an exciting school year. For those of you who are first time parents of school age children, we welcome you to our school. We also welcome new families to our school and community, and look forward to getting to know each of you throughout the school year. Please know our door is always open to positive comments and any concerns you may have! Cross Country Fun!! Cross Country was off and running the first week of the school year! The summer weather has extended into September making it easy and enjoyable for the cross country members to practice. Thank you to coaches, Mrs. Waldbauer, Mrs. Ball, Mrs. Unterschute, Miss Frick and grade 2 intern, Miss Hickie for motivating the students to diligently practice each day. The first meet of the season was held on September 14 at Deer Park and the second meet was on September 25 in Saltcoats. We commend our students for exhibiting excellent behaviour and sportsmanship. The students were also respectful of the site and made sure garbage and recyclable materials were deposited in the appropriate places. We trust that you had a chance to visit with staff and other families, as well as taking home an important information package from your child’s/children’s teachers about classroom procedures and expectations for the year. We appreciate that you viewed this as an important evening and thank you for attending. Congratulations to the Lechner, Lundgren and Griffin families who won the Twitter contest. Each family won $10.00 towards the Sept. Scholastic Book order. REAPING THE REWARDS! The ‘walking school bus’, initiated last year, has become increasingly popular with the students both to and from school. The students are ‘picked up’ on a route that follows 5th Ave., down to Prince Edward St. and then continues on 3rd back to the school. For every ride on the ‘bus’ students earn 1 moken. Students who ride their bike in the morning receive 2 mokens. Prizes and certificates are awarded once the students reach a milestone of 25 mokens and higher. What a great way to promote and encourage a healthy lifestyle, while at the same time connecting before and after school with the students! Please note that the walking school bus will be cancelled if the temperature is -29 or colder (with or without wind-chill). If it is cancelled in the morning, it will be cancelled at 3:30 as well, no matter what the temperature is. The grade 4s headed back out to the Pizza Farm this fall to harvest what they planted last spring in grade 3. The Pizza Farm program is offered through Agriculture in the Classroom and has students plant produce in the spring that they'll later harvest and turn into pizza ingredients. The students enjoyed looking at the progress their basil, oregano, peppers and tomatoes made over the summer. They were also given the opportunity to learn more about the dairy and pork industries as well as our local watersheds. The following day we had a representative from AITC come and make homemade pizza with the students from scratch! What a fun and delicious experience! A LEGACY CONTINUES TOONIES FOR TERRY Our annual Terry Fox Walk will take place on October 2nd beginning at 1:35 p.m. The walk will follow the walking school bus route and we are hoping for wonderful fall weather! Please join us for the walk if your schedule allows. We are pleased to support Terry’s legacy and know you will be instrumental in helping us by donating a toonie for each child in your family. If we reach our target of $400.00 Mrs. Wotherspoon has cheerfully agreed to dress in a costume for a day and visit each classroom to read a story. Let’s reach that target! Book Fair The first Scholastic Book Fair of the school year will be held from October 5-8th. Please feel free to browse the Book Fair from 8:30-4:00 each day. Please note the Book Fair will be closed during recess and lunch times and will close October 8 at 12:00 p.m. A percentage of total sales is given back to the library, allowing Mrs. Braun to build an array of genres for our school and students. Thank you for always supporting our Book Fair. Looks Who’s Driving! Fun at the Pizza Farm!
