Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: I’m a snowboarder. Can I patrol at Cataloochee?
A: Yes. Snowboarding is an integral part of the
Snow Sports Industry and is welcomed on the
Cataloochee Ski Patrol.
Q: Do I need to be an expert skier/rider to be a
Cataloochee Patroller?
A: You do not have to be an “expert”, but you
should be comfortable on your skis/board.
Q: Do I need prior medical or emergency medical
care experience?
A: No. The patrol training program begins with the
NSP Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) training
course taught over the course of the summer, fall,
and early winter. The course is taught throughout
the country. Locally, classes are taught in
Atlanta, Georgia, and at the Cataloochee Ski
Area.
Q: Are there any other pre-season requirements
besides OEC?
A: Yes. You will also have to complete the
advanced level CPR/AED course.
Volunteer: 15 years old / Paid: 18 years old
Q: As a patrol candidate, what can I expect when I
have completed the OEC Course?
A: As a patrol Candidate (OEC Technician), your
primary focus will be on-the-hill training. Each
day you patrol, you will either work one-on-one
with a mentor (when numbers permit) or will
been overseen by a mentor as can be arranged
during that work shift. Training will be held on
Sundays. You are expected to attend at least one
training session per week, but the more time you
can spend training the faster you will progress. A
typical candidate who passes the rider evaluation
in their first season has logged 150+ hours of
time on the hill during that season.
