Donald Wayne Black
According to Don Black his two sons grew up believing their father couldn’t keep a job. A
kinder, more objective assessment is that Don applied his aptitude for numbers and his leadership
abilities in helping to turn around some troubled financial services companies and overseeing
impressive growth at several others.
Don grew up in Regina and studied accounting for a short time at the Regina campus of the
University of Saskatchewan. He then joined local investment firm Houston Willoughby as an
accounting clerk, although he had no idea what a stock or bond was. He soon recognized he
wanted to be a broker, and discovered he was good at it, and at leading people. He became
president of the company at age 32. Along the way he absorbed the lesson from company
founder C. Morley Willoughby about the importance of each generation reinvesting in the
community to make it stronger and better.
Don later helped lead the successful turnaround of Saskatchewan Government Insurance and
then Pioneer Life Insurance after its sister company, Pioneer Trust, had collapsed. After a brief
stint as a car dealer, in 1992 Don became CEO of a small Regina-based investment management
firm. He transformed it into Greystone Capital Management, now one of Canada’s largest
independent investment firms, with approximately $35 billion of assets under management. He is no longer involved in managing
Greystone, but remains as board chair.
Don’s sons Dustin (who has a son and a daughter) and Dallas live in Regina. Don and his partner Leanne split their time between
Regina and Phoenix, Arizona.
Don has been honoured as a life member of the Friends of the RCMP and associate member of the RCMP Veterans Association
for the long hours he devoted to the creation of the RCMP Heritage Centre. He is also a member of the Order of Canada and the
Saskatchewan Order of Merit, among other honours.

Kevin Michael Vickers
Kevin Vickers was appointed Canada’s Ambassador to Ireland in January 2015, after a
distinguished career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and as sergeant-at-arms of the
House of Commons.
Kevin was born and raised in Newcastle (now part of the city of Miramichi), New
Brunswick, and studied at St. Francis Xavier University and the University of Calgary. His
29-year career with the RCMP included postings in Alberta and the Northwest Territories
before being appointed Inspector, District Commander, in the Acadian Peninsula district in
his home province. As the force’s Incident Commander he helped resolve the confrontation
over native fishing rights at Burnt Church, New Brunswick, in 1999-2000. He later served
as Director-General of the Force’s Aboriginal Police Services branch. He has been
recognized for leading Canadian police force investigations into the international drug trade,
and for his work in developing a national strategy for the protection of children from sexual
exploitation on the Internet, resulting in the creation of a national centre of expertise to
combat the problem.
Kevin was appointed director of Security Operations for the House of Commons in 2005, becoming sergeant-at-arms a
year later, with responsibility for 1,000 employees within the parliamentary precinct. In January 2013 he skillfully resolved a
potentially difficult situation when 3,000 Idle No More protesters gathered on the Hill.
The image of Kevin Vickers, sergeant-at-arms, carrying the ceremonial gold mace into the House of Commons the
day after he helped stop the October 2014 attack on Parliament Hill has become part of our national iconography. He prefers
to pass the praise on to his staff.

Kevin is the recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, the Canada 125 Medal and the RCMP Long Service Medal. The
community of Burnt Church has recognized him for his service there. He was bestowed an honorary degree from Mount
Allison University earlier this year.
He and wife Ann have a son, Andrew, who is a police officer in Miramichi, and a daughter Laura. Grandchildren include
granddaughter Reese and grandsons Lucas and Lachlin.

Ann Blair Thomas Callahan
Ann was born on the Peepeekisis First Nation in 1935. Her parents, John and Nora
Thomas, spoke both Cree and English at home. She attended the File Hills and Birtle
Indian Residential schools for 14 years. As a child she attended traditional ceremonies of
her people and was given the spirit name of Wapiskisiw Piyésis (White Birdwoman) by
Elder Ochapawase at age four.
With the support of positive role models she completed high school and then became
one of the first Aboriginal nurses to graduate from what is now the Health Sciences
Centre in Winnipeg, in 1958. Ann began working at the hospital and soon was appointed
head nurse of the Women’s Pavilion, where she stayed until 1973. She left to coordinate
health care for a newly created agency delivering services to people in need. Ten years
later she moved to Red River Community College, where she was an instructor and
academic counselor.
Ann took a variety of courses to expand her knowledge during her career. When she
retired from nursing in 1996, her uncommon commitment to healing and lifelong
learning endured. She earned a bachelor’s degree with a major in psychology, and then a master’s degree in interdisciplinary
studies.
Throughout her life Ann has contributed to numerous initiatives and projects aimed at improving the health of Aboriginal
people and encouraging more Aboriginals to enter the healthcare field. She has lectured widely on the residential school

experience – the subject of her master’s thesis – and helped Elders coordinate healing ceremonies for the File Hills
community.
Ann has received many honours and awards, including the naming of the Critical Services building at the Health Sciences
Centre in her honour and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada.
Ann’s only child, Michael, died two years ago. Her extended family includes two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren,
and what she describes as a family tree branching in all directions.

PLATFORM AWARDS
Governor General’s Academic Gold Medal
This award recognizes the most outstanding academic
performance of a graduate student. The decision of the Faculty
of Graduate Studies and Research Scholarship and Awards
Committee was based on the quality of the thesis/exhibition,
external examiner’s report, quality of the defense, course work,
CGPA, publications and presentations deriving directly from the
research done for the thesis/exhibition, and on awards achieved.
The pool of applicants includes all graduate students who
have a thesis or exhibition deemed meritorious by their
examining committee, and who apply for graduation at the
Spring Convocation, or who graduated at the previous Fall
Convocation. This year there were 47 students eligible for this
competition.
Dr. Darryl Hunter convocated in October 2014 with a
Doctor of Philosophy in Education.
Dr. Ken Montgomery, Associate Dean (Research and
Graduate Programs) in the Faculty of Education, states that “Dr.
Hunter is a scholar of exceptional caliber who has consistently
ranked at the top of his graduate courses.” Dr. Hunter has
received numerous graduate scholarships and awards, including
being co-recipient of the 2014 President’s Distinguished
Graduate Student Award.
Academically, Dr. Hunter’s overall average in his doctoral
work was 92.75. His supervisor, Dr. William R. Dolmage, states
that “in my 25-plus years in the academy, Dr. Hunter is, without
a question, the most capable graduate student I have
encountered.”
Just as noteworthy, Dr. Hunter has co-written a book entitled
“Put to the test: Teacher professionalism and assessment in
Canada,” which is now with the University of Regina Press. His
doctoral research has yielded four journal articles that are in
various stages of peer review and publication, and he has
another article currently in peer review on Canadian middle
years teachers’ classroom assessment practices.

