Musette Gazette - Arizona Accordion Club
December 2011 Vol. XVI No. VI Presents the Musette Gazette www.azaccordionclub.com THE SQUEEZEBOX BAND January 16 2021 starring Ted Lange and Mollie Busta The Arizona Accordion Club brings us one of America’s hottest polka bands, the Squeezebox band. Squeezbox is a collaboration of award winning musicians led by Ted Lange and Mollie Busta. With a play list featuring over 500 selections, and impressive vocal fluency in English, Czech, German, and Polish, their performances ensure great music and loads of fun, so get ready to dance. The Great FRANK MAROCCO Stars on Monday, February 20th Fasten your seatbelts. One of America’s truly great accordionists will entertain us at our February 20 meeting. Do you like the old standards? Do you like to hear the artist whose sounds fill the movies and TV programs you watch all the time? Do you appreciate a little jazz? Do you want to be inspired? And Frank will grace our stage accompanied by the amazing Frank Petrilli of Los Angeles, CA. Together the two Franks can be found each year at the Frank Marocco Accordion Event right here in Mesa, AZ, each February. Sixty accordionists from all over North America and elsewhere combine their talents for a wonderful workshop and concert. Many or most of those folks will conclude this year’s workshop by attending out meeting on Feb 20. We also understand that we will hear from our own Gabe Hall-Rodriguez and his group Ocotrillo. More Frank Page 9 —> Page 2 The Arizona Accordion Club MENU for January 16, 2012 - Sliced Ham, Scalloped potatoes, Green Beans, Rye Bread and Butter DECEMBER 19, 2011 MEETING - HOLIDAY SHOW by Raye Donatella Pre-meeting music was played by Ted Lee. He began the evening with a variety of songs, including several pretty holiday tunes. Thanks, Ted. Leigh Dechaine, playing accordion and singing, was up next with an assortment of backup players, including Jay Stevens on bass, Big John Cieslak on clarinet, sax, flute, trumpet and vibes (how can one person play that many different instruments?), Buddy Apfel on tuba, Tom Schulz on trumpet, Paul Iarinni on trombone and Jim Winning on drums, putting a big band sound on the music. That got our ears tuned up for the rest of the show. Time for our young players. The Seiser sisters, Drew and Julia, who are Steve and Bonnie Durkitʼs granddaughters, and Ian Rankin played together for the first time ever, and what a great job they did! They played several songs, then they played “Jingle Bells” and were accompanied by the big band players! That was so cute - the expressions on the kids' faces were priceless. The Seiser girls left the stage, and Ianʼs older brother, Joey, set down with his accordion and played a solo, then was joined by Ian and the boys' teacher, Pete Donatella for several more well played songs. Joey put down his accordion and picked up his violin to play two more solos, and was joined by his younger brother, Ian, to play a duet of violin and accordion of “The Can Can.” Another youngster, Michael Cosenza, who is Jay Stevens' grandson, and also plays a very mean saxophone, played several duets with his grandfather on accordion. You boys sounded good! I love to hear all these kids play! Elmer Faser stepped up next, accompanied by Jim Winning on drums, Tom Schulz on trumpet, and Paul Iarinni on trombone After several pretty songs, they were joined by a friend of Elmer's from North Dakota, Henry Nice, also on accordion, for a very “nice” time. Jack Dermody on accordion and Buddy Apfel on tuba, Jay Stevens on bass, and Big John Cieslak on clarinet sat in for an impromptu jam session. That was “nice.” (And all the “nice” quotes are from Elmer, not me.) The Arizona Accordion Club Table of Contents Squeezebox and Frank Marocco President’s recruiting Message Our Meeting ! Great Musicians. The Arizona Accordion Club rides on at full tilt, wouldn’t you say? If you attended the December meeting, you know that we are engaged musicians who have one heck of a good time together. And the quality of our own musicians keeps getting better. Join Our Orchestra. You’ll see on page 11 an appeal for you to join our Orchestra. It’s an accordion orchestra that will rehearse only in the winter and spring – culminating in several concerts at the end of April. This will allow our snowbirds to join. The goals are simple and realistic. The orchestra is different from the previous ensemble