September 2006
Over the last several months WXXI has been

Dear Friend,
Passion. That’s the first word that I think about, when
I consider there are nearly 400 people in the area who
have been members of WXXI since Channel 21 turned
on its transmitter on September 6, 1966 and began local
broadcasting.
Commitment. That’s another word that rings true when
I think about our original members. A commitment to
advancing education, to supporting quality arts and
cultural programming, a real commitment to helping
our community grow.
Vision. The men and women who had the vision and the
fortitude more than four decades ago to fight the battles to
bring public television to Greater Rochester.
Community. To be part of a community of givers for over
40 years, that’s something special.
Today WXXI boasts a membership of more than 26,000,
the largest of any organization in the Greater Rochester area.
We provide the community with not one television channel
of exceptional programming, but four (five if you count
City 12, our partnership with the City of Rochester.) With
our full-power digital television signal we are able to bring
viewers WXXI-HD, a high definition channel; WXXI-Create,
a 24-hour channel dedicated to the best cooking, travel, fine
living and “how-to” programming public television has to
offer, and WXXI-Q, airing adult education and enrichment
programs and children’s programming weeknights. That’s
in addition to TV 21, with a daytime schedule of children’s
programming that is considered the safest and most trusted
on television today, plus a primetime schedule rich in public
affairs, science programs, documentaries and biographies.
A new service, and one that would have been nearly
impossible to imagine 40 years ago, was using the power
of digital television to assist with Homeland Security and
emergency response training. Using a small portion of our
digital signal, we provide the backbone for a local Emergency
Training and Information Network (ETIN) that allows time
sensitive information to be sent to firehouses, police stations,
ambulances and hospitals.
Although our radio services are a bit “younger” than Channel
21, they’re growing fast. AM 1370, your NPR station, keeps
you current on local and national news. Classical 91.5,
Rochester’s only all-classical music station, brings listeners
beautiful music performed around
the world and here at home. WJSL-FM 90.3
in Houghton provides a mix of classical
music and NPR news while WRUR-FM 88.5,
our partnership with the University of Rochester, is creating
a buzz throughout the region, offering an eclectic mix of
music, along with news from NPR.
Reachout Radio, our 24-hour radio reading service for people
who are visually impaired, continues to keep its listeners
– over 300 of them – connected to the world. And, we’re
proud to have added Rochester Business Journal and City
Newspaper to our reading list.
Speaking of being connected – our national television
productions Second Opinion and Assignment: The World, and
our national radio productions Fascinatin’ Rhythm and With
Heart & Voice keep us connected with viewers and listeners
across the country.
Beyond the screen, WXXI’s Educational Outreach Center
offers workshops for parents and caregivers to improve
readiness for school. Meanwhile, teachers and students can
access Ed Video Online, a school video on demand service
that provides instructional television programs and video
clips for instant streaming and downloading off the Internet.
In fact, our newly revamped web site will allow you more
access to WXXI programs than ever before. If you haven’t
seen the changes, be sure to visit WXXI.ORG.
Our 40th anniversary festivities include a special event on
Saturday, September 30, when we open our doors to our
members, friends and neighbors for an Open House. I’d like
to personally invite you to join in our celebration. From
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. you can take a tour of the station, engage
in a hands-on activity with your child, meet your favorite
radio host, check out the set of Homework Hotline, enjoy
refreshments and – of course have a piece of cake. I invite
you to continue the journey with us over the next 40 years!
Best regards,

Did you know…...
• WXXI first signed on the air on September 6, 1966 with
Julia Child’s The French Chef?
• Ramon Santiago, as a favor for his friend Gap Mangione, agreed to produce set pieces for a series
of performance programs WXXI produced on emerging artists. While waiting for welding to cool and
paint to dry, Santiago used spray paint to produce an “original” Santiago on our truck bay wall.
• Al Franken used our satellite uplink for an interview with CNBC when he was in town earlier this
year. (Which by the way, WXXI offers the only satellite uplink in the Greater Rochester area).
• Simon Pontin had everyone fooled, including then GM and President William Pearce, when he
claimed to be broadcasting live from Cobbs Hill Park. He had all the sound effects including birds,
water and joggers.
• As an April Fools joke one year, master control switched the AM and FM broadcasts so that
Classical music was heard on AM 1370 and National Public Radio was heard on FM 91.5.
• WXXI-TV’s top three membership programs of all time are Horses on Parade, Cats, Les Miserables.
• David Dial, a past TV Programming Director, once gave out his home phone number during a
membership break (instead of our membership phone number) and his then pregnant wife was inundated with unwanted phone calls.
• Our TV Program Director Bob Owens also programs the public broadcasting station in
Binghamton, WSKG-TV, and since then viewership has increased dramatically.
• Mr. McFeeley came into town to help celebrate WXXI’s Vacation Days 2000 at Eastview Mall.
There he greeted children for more than 8 hours straight, never once taking a break!
• When WXXI brought Red Green to town, 450 Rochestarians showed up at the station wearing
suspenders and flannel shirts.