The external examiner for Dr. Hunter’s dissertation, “‘About
Average’: A Pragmatic Inquiry into School Principals’
Meanings for a Statistical Concept in Instructional Leadership”
was Dr. Jerald Paquette, Professor Emeritus. Western
University. Dr. Paquette stated that “this is undeniably a
significant piece of research in its field.” As well, he further
commented that “the originality and scholarship of this thesis
borders on the stunning.”

Outside of her studies, Isabella has a passion for music that’s
led her to take part in the University of Regina concert band as a
flautist, and become a volunteer keyboard player for St. Agnes
Roman Catholic Church. Both of these endeavors require
numerous hours of practice to learn the music, and how to
integrate her portion into the full musical piece. Truly, Isabella
is a distinguished student, in her academics, research work, and
extra-curricular activities.

The Governor-General's Academic Silver Medal is awarded
at convocation to the most distinguished graduating student
receiving a first degree and is based on academic excellence.
Isabella Adriana Hugel is the recipient of this prize at the 2015
Spring Convocation. Isabella is graduating with a Bachelor of
Science in Computer Science, with a Co-operative Education
designation, achieving Great Distinction.
Isabella graduated from Greenall School in June 2010. While
studying at the University of Regina, she has received many
scholarships in recognition of her academic achievements,

In the 2012 Spring/Summer semester, Isabella was the
recipient of a university-sponsored NSERC Undergraduate
Student Research Award, and worked under the supervision of
Dr. Howard J. Hamilton. The title of this award was “Fast,
Flexible Crowd Animation Guided by the Influence of
Individuals on Perceived Quality”. Crowd animation refers to
animating simulated crowds of people or autonomous creatures.
It is used in games, films, emergency planning, etc. Due to the
complexity of choosing actions for many interacting individuals
in a crowd and then animating these actions, crowd animation is
challenging for current systems.
The goal of her project was to systematize the handling of
update rates of individuals in a crowd, based on their perceived
influence on visual realism. In other words, the idea was that
more computer time would be spent on the members of the
crowd who were more easily seen. As a result of the research,
some crowd simulation software was developed and evaluated.
A report was prepared for internal use, but it was not submitted
for publication. Dr. Hamilton also commented, “She is noted
for her many articulate questions in lectures, her careful,
comprehensive work on assignments, and her brilliant
performance on examinations.”
In the 2013 Spring/Summer semester, Isabella was the
recipient of a second NSERC Undergraduate Student Research
Award, and worked under the supervision of Dr. Orland Hoeber.
The title of her project was “Visualizing Temporally Changing
Sentiment in Twitter Streams”. Her work on this project
President’s Medal
The University of Regina President’s Medal is awarded at
each Spring and Fall Convocation to a student receiving a first
degree who has shown academic excellence as well as major
leadership and commitment to extra-curricular activities while a
student. The recipient this spring is Natasha Jocelyn Ku.
Natasha is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, major in
Japanese, with Great Distinction and International Designation.
She is also receiving a Bachelor of Science, major in
Mathematics, with Great Distinction. For a student to attempt
such diverse fields is uncommon; excelling at both, as Natasha
has, with an average of just above 90%, is truly exceptional. The
Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Science each commend
Natasha on this excellent achievement.
Natasha’s academic promise was evident from the beginning
of her studies at the University of Regina. In recognition of her
success at Kipling High School, she was awarded the S.E.
Stewart Faculty of Arts Entrance Scholarship, the Rural Student
Entrance Scholarship and the Centennial Merit Plus Scholarship.
Throughout her studies she earned the Academic Gold
Scholarship four times, along with an award in the Japanese
Language. One of her instructors commented that “[I] can say
unreservedly that she is one of the ten best students I have ever
taught.”
Natasha furthered her studies in Japanese by attending Tenri
University, in Japan, for one year. While there she served as an
ambassador for the University of Regina, and Canada, by
volunteering to teach English and Math in the community. She
also volunteered to serve as a Japanese translator at Queensland
National Park in Australia. She credits these experiences with
improving her confidence as a leader.
In aid to her fellow students, Natasha served as their
representative on the Peer Disciplinary Council and the Faculty
of Arts Undergraduate Scholarship Committee. She has
consistently volunteered with Orientation, Residence Move-in,
Welcome Week and similar activities throughout the semester.
She has also assisted her peers through work as a Supplementary
Instruction Leader for Statistics, and as a Japanese teaching
assistant. One of her proudest signature accomplishments has
been the founding of the Japanese Culture Club on campus.
Through academic, social and cultural activities, the club helps
students from Japan integrate with University of Regina students
interested in Japan and vice versa. “Helping people has become
second nature to me,” she says, bringing life to the University of
Regina’s motto of “as one who serves.”
Natasha is also the recipient of the Faculty of Arts Dean’s
Medal. Additional information about that prize, and Natasha,

prestigious student-led competition in which students from 12
of the top business schools from Western Canadian
universities are judged on all aspects of citizenship. Nicole
was selected by the JDC West team to serve as sole captain
and is continuing her leadership and service in the role of
Executive Advisor to the 2015-16 JDC team.
Nicole also assumed a unique leadership role in the role of
“Lead Teaching Assistant,” overseeing a team of Teaching
Assistants supporting BUS 100 faculty. Nicole’s leadership
and insight helped improve the learning experience and
transition of first-year students. Nicole has established herself
actively in the community, serving in varied and ongoing
roles in several organizations including Hope’s Home, Regina
Food Bank, Canadian Western Agribition, and the
Saskatchewan Roughriders Fan First Hospitality, Regina Folk
Festival, and Habitat for Humanity.
The Faculty of Business Administration and the University
of Regina wish Nicole every success in her future endeavours.
University Medal
The University Medal is presented annually at Spring
Convocation to the most distinguished student – one who has
achieved academic excellence in all courses completed during
the previous twelve months with a minimum of 30 credit hours
in two semesters.This year the University Medal is awarded to
two students: Belma Kamencic from the Faculty of Science and
Tuan Mihn Mai from the Faculty of Engineering and Applied
Science.
In 2014, Belma Kamencic graduated from Campbell
Collegiate, and she is currently working towards a Bachelor of
Science degree program. Over the past academic year, she has
achieved a CGPA of 96.8%. During her first year of study at the
University of Regina, she has already received many
scholarships in recognition of her academic achievements,
including: Centennial Merit Scholarship (2014 Fall), and Dean’s
List; Science Faculty (2014 Fall & 2015 Winter).
Currently, Belma is working with Dr. Tanya Dahms as a
Summer Research Student. When asked about Belma, Dr.
Dahms spoke of her very highly. “Her intelligence, hard work
and superior laboratory skills inspired her first year Chemistry
lab instructor to suggest that she consider summer research. A
first year undergraduate student working for the first time in a
laboratory experiences a steep learning curve, which Belma is
handling exceptionally well. In our lab, she has been
focussed, diligent, quick to learn new methods, organized,
creative and a careful note taker, all hallmarks of a good
researcher.”
The Faculty of Science congratulates Belma on her