because the orchestra will rely on written scores exclusively. This will allow for full participation by all players, especially by those who would be uncomfortable with a great deal of expected improvisation and reliance on “ear” skills. Instead, the orchestra will focus on musical integrity, beauty, and the fun for creating the very best harmonized sounds emanating from a combo of accordionists. Our Winter Programs. WOW! The winter programs are spectacular this year. You saw on this month’s cover the visits in January and February by the Squeeze Box Band and Frank Marocco respectively. In March, we present Sylvia Jorgensen – a favorite among dance circles in the East Valley. Expect not only polkas, but also big band, swing, Latin, rock n’ roll, country – even Scandinavian dances. In April, our club’s very favorite guest is returning the one and only Mario Pedone. Expect a workshop and private lessons on tap from him. Watch the newsletter for more info on that. Update your contact info, especially your e-mail address. If you have not updated your email address with us, please do so asap. This IS the 21st Century, after all. If you have email, you want to be on our list to get news when the newsletter is far from going to press. Use the form on the newsletter back cover as a guide to email us an update of your information. Send it to our treasurer Pete Donatella His email address is pdonatella@cox.net. For your information, we have a new board member who will be in charge of our e-mail blasts – none other than Dr. Howard Van Orden. Stay tuned for those e-mail blasts. Be Active in 2012. Please be active in 2012. And what I really mean is please BE ACTIVE – not just an audience member, but a functioning volunteer and participant in every way that you have time for. The best organizations, in my view, follow a version of Jack Kennedy’s challenge, i.e., “Ask not what the club can do for you; ask what you can do for your club.” Page 4 The Arizona Accordion Club Elaine Andalaro, down from Alaska, a friend and student of Pete Donatella, joined Pete and the big band gang for a set of music that was a little different, Klezmer and Odessa Bulgar style. It was pretty and really toe-tapping! Pete Donatella, Lester Rossner and Jack Dermody played a tango and several French tunes. In truth, they were practicing for a French gig they had coming up and just took advantage of all us unwary listeners! It was pretty, though. Susan Kidd and Elsa Lavessen from Washington state, did us the honor of playing a three song set for us. Very nicely done, ladies! Play for us again while you're here in the valley. Bob Torkelson played several holiday tunes - good to hear you again, Bob. A special Thank You to everyone who brought desserts to share for the holiday dessert table. I think each and every morsel was appreciated! Carlos Solis played “Happy Birthday” to Jesus. Very appropriate, Carlos. Howard Van Orden on his accordion was joined by the big band for a fun version of “The Happy Wanderer.” They played quite a large group of holiday songs as other members of the big band gang and the accordion club picked up their instruments to join in for a jam session including another club member that we don't see often enough, young Andrew Jemsek! Andrew was accompanied by his brother Tristan on drums, and Ryan Eveni on vocals to do a couple songs that included a real oldie called “Paddlinʼ Madelyn Home” and several other tunes. Now Chuck Voinivich and the whole group played some of Chuck's special songs. They finished out jamming! What a happy, festive evening to get everyone into the holiday spirit! Now a quick as my Dad always saidʼ “Old people shouldn't eat healthy foods they need all the preservatives they can get!” See you on January 16, The Arizona Accordion Club Page 5 Newsletter Inputs ? Not only for his mastery of the instrument itself, but for his highly developed musicality. In any style, on the concert stage or in the recording studio, his playing is technically brilliant and musically superb. Frank Marocco is one of the most recorded accordionist in America (and, possibly, the world), having played on a vast number of movie soundtracks, television scores, commercial jingles and record albums, in the studios of Hollywood and beyond. He has recorded for and/or worked with artists ranging from Brian Wilson, Pink Floyd and Madonna to Luciano Pavarotti, conductor Maxim Shostakovich