Marie Antoinette
Monday, September 25 at 9 p.m.
Her name has become synonymous
with the French monarchy and all its
excesses, but there is more to the story
of Marie Antoinette than the simplistic tale
of a frivolous sovereign. This film traces
her journey from the splendors of her
childhood in the palaces of the mighty
Austro-Hungarian Empire to her final
hours in a squalid French prison cell.
Cincinnati Pops: Take Me to the River
Friday, September 29 at 10 p.m.
The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra presents a musical celebration
of America’s rivers. Produced in high definition, this sizzling
performance special features everything from upbeat-choreographed routines to soul-stirring jazz numbers. Special guests
include New Orleans favorites Preservation Hall Jazz Band,
baritone Gregg Baker, and pianist and singer-songwriter
Marcia Ball under the direction of conductor Erich Kunzel.
FM91.5/90.3
On Wings of Song
Saturdays at 1:30 p.m., beginning September 23
The Marilyn Horne Foundation continues its 11th year nurturing

series of programs highlight exceptional young artists performing
in a number of recital venues.
AM1370
Life Stories: Women at Work
Saturday, September 2 at 3 p.m.
Producer Jay Allison created an award-winning series of

from small towns, rural areas, and urban neighborhoods.

Be Part of the Conversation - Join Gather.com
If you’ve been listening to public radio’s Marketplace recently, you may have heard the sponsorship spot for Gather.
com. Gather was founded in 2004 in conjunction with American Public Media Group with the mission of bringing public
radio listeners together in an online forum. Often called “MySpace for grown-ups,” Gather.com is a place where adults
connect around shared interests. At Gather you can join groups, read and create content on anything from politics to
poetry, connect with others who share similar passions, or engage in dialog to discuss different viewpoints. Gather
rewards its members for participation and the more you post comments, articles and invite friends to join your groups,
the more points you earn. Gather points are redeemable for cash, gift certificates or may even be used as a donation to
charitable partners.
Gather brings the interactive social networking and social media world to the public broadcasting audience. If you’re not
on Gather, you’re not part of the conversation.
WXXI is participating in two Gather groups:
Second Opinion (secondopinion.gather.com) and The Campaign for Love and Forgiveness (loveandforgive.gather.com)
Join the groups by logging on to Gather.com or through the customized links on the WXXI.org home page.