Bachelor of Education After Degree (BEAD) Convocation
Prize
The Bachelor of Education After Degree (BEAD)
Convocation Prize was established by the Faculty of Education
in March 2014 to encourage and recognize BEAD students. The
BEAD Convocation prize is awarded to the most distinguished
graduate, with an overall internship rating of “Outstanding” and
and the highest grade point average in the program.
The Faculty of Education is pleased to present the BEAD
Convocation Prize to Karyn Booy, a distinguished graduate in
the Faculty of Education.
Karyn is graduating with a Bachelor of Education (Secondary)
with Great Distinction. She majored in Biology Education with a
minor in Chemistry Education. During her studies at the
University of Regina, Karyn was the recipient of an Academic
Silver scholarship (2014 Fall).
During her time with the Faculty of Education, Karyn found
that the Faculty’s focus on social justice issues helped to
transform the way she views and interacts with students within
the classroom and broader community. This commitment to
social justice is reflected in Karyn’s work with the Sonlight
Christian Reformed Church and the Indian Métis Christian
Fellowship in Regina.
In the fall, Karyn will pursue a Master’s Degree in Biological
Sciences from the University of Manitoba, where she has been
awarded a 2015 NSERC grant to study the impacts of noise
pollution on the resident Arctic beluga population. She is
confident this research will enhance the science education she
provides in future classrooms.

Leon Goldman Scholarship

Faculty of Business Administration Dean’s Medal
The Leon Goldman Scholarship is awarded to the most
distinguished graduate of the Faculty of Business
Administration receiving a first degree at the Spring
Convocation. This scholarship was donated by Mr. and Mrs.
Norman Gleiberman and family to honour Mrs. Gleiberman’s
father, Mr. Leon Goldman, on his 75th birthday.
The Faculty of Business Administration Dean’s Medal is
awarded at each Spring and Fall Convocation to a student
receiving a first degree with a minimum average of 80% who
has shown leadership in and commitment to extra-curricular
activities while at the University of Regina.
The recipient for both of these awards for 2015 Spring
Convocation is Nicole Nameth. Nicole has distinguished
herself as an excellent student, with a graduating program
average of 91.8%. She is receiving a Bachelor of Business
Administration (BBA) with Great Distinction and a major in
Accounting.
Nicole entered the University of Regina in pursuit of
academic excellence and maximizing her potential.Through
determination and dedication, Nicole achieved her academic
goals and developed a particular strength in leadership. Nicole
served as Captain of JDC for 2014-15. JDC West is a
Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation Prize
At each University of Regina convocation ceremony, the
Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) awards a prize to the
most distinguished student of the graduating class in the Faculty
of Education who does not hold another degree. The Faculty of
Education is pleased to present the Saskatchewan Teachers’
Federation Prize to Janelle Zborowski, a distinguished graduate
in the Faculty of Education.
Janelle is graduating with a Bachelor of Education in
Elementary Education with Great Distinction. During her
studies, Janelle was the recipient of an Academic Silver
Scholarship (Fall 2012) and Academic Gold Scholarships (Fall

2013 & Fall 2014). She was also on the Dean’s Honours List in
two consecutive semesters (Fall 2013 & Winter 2014).
Ms. Zborowski has a passion for teaching and cares deeply for
her students and the communities they come from. She has
volunteered at the Student Energy in Action for Regina
Community Health (SEARCH) Initiative and sat on the Adopta-Family committee for Mother Teresa Middle School. For her,
these opportunities affirm the importance of community
partnerships and communal relationships.
During her internship, Janelle integrated Indigenous
perspectives into the curriculum by inviting an Aboriginal
storyteller and artist into her classroom and by having a sharing
circle every day. She is grateful to the Faculty of Education for
helping to prepare her for the experience.
Janelle feels that her success was largely due to the
compassion and understanding of her family, who have proven
to her that holism is the most powerful tool that educators can
employ to ensure the success and well being of students.

Brayden was actively involved with the Regina Engineering
Student Society as Student Representative, and in his final year,
as VP of Communications. He enjoyed being a mentor for
several engineering groups, a student member for IEEE Uregina
Branch, and a volunteer speaker for “What is Engineering”. The
Coop Education Program gave Brayden an opportunity to
enhance his software skills, and build an impressive professional
network while working at SaskTel and GasBuddy.
Brayden has set high standards of academic achievement and
modeled exceptional leadership skills. The Faculty of
Engineering and Applied Science would like to congratulate

Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Dean’s Medal
The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Dean’s
Medal is presented at each Spring and Fall convocation to
recognize the achievements of an outstanding student in the
Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. This year’s
recipient is Diane Adams.
Diane is a Métis woman originally from Sioux Lookout,
Ontario. She is passionate about the environment, public health,
and social equity. During her time as a student, she served as
the President of the First Nations University Students’
Association, leading a national student campaign and making
media appearances in front of more than 10 million viewers.
She also sat as a student representative for the Environmental
Health and Science program and took a leadership role in
FNUniv’s Student Ambassador Program. She also established a
consulting business as a student which has allowed her to draw
on her experiences as a former CBC Journalist as well as her
Métis heritage. After graduation, Diane will continue to expand
that business, having already secured a contract to help guide
how Saskatchewan uses and communicates climate change and
environmental monitoring data. She intends to pursue graduate
studies in toxicology and human health risk assessment, with the
aspiration of engaging more Aboriginal communities and people
in the sciences.

