Topic of the Month: Pediatric Nebulizer
CONTACT MEDICAL LLC Issue 8 April/May 2014 Medical Focus OUR MISSION IS TO SUPPORT DISCHARGE PROFESSIONALS AND CASE MANAGERS BY MAKING PATIENT DISCHARGES RELATED TO HOME HEALTH AND DME SEAMLESS Topic of the Month: Pediatric Nebulizer Give your young asthmatic patients some relief from all this pollen with a Pediatric Nebulizer! Contact Medical provides a variety of nebulizers suitable for all children. We carry units with a toy-like design so that the child can stay involved while the medication is being administered. These products are extremely quiet and are very easy to operate and can dispense nearly all types of aerosol medication. Asthma patients tend to suffer the most during this time of year as pollen can trigger adverse side effects; nebulizers are the best solution to overcoming this in the comfort of one’s home. We carry both heated and ultrasonic nebulizers: A heated nebulizer is an air compressor and medicine container used to convert liquid medicine into a warm aerosol or mist to be inhaled through a mouthpiece or mask. An ultrasonic nebulizer is a medical device that uses high frequency sound waves (3 to 5 megahertz) to convert liquid medicine into an aerosol or mist to be inhaled through a mouthpiece or mask. Ultrasonic technology results in much smaller aerosol droplets and greater drug delivery relative to conventional nebulizers. Contact Medical is like a pin in a haystack when it comes to pediatric specialty DME companies, that being said, our team is dedicated to providing exceptional service for our clients. Buddy the Dog Puff the Penguin Patriotic Duck Using a nebulizer: Under normal circumstances, it should take about five to fifteen minutes to complete the nebulizer treatment. However, if a child taking the medication is uncooperative or crying, the treatment may take longer or the effectiveness of the dose may be reduced. A face mask may also need to be used for the elderly or for those unable to use an inhaler themselves. Medications used in a nebulizer usually include Albuterol, which is a bronchodilator, as well as Atrovent, which is also known as ipratropium bromide. In order for a child to use a nebulizer, the child must have some degree of coordination and be able to cooperate in order for the medicine to be delivered effectively. One of the benefits of using a facemask with a nebulizer is that an infant or elderly person can passively receive the medication when the mask is strapped on and he or she is sitting quietly.