WXXI Welcomes
Two New Board Members
We love old houses! We can help
with restoration or renovation projects,
regardless of size…
-Chris Jones, Historic Houseparts
Established in 1980, Historic Houseparts is a retail/online
outlet for architectural antiques and restoration supplies.
Featuring both salvage from pre-1940’s homes and buildings
as well as new merchandise suitable for old homes, they
specialize in nostalgia with a huge inventory of antique
building materials: doors, woodwork, stained glass, fireplace
mantels, etc. They also offer new door and cabinet hardware
of all sizes, styles, and finishes, including their own line of
reproductions.
“We love old houses!” explains Chris Jones of Historic
Houseparts. “We can help with restoration or renovation
projects, regardless of size, with a constantly changing
inventory of hard to find items, antique, and new merchandise.
Not your average antique store, we now offer lamp restoration
on antique fixtures, hardware restoration services, and
leaded and stained glass repair.”
A WXXI partner for approximately ten years, Historic
Houseparts has an annual TV schedule. According to Chris
Jones, it was an easy decision: “Our goals of preservation
and restoration are enhanced through WXXI programs like
This Old House, New Yankee Workshop, Antiques Roadshow,
and History Detectives. I think we are reaching people who
enjoy the unusual nature of our business and share our
values. The rewards are two-fold. The marketing end of
it has obvious payback, but the personal satisfaction that
comes with supporting WXXI is also rewarding. I have been
watching since I was a child and could not imagine local
programming without WXXI.”
Chris Jones offered additional advice to potential WXXI partners: “The people at WXXI are your neighbors, family, and
friends. The viewers and listeners are the same. Your local
advertising budget, regardless of size, should include WXXI on
some level. There is truly something for everyone on WXXI.”
Saturday October 28th is the Annual Tent Sale at Historic
Houseparts. Visit www.historichouseparts.com.
Karen R. Rulison is a social
worker for the Rochester City
School District, where she
provides group and individual
counseling sessions and crisis
intervention. Prior to working
with the city school district,
Karen was a social worker at
Genesee Hospital. She holds a
Bachelor of Science in Sociology
from SUNY Brockport and a Masters of Social Work from
Marywood College in Scranton, PA. In addition to serving
on WXXI’s Board of Directors, Rulison is also a member of
the National Association of Social Workers, a national and
local member of PKU Parents Association and a former
board member of the Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley.
Tony Tortorella is currently the
Vice President of Sales for the
Human Resource Services
(HRS) division of Paychex,
Inc., a leading provider of
payroll and HR services for
small and medium-sized
businesses across the U.S.
He is responsible for the
company’s HRS product line,
which includes 401(K) recordkeeping and employee
handbooks, among other products. He leads the sales
operation for Paychex Premiersm Human Resources, an
administrative service organization (ASO), and Paychex
Business Solutions (PBS), a professional employer
organization (PEO). Tortorella also oversees the sales
and distribution of insurance products through Paychex
Agency, Inc. Tortorella’s career accomplishments at
Paychex include playing a key role in developing and
founding the company’s National Sales Support division,
which now includes more than 160 telephone salespeople. Today, Tortorella is responsible for a division
sales force of over 500 professionals, generating HRS
revenue of $325 million during fiscal 2006. Tortorella
joined Paychex in 1987 and holds a Bachelor of Science
in Management from St. John Fisher College.

WXXI Participates in New York Matters
New York Matters is a project designed to enhance the statewide
conversation surrounding our 2006 elections. It’s based on the
premise that an informed public is better able to contribute its
voice to decisions vital to New York’s future. It includes polling of
New York State and regions within the state, papers that dissect
the results and put them in the context of the state elections,
and forums that involve the public and state leaders.
The Center for Governmental Research (CGR) works with
community organizations across the state to begin regional
dialogues about the most pressing issues facing New York.
In Rochester, the CGR is partnering with WXXI Public
Broadcasting Council, Rochester Institute of Technology and
Rochester Area Community Foundation.
In each region, small groups of citizens and grassroots activists
meet to discuss policy options for issues most important to that
region. The Rochester/Finger Lakes region will focus on the
economy and on the cost of healthcare. Then those groups will
convene for a New York Matters forum, held in late September on
the campus of RIT, where they will speak to and ask questions of
a panel of experts and state legislators. Parts of this forum will be
televised by WXXI during Need to Know this fall before election day.
It is the hope of CGR and its partners that this style of
deliberation will get citizens closer to understanding policy
choices – and the costs of following certain policy actions.
This can create common ground between citizen and elected
official – and further the democratic process.
There are several other New York Matters forums taking place
across New York State in September. WXXI television news
and CGR are working together to produce a television special
that combines material from all of these forums. This will air in
October on WXXI-TV and other New York public television
stations. More details to come in the October Station Signals.
Great Turnout for Great Homes Road Rally
About 100 friends of WXXI joined the Great Homes Road Rally to Pam and
Brock Yates’ historic Wyoming, NY home on Saturday, August 5. An idyllic
summer day was spent touring the lush grounds, historic farmhouse and
antique car museum. It was a unique setting to be able to get to know many
WXXI members and to acknowledge their support. The Tackle-Yates House,
known as Farmstead was featured in the WXXI production More Great Homes
of Rochester in 2002. At that time, Brock and Pam gave us full access to the
Federal style home with its floating staircase and 84 windows. They were
equally hospitable at our August Event. Pam spent the entire time giving
house tours filled with historic details and flavored with her obvious love of the
home. Brock held court in the carriage house where eager car enthusiasts,
armed with cameras heard tales of Brock’s many adventures as the creator of
the famed no rules, cross-country road rally, Cannonball Run and as editor of
Car & Driver Magazine. Both established authors, Brock and Pam posses the
marvelous gift of storytelling!
This event is an example of bringing a WXXI local production to life. We have
held other events in Great Homes featured in our series. Local productions
are one of the ways that WXXI fulfills its unique mission to enlighten and
entertain and to enhance the quality of life in our region. We have established
a local programming fund to help support future productions. If you are interested in hearing more about how you can help WXXI tell our stories, please
contact Kathy Russell, Director of Major and Planned Giving at (585) 258-0319.
Our sincere thanks to Pam and Brock Yates for their tremendous support
and friendship!