S.E. Stewart Award in Arts
The S.E. Stewart Award is presented each Spring Convocation
to an outstanding student in the Faculty of Arts graduating with
a first degree. The recipient this spring is Shea Erin O’Bertos, a
Luther College student graduating with a Bachelor of Arts
Honours in Psychology.
Shea’s academic performance has been exceptional. She
achieved the Dean’s Honour List in five semesters, won
numerous scholarships, and obtained a cumulative grade point
average of 91.5%. Her honours paper was titled “Emotion from
a Different Angle: How Gaze Direction Affects Recognition
and Spatial Processing of Emotional Stimuli.” Shea won a
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council grant for
graduate work and will begin studies in Clinical Psychology at
Acadia University this fall.

Faculty of Fine Arts Dean’s Medal
Austin Josephson is being awarded the Dean of Fine Arts
Medal, an honour bestowed on a Fine Arts student who has
shown both academic achievement and leadership while
attending the University of Regina.
Mr. Josephson, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts,
Major: Film Production (Distinction), has a cumulative grade
point average of 83.6%, and has demonstrated great
commitment to his university community and beyond.
Austin began his studies at the University of Regina, Luther
College, in the Fall of 2010. A consistently good student and
committed volunteer, Austin has earned a number of
scholarships and awards that recognize his hard work. He earned
the Luther College Part Time Scholarship (2011 and 2012),
Luther Faculty Scholarships (2012, 2013, 2014), the Carla
Thompson Memorial Scholarship (Luther College – 2014), the
Emil and Natalie Krentz Humanities and Fine Arts Scholarship
(Luther College - 2013), and the Mary Pitawanakwat Memorial
Award (2015). Austin also earned a spot on the Dean’s List in
Fall of 2014.
While Austin began and remained a committed Film
Production student throughout his time at the University of
Regina, he developed other interests across many areas. Courses
in Sociology, Creative Technologies, and a minor in Indigenous
Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of
Saskatchewan Gold Medal in Engineering
The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists
of Saskatchewan (APEGS) Gold Medal is awarded annually to
an undergraduate of Engineering and Applied Science who has
shown both leader ship and academic excellence. This year’s
recipient is Brayden Joseph Willenborg. Brayden earned a
Bachelor of Applied Science (Co-op) in Software Systems
Engineering with Great Distinction. In addition to graduating
with an average of 90%, Brayden made the Dean’s Honour List
for eight semesters. He received many awards including
Centennial Merit Plus Scholarship, Academic Gold and Silver
Scholarships, Sask Innovation Undergraduate Scholarship, SPE
Canadian Educational Trust Fund Award, SED Systems

Studies affected his work as an artist. He has come to appreciate
that film can be used to educate, enlighten, and help make the
world a better place.
Austin’s leadership contributions at Luther College have
been substantial. He was involved with the mentorship program
Jump Start, was an active member of the Luther Students
Association and has participated as a student member of their
strategic planning team. His volunteer work at the North
American Indigenous games married his technical skills and
interest in Indigenous Studies with his desire to be a part of an
important event held in our city. In addition to the above
commitments, he continued his volunteer work at the Regina
Lutheran Home that he began as a high school student.
The value that Austin places on being a leader, team
member and engaged member of his community is evident to all
who know him. Dr. Bryan Hillis, President of Luther College,
notes that “Austin works hard, is always happy when you meet
him, and has yet more energy whenever he is asked to help out.”
Dr. Christine Ramsay of the Department of Film notes that he is
a “diligent, dedicate, capable and self-directed student,
thoughtful beyond his years.”
As such, the Faculty is pleased to present its “medal,” a
ceramic hand built sculpture called A Bowl of Fish, to Mr.
Josephson. The piece was created by last year’s Medal winner,
Ms Barbara Goretzky.
Faculty of Science Dean’s Medal
The Faculty of Science Dean’s Medal is awarded each
year to the student that the Faculty of Science nominates for the
President’s Medal. The President’s Medal is awarded at
convocation to the most distinguished graduating student
receiving a first degree and is based on academic standing
alongside a strong demonstration of leadership in, and
commitment to, extracurricular activities. Kristen Aneta Leigh
was nominated for the President’s Medal by the Faculty of
Science for the Spring 2015 convocation ceremony, and is the
recipient of the Faculty of Science Dean’s Medal. Kristen is
graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Concentration
in Ecology & Environmental Biology, achieving Great
Distinction. Kristen is graduating with a Cumulative Grade
Point Average (CGPA) of 87.6%.
As a result of her consistently outstanding academic record,
with term averages ranging from 83.2% up to 91.5%, Kristen
was awarded the Academic Silver Scholarship in the Fall
semesters of 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Outside of her academic studies, Kristen has truly excelled in
her volunteer experiences. She was a Supplemental Instruction
(SI) Leader for one of our Phys 109 sections for the Fall 2014
semester. Volunteering as an SI leader requires several hours of
dedication, both in attending the course with the students and
drafting lesson plans to lead the SI sessions at a later date.
In the fourth year of her university studies, as part of a
business class entitled Innovation and Entrepreneurship, she
opened a community based business called Soulful Sandwiches.
Through this business, in conjunction with Tangerine: The Food
Bar, she sold sandwich vouchers to those that wanted to give
back to the community and to help those in need. The vouchers
were used to provide a nutritious meal in a welcoming
environment to women staying at either SOFIA House, or The
Shirley Schneider Support Centre. SOFIA house is a second
stage transition home for women who have been abused. The
Shirley Schneider Support Centre is a teen mothers program
offered through Balfour Collegiate.
Currently, she volunteers as a Queen of Green Coach for the
David Suzuki Foundation. This program is designed to help
people learn how to make their home a focus of green practices
to reduce their impact on the planet. She will be working with
seven families over the next several months to work these green
practices into their every day routines. This area of volunteer
work is perfectly suited to the BSc in Biology, Concentration in
Environmental Biology & Ecology, that she has completed this
year.
Kristen has shown herself to not only be an outstanding
academic, but also a compassionate person that has led her to
become a strong leader in helping people through innovative and
creative ways. Her volunteer and academic experiences have
been the basis of developing the skills required to help her
succeed in whatever path she chooses to follow in the future.
W.A. Riddell Award in Fine Arts
Mikyla Richelle Jensen is receiving the W. A. Riddell Award
in Fine Arts as the most distinguished graduate earning a first
degree in the Faculty of Fine Arts. The award is based on both
academic achievement and artistic merit. Ms Jensen is
convocating today with a Bachelor of Music (Performance) with
Great Distinction.
Mikyla began studies at Luther College, University of Regina
in the Fall of 2011. Her academic achievement during high
school and musical proficiency demonstrated at her audition
were recognized with a number of entrance awards. She earned:
the Dr. James McConica Entrance Scholarship in Music, the
Residence Scholarship in Music (Luther College), and the
Centennial Merit Plus Scholarship.
The awards and designations have kept coming throughout the
last four years. Mikyla earned a spot on the Dean’s list every
semester as well as the following: Academic Gold Scholarships
(Fall 2012, Fall 2013, Fall 2014); Residence Scholarship for
Music Students (Fall 2012, Winter 2013); Regina Musical Club
Scholarship (Winter 2013); Luther College Faculty Scholarship

