Congratulations to Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience on winning Best Regional Roots Music Album at the 2014 56th Grammy Awards, which took place in Los Angeles, CA. on April 6th, 2014. would you like to play something at this meeting? call Phil 480-427-2394 or email at azaccordions@gmail.com Face Book https://www.facebook.com/pages/ARIZONAACCORDION CLUB Page 2 The Arizona Accordion Club MENU for May 19th, 2014 - Cheese Enchilada Casserole, Mini Quesadillas, and Mexican Corn APRIL 21st, 2014 MEETING: by Raye Donatella Headliner Richard Noel, with Pete Donatella playing pre-meeting music My very favorite accordion player in the whole world, Pete Donatella, played pre-meeting music or us. He was accompanied by Jim Winning on drums and Bill Burkett on mandolin. (and yes, I am partial!) They played every beautiful song you can imagine - a really fun hour for all of us! You guys are the greatest! Jay Stevens played his new Concerto accordion now - he strolled and sang, looking for someone who could whistle to the chorus of “Eh Cumpari,” then he sang “Way Marie,” then the “Tarantella” and segued into “Come To the Sea.” Really enjoyable, Jay Next up was John Trippon - he played “Bella Italia,” “Marijana” and finished up with “Under the Double Eagle.” You played as pretty as always, John. Jack Dermody came up now - he played and sang his original polka “Twelve Bass Polka,” then “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and his own version of “I Don’t Know Why,” ending his set with “You’re Good Lookin’.” Nice, Jack. Our featured entertainer, Richard Noel, from Bakersfield, stepped up now playing his newest version of the Roland accordion. He began his set with “If I Were a Rich Man,” then “You Were Always On My Mind,” “Sway,” “I Owe My Soul To The Company Store,” “Blue Danube,” an original Buck Owens tune “The Streets Of Bakersfield,” then “After the Lovin’”, “Chariots of Fire,” “The Wedding Tarantella,” a familiar samba that I can’t recall the name of, then “Tico, Tico,” an Irish Drinking Song,” “Beer Barrel Polka,” and now a medley:“ Edelweiss,” “Doe, a Deer,” and “My Favorite Things.” He continued with “Under Paris Skies,” “Rose of San Antone,” a rousing version of “In the Mood,” “Espana Cani,” and finished up with the theme from “Phantom Of the Opera.” Wow!! That was an impressive show, Richard! Please come play for us again soon. Now a visitor from Seattle, Washington played for us. Richard Swenson played on his beautiful red Roland button box beginning with some lovely Scandinavian songs, then “La Campagnola,” It was a pleasure to have you play for us, Richard. Come join us again next time you’re in town. Our next act was the duo of Frank Schweller and Dennis Humlicek to play “This Is the Day the Lord Has Made,” “Chapel In the Valley,” and “Blue Eyes Crying In the Rain.” Good job, guys - we always enjoy you. Leigh Dechaine, accompanied by Jim Winning on drums, played and sang to end the evening. Leigh began with a Minnesota song, then “Rockin‘ Rye,” “San Antonio Rose,” and closed with “Sweet Sue, Just You..” Good to hear you again, Leigh. Now, in answer to several requests, here is another “as my Dad always said” - “The biggest problem in winter is how to get 72 inches of son to shovel 3 l/2” or snow!” I thought that one was appropriate for the winter they’ve had back East. See you in May. The Arizona Accordion Club Table of Contents Cover Chuck and Jay President Phil’s Message Our Meeting ! Small audiences, no pressure, we would like you to show us what you’ve been practicing in your at-home performances. The club is now actively planning next spring’s concert. Please submit any ideas you have to me at the meeting or by email/phone. Please continue pitching in to move tables and the sound system after the meeting. I need all of you who enjoy our meetings and performances to help in the cleanup and teardown of the hall tables at the end of the meeting. Please stay an extra five to ten minutes after the close of the meeting to allow us to keep a good relationship with the church and their staff members.
