For many, Great Lent means Fasting.
While this is one aspect of Great Lent,
we also have other spiritual disciplines,
which should be utilized. This year, as
we journey through Great Lent, one of
our goals, in addition to practicing these
spiritual disciplines, we have an
opportunity to reflect on the following
statement by Saint Seraphim of Sarov:
“The true aim of our Christian life
consists in the acquisition of the Holy
Spirit, as for fasts, and vigils, and
prayer, and almsgiving, and every good
deed done for Christ’s sake, they are
only means of acquiring the Holy Spirit
of God”.
Orthodox Lent begins seven weeks
before we celebrate the Resurrection of
our Lord on Pascha. This year, Clean
Monday will be February 23rd. Before
we enter Great Lent, we begin to
prepare for it as we encounter the
spiritual lessons of the Pre-Lenten
Sundays of the Triodion period. As the
Triodion begins in the liturgical life of
the church, we begin using ‘The Lenten
Triodion’, or ‘Book of Three Odes’,
which will be used until Pascha.
The Lenten Triodion can be briefly
described as the book of the fast. When
we think about and practice the spiritual
discipline of fasting, it is important that
we maintain a proper balance between
the outward and the inward. The Lenten
Triodion explains and reminds us that
the outward expression of fasting is the
physical abstinence from food and
drink, and without such abstinence, a
true fast cannot be kept; yet the rules
about eating and drinking must not be
treated as an end in themselves-fasting
always has an inward and unseen
purpose. (Note that in common
Orthodox usage the words ‘fasting’ and
‘abstinence’
are
often
used
interchangeably). In the same way we
are a unity of body and soul, fashioned
by God from natures visible and
invisible as found in the Book of
Genesis. With this in mind, our fasting
should also involve both these natures
at once. We must resist the tendency
to over-emphasize the external rules
about food in a legalistic way, and at
the same time resist ignoring them
as outdated and unnecessary. Both
extremes are a betrayal of the intent of
fasting, and in fact a betrayal of
Orthodoxy, because in both cases, the
proper balance between the outward
and inward has been impaired.
When we remember the words of Saint
Seraphim, the primary aim of fasting is
clear-the acquisition of the Holy Spirit
of God. The Lenten Triodion reminds
us of another aspect of fasting: to
make us conscious of our dependence
upon God. It goes on to say, that
if practiced seriously, the Lenten
abstinence from food – particularly in
the opening days – involves a
considerable measure of real hunger,
and also a feeling of tiredness, even
physical exhaustion. The purpose of
this is to lead us in turn to a sense of
inward contrition and brokenness; that
is to the point that we more completely
appreciate Christ’s statement ‘without
Me you can do nothing’ (John 15:5).
If we consistently take our fill of food
and drink, we can easily grow
PAGE 2
ST. SOPHIA GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH
over-confident in our own abilities, and develop a
false sense of self-sufficiency. The observance of
the physical fast will undermine this sinful
complacency, helping us find the heart of the
Publican rather than the pride of the Pharisee, as
we are reminded by the Gospel lesson read on the
first Pre-Lenten Sunday (Luke 18:10-14).
It would be misleading and inaccurate to speak
only of the element of weariness and hunger. Even
if the fast appears debilitating at first, when we
persevere, we find that it enables us to sleep
less-yet not feel ‘tired’, to think more clearly, and
to work more decisively. As a result, we reconcile
the warning found against pride and hypocrisy
found in the readings and hymns during this
Pre-Lenten or Triodion Season.
If it is important not to overlook the physical
aspects of fasting (which it is), it is even more
important not to overlook its inward significance.
It is not simply a matter of diet, it is moral as well
as physical. True fasting is to be converted in heart
and will; to return to God, to come home like
the Prodigal to our Father’s House. Saint John
Chrysostom reminds us of this when he explains
that ‘abstinence is not only from food, but from
sins. The fast, he insists, should be kept ‘not by
the mouth alone, but also by the eye, the ear, the
feet, the hands, and all the members of the body’.
Saint Basil goes on to further explain that it is
useless to fast from food, and yet to indulge in
cruel criticism and slander with his statement:
‘Y ou do not eat meat, but you devour your
brother’. This point is made in the Triodion, and
especially during the first week of Great Lent.
The inner significance of fasting is best summed
up in the triad of Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving. Our
fasting, if unaccompanied by acts of compassion
and charity, and when it is separated from prayer
and from receiving the Holy Sacraments, becomes
pharisaical. It leads us not towards Christ, but unto
pride, inward tension, and irritability-the spiritual
sins ‘religious folks’ are so susceptible to.
As we journey through Triodion, and enter into
Great Lent, as a community, let’s challenge
ourselves and each other to participate in the
Lenten Services-both the Wednesday evening
Pre-Sanctified Liturgies at 6:00 (followed by a
Lenten meal) and the Friday evening services -
Salutations to the Theotokos at 6:00. And at the
same time, keep all these things about the spiritual
disciplines, and growing spiritually and towards
Christ as our focus. And when we, as a community,
succeed in this effort and journey, we will celebrate –
with even greater joy – the resurrection of our Lord
on April 12.

