It has been an eventful week with more of the Year 8s having their rafting experience. There was a
wonderful photograph of Hamish Maunsell on the front page of the Otago Daily Times. On Wednesday
evening we had our Gateway graduation. Watching the students get up and speak in front of their
peers, families and employers about their experiences and their personal growth was gratifying. This
year Mrs Sue Craigie has taken on the role of Careers Advisor and Gateway Co-ordinator from Vicki
Wilson who left at the end of last year. The students expressed their gratitude to Mrs Craigie and the
other staff in the department for all of the work that they had done.
We had our Talent Quest on Thursday and on Thursday evening the Year 11 and 12 Drama students put on their
production of scenes from Arthur Miller‟s The Crucible. This was as powerful as I remembered it. The tension was
built up cleverly and there were a number of strong performances. The scene where „the children‟ were in court
and pretended to be bewitched was spine tingling in its intensity. Congratulations to the students and Ms Buchan.

Africa, here we come!
Sixteen Year 10-12 students are about to make history as they become the first group in the
lower South Island to travel overseas on a World Expedition Challenge.
For 28 days from 22nd September 2012 the group, with two teachers, will travel to Namibia and Botswana to
undertake an adventure Mr Bolton has dubbed “Outward Bound on steroids”. The trip has four parts to it:
Acclimatisation where they get used to their new environment; Physical Challenge which will be an expedition of
6-7 days; Community Project which will involve working with a local community for a week; and finally a few days
of rest and relaxation before the long haul home and straight back into Term 4.
With the help of an in-country expedition leader, challengers (the students) will be responsible for all parts of their
expedition right down to the organising of their transport, buying their food and staying within their budget. As a
group they are about to start planning the itinerary, and they are all trying to raise the necessary funds.
So, we have 16 very talented, highly motivated and hardworking students who are looking for work. If you have
any work that they could do, or other offers of help the group would love to hear from you. Contact Mr Bolton or

Friends of Taieri College Fundraiser
“Christmas Raffle”
We are once again having our annual Christmas raffle as a fundraiser. Tickets are just $1 and there are five
prizes to be won. The funds raised are used for a variety of projects in the College e.g. Wearable Arts Show,
Science Fair prizes, Young Writers Awards, Blues Evening prizes, College Production, Stars on Stage, College
Magazine and Sports equipment. One card per family is being issued this week, to the youngest sibling in the
family. Senior students receiving reports will have their raffle card enclosed with their report.
We have a grocery hamper as one of the prizes and would appreciate a donation of a non-perishable food
item from each family. These items can be handed in to the College Office.
Every student who returns a sold card will go into the draw for a number of Subway vouchers. There are
prizes for each year level. The more cards a student sells the greater chance of winning a voucher. Extra
raffle cards are available from the College Office.
Raffle cards and money are to be returned to the College Office by the 28 October 2011. If you are unable
to sell any tickets please return the unsold card by this date also. The raffle will be drawn on the 14 November
2011.

Sports Council Golf Tournament

This year we as a Council are doing the catering to return as much profit as we can back to the College. If
anyone can help with donations of meat that we can roast ie beef, lamb or pork or any ham please contact

Year 8 Camp Fundraiser
This year we are selling Pavlovas as a fund raiser for the Year 8 camp to Queenstown.
Each pack of 12 sells for $12. The profit on each pack is $6. These funds will go towards your child‟s camp
account balance. One order form has been issued to each pupil. They will be given two weeks to sell and
return the order form and money to the College Office. Delivery dates are on the order form.

Petanque Tournament
Well done to Esmey who competed on Wednesday 5 October
at Caversham, Dunedin in the Schools‟ Petanque Tournament.
She competed with another student Taylor from Dunedin North
Intermediate to win overall. She also has been selected to
play in the National Youth Petanque Tournament which will be
held over the school holidays. She received a medal and a
trophy for her efforts.
Justin Ives
Ex student Justin Ives returned to the College last week to present one of
his Japanese playing jerseys.
Justin had been picked in the Japanese Squad for the Rugby World Cup
but an injury picked up before the tournament was not diagnosed and
Justin has needed a knee reconstruction.
The jersey has been signed by this year‟s Rugby World Cup Squad and will
be one of the items up for auction after our golf tournament on October
28.
Year 12 PED Trip
Last Sunday 45 students plus staff set off for Naseby for 3
days of mountain biking. The trails ridden were a good
range from relatively easy to technical. On the final day
the students were put through a time trial as part of their
NCEA. The fourth day of the trip involved a rafting trip on
the Taieri River including the Taieri Challenge. This tested
the students team work, leadership and safety. These
aspects were all assessed as part of the students‟ NCEA.
The trip was tough at times but our students rose to the
challenges put in front of them. It was thoroughly enjoyed
by students and staff alike.

Taieri Plains Junior Touch Trials
In Association with Otago Touch, Taieri will now form its own Zone of Otago Touch and will be called The
“Taieri Plains” region. This was trialled last year and worked successfully and this year will be extended to
further age groups depending on numbers.
The Taieri Plains team will play in the Otago Touch Trials in Balclutha later this month 6th November. Taieri
Plains Zone will include schools from the greater Taieri area and Fairfield all are welcome
Touch Players are invited to trial for the Taieri Plains representative teams for 2011 in the following age
brackets.
Under 11 Mixed, (born 2001, 2002, 2003)
Under 13 Mixed, (born 1999, 2000)
Under 15 Boys, (born 1997, 1998)
Under 15 Girls (born 1997, 1998)
Under 17 Boys (born 1995, 1996)

All players must be at the qualifying age as of December 2011
Teams will be independently selected and will train during the weeks leading into the Otago trial
