Sylvia Marie Barber began playing as a young child and turned professional at age nine!
She was on several radio shows, then Horace Height, Lawrence Welch, Disneyland,
and many other TV and radio shows.
Sylvia can show off more styles than any accordionist you may have ever seen or
heard. She is fast-fingered, does wonderful fills, and is hilarious if called for. Ms. Barber
is totally entertaining.
As a teacher, as well as a performer, Sylvia can show you "tips and tricks" in half an
hour, skills that would take more than a year to learn on your own -- like techniques, styles, triple shake (fantastic), etc.
This is one performance you don't want to miss. AND, she will be here offering AAC members private lessons until Thursday, immediately following the October meeting. The lessons are incredible, and you WILL come away with a new surge of wanting to practice what you learned from her. Sign up for lessons as early as our September meeting.

Murl Sanders, of Seattle, Washington, is an independent modern accordionist, pianist, composer,
teacher and recording artist who plays Pop, Rock, Zydeco, Country, Jazz, Blues and various ethnic
styles on accordion and piano. He has worked with such diverse national and international artists as:
Chuck Berry, Etta James, Theodore Bikel, Peter Duchin, Leslie Gore, and the Von Trapp Children. He leads his own band, does solo work, composes and arranges music, sings, plays piano,
harmonica, Hammond B-3 organ. keyboards and teaches privately.
His important accordion influences include Richard Galliano, Ken Olendorf, the Brazilian Sivuca,
Jazz greats Art Van Damme, Frank Marocco, Leon Sash and Tommy Gumina, the Argentine bandoneonist Astor Piazzolla. Zydeco / Cajun players Clifton Chenier, Geno Delafose, CJ Chenier
and Bruce Daigrepont. Tex-Max artists Los Lobos and Flaco Jimenez. Celtic and European players Maria Kaliniemi, Joe Derrane, Phil Cunningham and Ivo Papasov's band. Various Brazilian,
African and Klezmer players interest Murl as well.
Some of Murl's other musical influences are Keyboardists Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Billy Preston, Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Richard "Groove" Holmes and Jack McDuff.
Saxophonists John Coltrane, Charlie Parker and Stan Getz. Guitarists B.B. King, Freddy King
and Eric Clapton .
All have played a role in expanding his accordion consciousness and style.
Murl considers his friend and colleague, FRANK MAROCCO, to be the best Jazz accordionist alive.
Frank Marocco has been a big influence on Murl in recent years.
Murl definitely has eclectic tastes in music and that curiosity has allowed him to play in many different situations.

September 15th Meeting, Special guest Luis Fanucchi, Review By Raye Donatella ( pages 2 and 11 )
Our pre-meeting music was played by Frank Schweller and Dennis
Humlicek. They played a wonderful variety of songs, including
“Wooden Heart”, “Save the Last Dance For Me”, “Paper Roses”,
“Goodnight, Irene” and many more. These two have become my
favorite duo – they each play a couple of different types of accordion,
and the sounds they create are great! Thank you, gentlemen.
Then Dominic Feroce played a
trio of true Italian melodies: “Las
Sarella”, “Bionda Mia Bella
Bionda”, and “La Filanda”.
Beautiful songs beautifully played.
We always enjoy your playing, Dominic.
Elmer Faser, who plays Fridays and Saturdays at Haus Murphy’s in Glendale, began
with “Bergavada Buhden”, then played
“Just Because Polka” and the “Cuckoo
Waltz”. Your playing is so smooth, Elmer –
no wonder you’ve been at Haus Murphy’s so
long!
Now it was time for our headliner, Louis
Fanucchi. What a treat! He brought along
his friend and violinist, Rachel Lopez
Jimenez, whose playing added a wonderful
sound dimension to the accordion. They
played some selections from Astor Piazzolla’s Artentinian tango collection, including “Sens Unique”, “Musette a la
Mode”, and “Adios Nonino”. As Rachel stepped aside, Louis flowed easily into
“A Concert Suite For Accordion”, by Tchaikin, “Guaglione”, “La Campanella”, then switched to a Tex-Mex styling and played “Hey Baby, Que Paso”,
“My Camaro”, and “She Belongs to El Diablo”. From there to a wonderful
treatment of the Godfather, with “Brothers Mourn”, “Love Theme from Godfather II”, “Love Theme from Godfather I”, “Michael’s Theme”, and completed
the medley with the “Godfather Mazurka” and the “Tarantella”. Then Rachel
rejoined him for the “Godfather Waltz”. Louis and Rachel then did “Freilach
#1”, and ended his set with
“Libertango”. What a breathtaking performance, played to perfection to a very appreciative audience that gave him several standing ovations! Come back soon,
Louis! And thank you, Rachel – we truly enjoyed you.

Most of you know the Arizona Accordion Club operated a food concession stand
last April at the PIR NASCAR races and earned just over $4,500.00 for the Club.

It’s noisy, physically demanding with long days and No pay. The up side is
Free parking, All you can eat, Excitement , hand shakes, pats on the back from
other appreciative volunteers and Club members. And most important the pride that
every time somebody looks you in the eye and says “Thank You!” , you know you
did a great service to many people in and outside the club.

