Machia, ('54), president of Essner Metal Works, Inc., Fort Worth, Texas, was presented the President's Award at the school's May commencement exercises. The award was presented in recognition of his outstanding business career and his close service association with AGSIM. With a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Rice University, Machia attended AGSIM and after graduating in 1954, he joined Dow Chemical Co. He later became associated with a Houston-based oil tool company and did field engineering and sales work throughout the oil fields of Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas. In 1957 he started a business as a manufacturers' agent, representing firms specializing in contract manufacturing for industry. In 1959, he acquired the assets of Essner Metal Works and formed the present corporation, of which 2 he is preSident and majority stockholder. In addition, he continues his agency business, concentrating in the area of plastic extrusion for highly speCialized industrial and geophysical exploration applications. Essner Metal Works specializes in the manufacture of preCision stampings, sheet metal fabrications, and assemblies for other manufacturers. Machia has long been an active supporter of AGSIM and is a member of the Presidents Council. Dr. William Voris, left, congratulates Tom Machia on receiving AGSIM's President's Award during the May graduation ceremonies. THUNDERBIRD FALL 1982 Gulf Oil Chairman Featured Speaker at August Commencement The sixth summer indoor commencement was held on August 13 at the Mountain Shadows Resort in Scottsdale. The 152 graduates, family, friends and school personnel heard James E. Lee, chairman of the board, Gulf Oil Corporation, call for understanding of the position and often the plight of multinational corpora tions. He said that multinationals should not be regarded as "rogue elephants riding roughshod over national laws and popular aspirations alike, in the single minded pursuit of profits," but rather should be viewed as organizations that are "attempting Simultaneously to meet the different, and sometimes conflicting, goals of a variety of constituents. " The Barton Kyle Yount Award went to Thomas Wayne Short, a Goodyear Executive Addresses May Graduates A Thunderbird Family Lynette Botsford (May '82) poses with her father, Edward A. Botsford, from the class of 1957. Botsford received his Silver Anniversary Certificate early, as he won't be able to attend the Reunion in December . THUNDERBIRD FALL 1982 Ib Thomsen, president, Goodyear International Corporation, executive vice president and a director of The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, parent company of Goodyear International, delivered the school's 82nd commence men t address on May 21. In his speech, Thomsen called for graduates to continue to gain knowledge of the international economic and political problems of the world. He cited the world situation of today, " ... a world preoccupied on the one hand with the east-west dialogue, which is concerned with who rules the world in geopolitical terms, as well as with the north-south dialogue, which concerns itself with who owns the world in economic terms." He then discussed his perceptions of the socio-economic realities of different parts of the world-Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Basin and Europe. He stated that the free enterprise system has produced unprecedented wealth in past generations, but "that the need to balance economic growth with social justice has meant that the free enterprise graduate of Dartmouth College from Portland, Oregon. Top teacher awards went to Dr. Robert Moran, International Studies; Bahia Gulick of the Arabic section and Lilith Schutte of the German section tied for the Modern Language honors; and Dr. Carl Frear took the World Business Department award. The ceremonies were followed by dinner and a dance. system has become less of a driving force in economic development both in the industrialized and developing world." He added that he would "rather talk in terms of predominantly market-oriented economies than completely free enterprise systems . The political compromise processes in all the democracies of the world will undoubtedly be geared to a greater degree of accommodation with divergent socio-economic views, which process of accommodation will increasingly playa role in the developmental processes of the less developed countries." He told the graduates that "it will fall on your shoulders to playa role in assuring that social justice can co-exist with the individual pursuit of excellence." Three hundred and sixty-three students received their MIM degrees at the Central Quad. Top teacher awards went to Richard Mahoney, International Studies Department; Dr. Taeho Kim, World Business Department, and to Dr. Jorge Valdivieso, Spanish section, Modern Language Department. Barbara Bunten of Des Moines, Iowa, and a graduate of Washburn University, took the Barton Kyle Yount Award. 3 The Average "On the average, a man with one foot on a hot stove and one foot on a block of ice can be considered comfortable ." With this analogy in mind, consider a recent random sample survey of AGSIM alumni that gave the following profile of the "average" Thunderbird. He is between 40 and 45 years old, from the class of 1969, with an M.LM. degree emphasizing marketing. Our average alumnus lives in the northeastern United States with his wife and two children. He is in an upper management position, and the annual income is between $35,000 and $45,000. Perhaps more accurate are profiles for each five-year class 1962-66 grouping. 