Mikyla has maintained an outstanding academic and
performance record while also serving as a leader within the
Music Department, most recently as the Music Student
Association President, and within the provincial music
community. In addition she has volunteered with Campus for
All, and has mentored younger music students. Professor Brent
Ghiglione expresses the sentiment of those who have known
Mikyla during her time here. “My few words cannot begin to
describe the talent or quality of this young woman. I do know
that she is a wonderful musician and works relentlessly on
behalf of others.”
The Faculty of Fine Arts wishes her the best as she begins her
Master of Music (Flute Performance) at the University of
Manitoba this fall on full scholarship.
University Prize in Science
The University Prize in Science is awarded at convocation to
the most distinguished student graduating with a first degree
from the Faculty of Science. Isabella Adriana Hugel is the
recipient of this prize at the 2015 Spring Convocation. Isabella
is also the recipient of the Governor General’s Academic
Silver Medal. Additional information about Isabella can be

Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies Dean’s Medal
The Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies Dean’s Medal
is awarded to Ms Triston Riemer at the Spring 2015

Convocation of the University of Regina. Ms Riemer’s program
of study was in the Human Kinetics area of concentration within
the Bachelor of Kinesiology program and her graduating
average was 82.2% allowing her to convocate with Distinction.
Her overall average based on all courses taken at the University
of Regina was also 82%.
Ms Riemer came to the University of Regina from the
community of White Fox, SK, and completed her education at
the L.P. Miller Comprehensive High in Nipawin, SK. In
September 2010 Triston began her studies in the Faculty of
Kinesiology & Health Studies. She was also recruited to play
hockey with the Cougar women’s hockey team.
Triston’s involvement as a five-year member of the Cougar
women’s hockey team enabled her to enhance her leadership
skills. As an integral member of the hockey team she was
appointed as Assistant Captain in her fourth year, followed by
appointment as Captain in her senior year on the squad. She
took on both roles with enthusiasm and passion, set vision with
the team, coordinated and ran team meetings, and addressed
student athlete issues or problems with a high degree of tact and
professionalism. Coach Sarah Hodges notes that “Triston leads
by example with her work ethic and her dedication in the
classroom, and makes everyone around her want to be better,"
and further states “Triston has been a bit of an unsung hero on
the ice because of her position and an outstanding performer in
the classroom, and embodies all the qualities we want in our
student-athletes.”
Her leadership as a student athlete was recently recognized, as
she was the recipient of the 2014-15 University of Regina
Cougar President’s Award. This award is presented to one
student-athlete in their fourth or fifth year of University of
Regina eligibility as chosen by a vote of the University of
Regina coaching staff and select media. It is awarded to the
student-athlete who best exemplifies the combination of
academic and athletic performance during his or her career at the
University of Regina. Further, Triston was presented the CanWest Women’s Hockey Student Academic, Athletic, and
Community Service Award. Triston’s accomplishments were
not just on the playing surface. She is a five-time Academic AllCanadian, and a former recipient of the Team Academic
Excellence Award. Ms Riemer never missed a game during her
CIS career, setting a Canada West record with 132 conference
games played.
During her time at the University of Regina, Triston assisted
with the development of young girls (ages 6–14) as a coach at a
variety of summer hockey camps. In addition, she has been
actively involved in the Cougar Cub Hockey, a program
designed to enable Cougar hockey student athletes to coach
teams in Regina. Triston has performed exceptionally well in
these roles.
Triston has received Hockey University for Initiation
Coaching Certification, CSEP - Certified Personal Trainer, CPR
& First Aid, Canadian Red Cross certification.
Bengough, SK. Katelyn was on the Dean’s List during the
following semesters: 2012 Winter and Fall, 2013 Winter and
Fall, 2014 Winter and Fall. In addition, Katelyn has received the
following scholarships: Rural Student Entrance Scholarship in
Fall 2011 and Winter 2012, the Centennial Merit Scholarship,

Scholarship in the Fall 2013 and 2014. Katelyn has always
approached her education with purpose and dedication, as is
indicative by her academic successes. Katelyn has been
described as “memorable.”
Katelyn completed her fieldwork at the Glenrose
Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton, AB. Her fieldwork
supervisor wrote, “she made a great contribution to an ongoing
project of analyzing gait. Using different biomechanical
approaches, she compared over-round walking to treadmill
walking which will be used to develop an analysis tool for
therapists to use in the treatment of patients with gait issues.
During her time with the team in the motion lab, she absorbed
and put into practice many of the clinical skills and philosophies
that were new to her when she started. It was a great pleasure to
have Katelyn do her fieldwork with me.”
The Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies wishes to

accomplishments and are confident that she will reflect well

Faculty of Nursing/Saskatchewan Polytechnic Deans' Medal
The Faculty of Nursing/Saskatchewan Polytechnic Deans’
medal is awarded at convocation to a graduate of the
Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor in Science Nursing
program receiving a first degree with a minimum average of
80%, who has shown leadership in and commitment to extracurricular activities while a student in the program. The
Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing
(SCBScN) program is very pleased to present the Deans’ medal
to Pei Ying (Jackie) Kiew-Gaco.
Jackie Kiew-Gaco is graduating from the SCBScN program in
Saskatoon with a CGPA of 81%. As a mature student, she
quickly stood out as a leader among her SCBScN peers and was
nominated by her classmates to sit on the executive of the
Saskatoon Nursing Student Society (SNSS) in the role of
Academic Vice President. During her two-year term, Jackie was
an effective leader who gave a voice to students in Saskatoon
and helped them navigate through the growing pains of a new
program at an off-campus site. As an executive member of the
SNSS she effectively represented the students, the SCBScN
program and the University of Regina in various capacities.
Through involvement in program policy changes, student
recruitment and retention initiatives, and student driven social
functions, she has proven to be an engaged learner and valuable
student advocate.
While managing the very heavy workload of a nursing student,
Jackie continued to remain active in the community with her
volunteerism in both athletics and the arts. She is passionate
about her community and helping the children within it. Jackie
has been described as a “tireless volunteer” and has dedicated
her time to community activities such as coaching soccer,
teaching cultural dance and helping with local events. She
believes in positive role modeling, which is evidenced through
University Prize in Kinesiology and Health Studies
The Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies is pleased to
name Katelyn Kaufman as the recipient of the University Prize
in Kinesiology and Health Studies. This prize is awarded to the
most distinguished student of the graduating class in our Faculty
at each convocation ceremony. Ms Kaufman’s program of study
was in the Human Kinetics and Adapted Movement Science
area of concentration within the Bachelor of Kinesiology
program; her graduating average was 88.7%, earning her the
designation of Great Distinction.
Katelyn’s academic career at the University of Regina began
in September 2011, as a graduate of Bengough School,

