Plan your
Gettysburg Getaway
Millions visit Gettysburg annually. They traverse the
historic battlefield and town and learn about those
three fateful July days and that moment of hope and
healing sparked by President Lincoln on November 19,
1863. Those same visitors discover what you are about
to learn, that Gettysburg and Adams County offers
much more than historic stories. Be sure to plan at
least four days in Gettysburg to understand the stories
of 1863, to discover the treasures in our boutiques,
to taste your way across our bountiful orchards and
vineyards, and just relax and have fun.
You will find a few ideas to get you started in this
guide, as well as resources to book your trip. If
you need more help, just drop us a note at info@

A 3 Day
Battle,
A 2 Minute
Speech, &
1 Amazing
Destination...
Gettysburg is known around the globe for three
fateful days in July, 1863, and one two-minute
speech on November 19, 1863. Millions visit
annually to tour the National Park, walk the
Soldiers’ National Cemetery and reflect on what
this time in history means today.
For first time visitors, there are many ways to
experience the National Park. Tours are available
by bus, bicycle, Segway, horseback, carriage
and scooter. You can also take your time on a
self-guided tour. The National Park, a 6,000acre military park, surrounds the small town of
Gettysburg. While the town is not part of the
Call 717-334-6274 or toll free at 800-337-5015 for more information
National Park, it is part of the battlefield, as
the fighting raged through the town, with
sharpshooters stationed in many attics. During
and after the fighting, homes and churches
became hospitals, as the people of Gettysburg
tried to understand what had happened and
what their lives had become. From that day on,
things would not be the same.
To truly understand the impact of this battle,
you must take in the stories of those who lived
here. Town tours, both guided and self-guided,
offer a look into the citizens of Gettysburg and
the soldiers who were treated here. Museums
offer a look into both the military aspects and
the civilian, the power of medicine in the Civil
War and the power of faith.
And while Gettysburg did not usher in the end
of the American Civil War, President Lincoln’s
speech, delivered just four months later, did offer
a sense of hope and a desire for our country to
heal. It also called for all “to be dedicated here
to the unfinished work which they who fought
here have thus far so nobly advanced.” We invite
you to reflect on this… and on what Gettysburg
means to you.

Family Fun
While Gettysburg is known for Civil War
history, there is more to this vacation
destination than a battlefield or a Presidential
Address. Family fun can be found around
every corner…
Plan to take in one of the many events and
activities we host each year. From living history
encampments, to concerts, an Irish Festival,
to parades and holiday activities – there is
something going on almost every weekend.
Plan a camping trip and discover the fun of
cooking over an open fire, sharing your own
ghost stories, or taking part in one of the
many activities our campgrounds offer
each weekend.
Even your history can be fun with special tours
of the battlefield. Consider a horseback tour,
bike tour, or kid-friendly tour. Be sure you take
in the town’s story so the kids understand what
their lives would have been like… it may help
them appreciate how great we have it today!
During the day, discover our countryside –
orchards, horse farms, seasonal corn mazes
and hiking trails. Check out hands-on
museums that put fun back into learning.
When the sun goes down, let one of our
many seasoned guides take you on a
haunted adventure.

Map of
Adams County
While Adams County is
best known as the home of
Gettysburg and Apple Country,
did you know you can follow
the famous Lincoln Highway
through Adams County? Take
the drive along our country’s
first transcontinental highway
and discover the interesting
sites along the way.
On the famous highway, you will
find historic sites such as General
Lee’s Headquarters and the
Cashtown Inn where Lt. Gen. AP
Hill stopped prior to battle.
Travelers will also uncover
treasures in our many shops and
markets as you follow the famous
Lincoln Highway signs to New
Oxford and Abbottstown. Be sure
to check out the artwork, like
classic gas pumps, along the way.