1947-51 Male, age 60 years, married, supporting 2.5 people on a household income of $45,-50,000, he is in an upper management level position in the marketing/sales field. He holds a B.F. T. degree from A.LF.T. 1967-71 1952-56 Male, 55 years old, he is married, with four in his family, and a household income between $45-50,000. This alumnus holds a B.F.T. degree and works in an accounting related field in an upper management .---. level position. ~ 1957-61 Male, 50 years old, this grad is married, 1:Ji. with a family size of 4.4 people, and a household income between $45-50,000. He is Thunderbird 4 by Liz Konold '79 in an upper management position in a marketing related field. Male, age 45 years, this alumnus has a 14 percent chance of having an advanced degree in addition to the B.F.T. degree, and is just as likely to be in marketing as in finance. He supports a family of four people, with a household income of $40-50,000. Male, 40 years old, married, this alumnus is the first to receive the M.I.M. degree, with an emphasis on marketing. About onethird of his classmates have master's degrees in other fields. His family'S income is between $50-60,000, and the size of the family is 2.3 people. He has the highest position of any other profile, ranging from high upper-management to executive level. 1972-76 Male, age 35 years, this alumnus has a fifty-fifty chance of being married, with a family of 3 people. He received the M.I.M. degree and has a 10 percen t chance of having an advanced degree in another field. His class had a split between marketing and finance majors, and he holds a mid-to-uppermanagement position, with a household income of $4550,000. 1977-81 Male, age 30 years, this alumnus is most likely to be single, and 25 percent of his classmates hold another advanced degree besides the M.LM. He majored in marketing and is in an entry-level to midmanagement position, supporting 1.7 people on a household income between $20-30,000. Of the questionnaire respondees, 93 percent are U.S. citizens, and almost 20 percent live overseas. One-third reported incomes of $50,000 or more. Fifty-two percent majored in marketing, 21 percent in finance/banking. Forty-four percent of these graduates received some sort of financial aid when attending AGSIM. Because of the "averaging," female graduates of AGSIM got lost in the shuffle of figures. It is only fair to point out that within the past ten years, over 20 percent of AGSIM graduates have been women, and many of the class THUNDERBIRD FALL 1982 group statistics regarding position, family size, and household income would apply equally to them. When asked about their attitudes toward the American Graduate School, 94 percent reported "some" or "strong" feelings, and 75 percent felt the School's reputation had improved since graduation. Only 10 percent felt the reputation has diminished; more recent graduates tended to be more critical. When asked if they had contributed to the School, 42 percent responded "yes," with 60 percent of those saying they give on an annual basis. Thus, about onefourth of the respondees consider themselves annual contributors to AGSIM, although partiCipation from all alumni in 1980-81 was about 16 percent. This may be explained by the innate bias in such a survey, in that those responding generally have positive attitudes toward and want to help the School. Seventy-seven percent stated they plan to give in the future. Only one class group (1957-61) indicated that future gifts would be the same or smaller. A grad echoed his classmates' sentiments by stating, "Your questionnaire does not cover an important situation I facewhich I'm sure is faced by many in my age group. 1.) I currently have a child attending an eastern university. Tuition, room and board (equal) $10,500 a year, after-tax dollars. 2.) Lyon, chairman of AGSIM's Board of Trustees and president of Valley National Bank, has been named chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Valley National Corporation and its principal subsidiary, the Valley National Bank of Arizona. The appointment is effective November 1, 1982. He replaces Gilbert F. Bradley, who will remain on the organization's board of directors. 7 NEWS CON'T Founding Trustee O'Malley Dies Edward V. O'Malley, Sr., chairman emeritus of the board of The O'Malley Companies, Inc. and one of the founding trustees of American Graduate School of International Management, died on May 24, 1982. He was 77. Long active in the Phoenix community, O'Malley was also on the board of directors of First National Bank of Arizona (First Interstate Bank), Phelps Dodge Corporation, Arizona Public Service Company and St. Joseph's Hospital, among others. After completing his education at Harvard University in 1928, O'Malley joined the family business, O'Malley Lumber Co., started by his uncle and his father in 1908. He became general manager in 1938, president in 1948, chairman of the board in 1967 and chairman emeritus in 1976. Visiting Professor Disappears in Mexico Dr. Nicholas W. Schrock, visiting professor from the University of Colorado, has been missing in Mexico since May 30, 1982. He had returned in mid-May from Japan and the People's Republic of China, where he had been in conjunction with AGSIM's exchange programs at the Institute for International Studies and Training