This merger was completed in February and resulted in a more effective organization. Ferguson felt there was an opportunity to improve their cost structure and leverage the talents and recourses of their associates. Additionally, with customers ranging farther and farther to find work, this new footprint allows consistency across a much broader geography. Lou Tocci, General Manager of the newly merged locations, recently stated to the Plumbing News that “The merger has been a very positive one for our customers and associates, and I believe it also allows us to bring some organization to the vendor equation whether we’re talking about PVF, plumbing, lighting or appliances. We’ve been able to redeploy HR resources to maximize our potential, put people in the right roles to service our customers and ultimately grow our market share. It’s provided an opportunity to generate internal promotions and position people to their advantage in an otherwise challenging economy.” Ferguson is very optimistic about the potential of this merger and hopes their customers and associates will continue to see the benefits of sharing resources in South Carolina.6 PLUMBING • IRRIGATION • KITCHEN & BATH •UNDERGROUND • ASPE Page 2 Carolina Plumbing News - September, 2010 Carolina Plumbing News - September, 2010 Page 3 Rheem Integrated HVAC & Water Heating System Powered by Tankless Technology First of its Kind from a Single Manufacturer Rheem recently introduced its new Integrated HVAC & Water Heating System Powered by Tankless Technology, a product that offers home heating and hot water from a single source. When a Rheem tankless water heater is matched with a Rheem hydronic air handler, hot water is circulated through the hydronic air handler to provide warmth and is then re-circulated back to the tankless water heater to ensure that no water is wasted. Chapter President’s Message by John Neal Greetings to all: Where has the summer gone? It’s hard to believe that school has already started back. It seems like just the other week school was getting out for the summer. Ah, time sure does fly by when you are having fun. I would like to encourage each one out there to try real hard to make a commitment to support our chapter this year. I realize that many of you are either unemployed or on reduced hours, but now more than ever, we need help. Our latest roster shows that we are now done to 28 members from 36 a year ago. There is a form you can fill out to request a waiver of dues, and that may help some of you to get by the rough times. You will find the form elsewhere in this newsletter. Nick Cantu has taken on the responsibilities of VPT, and is doing a great job. Elsewhere in this newsletter you will find a list of technical topics for this coming year. I have enclosed some articles pertaining to the plumbing industry for your information and use. Note the second article, and how some countries treat illegal aliens. Lastly, if any one is considering a trip to Philadelphia to the ASPE convention, I will have some brochures at the meeting for your information. Please make an effort to come out on Tuesday September 5th for our first meeting. INDUSTRY NEWS Access to Clean Water and Sanitation Is a Human Right, UN Declares By a vote of 122 in favor and none against, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution introduced by Bolivia that calls on countries and international organizations to provide financial resources, build capacity, and transfer technology, particularly to developing countries, to help provide safe, clean, accessible, and affordable drinking water and sanitation for all people. The United States delegation abstained from voting due to concerns that the text could undermine the current work of the Human Rights Council because it described the right to water and sanitation in a way not reflected in existing international law. Click here to read more about the resolution, including the opinions of countries that spoke during the meeting. Even Big Cities Face Water and Sanitation Problems In Jakarta, the capital and largest city of Indonesia, less than 50 percent of the city’s 9 million citizens have water on tap, and only 3 percent of the city’s homes have proper sewage systems, according to an article in Eco-Business.com. Most citizens must utilize community wells for water, and often in poor neighborhoods a “water mafia” controls the communal tank and charges residents two to three times the normal cost to draw water from it. Unfortunately, the government is not allowing piped water systems to many neighborhoods because residents are living on the land illegally.6 ASPE Technical Report by Nick Cantu VP Technical Please allow me to introduce myself as the new VP Technical for this year. As such, it is my responsibility to plan, organize and direct all the technical activities and events of the chapter. Simply put, it means that I’m responsible to provide the speakers for our lunchtime meetings. I guess you could say that’s one of the perks of being VP Technical. If you’re like me, you prefer to hear presentations on topics that are relevant to the type of projects that you typically work on. This means that it may not be relevant to someone else who works on different types of projects. As you know, someone who works primarily on industrial projects may not have the same in- Carolina Plumbing News - September, 2010 formation needs as someone else who works primarily on commercial or residential type projects. This brings me to the point I want to make. This is your chapter and your opportunity to have input into the type of information you receives. As we enter into this new chapter season, and you listen to the various topics presented, be thinking