STEWARDSHIP
We want to thank all who participated in our “Chili Cook Off” last
Sunday. In past events we have stood at the microphone proclaiming
the importance of stewardship and giving back to our place of worship.
Although no loud message was spoken at this event, the silent message
was felt and understood. How beautiful it is to come together to participate in something, such as the Chili Cook Off, or better yet our Divine
Liturgy each Sunday. We didn’t even realize it, but we all participated
in some way. We competed with our Chili, we donated prizes, we
judged, we planned the event, we assisted to clean up, and we tasted.
This is what coming together as a Parish is all about. The same goes to
Stewardship, if we all come together and give back, we then receive
the beautiful feeling of fellowship in return. We are given ALL we
have, our Lord requests a little back, only then to once again fill our
hearts with Love.
We are happy to remind everyone that donations can be made online at www.stsophiagoc.org by clicking on the
"donations" tab at the top of the page; and you can access the 2015 Stewardship Packet Information through the link on
the right side of the web page.
•
We are blessed to have 93 stewards for 2015 and pledges amounting to $136,335.00, compared to our goal of 300
stewards and $326,000.00 in pledges.
•
That is significant progress over where we were at this time last year and we continue to pray for unity and love as
we move forward in sustaining and expanding His Church.

PHILOPTOCHOS
We begin our newsletter this month by thanking the people who support and participate in our many activities
for the benefit of those less fortunate. We invite others of our church family to come and experience the joy
of working together to accomplish these goals.
Philoptochos has a page on the St. Sophia website with more information.
Many thanks to all who baked Vasilopites for our auction –they were beautiful and delicious! Thank you,
also, to those who bid and who helped run the event. We raised over $2400 to send to St. Basil's Academy! It
will be much appreciated.
A special thank you to Vicki Kouroumousis and Elaine Pena for sewing the gold altar cloths and Royal Doors
curtains. They are completed, and they look beautiful!
Information was given at the January General Members meeting for our St Nicholas WTC Shrine at Ground
Zero and Philoptochos Fund Campaign that will be in progress through 2015. Additional Information and
packets will be forthcoming in the coming weeks and months.
Don't forget our Seniors Valentine Luncheon Bingo Party on Saturday, February 7th. It is always an enjoyable and fun event for everyone. Contact Pamela Layden or Georgia Carson to donate bingo prizes.
Our Lenten suppers after the Pre-Sanctified Liturgies during lent will be “pot luck” meals again this year, so
pull out your Lenten cookbooks and make your plans! Philoptochos will provide plates, bowls, napkins, etc.
Volunteers are needed to help with set-up and clean-up on one of more of those evenings. Please contact

Parish Council Note
It is hard to believe that the holiday season has ended. As we begin a New Year, it is my humble honor and
privilege that I have accepted to serve as your Parish Council President. I would like to first thank Roger,
George, Bill, and Sam who are no longer on the council, for their dedicated service to our community. I also
welcome Karen, Harris and Beth and look forward to working with them throughout the coming year.
We have much work to do. The Parish Council will be holding a strategic planning retreat to clarify the duties
and expectations of its members and discuss its mission/goals in the representation and support of the St.
Sophia community.
In February, we will be entering the Lenten Season. This is a time of fasting, prayer, and forgiveness. There
will be many extra services during the weeks that follow as we move toward Pascha which is Sunday, April
12th. Please make an effort to attend as many of these beautiful services as possible.
Let us not forget all the special people in our lives who have shared our love in one way or another. Whether
young or old, woman or man, married or single, everyone wants to be remembered. Let them know you care.
Have a Happy Valentine's Day!!
In His service,
Dean Danos

January proved to be a challenging month with the cold spells. That being said, it certainly didn’t affect our
annual holiday party with our fellow AHEPANS. Everyone who attended had a wonderful time at the
Pompeii.
This month our meeting will be held in the double classroom on February 9th at 7:00pm. We will have a
Valentine theme, so watch your emails for more information. I will try to snail mail to those members who do
not have email. We are collecting 2015 dues now. Please contact me if you aren’t sure if you are current or
not.
We have many important matters to discuss including our upcoming calendar of events and there will be a
presentation by the scholarship committee chairperson. We will also be voting on the revised application and
procedures and requirements for our Mary Vamvoras Scholarship, so please make every effort to be there.
If you have any questions, please contact me or any of our officers or members.