and the Beijing Institute for Foreign Trade. On his way to a teaching post for the summer semester at the Autonomous University in Guadalajara, Mexico, Schrock was reported as overdue on June 4. The Oficina de Poblacion de Nogales, Sonora, confirms that he crossed the border into Mexico on May 30 with permission to remain in the country for 180 days. He has not been heard from since. Rumor, speculation, and conjecture have been the order of the day in response to the twisted maze of events since his mysterious disappearance. Charges of corruption, ineptitude, and even murder have been levied against the civic officials of San Ignacio, Sinaloa, a small town near Mazatlan, where Dr. Schrock's truck was found. Reports indicate the town officials found the truck on June 6 or 7 but failed to report its discovery until August 2. During this time period a young man confessed to the murder of Dr. Schrock, promising to produce the body for officials. When officials and Mrs. Schrock arrived to view the body, there was none, and the young man subsequently retracted his confession. What had appeared to be the resolution of the case had itself given rise to more questions, such as why the young man had confessed in the first place. The discovery of the truck in San Ignacio gave rise to further theories as an investigation led to the charges of conspiracy, cover-up, and homicide being levied against the mayor, the chief of police, and four deputies in San Ignacio. It was reported that Dr. Schrock's truck had been used from the time of its discovery until the August 2 report of the discovery for campaigning purposes for the Mexican presidential election. Another confession emerged and a body was exhumed from the local cemetery. The body was identified by local Mexican authorities to be that of Professor Schrock. The body was sent to Boulder, Colorado for internment, but upon arrival it was determined that the body was not that of Schrock but that of an aged Mexican man. The mayor of San Ignacio, denied any involvement in Schrock's disappearance. He further said that "the disappearance was strange" and he hoped "nothing bad has happened to Professor Schrock." Again, apparent resolution led investigators back to the starting point. With the discovery of the misidentification, the case has been reopened. Ambassador John Gavin, U.S. envoy to Mexico, has lent the full support of his staff to the investigation. Ruth Schrock, when asked about the possibility of finding the truth concerning her husband's disappearance replied, "I am not hopeful." There are still many theories regarding Dr. Schrock's disappearance. It is quite possible that they may remain just tha t-theories. Presently, seven people have been charged and are on trial in Culiacan, Sinaloa. The San Ignacio police chief has been charged with homicide, two policemen as accomplices to homicide and four others as accessories in helping cover up the crime. At press time, no word regarding the trial or any information regarding Professor Schrock has been forthcoming from either U.S. or Mexican officials. S. THUNDERBIRD FALL 1982 Trans-Europa Chapter Being Considered Carl Eidsness and Lo Locher organized a meeting in Mainz, West Germany, on the weekend of October 9 and 10 to further explore the idea of a formal founding of a Trans-Europa Thunderbird chapter. A tentative agenda for the weekend included: • a business meeting to determine if and how to organize the chapter • a tour of the c.A. Kupferberg sparkling wine cellars • a "Sekt" tasting • a tour on a Rhine steamer along the river's most picturesque stretch • a walk through Mainz's "Alstadt" with visits to its many wine pubs Carl can be reached c/o A. A lei greeting, pupus, tropical drinks, and live Hawaiian music and hula dancers highlighted the recent gathering of Hawaii alumni in honor of Dr. and Mrs. William Voris. Thirty alumni and guests were on hand to renew old acquaintances and make new friends at the first major gettogether in Hawaii in almost two years. The event, held at the Honolulu Club, was organized by June Pearson Sweetser ('77), Dennis Oshiro ('72), and Fred Smoot ('66) . During the evening, T-Birds were treated to a showing of the new slide presentation on Thunderbird and were given an update of the school's recent accomplishments by Dr. Voris. As the revellers partied into late evening, they vowed to continue the fun by getting together on a more regular basis. 11 COllling N ovelllber 6 and 7 Cornucopia of Color A cornucopia of color is coming to AGSIM on November 6 and 7. The Eighth Annual Thunderbird Invitational Balloon Race will likely have 100 balloons colOring the morning air on the school's "back forty" during the festive weekend. Once again, student booths will feature foods from around the world with most of the operations being sponsored by campus clubs. However, entrepreneurship shines through and many a student loan payment has been assisted by profits derived from hard work and good vittles prepared by "Thunderbirds in residence." The Friends of Thunderbird in conjunction with the Glendale Chamber of Commerce began planning and organizing the Eighth Annual Race soon after last November's event, which netted over $30,000 for the school's scholarship fund. Sponsorships for the race are going for $325 and for that fee the sponsor receives two tickets to the highly praised Hot Air Affair (international dinner, silent auction and calcutta) held the Friday evening before the first