HPAF Needs Your Help - Horse Protection Association of Florida
Horse Protection Association of Florida Number 2 2011 Newsletter HPAF Needs Your Help Donations were down 50% throughout the year, and then in August dropped another 50%. We are so grateful to the wonderful people who have donated throughout the years. You have made it possible for HPAF to help so many horses. Our wonderful anonymous donor is once again offering to match donations up to $15,000 between now and December 31st. This generous gift along with the matching gifts will see HPAF through the end of December. To continue on to 2012, we will need a miracle. Miracles have happened to HPAF and the horses many times over the past twenty years. Hopefully there are more in the future. One bequest could make all the difference. Please remember HPAF and the horses in your estate planning. Your prayers and positive thoughts are needed now. Lets all think positively that we will be blessed with yet another miracle and that HPAF will receive donations which will allow us to continue helping horses in need. ~ Polo ~ Polo was rescued July 24th, July 25th 2011 upon arrival at HPAF August 22nd - 1010 lbs 154 pound gain emaciated, unable to rise on her own, and near death. Polo was lifted with a sling and tractor twice in the first week at HPAF. Dr. Joan Gariboldi’s intensive care and prescribed feeding program, around the clock feedings, coupled with Polo being a smart, resilient mare with a strong will to live made her survival possible. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to save her: Dr. Gariboldi, Dr. Barry David, Dennis Morgan, and the HPAF staff. Beach made great progress at the colt starting and needed continued riding. Thanks to these two wonderful ladies Beach has gotten individual attention and riding time that made her more adoptable. Thank you ladies for all of the time and care that you have given Beach. Thank you to Karen and Butch Silva of Hickory Meadows Farm for taking in Gypsy after her adopter passed away suddenly. These wonderful folks picked up Gypsy on short notice and provided for her at their beautiful farm in Oxford. Gypsy’s legs had become horribly crippled from arthritis and it soon became time came to let her go. These kind and caring horsemen helped so much by providing everything this sweet old mare needed through their expert care and by helping her go when it was necessary to relieve her suffering. Bless you Karen & Butch, we are so grateful to have caring friends like you. Thank you to Janet Johnson of Jacksonville who fostered the yearling Thoroughbred gelding Patrick from January through June. Janet and her husband picked up Patrick in Micanopy, provided fabulous care for him, sent updated pictures and reports regularly and even delivered him to his new home. Bless you Janet for taking such wonderful care of Patrick until he could find a permanent home. Thank you to Cynthia & Jeff Frye. This nice couple recently moved to Ocala and came to HPAF straight away to volunteer and what volunteers they are! Their special area of interest is events, which they worked for ERAF in South Florida before moving North. Cynthia and Jeff have been a godsend, working every Tack Shack sale to raise funds for the horses, setting up and manning a table at horse events, and we don’t even have to beg for them to go! Above and beyond that priceless help, they have also generously fostered the recently rescued horses Tara and Lacy who we could not have rescued without their generosity. Thank You to Kathy Pennenga for maintaining the HPAF Facebook page and for fostering Zen. Kathy, along with Missy Clapp and Stacy Ewing, has been playing with Zen using Parelli Natural Horsemanship methods which have helped him to heal and regain his confidence. Thank you Alpha Boost Juice for their generous donation of their excellent product for the starved and debilitated horses. We have used Alpha Boost Juice for years with the malnourished and starved horses that come in to HPAF. Please go online and read about all of the excellent benefits of Alpha Boost Juice with the power of spring grass. www.alphaboostjuice.com Many, many years ago, I think it was 2002, I can’t remember the exact time, a very nice lady and her young son Dylan started volunteering at HPAF. They were enthusiastic and hard workers, always ready to take on a new project. They groomed horses, and Hawk was their favorite. They would always spend extra time grooming and fussing over Hawk when they were at the farm. They took on large projects as well; building a beautiful area with brick pavers at the garage so that we had another area where the horses could stand for grooming and bathing. Barbara always had a smile on her face and Dyland was a quiet, polite young man who was obviously raised right! For 2 to 3 years, the dynamic duo came out to the farm regularly to help with the horses and the farm. Then the family got heavily involved in scouting, and we did not see them often. Fast forward to 2011 when Dylan calls and tells us that he would like to do his Eagle Scout project for HPAF. After lots of planning and working out details, construction on a new round pen began in March. Dylan got all the materials donated from local companies and the auger work (post hole drilling) was donated by Rich Hedman, who has done all of HPAF’s construction and additions over the years. In three weekends, the old round pen was taken down, and a new, larger and taller round pen was built. The pen is beautiful and more importantly, exactly what was needed for training and riding the young horses. Our most sincere thanks to Dylan, his family, and his fellow Eagle Scouts from Troop 439 who all worked so hard on this big project to help the horses. Dylan has grown into a polite, hard working young man that would make any parents proud. HPAF lost a long time friend in August with the passing of Tommy Heard, a well respected horseman and Thoroughbred trainer. Mr. Heard and the James J. Colt Foundation were one of the early supporters of HPAF when we were just getting started in 1990. Riding in Horse Country as a kid, the main landmark was Heardsdale, the 100 acre Thoroughbred training farm that was on the southeast side of Sunset Drive and 117th Avenue. Trail rides always included riding along side the farm that bordered woods and the Dade County paupers field. Boarding my horse at Red Sunset Farm on Sunset and 123rd Avenue, I also rode in Heardsdale’s field which abutted Red Sunset. It was another 100 acres of wide open space to ride in. After Heardsdale was closed, it was the site of the fall Arabian circuit shows where I first showed Arabians in the early 70’s. When I later had the opportunity to meet Mr. Heard, I found out what a kind and generous person he was. Mr. Heard was the first Honorary Board Member of HPAF, and remained so until his death. Mr. Heard was a respected and highly regarded gentleman who will be greatly missed. ~Before & Afters~ Lacy 7-13-11 Tara 7-13-11 Pia 5-16-2011 Tara 10-14-11 Pia 9-7-2011 Lacy 9-16-11 Angel 5-12-2011 Legacy 5-18-11 Shiloh 7-28-11 Angel 7-12-2011 Legacy 8-22-11 Shiloh 10-21-11 253 pound gain FREE WITH DONATION!