The Club earned this money as a result of only 30 volunteers over a three-day
period ! Some of these people were not even members of our club. We averaged
$15,000.00 per day in sales. Pretty darned incredible!
In November, the NASCAR event is “four full days” versus three days last April. We
desperately appeal to each of you to set aside one day, even a partial day, if you
can, to help us serve concessions to the tens of thousands of fans that attend
these races.
On this four-day event, our earnings for the Club could total over $6,000.00. God
blessed us with this opportunity, and we have the option to do this every April and
November of every year, providing we do it properly. Please, help us take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime chance to make a difference. If we can’t put together
enough volunteers to work this stand in November, this opportunity will be lost
forever.
Earnings from this are used for so many needs for the club. Our scholarship program, continued outstanding entertainment at the meetings, the continuation of
both our wonderful newsletter and website, not to mention the comfortable and
enjoyable church we hold our meetings at each month with the availability of food
and drinks as we desire and many other benefits.
Your help, your sacrifice and your hard work will mean so much to so very many
people who love the accordion and its music.

Symphony Gold Excelsior at Phoenix Symphony Hall

It is September 13 and The Phoenix Symphony is about to perform Bartok’s “Concerto for Orchestra”
when to our surprise eight men and one woman walk on stage and perform gypsy music from Russia, Romania and beyond. This is the setting that Bartok drew his folk melodies from for his concerto. Two fiddles, a
guitar, a drum, a tuba, a clarinet, a trumpet, a singer, and my Symphony Gold. Yes, I let Patrick Farrell of
the famous Romashka performing troup use it so he wouldn’t have to ship his Guerrini from Brooklyn,
NY. I wound up with a very entertaining weekend of music,
stage side tickets to the Phoenix Symphony, a brand new
CD titled “Mnemosyne” by Ljove and the Kontraban on
which Patrick performs, and a lasting memory of a brief
friendship with a wonderfully talented accordionist. This CD
contains many original songs composed by the performers
and I especially like track 3, “Walking on Willoughby” by
Mr. Farrell. I had never heard my accordion played in this
gypsy style, and I am now a fan of Romashka.

On Friday, September 12th the Arizona Accordion Club Ensemble was invited to play for the Awards Ceremony for
the Hassayampa Elementary School. The Kindergarten through Fifth grades were celebrating Italy as part of their
"Festival Friday". The ceremony and performance were at the beautiful Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts
in Wickenburg, Arizona.
Our group consisted of Jack Dermody, Laura Varken (a friend of Jack's daughter from ASU and a beautiful singer),
Lester Rossner, Jay Stevens, Josip Baginac, Ted Lee, Chuck Voinovich, and Pete Donatella. They put on an
Italian presentation which included the "Tarantella", beautifully played by the whole group, with Josip playing on the
Tamboritza, a mandolin style instrument of Croatia, "Che Fieroro Custume" (sung by Laura Varken in ITALIAN!), the
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles song (for those of us who are beyond the years of the ninja turtles, they are Donatello,
Rafael, Leonardo, and Michaelangelo) sung by our own mutant ninja turtle, Pete Donatella, "Forget Domani", only
the words were "Everybody Loves Spaghetti" sung by Pete and all 500 students, a rousing rendition of "That's
Amore" sung by Laura Varken and our own Jay Stevens, a heart lifting version of "On Top Of Spaghetti", again
sung by Jay Stevens (who knew Jay had such a great Italian voice??), and closed with Jack Dermody playing a 12
bass accordion and singing "It's a Small World After All" in French, Spanish, Italian and Hawaiian – (which is, of
course, English). Not only did our audience enjoy it, our players had a blast!!
Our thanks go to Mr. A, Mike Anderson, Principal of Hassayampa Elementary School, Mrs. D, Denise Douthat, the
Music teacher, and all the people who set up the sound system and choreographed the whole thing. And, as a reward
for doing a good job, Mr. A presented everyone of our group with a Hassayampa School T-shirt!
Oh, and in the course of the conversation with the technical person who set up our group, he casually mentioned that
the Mayor of Wickenburg plays the accordion quite well ! We need a Wickenburg representation in our club!
That was a fun gig.

The Arizona Accordion Club
After the break, Joan Monti, accompanied by
Jay Stevens on bass, Jim Winning on drums
and vocals, and Carl Nyberg on guitar did
“Ain’t She Sweet”, “Sioux City Sue”, and
“More Beer” complete with audience participation. That was a fun set, and all of us loved it.
Again, sincere thanks to Carl, Jim and Jay – I
know all the players appreciate you guys, and
the listeners do, too.
Polka time now, and Jerry Syzmanski, with sidekicks Lester Rossner and
Pete Donatella, got our feet tapping to “Lake Erie Polka”, “Sheboygan
Polka”, and “You’ll be Sorry”. Jerry, you’re the guy they write polkas for!
Our esteemed leader, Jack Dermody, who had borrowed Pete’s 5 year old
great-grandson’s 12 bass to play at the gig in Wickenburg, became totally infatuated with it and wrote an original polka titled “12 Base Polka”, which he
played with lots of vim and vigor! Great, Jack! And the lyrics were really
clever!
John Smoltz, who plays at two different restaurants, the Black Forest
Mill on East Indian School, and the White Eagle Deli in Surprise, got
up to close out the evening. He played “Too Fat Polka”, “Apples,
Peaches and Pumpkin Pie”, “Just Because”, “Bye, Bye, Baby” and
“Smoray”. At this point he was joined by Pete Donatella and Elmer
Faser to back our own Caruso, Jay Stevens, singing “That’s Amore”.
I’m telling you, Jay – you’re one of the club’s hidden treasures! John
went on to play the “Musette Polka”, thus ending our evening of superb entertainment.