race day. In addition, sponsors are treated to a brunch, held two weeks prior to the race, and a half-page ad in the Balloon Race program is included-and it's all tax deductible. This year the students have organized a two-mile fun run on Sunday, November 7 at 10 a.m. for all the running enthusiasts who will be attending. They would be happy to have some alums join their ranks. We hope T-Birds will come to consider the Balloon Race as AGSIM's "homecoming" event and plan a visit to campus. The Alumni Office will be open with coffee and doughnuts available both Saturday and Sunday mornings, with stronger refreshment available on Saturday afternoon. Nearly 75 alums visited the office during the 1981 race, and we hope to see more of you this year! '57 Class Silver Reunion Set for Decelllber 16-17 Plans for the Silver Anniversary Reunion for the class of 1957 are underway and we're hoping for a large crowd . The schedule of events includes an informal reception on Thursday evening, December 16, in the Goldwater Lounge. Faculty and staff will join you, old acquaintances can be renewed and past good times remembered, and you can catch up on news about the growth and development of AGSIM. On Friday, December 17, after a 12 morning gathering in the alumni office, tours of campus are available for those interested. Then there is the pre-commencement luncheon with the board of trustees at the President's residence . Also attending the luncheon will be the commencement speaker, Dr. Thomas Horton, president and chief execu tive officer of American Management Associations. At the commencement exercises, held in the late afternoon in the Central Quad (just like 1957), each alum will be presented their Silver Anniversary Graduation Certificate. Of course, following graduation there is the party, organized by the graduating class, at a local resort. Everyone is encouraged to attend and information regarding tickets will be available when you arrive on campus. Personal preference remains the determining factor with regard to attendance . The '56 Reunion drew 12 attendees and we're hopeful that the class of 1957 can double that figure. Please phone Cathy Benoit, (602) 978-7135, for more information and assistance with local accommodations and reservations. MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW - and plan to attend YOUR 25th Silver Reunion. THUNDERBIRD FALL 1982 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS 1981-82 Alumni giving reached a record high of $119,137 in 1981-82, an increase of 29 percent. Alumni also generated an additional $38,824 of $47,135 in corpora te matching gifts, for a total of $157,961 given to the School. Kenneth A. Jacuzzi, International Thunderbird Fund Chairman for 1981 -82, matched new and increased dollars with a generous challenge grant. The average gift increased from $50 in 1980-81 to $65 in 198182. The number of donors remained at the same level as the previous year. Only fifty-five percent of donors in 1980-81 responded with a gift in 1981-82. Yet over 800 first-time donors did respond. Those alumni giving in consecutive years will become members of the Encore Club, deSignated in the Honor Roll by the symbol lie." 1981-82 Contributions By Source Corporations _'--__ $498,418 (matching gifts) Patron $25,000 and Up Mr. Clay Bedford Executive Club $5,000 - $24,999 e Mrs. F.N. Russell Dworkin Slowly, but surely, the campus of AGSIM has undergone many transformations in the past 35 years. The renovation of old buildings and the construction of new ones has served to partly diminish the military camp atmosphere and bring forth an appearance more commonly associated with an academic institution. Indeed, former denizons of campus dormitories must bear fond memories as the recent renovation of 0 building brought the last barracks-style dorm into the modern era with new fixtures, carpeting, and most belovedly-air conditioning. A new classroom building gave students a more academic setting and teachers a more professional arena for teaching. The old classrooms received fresh paint and new doors. The career center was enlarged to make room for more in terview space and other recruiting facilities. Only one development was absent-a centralized, multi-functional gathering place. This summer, the old familiar hangar which housed the Thunderbird "jets" in the' 40s, and the Pub subsequently, has been undergoing renovation to fill that need. By November, AGSIM will have a new activities center, spacious enough to accommodate between 1,200 and 1,500 people, replete with bar, kitchen facilities, and wired for sound. It will serve the AGSIM community for such purposes as meetings, seminars, dinners, movies, and parties. According to Lee Stickland, vice president for business affairs, its doors will be open for the first time to service the 8th Annual Hot Air Affair on November 5. The idea for the center first came up two years ago at the Balloon Race of 1980, when Dr. Voris remarked publicly that that type of facility was needed. The idea germinated until this summer when recent operating surpluses generated the funds for the project, which will cost approximately $300,000. Stickland outlined some of the features of the renovation such as a drop-down divider to partition the space for smaller gatherings, an evaporative cooling system which has the flexibility to later be converted to centralized cooling and heating at low cost, auditorium style front doors, and modern restroom