Adventure Lodges of North America: Canadian
Adventure Lodges Airs /1 at 2 p.m., /2 at 12
Noon and / at 10 p.m.
This program takes viewers on an intimate journey to remote
outposts in places of awe-inspiring beauty - from a three-story
floating resort in British Columbia to Alberta’s rocky mountains
Sundance Lodge, accessible only on horseback to a late 1800’s
fishing club in Eastern Canada that once hosted prestigious guests
such as Harry Truman, Theodore Roosevelt and former British
Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The program highlights the
history of the lodges and introduces the people and wildlife that
live harmoniously in these unique natural destinations.
Expo - Magic of the White City Airs /8 and /11 at
8 p.m. and / and /10 at 7 p.m.
Narrated by Gene Wilder, this program immerses viewers in one
of American history’s grandest spectacles. Chicago’s Columbian
Exposition of 1893 unveiled many of the Victorian era’s greatest
achievements in art, architecture, science, technology and culture,
including world “firsts” like the ferris wheel. The number of exhibits
and size of the fairgrounds, designed by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, surpassed even that of the 1889 Paris
World’s Fair where the Eiffel Tower was dedicated.

Wright in Buffalo
Buffalo, New York has the unique privilege of having more
Frank Lloyd Wright structures than any other city in America
outside Chicago. This architectural collection is due to one
man: Buffalo businessman Darwin D. Martin. The centerpiece of Wright’s work in Buffalo is one of Wright’s earliest
designs, the Darwin Martin House. Built in 1904, it precedes
such masterpieces as the Robie House and Fallingwater and
is considered by many the finest example of Wright’s prairie
house design.
The current restoration of the Martin estate is the springboard into Frank Lloyd Wright’s Buffalo. Contained within the
walls of the estate is the extraordinary story of the 30-year
friendship that developed between Wright and Martin — a
friendship that has been largely overlooked by Wright historians. Through the prism of this friendship, the film explores
the importance of Buffalo during Wright’s early career, the
architectural significance of the Martin estate and the development of Wright’s first large-scale commercial commission,
the Larkin Building.

Wide Angle “Back to School” In 2003, Wide Angle
profiled children in seven countries as they started
their first year of school, often despite great odds.
Three years later, the series revisits each child, filming the first update on their progress in school. The
contrasting lives of these endearing children provide
rich insight into the disparities of opportunity around
the globe.
P.O.V. “Hardwood” This film is a personal journey
by director Hubert Davis, the son of former Harlem
Globetrotter Mel Davis. Mel recalls falling in love with
Hubert’s mother, a white woman, at a time when
racism seemed to make the union impossible. Mel
subsequently married a black woman with whom he
also has a son. Hubert unites both sides of his family,
speaking movingly about the web of love, betrayal and
family ties that binds them all. (R)

American Masters
Explores the Extraordinary Life of Andy Warhol
No artist of the second half of the 20th century was more
famous – or, in the end, perhaps more famously misunderstood – than Andy Warhol. At once the most accessible and
enigmatic, straightforward and elusive, naïve and savagely
ironic artist of his time, he was the Wizard of Icons – the
supreme archeologist of a culture of desire – and the
mercurial Merlin of a mass media age. American Masters’
Andy Warhol is a definitive film portrait of an artist whose
signature works are among the most recognized and sought
after works of art ever created. Directed by Ric Burns and
written by Ric Burns along with James Sanders, the film
is narrated by artist and musician Laurie Anderson and
features artist Jeff Koons as the voice of Andy Warhol.
Episode one chronicles Warhol’s life -- from the slums of
Pittsburgh to the height of renown as a pop painter. Episode
two includes exquisite, controversial and seldom seen
© 2006 by Gretchen Berg
selections from Warhol’s screen tests and films.

