Division of Student Affairs Student Affairs Co m m itee September 18, 2003 Meeting Minutes Present: Excused : Guest: Joseph Cicala (chair), Robert Chapman, Katie Daniels. Donna Fiedler. Evelyn Klein. Kev in Martin. E rin Oakes. Nikki Schwartz, Ray Shay. Jen Weldon. Alice Carcilli. Margaret McCoey, Lane Neubauer. Annette O'Connor. 1. Dr. Cicala offered a moment of re lection to begin our meeting. 2. We reviewed our statement of charge and membership, and new members were encouraged to review the archive of updates regarding our work in 2002-2003 that appears in the TBA~E section of the Division of Student Affairs website. 3. Our guest today, Professor of Biology Annette O'Connor, presented for our consideration, as she also was invited to do for the Division of Student Affairs Leadership Team on September 17, the idea that we broaden training and/or information-dissemination regarding our disciplinary systems and procedures to include, potentially, a small corps of faculty and staff members who might complement the work of our current judicial officers by serving as informed advocates and/or advisors for students who might he involved in disciplinary situations. The idea, which Prof. O'Connor and Dr. Cicala discussed informally last year and which Dr. Cicala subsequently reviewed with one of our Judicial Boards, was received positively by our committee, as it had been by the DSA Leadership Team. The latter will develop one or more operational plans, for discussion with our committee and others, and believes this can be a valuable complement to the work that already has been underway over the past few years to broaden and deepen the involvement of Lasallians beyond the Community Development unit and the Dean of Students' Office in our primarily educational judicial system. The HAC discussed options as to how to proceed. Although the HAC recognizes it serves in an advisory capacity, the committee believes this is a serious health issue that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Several members of the committee report having been approached by staff and/or faculty asking about the status of moving the HAC recommendations forward due to their personal health concerns. Faculty and staff have reported to the HAC members that they avoid certain areas when possible to avoid second hand smoke but often don’t have a choice but to expose themselves to cigarette smoke due to individuals smoking in their offices.
