Hoof Beats through Time: historical tidbits about horses and friends…
Lorem Ipsum
Issue | Date
Did you know…. in the mid-sixteenth century, women riding astride
became less acceptable – the idea being that they were too weak, or would
be “damaged”.
Did you know… according to Suetonius, the Roman emperor Caligula’s
horse, Incitatus had a stable of marble, with an ivory manger, purple
blankets and a collar of precious stones. Suetonius wrote also that Caligula
planned to make Incitatus a Consul of the State.
Did you know…the “hipposandal,” a covering made out of leather, like a
modern horse boot was popular in the Roman Empire (Xenophon wrote about it) and the Celts
around the 1st Century CE put metal attached to it.
Making rumors facts: Catherine the Great died of a stroke, not what you might think. Just a nasty
rumor started around the stables for political gain and character defamation. How shocking that
horse people and politicians would spread such falsities!
CONTEST: the first person to get all
answers correct WINS $25.00 gift certificate at
East Valley Feed, plus, having fun in looking
all of them up!
QUESTION: Who rode these horses of history?
1) Bucephalus
7) Figure
2) Trigger
8) Chetak
3) Traveller
9) Aethenoth
4) Jenny Camp
10) Fleeter
5) Comanche
6) Black Bess
Tie breaker: what was their breed (best guess if you
cant find it) and/or color? Take your best shot!

HORSE OF THE MONTH
Lorem Ipsum
“Diamond in the Rough”
Heather & Allie
Allie was a horse advertised on
Craigslist for “cash or trade,”
something that might make you wonder
what’s wrong with them.. I sure did, but
I called anyway and the answer was, “someone bought her and
couldn't afford her board, so dumped her here with the trainer
and left for good.”
UPCOMING EVENTS

Here’s what we have in
the works for
Feb/March:
1) All barn
networking daypotluck. Get to know
So first time driving a trailer (and 3 hours one way), I arrived to
pick up this mystery horse. I have to say she looked nothing like
her picture. She was a longhair, scrawny, neglected, run down
creature. I turned to my girlfriend and said, “she has to be a
diamond in the rough.” I took her home…
what everyone does
here! We have event
planners, florists,
media people, graphic
artists, film production,
accountants, fire
eaters, etc., etc.
That was Dec of 2010, and we bonded pretty quickly. A few
months had gone by and training had been in process. I finally
was stepping up onto her back for the first ride, and she looked
back at me and stood there.
We will be compiling a
comprehensive
booklet of business
cards and categories!
After about six weeks, a friend approached me looking for
several different people to shoot for a commercial. I thought
“why not?”
Exact date/time TBA
Well they came out to the barn with a whole crew to shoot me
riding and take a bunch of pics. Let’s remember Allie is green
broke and they are throwing tarps downs and running boom
mics next to her along with huge sun reflectors, etc. I thought,
“Oh boy, this was a bad idea,” but Allie ran towards the tarps
and cameras with no problem, stood square for the pictures and
never freaked.
Shortly after this, my dog I loved more then life itself became ill. I
received a phone call saying the shoot they did was going
international and financially I was going to be able to pay for my
dogs medical! Unfortunately, my dog didn't have a good outcome
but I would have never been able to do what I needed to do if I
hadn't had Allie. I adore Allie and somehow feel she is my horse I
had growing up.
2) Horsemanship
classes: see pg 2
3) Barn play day
Exact date/time TBA
4) Veterans
commercial airingFebruary
I feel like I rescued her and that she rescued me too.

A horse is the projection of peoples' dreams about themselves - strong, powerful,
beautiful - and it has the capability of giving us escape from our mundane existence. –