facilities . He also discussed some of the cost-saving features of the auditorium such as the leveling of the floor to reduce clean up costs, no permanent seating fixtures to reduce set-up costs, storage space for chairs which will save on chair rental costs, and the fact that the kitchen facilities will save steps for the caterers, which will be the dining hall in most cases. Stickland also added that because the new center can accommodate more people than any other building in Glendale, the center possibly will generate revenue from rental. I can hear the question, "What about the Pub?" The Pub will remain in its present location but it, too, will be renovated. The renovation is scheduled for the latter part of 1982, so as not to conflict with current use, and will be funded completely by revenue generated from operations. It is a little known fact but the Pub has been self-sustaining since its first period of operation when it was given $1,200 by the ASLC in 1971. The $75,000 renovation will double the size of the facility, replace the ceiling, modernize the locker-style restrooms, and improve the interior decor. It will still serve the finest selection of imported beer in the desert. The face of AGSIM it is a changin'! Those of you who have been a few years away from the school will be surprised on your next visit out, which we welcome heartily. Come on by, have a drink in the new Pub, see the transformations and feel the pulse of the school. Though the face has changed, AGSIM still does what it always did best-train students to be international business people. The new structures merely enhance the effort. He joined Sell Overseas America as regional director and is now based in New York. His job involves all aspects of the association's services including overseeing a research staff, providing trade leads, an omsbudsman service, a referral system for special areas of expertise and the association's publications including a newspaper, magazine and annual membership directory. Cliff says he is happy to be involved in the association's effort in encouraging and facilitating export trade. He adds, "I am in constant communication with 20-30 exporters on a daily basis, as well as meeting vice presidents and directors of the largest U.S. banks, Chambers of Commerce, state, federal and international commerce departments, etc. Truly, the cause and principles of our association are one and the same as those of AGSIM." Cliff welcomes hearing from students and alumni and can be reached at the SOS America office in New York. 24 Grad Heads Western Foreign Trade Program Cindy Ogburn had been a portrait photographer and a newspaper editor before she attended AGSIM in 1973. After graduation from AGSIM she joined the business development department of Bechtel Corporation's Pipeline and Production Services Division in San Francisco where she performed financial analyses and market studies. Moving to Houston as public relations and advertising manager for King-Wilkinson, Inc., she established a worldwide advertising program for the firms. In 1976, Cindy began working as an independent consultant in Houston and Denver. In 1978 she was appointed deputy director of the Old West Regional Commission's Frankfurt, Germany office. There she assisted the states of Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska in foreign trade, reverse investment and tourism opportunities. Following her contract period in Germany, she returned to Wyoming as Economic Planner for the Department of Economic Planning and Development for the state. She spearheaded the state's investigation of coal exporting to the Pacific Rim. Later she was appointed by Wyoming Governor Ed Herschler to chair the organizational committee of the Rocky Mountain Foreign Trade Conference in conjunction with Montana, North Dakota, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. The conference was held in late spring, 1982, at the Scottsdale Conference Resort. Cindy was able to visit campus on several occasions during the organization of the Foreign Trade Conference and share with us some of the details of her exciting career. The conference involved more Thunderbirds than Cindy, however. Sales manager of the Scottsdale Conference Resort is Rich McNeill ('76), Dirk Moonen ('77) is with the Arizona Department of Economic Planning and Development, Ernest L. Kangas ('73) served on the export financing and insurance panel and Ogburn '73 Samuelson '80 Dan Sprague ('66) is executive director of Western Governors' Conference in San Francisco. Charles B. Malone ('71) is manager of international marketing for Flying Tigers in Los Angeles and Carlos Martinez ('78) is foreign trade specialist for the State of New Mexico. In addition, AGSIM world business department Chairman Clifton Cox served on a panel at the conference. Cindy worked diligently on the RMFTC and word of her success reached AGSIM by reports from many alums in the West who attended the conference. Another example of a job well done by a T-Bird. Congratulations, Cindy! Word has just been received that Cindy has been named director of the Western Governors' Conference Foreign Trade Program (includes 14 western states and three Pacific territories). She will also be leading a six-state trade mission to Alberta, Canada this fall, and has been named Governor Herschler's alternate to the Board of Directors and Executive Committee for the Council of Export Trading Companies, Inc., a Washington, D.C. based firm.