instead of curse.” After finishing high school in Oettingen, she
packed her suitcase and travelled to Saskatchewan, volunteering
with youth and taking advantage of short-term work permits.
After obtaining her permanent resident status, she started taking
classes towards her BSW at the Parkland Regional College in
Yorkton to be better equipped for work in the helping
professions. Her first job in the field was as a home visitor with
KidsFirst. Only years later would she realize that the skills and
mindset modelled by her team of supervisors and co-workers
were examples of exemplary social work skills, whereby they
lived out anti-oppressive and client-centered practice. Barbara’s
education was set aside for several years as her family increased
by one, then two, beautiful girls.
In the midst of a personal crisis as her marriage fell apart and
she found herself in Prince Albert, away from family and
friends, Barbara returned to pursue her BSW once more. Being a
single mother of a newborn and a 2-year-old, she experienced
what it was like to be on the receiving end of services and help.
Until then, Barbara’s life had been fairly smooth and
comfortable; now she learned to reach out for help and obtained
a much deeper understanding of loss, stigma and financial
hardship. She also learned about the kindness of strangers who
often became friends and part of her own healing journey.
Barbara feels deeply honoured and blessed to be the recipient
of this year’s University Prize in Social Work. One of the
greatest gifts of completing her degree was the many wonderful
and passionate instructors and fellow social work students she
met and learned from along the way. Barbara knows that the
learning that has come from these relationships will stay with
her throughout her life. Many thanks also go out to Barbara’s
loyal friends and family who have been a tremendous support
for her over the years. Through it all, Barbara acknowledges her
strongest asset has proven to be her faith in God. Barbara says
“He has been my rock and my provider and I am so thankful for
the strength he has given me.”

Jackie has successfully balanced her family life and
community involvement with her nursing studies. Her selfmotivated and goal-oriented philosophy has helped her to deal
with the pressures and high expectations that are placed on
students in the nursing program. She has been praised as being a
“well-prepared, confident student with the ability to motivate
and guide her peers”. She has been able to translate the theory
and knowledge she has gained into the clinical setting. She
demonstrates her value and belief in positive role modeling not
only in her community but also in her education and clinical
practice. She has been able to connect and develop mentoring
relationships and provide positive role modeling for the
disadvantaged youth she worked with in her fourth year
community placement at an inner city high school in Saskatoon.

Saskatchewan Registered Nurses' Association Gold Medal
for Excellence in Clinical Practice
The Saskatchewan Registered Nurses’ Association Gold
Medal for Excellence in Clinical Practice is awarded at each
convocation to a graduate of the Saskatchewan Collaborative
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (SCBScN) program who
demonstrates excellence in clinical practice through the
attainment of the highest combined average in four required
300-level clinical courses. With a clinical average of 90.3%,
Chandra Lisitza is the recipient of this award for the 2015
Spring Convocation.
Chandra Lisitza is graduating, with Great Distinction, from the
SCBScN program in Regina. Chandra completed the program
in three and half years through the fast track option; her high
level of performance was consistent throughout this time.
Chandra achieved a TGPA over 90% in nearly every semester
and is graduating from the SCBScN program with the highest
PGPA of any nursing student thus far. She has been on the
Dean’s List numerous times and has also received multiple
scholarships recognizing her achievements. Chandra has been
described as a thoughtful, professional and engaged learner
whose maturity, life experiences and passion for nursing
education make her an ideal student and an asset to the nursing
profession.

University Prize in Social Work
The University Prize in Social Work is awarded to the most
distinguished Social Work student achieving the highest grade
point average among students graduating with a first degree in
the Faculty of Social Work. The recipient this spring is Barbara
Pelletier.
Barbara grew up in Bavaria, Germany, as the oldest of four
sisters. She has fond memories of building forts in the woods
and exploring the hills and valleys for hours. She remembers
starting to learn about colonialism and its effects on North
American Aboriginal people in elementary school, and a certain
feeling of responsibility never left her since. She recalls, “the
awareness that Europeans like me went overseas for their own
benefit and along the way caused so much damage birthed a
desire in me to bring something positive, to bring blessing

Award
The ISM Canada Computer Science & Technology Project
Award was established through ISM Canada. Providing an
annual award to students who have excelled in their courses will
inspire and motivate them to reach higher, achieve more and
realize academic success. This project award will offer an
opportunity for ISM to view presentations of projects when
completed, further enhancing the relationship between ISM and
computer science students. Engaging with organizations such as
ISM will also provide students with an industry perspective.

The Douglas and Margaret Cuddington Scholarship in the
Faculty of Science was established through a donation by
Douglas and Margaret Cuddington to assist full time students
pursuing a degree in the Faculty of Science.
Jack Partridge Music Scholarship
The Jack Partridge Music Scholarship was established
through a donation by John A. Davies to assist students who are
pursuing a degree in the Faculty of Fine Arts. Jack Partridge was
an influential and devoted musician and educator in Regina, the
province, and throughout the country.
Dr. Allan Smith Chemistry Scholarship
The Dr. Allan Smith Chemistry Scholarship was established
through donations by Dr. Diane Secoy Smith, to reflect her
husband’s analytical work in the field of chemistry. The
scholarship will support students pursuing a Bachelor of Science
degree with a major in Chemistry at the University of Regina.
John Griffiths Memorial Entrance Scholarship
The John Griffiths Memorial Entrance Scholarship was
established through donations in memory of Dr John Griffiths to
assist students who are pursuing a Bachelor of Music or
Bachelor of Music Education program in the Faculty of Fine
Arts.
John Griffiths was an internationally acclaimed tuba artist
who was a faculty member in the Department of Music for many
decades. He also served as the Director of the Conservatory of
Performing Arts from 1986 to 2001. John played in the Regina
Symphony Orchestra for 22 years.
G. Murray and Edna Forbes Foundation Scholarship in
Music Performance
The G. Murray and Edna Forbes Foundation Scholarship in
Music Performance was established through the donation by the
G. Murray and Edna Forbes Foundation to assist students who
are pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in Music
Performance in the Faculty of Fine Arts. The scholarship was
created to honour the late Edna Forbes’ interest in music and
literature, areas that were very dear to her.

