Tour Pack - Liz Rothschild
OUTSIDE THE BOX
A Live Show About Death.
Full Circle Productions and Liz Rothschild
are offering her new “large-hearted” and
“life-affirming” one woman show for
small scale and studio touring 2017.
Liz is a performer, celebrant and award
winning burial ground owner.
Her unique and original new show
combines mercurial tales and miraculous
truths collected over the years from life’s
finishing line.
Outside The Box asks its audience to
embrace mortality and look on the bright
side of life, with a weave of untold and
surprising stories, a hint of history and
some pithy commentary on the funeral
industry (from one who knows!).
Following on from its 2016 festival tour
including Brighton and Edinburgh
fringe, Liz is embarking on a national tour
in 2017, to collect new stories, meet new
audiences and explore the territory
outside the box!

About The Show...
Outside the Box is liz’s first solo show since ‘Breaking The Silence’, about the life of environmentalist Rachel Carson,
which was performed over 100 times to audiences around the country. Breaking the Silence was described as a
“Masterpiece of it’s genre” and shortlisted for the Amnesty Prize at Edinburgh Festival in 2008.
Outside the Box follows Liz’s successful format of solo shows, part theatre, part spoken word; an intimate theatrical
conversation which is “beautifully performed”. Liz’z unique experiences as a celebrant, burial ground owner and
death cafe facilitator are swept together in a show which has been brewing inside her for years. The result is a taboo
busting affair that expertly handles the ‘elephant in the room’ with humour and grace.
“The fact is, I like being with people who know they’re dying. I was never any good at small talk. None is
required.”
As Liz travels the country, the show evolves organically to include new stories shared by its audience, widening the
experience. The post-show element of Outside the Box has been fabulously popular and successful, validating the
cathartic power of the show and its resonance with audiences. Liz has been compelled to start a blog documenting
her experiences on the festival circuit.

About Liz...
Liz trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and also with Dario Fo, Agosto Boal, Monique Pagneaux and actors from the Grotowski
Theatre Laboratory. She has worked extensively in rep and small scale touring before starting to direct and write. She has worked with
large scale community performances, performers with learning and physical disabilities, Theatre in Education and Forum Theatres. She
has run workshops in hospitals, schools and at the Central School of Speech and Drama. She is passionate about making unheard
voices audible and exploring our society’s taboos.
She is also a celebrant and finds working with families to create the right funeral a huge privilege. She has learnt so much from the people
she has met in particular those living with a life limiting illness. The burial ground which is on the Oxfordshire/Wiltshire border
www.woodlandburialwestmill.co.uk provides another way or working with people to create a place they can have a sense of ownership
about and where nature can in its quiet way provide much healing of their grief. It was awarded Cemetery of the year 2015 by The Good
Funeral Awards.
Finally she set up and runs a bi-annual festival in Oxford called the Kicking the Bucket Festival – a festival of living and dying with the
intention of inviting people to experience the fact that talking about death is life enhancing and can actually make them feel lighter and not
more depressed. Using the arts and other approaches to tackle a variety of subjects she has had regular feedback about how inspiring
and reassuring these events are. Witnessing first hand the benefits of this work she decided to reach beyond her local geography by
touring her own one person show about Death. This is her second one person show and it is a form she hugely enjoys including the
chance to talk with the audience afterwards.
