clothes to show their support for this anti-bullying
initiative.

jfrisby@sohs.school.nz so that your details can be
updated on our system.
Thank You
This annual campaign encourages New Zealanders to
stand together and take action against bullying. The day
provides a good opportunity for us at school to
continue to take a proactive approach, discussing what
bullying is and how students may get help.
By wearing a pink shirt students show their support to
others and their willingness to work together to prevent
bullying. A gold coin koha will be collected in form
time to support anti bullying initiatives.
Further information may be obtained from the
website pinkshirtday.org.nz Peer mediators at school
will be providing further information to our students.

Year 13 students making props in the holidays for Stage challenge
From the Sports Coordinator
Winter sports are all either underway now, or starting
this coming week. SOHS is so lucky to have a dedicated
team of teachers, parents and friends who take up the
coaching, managing and supporting roles of these
sports. I will leave those roles to them, but I remind all
the students to take care of the uniforms they have been
loaned this year, and remind you all to get your subs paid
ASAP.
There are many sporting events other than the weekly
team sports coming up this term as well, including
swimming sports, cross country, and both Taieri and
Gore Interchanges. We would encourage your support at
all these events.
Congratulations to the following SOHS students who
took away awards from the Otago Representative Touch
Prizegiving in the holidays; Junior Referee of the Year:

Valli, Under 15 Boys Workhorse Award: Logan Wilson

Girls Football
The girls football season kicked off yesterday with the school now having two teams. In Balclutha our first eleven
came up against the strong Otago Girls team and despite looking threatening early conceded a goal towards the end
of the first half before finally losing 4-0. Hayley Witt and Amanda White showed good strength in defence while
Abby Edwards was strong in goal.
Meanwhile, the second eleven, including eight new players traveled to Dunedin to play Kaikorai Valley. After
holding our own for 15 minutes we went a goal behind but this spurred the team on to trying harder and we scored
five unanswered goals to win the game 5-1. Player of the match was Lilly Paterson who regularly bet opposition
players and set up a number of attacks while Olivia Clarke top scored with 2 goals.

SGCNZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival
On April 1st, SOHS entered three Scenes (with 16 students) in the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival. They performed to
a packed house at the Kings and Queens High School Auditorium. The scenes were very well received by the audience
and judges. SOHS won two awards, a school award for ‘Best Creative Choreography’ and Liam Whitmore won the
‘Outstanding Student Director’ award. This is our third year entering the competition. Thank you to all the parents and
staff who supported us on the night and throughout the rehearsal process. If you are interested in seeing the scenes they
will be performed again in Arts Week.

Boys Football
The football season kicked off last Saturday with the
'Youth' (senior boys) team playing two grading
matches. Whilst both matches ended in defeat, it was
great to see the boys playing football on a Saturday. A
few things for this week:
This week, the Youth team has two more grading
games on SUNDAY. Both matches will be played at
Bayfield Park, with our first game beginning at 11:40
(v Mosgiel Pukekos) and our second starting straight
after at 12:20 (v Northern Black). The boys will need
to be at the bus bay ready for a 10:00 departure.
The 14th grade team plays its first game next Saturday,
2 May - details TBA. Mark informs me that the boys
have been training hard and are ready to get stuck in.
Subscriptions for the 2015 season are payable. The cost
for the season is $80, which should be paid to
Balclutha Junior Football Club. The account number is
03-1734-0043119-00. Alternatively, boys can give
their payments to me and I will ensure that they make it
to the club.
The cost of transport for each away match will be $10
per player per game. Players can pay for each trip or
families can elect to have trips charged to their school
account. I will be maintaining a spreadsheet to keep
track of all payments.
Once the draw for the season comes out, I will be
sending a Google doc to student emails for families to
write down the dates that they will be available to take
extra players to games. A roster will then be created. It
is fair enough that any family that takes players more
than once will receive a contribution to their fuel costs.

‘Chopper’ Mufti Day
Next Friday (1st May) we will hold the first of two mufti days for the term.
The ‘Chopper’ Mufti is in support of the regional Rescue Helicopters.
Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation and all funds will be given to the Otago Rescue Helicopter.
Field of Remembrance
During the week, the SOHS Field of Remembrance (FOR)
was constructed by students in 10WD. The FOR Trust
provided NZ schools and communities with a series of
white crosses to commemorate the 18,000 NZ soldiers who
gave their lives during WW1.
The FOR was a focal point during our ANZAC Memorial
Service held yesterday. Following the service in the Hall,
the wreath was carried to the FOR and laid after a minute’s
silence was observed.
The FOR will remain at the front of SOHS until the end of
the month.