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
ACADEMIC COSTUME
The academic dress worn by the graduates and the members of
the platform procession consists of a gown, a hood or stole
(worn over the shoulders), and a hat or mortarboard. All
universities have distinctive academic dress for each degree
offered, and sometimes for the disciplines in which the degree is
awarded. This fact explains the variety of academic dress worn
by members of the platform procession, who have graduated
from many different institutions or represent particular groups.
The University of Regina Senate By-laws and the Convocation
Procedures dictate the academic dress for Convocation.
Honorary degree recipients wear a scarlet wool gown trimmed
with gold silk around the collar and down the front. The
honorary degree hood, which is presented to the honorary degree
recipient at the ceremony, has a shell of scarlet wool lined with
gold silk with an inverted green silk chevron and colors
distinctive to the degree. The University awards four honorary
degrees: Doctor of Laws honoris causa (LLD) – red with gold
lining and a green chevron in the lining; Doctor of Letters
honoris causa (DLitt) – red with gold lining and white and green
chevrons in the lining; Doctor of Science honoris causa (DSc) –
red with gold lining and mint green, emerald green and green
chevrons in the lining; and Doctor of Fine Arts honoris causa
(DFA) – red with gold lining and white, pink and green
chevrons in the lining.
With the exception of students graduating with a PhD and
students graduating from the federated colleges, graduates wear
black gowns. PhD graduates’ gowns are scarlet with royal blue
around the collar, down the front and around the sleeves.
Students graduating from the University of Regina registered
through a federated college wear the colour of gown approved
for the federated college. Campion College graduates’ gowns
are red, Luther College’s are royal blue, and the First Nations
University of Canada’s are sky blue. Serving members of the
Canadian armed forces may wear their dress uniform without an
academic gown but must wear a hood corresponding to the
degree they are receiving.

however, the.University permits members of the platform
procession to hood graduating members of their immediate
family. Hooding in this case is performed on stage left, just
prior to the student being greeted by their Dean.
Honours and High Honours degrees are programs in which
students take a more intensive concentration in their major area.
Degrees awarded with distinction show a high standard of
achievement in degree work, based on a graduating PGPA
(Program Grade Point Average) of 80% to 84.99%. The highest
standard is great distinction, reserved for those graduating with a
PGPA of 85% or more. The University also has a number of
institutional honours such as Co-operative Education (º),
Mention bilingue (+), International (♦),
Internship (●), each of which is noted in the program.
HONORARY DEGREES REGISTER
On June 6, 2004, at a Special Convocation ceremony held to
confer an honorary degree on Her Royal Highness The Princess
Royal, the University of Regina commenced with the tradition
of having the honorary degree recipients sign an Honorary
Degrees Register. This book, a dark green leather with a gold
embossed University of Regina Crest and gold embossed
lettering, was designed by Ms Brenda Righetti, Senior Executive
Assistant to the President, and Ms Bev Liski, Convocation Coordinator, and hand crafted by Mr. Jack Perkins of J.L. Perkins
Bookbinder Ltd.
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE OF
THE UNIVERSITY
The University of Regina operates under the terms of an Act
of the Legislature of the Province of Saskatchewan, The
University of Regina Act.
Convocation is composed of the Chancellor, the Senate, all
graduates of the University of Saskatchewan at Regina, all
graduates of the University of Regina and such other classes of
persons as the Senate may from time to time determine.
Graduates of the University of Saskatchewan, as defined by the
University Act 1968, may become members of Convocation of
the University of Regina by notifying the Secretary in writing of
their desire to do so. Apart from extraordinary meetings that
may be called, Convocation normally meets twice annually, in
June and October.
The Chancellor is elected by the members of Senate, holds
office for three years, presides over Convocation, confers
degrees and is ex officio Chair of the Senate and a member of
the Board of Governors.
Senate, because of its broad public representation, has been
described as the university’s “window on the world.” Its general
area of concern is the academic welfare of the institution and,
within this area, it has a variety of duties and powers. Most of
CEREMONIAL FURNITURE
The three ceremonial chairs were a gift to the University of
Regina from Dr. Terence R. McKague, Chancellor Emeritus,
whose term as chancellor ran from 1989-95. The chairs were

the broader issues of academic policy within the university are
reserved for its approval. In another role, it acts as an ultimate
court in academic affairs. The membership of Senate includes
persons, ex officio, by virtue of their offices. Convocation elects
another fourteen members of Convocation to the Senate.
Students registered in the university elect six students of the
university to Senate. In addition, any professional society, group
or organization in the province that, in the opinion of the Senate,
contributes in a significant way to the social, economic and
cultural welfare of the province may be represented on Senate.
The Board of Governors consists of eleven members and is
responsible for overseeing the administrative and business
affairs of the university. Within the structure of the university, it
has ultimate authority in all matters related to the raising and
spending of university funds, and the acquisition and
management of university property.
Council is the senior legislative body on academic matters.
Its membership comprises a number of administrative officers,
all Deans and directors of academic programs, all members of
the teaching staff except sessional lecturers, and a number of
student representatives. All matters of substance related to the
academic affairs of the university must be considered and
approved by the Council. It also possesses broad powers in
matters of academic discipline. Increasingly, it has come to play
a vital role in matters such as physical planning and budgeting.
The Executive of the University of Regina Council has
been empowered by Council to act on its behalf in all matters
with the provision that requesting a special meeting of Council
may challenge a decision of the Executive. Membership of the
Executive of Council provides for the selection of membership
in such a way as to reflect, largely on a proportional basis, the
academic composition of this university.
Disciplines that are related to one another in the broader areas
of teaching are, for purposes of administrative and academic
planning, brought together into Faculties, of which there are
currently ten. Each Faculty is headed by a Dean and formal
membership includes the Dean and the teaching members of the
various associated disciplines. The Deans are recognized by The
University of Regina Act as being the chief executive officers of
the faculties and are directly responsible to the President,
through the Provost and Vice-President (Academic). Each
Faculty, subject to the statutes of the Senate and the University
of Regina Council, has charge of all matters of scholarship in its
disciplines and programs.