The Year of the Museum
2006 is America’s Year of the Museum, celebrating the
many ways that museums connect us to the great history
and mystery of life and civilization. WXXI is proud to join
in the celebration as it airs two specials, Great Museums:
The Year of the Museum, from the producers of the Great
Museum series. And through the remainder of 2006, WXXI
will produce and air special 3-minute segments highlighting
Rochester’s many great museums.
The Museum of Modern Art: In Our Time airs Thursday,
September 7 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV
What do the super stars of modern art -- Van Gogh,
Matisse, Picasso, Pollock, Warhol -- have in common with
the Vincent Black Shadow motorcycle and an Apple iPod?
All share the stage at New York’s Museum of Modern Art
(MoMA). Here the two big questions are: What makes it
modern AND what makes it art? MoMA’s scholars, along
with David Rockefeller (son of MoMA founder Abby Rockefeller), prove that the modern art of any age is not the
newest; it’s the next.
Riches, Rivals and Radicals: 100 Years of Museums in
America airs Thursday, September 14 at 8 p.m. on WXXI-TV
Discover the commanding and charismatic characters
whose fervor fueled the 20th-century revolution that changed
America’s museums from dusty and elitist to dynamic and
democratic! This landmark public television special features
museums from coast to coast and is hosted by Susan Stamberg, award-winning national correspondent.

While WXXI turns 40, Sesame Street celebrates its 37th year in production. The award-winning series first debuted on
WXXI-TV, and on public television stations across the country, in 1969 and since then has helped ready generations of
children for the challenges of a formal educational experience. The groundbreaking show’s 37th experimental season
will go “back to basics”, focusing on preparing today’s preschoolers for their first classroom experience.
As part of the program’s curriculum for this season, Sesame Street will address the critical stages of development that
help children get ready for school. Whether the focus is on learning about emotions; developing task persistence; learning how to take turns, share or how to follow directions; making new friends or learning how to interact in a social group;
the series’ underlying goal is to engage and educate children of the challenges they may face as they enter school.
Building on last season’s successful campaign to help children establish an early foundation of healthy habits, season
37 will also include new segments aimed at healthy eating, physical activity and hygiene.
In addition, Sesame Street will introduce a brand-new character, Abby Cadabby, the first new female Muppet to join the
program in over 13 years. Abby, whose catchphrase is “that’s so magic”, is a pink “fairy-in-training” who uses rhyme and
magic to express herself - a youngster who knows just enough about magic to get herself in a jam but not always enough
to get out of trouble. Young viewers will follow Abby as she meets everyone on Sesame Street, even grouchy Oscar, and
come along as she goes to school for the first time with her new friend Baby Bear. At school, she meets her new teacher
Mother Goose (performed by the legendary actress Shirley Jones) and a multitude of new students including Jack and
Jill, Peter Piper, Hansel and Gretl, and Mary, whose little lamb seems to be the focus of a prank on the first day of school.

From the Virginia Arts Festival in Norfolk, VA. Featuring
a flute choir from the area and a very young pianist from
Newport News.
Béla Fleck, the man who’s redefined the banjo, is this
week’s special guest. He joins young musicians to
perform Bach and his own arrangement for string quartet and banjo of a beautiful Irish folk song. Plus, a young
violinist fresh from an appearance on Martha Stewart’s
television show gives Béla some much-needed redecorating tips.
Celebrating the adventuresome spirit of the young
people on our show, this program features kids who
brought us extraordinary performances of out-of-the-way
music. Hear quizzical piano music of Polish composer
Milos Magin and a fabulous and raucous piece written
by a 10-year-old boy from New York City.
From the Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas, highlights
include a teenage pianist from Texas performing music
by Liszt, and a young flutist from Kentucky performing
the music of Georges Hue. We’ll also have a round of
student vs. teacher musical jeopardy.

Deconstructing
Stories of the
Vietnam War
This ground-breaking documentary series on Vietnam
brings together the stories of those who experienced the
Vietnam War from both sides of the conflict. Among those
included are both Americans and Vietnamese who fought
fugitives, the drafted and draft resisters, women, children
of soldiers and storytellers. The voices of the era are also
accompanied by the music and writing of the time, from
The Doors to the club music of Saigon. The series opens
with “Wandering Souls,” which follows Lt. Homer Steedly
from the moment in the jungle when he shot and killed a
young medic, to his return to Vietnam 30 years later to
reconcile with the man’s family.
