The Chamber Scene HUNTINGTON COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 305 Warren Street • Huntington, Indiana 46750 • (260) 356-5300 • www.huntington-chamber.com • December 2010 The Desk and Copy Stop celebrates 30 years The Desk and Copy Stop celebrated its 30th year in business in Huntington in October. Dave and Ann Wasmuth opened their original business as The Desk in downtown Huntington at 315 N. Jefferson Street on October 1, 1980 and remained at that location for 17 years. After operating in two other locations, The Desk and Copy Stop began business in its current downtown location, 434 N. Jefferson Street, in 2009. Dave and Ann purchased their current building this past October on their anniversary. The business has continually supplied Huntington and the surrounding communities with office supplies and equipment since its beginning. The Desk was one of the first 50 sales agents in the country to handle Xerox copiers when they became available in 1984. Dave explained that Xerox suppliers blossomed to over 600 nationwide and The Desk remained in the top 10 percent of those businesses for its sales of the copiers for five years. They now sell and service their own line of copiers and Dave has installed over 2,000 copiers since he began selling them. The couple is happy to be back downtown and “loves” the downtown atmosphere. Dave says he is a hopeless romantic about returning Huntington to what it was. They are also grateful for their long lasting customers who have followed them to the various locations. They see the importance of supporting local businesses and believe the downtown has a very positive atmosphere – they see positive things happening. Dave started in the office supply business with his father in downtown Columbia City. Dave continued alongside his father at the Columbia City location selling to customers in Huntington until he decided to open the Huntington retail store. The Desk is a full line office dealer with over 40,000 items available to its customers. Along with paper, pens, toner cartridges, notebooks, and every office supply imaginable, the business also offers a full line of over 50,000 pieces of office furniture. The couple explained that if they do not have an item in stock, they can have it for a customer by the next day and some- Dave and Ann Wasmuth, owers of The Desk and Copy Stop celebrated 30 years in business in October. It offers copies, business cards, letterheads, hand books, manuals, and more to its many customers. “The Desk and Copy Stop can compete with the big box stores,” explained Dave and Ann when asked about the pricing. Their favorite thing is taking care of the customers. “I love my customers,” Ann stated, “We want to offer them the best value and pricing available and make them feel special about doing business with us.” The couple recently completed a large furniture project for the new Pathfinder location in the former Northstar building. It took them around one month of ordering, delivering, and installing to get the new location ready for Pathfinder to move in. Dave enjoys meeting the customer’s needs and completing installations such as the Pathfinder building. Possible future plans for The Desk and Copy Stop include remodeling the backroom and putting in an office furniture showcase. The couple believes the downtown will see more retail shops locate there and hopes to see this happen. The Wasmuths both believe the downtown feels much more positive since they have come back. They feel they are part of the community again and want to be a part of the positive things that are taking place downtown.