and composer John Williams. He was nominated eight years in a row for the Most Valuable Player Award by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (N.A.R.A.S) and received that award twice. Frank is also a consummate jazz artist and a gifted composer with several of his own albums to his credit. He has played his music for audiences all over the world. Biographical highlights: He was a student of the great Andy Rizzo of Chicago. Traveled with Bob Hope and Les Brown. You hear him on movie soundtracks, TV movies, TV series, record albums, and advertising jingles. Along the way, he has found time to compose and arrange both jazz and classical music. - Notes by Al DiMarco and Peggy Milne 313 N.E. 45th St. 2700 Seattle, WA 98105 (206)-632- Visit Our Web Site www.petosa.com “Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten” Hey if you are in Tucson Visit our good friends at ACT aka Accordion Club of Tucson http://www.accordionstucson.com/ Catch us on the World Wide Web http://www.azaccordionclub.com or My Space at http://www.azaccordionclub.com Find Updates and features on upcoming meetings and highlights of our great guest performers. January 22nd, Gabe Hall-Rodrigues with Ocotrillo and Frank Petrilli will perform at the San Francisco Accordion Club Ocotrillo is comprised of Gabe Hall-Rodrigues (accordion and vocals), Sean Brogan (bass), and Wes Anderson (drums). All members of the trio graduated with degrees in music from Arizona State University (ASU). Ocotillo's repertoire contains a variety of music styles, including classic jazz and standards, older styles, such as Dixieland or New Orleans jazz, as well as music from various parts of Brazil, including numbers by Tom Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Luiz Gonzaga, and more. Frank Petrilli was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, California and started playing the accordion at age seven. At 15, Frank started playing Cordovox and soon after was playing professionally in small combos. He continued to play professionally through college untill he was about 23, when family and work demands took precedence. Frank stayed active musically by playing keyboards and saxophone but his accordion playing remained dormant until 2006. Soon after he started playing again, he attended the first Frank Marocco Accordion Event and began studying with Frank Marocco which still continues today. Currently, Frank performs with the Cesar Mateus Latin Jazz Sextet at various jazz venues in Los Angeles. . Gabe Hall-Rodrigues and Frank Petrilli will be featured performers at the AAA Festival 2012 in Baltimore, Maryland July 11-15 at the Sheraton City Center, Baltimore. DO YOU WANT TO BE PART OF THE ARIZONA ACCORDION ORCHESTRA? Let’s have an orchestra this spring and call it the Arizona Accordion Orchestra. Six people have already indicated they want to join. Here are general parameters. If you’d like to join, please call Jack asap: 602-237-5627. The Season begins in January and ends by May 1. Rehearse for two hours once a week for 15 weeks. Play musical scores – all written, with multiple parts for accordion only. No memorization required. (Over a dozen scores will be selected to work on.) Participate in several 30 to 60- minute concerts at the end of April. Intermediate and advanced players are welcome. Regular attendance is required. Please do not begin if you have to miss more than two rehearsals. Concert attendance is mandatory. Bring a high-quality black music stand that securely holds several open pages. We anticipate no fees, but it is expected you will cover your own expenses for transportation and clothing. Music duplication will be covered by the Arizona Accordion Club. This is an orchestra of volunteers whose only goal should be the enjoyment of ensemble music and the social benefits that normally ensue. So what do you think? Please give Jack a call or send an email. TUCSON FIELD TRIP TO SEE AND HEAR TONY LOVELLO We had a great time wandering down to Tucson on December 11 to join our sister club, the Accordion Club of Tucson. We all got to be up close and personal with Tony’s performance, in a small room with about 30 people. Perfect. Joining forces with our Tucson brothers and sisters was energizing and we hope to do more of that in the future. Our contingent included Dennis Enright, Joan Monti, Jay Stevens, Connie Stevens, Connie’s mom, and Rose and Jack Dermody.
