MENU for AUGUST 19, 2013 - Vegetable Lasagna with Garlic Bread
JULY 15th MEETING - SUMMERTIME OPEN PLAY AND JAM NIGHT by Raye Donatella
Pre-meeting music was performed by Elmer Faser. Elmer and his tuba player,
Duane Tendick, have been the weekend entertainers at Glendale’s Haus Murphy German restaurant for several years. Elmer played solo this evening - a very beautiful
and varied selection that included such tunes as “Small World,” “Wooden Heart,”
“Never On Sunday,” and many others. Just great, Elmer. Thank you.
Pete Donatella on accordion, with Jim Winning on
drums were joined by special guest Amy Sexton, our
granddaughter - (the last
time she sang for us, she
was about eight and a half
months pregnant.....this time
our beautiful five month old
great-granddaughter was at
the back of the hall sleeping
through all the music.) They began with Amy
singing “Blue Moon,” followed by “Papa, Won’t You Dance With Me,” “As Time Goes
By,” and “Seems Like Old Times,” then they were joined by Jay
Stevens to sing a duet with Amy of “Your Cheating
Heart.” Very enjoyable, all of you!
Rosemary Smith
was up next, with
Jim Winning on
drums with
her. They played
“Bouquet of Roses,” “Have I Told
You Lately That I
Love You,” a medley of polkas beginning with
“Julaida Polka,”
and including “Just
Because
Poka.” Thanks,
Rosemary. That was nice.
Now our past-president, Jack Dermody, paid us a visit, again
with backup from Jim Winning on drums. They began with
one of my favorite songs Jack plays, called “Sway.” Then he
played a polka he wrote called “Twelve Bass Polka,” then he
played and sang “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean,” joined by
the audience, then he played a new song he’d written for the
ukulele, but played on the accordion, titled “You Just Gotta
Love It.” Thanks, Jack. Good to see you again.

President’s Message
We gave a tribute to our 19 heroic firefighters who gave their lives
to the Arizona citizens, fighting the Yarnell blaze near Prescott Arizona. The 19 firefighters killed in Arizona were part of an elite crew
known as a Hotshot Team. They work on the front lines of our region's worst fires, including two this season that came before the team
descended on the erratic fire that claimed their lives. Our prayers go
out to the families of these brave men.
The Arizona Accordion club awarded a $250 scholarship to Samantha Harvey who lives in the Los Angeles area. Samantha is a young
California accordionist who will compete at the All-Ireland Fleadh
Cheoil. The Fleadh Cheoil (Irish pronunciation: [fla-chol], meaning
"Festival of music") is an Irish music competition run by Comhaltas
Ceoltóirí Éireann (CCÉ). There are various stages to the competition.
In Ireland there are county and provincial competitions leading to the
All-Ireland Fleadh. In Britain there are regional then national stages
of qualification for the All-Ireland. North America has two regional
qualifying Fleadh Cheoil. The Mid Atlantic Fleadh covers the US
eastern seaboard, eastern Canada and the Maritimes. The Midwest
Fleadh covers the rest of North America from Cleveland, Chicago, St.
Louis, Atlanta and Detroit to San Francisco. Samantha placed first in
the Mid Atlantic Fleadh this year and will compete in Ireland during
August. Samantha will play for us at our January 2014 club meeting.
She takes a very unique approach to the accordion, and we support
her efforts. Good luck at the festival, Samantha.
September is the beginning of the Oktoberfest season. Practice your
polkas and German beer hall songs. I expect our September meeting
to be very festive in the style of the Munich tradition. Get out your
lederhosen and hunters’ hats and wear them at our club meeting.
Join us on August 19th, bring your accordion, or
other instruments, and play for us.
Enjoy the Arizona summer, stay cool and keep
on squeezin’

One of our club’s true success stories was up next - Josip
Baginac - who has been a member for ten years or more,
taking accordion lessons all those years, and has won lots
of national awards, and is now getting ready to leave for
college at University of Arizona in Tucson on a scholarship! Josip played several Croatian songs in honor of
some guests in the audience from Croatia. (Josip’s dad,
and long time club member, Miro, is from Croatia.) That
was wonderful, Josip - we sure loved having you and
your Dad visit us again. Have fun at college!!
Next, several people came up to jam - Jay Stevens,
Jack Dermody, and Josip Baginac on accordions, with
Jim Winning on drums, beginning with “Oh, How We
Danced,” then a rousing beer drinking song Jack
sang to the tune of “Doe, a Deer.” Leigh Dechaine
joined the group as they played “Lichensteiner Polka,”
with Leigh and Jack singing the lyrics in German. Frank Schweller joined the guys next as
they played “Chicken Dance,” followed by “Waltz Across Texas,” with Leigh Dechaine and
Jay Stevens singing the lyrics. “Lady of Spain” was next, then “Wooden Heart” and “Let’s
Have a Party,” “Tick Tock Polka” and “Blue Skirt Waltz” sung by Jay Stevens, Leigh
Dechaine, and Jack Dermody. The group played several more songs, ending with “Beer
Barrel Polka.” Jay Stevens sang “Good Night, Irene” to end the evening. That was fun,
guys. A nice end for the night’s entertainment
Our president, Phil Fox, was to
play three French songs “La Vie
en Rose,” “Under Paris Skies,”
and finished with “Mademoiselle
de Pais.” Very good,
Phil. You’re becoming quite the
entertainer!
Now for a quick “as my
Dad always said”
“These days, about half the
stuff I put in my shopping
cart says “For Fast Relief.”
See you on August 19th.