As graduates of the University of Regina, students belong to a
family of more than 65,000 alumni. Membership in the
University of Regina Alumni Association is automatic upon
graduation from the University of Regina or if written
permission has been granted by the Alumni Board.
The Alumni Association, a non-profit charitable organization,
was formed in 1974 and is governed by a volunteer board of
directors. The association promotes the accomplishments and
supports the future development of the University of Regina, its
students and alumni. This is reflected in the Alumni
Association's vision statement: “We are the leading proponent of
our University and our alumni throughout the world.”
Through fundraising and partnerships, the Alumni Association
has established a number of scholarships and also supports
campus activities, academic accomplishments, and student
development.
Annually, the Alumni Association hosts a gala event, the
Alumni Crowning Achievement Awards, which honours Alumni
in the following categories: Lifetime Achievement, Young
Alumni, Professional Achievement, Humanitarian and
Community Service, and Outstanding (volunteer) Service.
Nominations of these awards are processed through the Alumni
Relations office.
The office of Alumni Relations is located in the External
Relations Department and works in partnership with the
Association on joint initiatives which further the positive
reputation of the University of Regina, its alumni, students,
faculty, and staff.
The Alumni board of directors schedules meetings bi-monthly,
and holds its Annual General Meeting in June. Any alumnus or
alumna interested in becoming a board member should contact
Alumni Relations at uralumni@uregina.ca.

Dr. Gordon Huang — Award for Excellence in Research
The Alumni Association Award
for Excellence in Research focuses
on the impact of the candidate’s
research in his/her discipline, as
well as on the public good.
Faculty of Engineering professor
and Tier I Canada Research Chair
Gordon Huang is known for his
ground-breaking work in energy,
environment and climate systems
modelling. These areas of focus
have attracted extensive national
and international attention, and the
Canadian government uses his
models to shape environmental policies that affect us all.
Huang has been a Tier I Canada Research Chair since 2003,
and is executive director of the Institute for Energy,
Environment and Sustainable Communities at the University of
Regina and president of the International Society for
Environmental Information Sciences. He has written over 700
peer-reviewed international journal papers, supervised more
than 100 graduate students, and received over 150 research
grants and contracts. His research has resulted in seven Natural
Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada
Strategic Grants in addition to more than ten other NSERC
grants. Huang’s research is, to say the least, far-reaching and
prolific.
Huang’s research has been instrumental locally in
Saskatchewan, and his range of expertise and interest in
applying his research to find real-world solutions are noted by
experts in academic and non-academic sectors. One of those
experts notes that he is “greatly impressed with [Huang’s]
desire to find a way to give back to his home province.” He has
formed partnerships in industry with major national and
provincial companies, and his pioneering research has led to
innovative solutions to complex problems.
The impact of Huang’s research is evident not only locally
and nationally, but also internationally. Huang is deeply
respected in the academic community internationally, and his
efforts to develop a strong research relationship both within and
outside of his field have benefited the University as a whole.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE
Since 1990, the University of Regina and the University of
Regina Alumni Association have collaborated to celebrate the
achievements of accomplished faculty in the areas of teaching,
research and service as part of an annual awards program. Last
year, the program was expanded to include the category of
graduate research mentorship.
The following four faculty members have been selected as
this year’s recipients of University of Regina Alumni
Association Excellence Awards.
Dr. Thomas Hadjistavropoulos — Award for Excellence in
Graduate Research Mentorship
Thomas Hadjistavropoulos is
known among fellow faculty and
graduate students as a strong leader
both in research and in the lives of
his students.
Over 100 students have benefited
from Hadjistavropoulos’ research
grants, receiving funding that helped
to support their studies.In addition,
his students have had opportunities
to publish peer-reviewed articles,
chapters and abstracts together with
their academic mentor. Such
publications have been essential to
these students’ academic success by helping them to establish a
publication track record and pursue exciting avenues of research.
As a graduate student supervisor, Hadjistavropoulos has
brought his academic curiosity, research expertise and
leadership experience fully to bear to the benefit of his students.
The quality of his supervision has been described by many
former students as encouraging, dedicated, collaborative, and
“unmatched.” His colleagues are quick to note that the 28
master’s and doctoral students he has supervised have gone on
to great achievements of their own, fuelled in large part by the
guidance and opportunities they received under his supervision.
Hadjistavropoulos has been recognized for his leadership,
vision, and work with students on numerous occasions. In 2006,
the University of Saskatchewan awarded him the Alumni
Mentorship Award for distinguished contributions to the
mentorship of graduate students. His expertise in his discipline
has been recognized by the Student Section of the Canadian
Psychological Association, which invited him to give a keynote
address on achieving research success.
The Alumni Association Award for Excellence in Graduate
Research Mentorship focuses on the impact of the candidate’s
mentorship on his growth and development as a mentor, the
development and growth of his mentees as future scholars and
researchers, and the contribution of their shared scholarship and
research to the lives of other students and academics who
witness and cite their work.
Dr. Janis Dale — Award for Excellence in Teaching
Described by one colleague as
“IceMaiden, Durt Girl and Teacher
Extraordinaire,” Janis Dale has
been an enthusiastic and committed
professor and mentor in the
Department of Geology since 1993.
Over her 21 years of teaching at
the University of Regina, Dale has
taught 13 different undergraduate
classes, eight different graduate
classes, and a field school, and her
enrolments have ranged from four
to over 270 students per class. Dale
has always taught her own
laboratory sections for her 200- 300- and 400-level classes,
demonstrating a keen understanding that laboratory work is
integral to properly instructing students in the subject matter. As
a member of a small department, Dale has often taught more
than the average number of courses per year in the Faculty of
Science, all the while maintaining an active research program
and sitting on numerous University committees.

Dale’s students consistently note several characteristics that
make Dale an exceptional teacher. Firstly, she knows her subject
matter intimately, and this mastery of knowledge is evident in
the classroom, laboratory and field. Secondly, she emphasizes
experiential learning, demonstrating an understanding that a
strong geoscientist must be able to apply his or her knowledge in
many settings. Finally, she exudes enthusiasm, both for the
subject matter and for her role as an instructor. Students find her
enthusiasm infectious and inspiring, and they know that she
cares deeply about their academic success. Ever prepared to go
the extra mile and help students overcome challenges, Dale is
known to work unusual hours or tackle problems in new ways in
order to help students succeed.
The University of Regina Alumni Association Award for
Teaching Excellence recognizes sustained excellence in
leadership and innovation for undergraduate teaching and
learning at the University of Regina.