about what you may like to hear as a presentation topic for the 2011-2012 chapter season and let me know. That way we can have a diversity of topics which would include topics relevant to the type of projects you typically work on. With that said, I’m happy to be able to say that going into this chapter year, we already have a full line up of speakers for the coming season. Starting on September 7 with Greg Wilson with A.O. Smith, he will be speaking to us about Air to Water/Water to Water heat pump water heaters. This concept is fairly new and has been gaining in popular- ity lately with all the push for higher efficiency. I’m looking forward to hearing about where this application could best be put to use as well as what are some of the pros and cons of this technology. I for one am curious to know if this would be a good application for residential use or if it should it be limited to small commercial applications. It never hurts to be able to impress a client by offering them an option of the latest technology if their building would benefit by it. I invite all of you to come to the meeting to hear what Greg has to say and possibly learn about something you might be able to specify, or at least offer, on a future project. As an added incentive for you to attend our meetings, I have made an effort to inform our speakers that we want to be able to claim CEU’s/PDH’s for these sessions. What that means is that the speaking session must be 50 minutes minimum (one contact hour is defined as 50 minutes of instruction) and not be of a proprietary nature. The units fall under the category “Additional Education and Professional Development Programs”. These are defined as efforts undertaken to advance, broaden, and enhance the individual’s technical knowledge and job skills in engineering. These activities typically do not offer CEU’s or PDH’s and include company or other organization sponsored non-proprietary, in-house training sessions and engineering related education and professional development programs offered at local, state, regional or national society or association meetings and special events. For those of you who need the hours to maintain your CPD status, you can earn three-quarters (0.75) Recertification Unit per contact hour. No partial credit is earned for a presentation lasting less than 50 minutes and you may only claim a maximum of 12 units from this category in a given 2 year certification period. What that means for you is that, assuming we have 9 meetings per season over a 2 year period and each meeting has a 50 minute session, you can potentially earn up to 13.5 units of credit. As noted above you can only claim 12 of those units under this category. Of course that’s a best case scenario and there’s always the possibility that a speaker may cancel or not have enough material to last 50 minutes, but you get the point. You can potentially earn up to a full years worth of CPD recertification units simply by attending our chapter meetings. I think that’s a good deal and you get a vendor paid meal to go with it. Hope to see all of you at our upcoming chapter meeting.6 Carolina Plumbing News - September, 2010 Page 13 Noritz Extends 12-Year/6,500-Hour Warranty To Tankless Water Heaters in Controlled Recirculation Systems Tankless water heater manufacturer Noritz America recently extended its 12-year/ 6,500-hour warranty to residential models used with controlled recirculation systems that deliver hot water more quickly to the tap. The extension applies to all Noritz residential tankless water heater products that feature the company’s durable, commercial-grade heat exchanger. Included are the new NR83-DVC concentric tankless water heater, which made its debut this month, as well as the NR98, NRC111 and NR111. “Twelve years typically translates into roughly 1.5 hours of water heater combustion per day,” explains Bob Hitchner, Senior Vice President - Sales, Marketing & Business Development for Noritz. “A residential system that circulates warm water for a couple of hours in the morning and another couple of hours in the evening should make it for the full 12 years.” To qualify for protection under the new residential recirculation warranty, a Noritz tankless water heater must meet the following key stipulations: -The unit must have been installed on or after September 1, 2010, and equipped with a controlled recirculation pump system that has been installed in accordance with the Noritz Installation Manual. -Water heater operational time must not exceed 12 years, or 6,500 hours, whichever comes first. (Note: Operational hours are the hours of actual usage, as counted and stored in the water heater controller.) -The recirculation pump must be controlled by an aquastat, which activates the pump when the water temperature falls below a minimum set point and deactivates it when the water temperature reaches the maximum set point. Noritz also strongly recommends the usage of demandtype timers and sensors to confine pump activation to peak usage periods, further reducing the load on the water heater. “We love the luxury and water savings that a well-designed recirculation system can deliver,” says Hitchner. “But we also want homeowners and contractors to use common sense when designing such systems.” CONTINUED from PAGE 3 and world markets. Rheem tankless water heaters are ENERGY STAR qualified and eligible for a federal tax credit of 30 percent of the total installed cost, up to $1,500. The Rheem Integrated HVAC & Water Heating System Powered by Tankless Technology is protected by a five year air handler warranty and a 10 year tankless heat exchanger warranty. About Rheem Manufacturing Company Rheem Manufacturing Company (www.rheem .com) is privately