Woodworkers Guild
President Letter August 2015
I’ve noticed that in the summer, my projects take a little more time to get done. Most
of the things that distract me in the summer from getting shop time are family related
and I don’t regret them at all. However, every year I secretly look forward to the end of
314.962.1907
summer and the start of fall because I know I’ll be able to devote a little more time to the

avocation of woodworking. So, I’m really happy with all of the activities that are planned

He is also a really talented videographer and has produced quite a few really great videos
on different aspects of Fine Woodworking. Recently, he was featured in St. Louis Magazine’s

He has honed his woodworking skills by training with:

Matt Wolf – Fine Furniture

Curtis Buchanan – Chair making

His favorite Regional influences are: Newport, RI, Charleston, SC and Philadelphia, PA.
One of the ways to help identify the region where a piece of furniture was produced
is by examining the secondary woods, such as drawer boxes. Generally, the secondary
woods were chosen because they were plentiful in that area.
Dr. Adkins buys most of his lumber from Irion Lumber. You can visit Irion’s website at
www.irionlumber.com
Irion specializes in wide lumber and matched boards from the same log. They carry a
large inventory in different widths & thicknesses of just a few species, mainly Cherry,
Tiger Maple, Walnut, Butternut and Mahogany. Lou Irion started a furniture shop in 1977.
He started sawing his own lumber in order to get the quality he needed. In 1995 he sold
the furniture shop to focus on the lumber business.
Dr. Adkins’ presentation included numerous slides of his many beautiful projects,
including: Chest of Drawers, Trestle Table, Triple Chest & Highboy, Oxbow Chest, Chest
w/burled Walnut, corner cabinet, Philadelphia Cartush (Carving Project), Secretary (Bookmatched), Trunk Shaped Breadbox, Highboy – tiger maple, Tea Table, Double Borough,
Desk – tiger maple, George Washington Desk, Hall table – Butternut, Bed, Canopy Bed,
Acorn Bed, Tall Post Bed, Stool & Benches, Windsor Chair (Barstools), Windsor Chair,
Stool/Bench, Windsor Settee, Grandfather Clock, Roubo Workbench (2), Turned Post Bed,
Kitchen Cabinets, Post Bed – Mahogany with Satinwood inlays, William & Mary Coffee
Table, Entertainment Center, Round Table.
Dr. Adkins finished up by telling us about a couple of his woodworking aspirations: to
explore carving & turning and Shellac.
