Case study
Convergence hub
Jeuxvideo offers the best browsing
experience on its site with FranceIX
L’odyssée interactive Jeuxvideo.com is a precursor
in the online media industry. Born in 1998, at a
time where internet was only starting to reach the
mainstream, this company of around 40 people
located in the heart of Auvergne in France carries
out two businesses:
• Online magazine: the editorial team of
jeuxvideo.com tests new games, writes about
them but also covers international gaming
exhibitions such as Paris Games Week, Electronic
Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, Gamescom in
Cologne and Tokyo Game Show.
The website completes its content by producing
original video content about video games.
• Forum: the website gathers a very active
community of gamers on its forum.
With about 300000 new posts each day in average,
jeuxvideo.com ranks among the largest French
forums alongside doctissimo.fr and aufeminin.com
for instance.
The cumulative audience of the website exceeds
the one of L’Equipe. This french audience comes
primarely from France, Belgium, Switzerland,
Luxembourg, Canada with its french-speaking part
Quebec and since recently, from North Africa.
Jeuxvideo.com now continues its development
on mobile and hosts more and more HD videos on
its website.
NEED
Since its launch, Jeuxvideo.com decided to monitor its
site and its outgoing traffic to bring full satisfaction to the
webusers during their visit.
• Ensuring the best quality of surfing
Although the access to jeuxvideo.com website is free,
the company pays attention to pages speed load. Why
insist on this point in particular?
A lot of studies proved that a good surfing experience
increases the time spent on the website and the number
of visited pages.

• Inserting HD videos while keeping latency low
Along the years, the online media noticed how much the
videos were more popular than the written articles.
Because the visitors are more attracted to videos,
jeuxvideo.com started hosting games trailers and then
moved on to produce its own videos. Step by step, the
quality of these videos went higher (720P, 1020P…)
which led to increasing capacity.
Through its own network and with the service of
France-IX’s interconnection, jeuxvideo.com is able to
maintain a high quality on its website, even when the
data the website hosts keep on rising.

France-IX case study
SOLUTION
When the PaNAP internet exchange merged with France-IX in
March 2011, Jeuxvideo.com made the decision to keep its
port connected on France-IX.
The website initially took a 10Gbps port with a traffic up to
2Gbps which was a new offer in the peering market. With this
solution, jeuxvideo.com tried out the return on investment and
went on to establish peering sessions, enabling it to upgrade to
a line-rate 10Gbps later on.
Due to its business, jeuxvideo.com is mainly interested
in connecting to internet services providers such as
Bouygues Telecom, Numericable or Google, all these
three being connected to France-IX with multiple
10Gbps ports. Establishing direct peering sessions
with them over France-IX ensured a low latency for the
webusers.
But the online magazine also displays a public peering
policy and therefore uses the routes servers service in
order to join 90% of France-IX’s members via a single
session.
EVOLUTION
If nowadays jeuxvideo.com is written in french, the company has enjoyed a noticeable increase of its audience worldwide.
North Africa, and more precisely Morocco, stands out as the biggest increase. Consequently, jeuxvideo.com places
hopes in France-IX’s point of presence in Marseille to reach North African operators in the future, while it currently uses
IP transit to do so.
Jeuxvideo.com’s global traffic has grown 20 times bigger over the past 10 years. And this rapid pace could only accelerate
as HD videos including 4K flows could become the next big thing within a few years.
Jeuxvideo.com continues to keep a close eye on its traffic growth curb so its website performances remain the same if
not better.