held with headquarters in Atlanta. In its 83rd year of operation, the company manufactures a full-line of high-quality residential and commercial heating and cooling systems; tank, tankless, solar, and heat pump water heaters; swimming pool heaters and commerical boilers throughout North American As Hitchner notes, most homes need hot water in the bedroom wing between six and eight o’clock in the morning and eight to eleven o’clock at night. Under these circumstances, the recirculation loop may not be needed for the in-between times; or at least the minimum set point in the loop can be lowered. Why extend the warranty? Noritz residential tankless models used in controlled recirculation systems were previously excluded from the 12-year warranty because of the heavy demands such systems impose on a water heater, particularly its heat exchanger. If hot water is in constant circulation – to be readily available at the tap or shower – the water heater is operating 24/7 as well. “We made the decision to extend the warranty after extensively testing our commercialgrade heat exchangers,” says Hitchner. “We clearly demonstrated to ourselves that Noritz commercial heat exchangers could withstand the additional operational time of a recirculation application.” Begun in 2008, the tests referenced by Hitchner spanned 18 months and involved sideby-side tests of three tankless water heater models: a Noritz NR98-SV and two rival makes and models. To determine the effects of hard water on each unit’s heat exchanger, the water heaters were supplied with untreated city water at a hardness level between 13 and 15 grains per gallon. The units were cycled on and off around the clock, day after day, until failure of the heat exchanger. The two competitive models failed after CONTINUED from PAGE 5 Possibilities the Porcher Solutions Collection and other Porcher luxury bath products, please visit www.porcher-us.comor call 800-359-3261. The Noritz NR98-SV with its commercialgrade heat exchanger lasted 6,700 hours before failing. Based on these results, Noritz calculated the following life expectancies for the three tested water heaters: SIMULATED RESIDENTIAL LIFE IN YEARS AVERAGE USAGE (1 HR PER DAY) Competitor A 3.3 Competitor B 7.6 NORITZ NR98-SV 18.4 HEAVY USAGE (2 HR PER DAY) Competitor A 1.6 Competitor B 3.8 NORITZ NR98-SV 9.2 LIFE EXPECTANCY VS. NORITZ (AVE.) Competitor A About 60% less Competitor B About 80% less NORITZ NR98-SV n/a TEST PROTOCOL: To estimate product lifespan (in years), Noritz (1) set the temperature for both units to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, (2) supplied both units with untreated city water with hardness levels between 13 grains per gallon (gpg) and 15 gpg, and (3) cycled the water on/off 24 hours a day during the test until a leak in each unit's heat exchanger was detected. The estimated lifespan (in years) of the heat exchanger was calculated as follows: Hours of combustion for each product divided by 365. (This calculation is based on average residential water usage of one hour per day.) Noritz attributes the superior performance of the NR98-SV test unit to the thicker, commercial-grade copper used in its heat exchanger, as well as to “subtle engineering nuances that improve the water flow through the exchanger,” says Hitchner. “It’s not good enough to extend a 12-year warranty as just another marketing tool,” he continues. “We needed to know whether our heaters are truly meant for this kind of use. The tests validated that Noritz products with commercialgrade heat exchangers could stand up to the heavy demands of a recirculation system while also outperforming the competition.” Softening the water: Another major determinant of life expectancy for a water heater is the relative “hardness” of the water supply. Hard water has a high scale content that can leave deposits of calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate on pipe, valves and fittings as well as water heating components. Difficult and costly to remove, these highly insoluble deposits also hurt system efficiency while boosting operating costs. Water conditioning with a softener can help minimize scale deposits, but a softener is not a viable option in every locale. Because these devices discharge sodium and other chemicals into the water supply, some jurisdictions have prohibited their use. Softeners also require regular maintenance. A recently unveiled alternative is the Noritz H2FLOW™. This cartridge-based system produces no chemicals or salts, yet achieves a 99.6 percent effectiveness rating in scale prevention. Cartridge replacement is required only once every two years. H2FLOW technology fights scale buildup by changing the chemical structure of the water as it flows through the device, converting hard minerals into soft particles that will not adhere to plumbing-system components – including the water heater. “By preventing scale buildup, H2FLOW offers the added advantage of maintaining the energy efficiency of the water heater over many years of use,” says Hitchner. “With the H2FLOW, even homeowners living in hard-water areas can enjoy the convenience of instant hot water with a well-designed controlled recirculation system that enables their tankless water heater to provide years of reliable service,” says Hitchner. “That is the type of system our new warranty extension is meant to protect.” For more information on the new residential recirculation warranty and the Noritz lines of residential and commercial tankless water heaters, visit www.noritz.com NORITZ AMERICA , a subsidiary of Noritz Japan, has corporate offices in Fountain Valley, Calif., as well as in Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago and Hawthorne, N.Y.
