Publishers and heads of houses are encouraged to select the track that is of most interest to them. Sales/Marketing Track But Does It Work? Evaluating and Monitoring the Effectiveness of Your Social Media Marketing Developing a social media presence for your company is only the first step. How do you evaluate the success of your efforts and tailor your online presence to find greater sales revenue, better ROI, stronger media relationships, and frequent return customers? This panel of experienced marketing professionals will share secrets, case studies, and processes to help you develop a system of review for your company’s social media campaigns. Panelists: Brad Farmer, Gibbs Smith; Stephen Koenig, Interweave; Jesse McDougall, Catalyst Web Works Editorial Track Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition In 2003, the 15th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style was met with dismay and disappointment. Users noted there were too many options and too many “acceptable” practices. CMS 16, released simultaneously online and in print last year, is advertised as offering “firmer rules and clearer recommendations.” Join Alice Levine and your colleagues in an exploration and discussion of the new sections and rule changes in the 16th edition. Panelist: Alice Levine, Alice Levine Editorial Services Production/Design Track Optimizing Digital Production Workflows A panel of printers and publishers will provide an overview of the basic elements of efficient digital production workflows—from content management to supply chain optimization. You will hear how some publishers are already using a variety of digital tools to simplify the process of going from unedited Word files to print and e-book output. And you will learn how to use a combination of POD, DSR, and offset printing to align supply with demand and avoid storing too many books (cash!) in a warehouse. The panel will present two case 4 studies—The Autobiography of Mark Twain and The Book of Awakening—to illustrate how publishers can keep up with sudden spikes in demand without building up excessive inventory. Panelists: Kara Mannix, VeloPress; Dave Raymond, Thomson-Shore; Don Schmidt, ABC-CLIO, Joe Upton, Malloy Financial/Administrative Track Improving Your Publishing Company’s Profitability With print book sales declining and the market demanding investment in new book formats, publishers are struggling to balance the costs of their existing print business with a digital future. This session will provide high-level ideas, strategies, and specific tactics to allow publishers to maximize revenues and cash flows in the short-to-intermediate term so that they can fund their transition. Presenters will analyze PubWest Industry Operations and Salary Report and review relevant measures of operational and financial performance to improve your publishing company’s profitability. Panelists: Don Linn, Linn & Co., LLC; Dan Siburg, The Siburg Company 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. Membership and Business Meeting and lunch Voting members are strongly encouraged to attend this brief but critical business meeting to help make important decisions on the association’s future. 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Free time to visit Exhibit Hall – Vendor Poker (Exhibit Hall closes for the day at 3:00 p.m.) 3:00 – 5:30 p.m. Roundtables Colleagues from each of publishing’s primary job functions meet to discuss developments, trends, and lessons learned. Roundtables run concurrently and are led by PubWest members. This year’s moderators are: Editorial: Brenda Hadenfeldt, Brenda Hadenfeldt Freelance Editorial Sales/Marketing: Dave Trendler, VeloPress Production: Joe Upton, Malloy Design: Lisa Liddy, The Printed Page Publishers:* Gibbs Smith, Gibbs Smith Publisher *Attendance at the Publishers Roundtable is limited to publishers/heads of houses only. Panelists: Lloyd Rich, Law Office of Lloyd Rich, Jon Tandler, Esq., Ryley Carlock & Applewhite ♣ Session A2: Making Green While Publishing Green The common notion has been that publishing books with environmentally responsible or recycled materials comes with a higher cost. Today, however, this is largely a misconception. In fact, to be known as a “green publisher” has many profitable advantages and warrants a closer look. This session will explore ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ industry trends between traditional print publishing and digital media, good practices that combine being green with remaining profitable, an update on the latest Book Industry Environmental Council initiatives, and the experiences of two publishers who will discuss how publishing green, both in print and digital media, has affected their businesses. Panelists: Cevin Bryerman, Publishers Weekly; Jesse McDougall, Catalyst Web Works 6 ♥ Session B2: Putting the e in e-Books Publishers are now designing a new reading experience. Why aren’t text-based e-books enough? How can we impact immersion and immersive reading? How can we create a new storytelling method with experiential books? Do readers really want enhanced functions inside their e-books? If so, which kinds of enhancements do they seem to connect with most and which haven’t worked so well? What is the learning and retention value of enhanced features? Panelists will discuss the ongoing process of transforming their publishing companies to embrace the digital future, including enhanced e-books, app development, and online community services. They’ll also discuss using self-assessments, rethinking roles, and changing processes to create flexible and agile organizations.
