5th Sunday of Easter — May 3, 2015
5th Sunday of Easter — May 3, 2015 “Whoever remains in me and I in them, will bear much fruit, because without me, you can do nothing.” 1 John 5: 1-3 14327 Highland, Orland Park, IL —708-349-0903 — www.saintmike.com follow us on Facebook Voice of Saint Michael May 3, 2015 From Your Pastor Rev. Paul C. Burak I am sure many of you have heard the statement: time flies when you are having fun. This weekend, Jesús will be preaching at all the Masses, offering his observations of the parish and giving us his farewell. He will also be preaching the Word. I am just amazed that this semester has come to an end. It seems like just yesterday that Jesús moved into our rectory and began to meet all of you on the weekend and the staff members during the week. Jesús has thrown himself into all varieties of ministry here at St. Mike parish, and has been very well received. He has entered the heart of many, challenged us to a deeper faith walk, and tried to show us what holiness looks like. When Jesús first came, he asked us to pray for all priests that they will be holy priests. This is his theme, and it has been an honor to have him living in our rectory. Jesús, thank you for sharing your life with us. It has been a delight to get to know you, to serve with you, and to see this parish through your eyes. From what I see through you, Saint Mike is alive and well. We are not perfect and certainly not without sin. But we are a community of faith trying our best to serve the Lord. Thank you for being part of our journey. Please know we will keep you in our heart as you continue on the road to priesthood. I know now why time flies – it has been fun to have you part of us. PLEASE KNOW YOU ARE ALWAYS WELCOME HERE – YOU ARE ALWAYS WELCOME HOME. -Fr. Paul 2 Voice of Saint Michael May 3, 2015 Taking the Sunday Scriptures Home In today’s gospel we hear the story of the vine and branches. God the Father is the vinegrower, Jesus is the true vine and we are the branches that grow on the nourishment we receive from the vine. If you are a gardener, you know that just being a branch on a vine does not ensure that the branch will bear fruit. Sometimes, even though the vine is healthy, there may be a branch or two that breaks in a storm, withers and dies. Or, there may be branches that are attacked by outside forces like insects or fungus. They become diseased and must use all their energy to fight off the intruder, leaving little energy to produce fruit. Sometimes a gardener will apply a topical remedy to get rid of insects or the fungus. Sometimes a systemic remedy is needed to root out the problem from the inside of the plant. If the vine is healthy, the branches can sometimes be saved by aggressive treatment of the problem. If the branch remains on the healthy vine, it can bounce back and flourish, producing fruit. If the branch separates from the vine completely (such as the case with a branch that breaks off) it withers and dies and no fruit is produced. Jesus is the healthy vine. What is threatening my relationship to him? What storms in my life threaten to sever me from life giving attachment to him? What recent “intruders” in my life have caused me to use my energy in non-productive ways? What unhealthy person or thing is clinging to me and not allowing me to bear fruit? To engage in fruitful service to the vine-grower? How does my service affect the health of the other branches? How does it affect the entire vineyard? Prayer for our Children Receiving First Eucharist next Saturday Loving God, we thank you for the gift of the children of St. Michael Parish, and ask that you send the blessing of your Holy Spirit upon them. May your love be with them, so that their Communion with you and with the Body of Christ, your Church, will teach them to live good lives. May they, and their families, strive each day to become a visible sign of your presence, and may they come often to your table to receive your Precious Body and Blood. Through Christ our Lord. The committee would like to thank everyone in the parish for their past participation. Over the last seven years, Fall Fest has raised a lot of money to support our parish and school. As was reported in the parish’s financial report last year, Fall Fest 2014 br ought in near ly $100,000. That would not be possible without our great team of volunteers and the many visitors who attend throughout Fall Fest weekend. It is truly a community event that is open to all--adults and children alike. Please note that Fall Fest is occurring one week later than usual because Labor Day is late this year and the renovations that will be taking place in the church. Mark your calendars now to save the dates! There, of course, we experience daily sunshine, minimal rainfall, the natural beauty of the area and numerous social activities with old friends and new friends. We found it very interesting and unusual that when we requested participation in some service ministries, frequently the response was, “Sorry, we’re full; we will call you if we need someone.” We found this both good and bad. It was good because so many retirees in Florida fill their retirement years in this way, but bad if you wish to participate and cannot. One day we decided to drive out to Immokalee, home of the migrant workers, and just appear at the Guadalupe Center where the people receive various services. Surely they would have opportunities for us. It is in this town where the migrant workers live in expectation of being chosen to work in the fields picking produce of various kinds on a day by day basis. What a reality check this was! We were shocked to learn that in some cases three families live in one trailer without cooking or bathing facilities. Although many May 3, 2015 receive free breakfast and lunch, and for some, this is the last meal of the day. They used sand, which represented the dust on the moon, and a marble, which represented an asteroid. The students took marbles and dropped them in the sand to see how craters are formed. They each took turns dropping the marble. After they finished, they learned how asteroids formed craters in the moon. Finally, they read a book called Faces of the Moon. This is where they learned what phases of the moon occur throughout our year. It was a great day for playful poetry and learning the 2013 National Blue Ribbon School Blue Ribbon School names and shapes of the moon, and a fantastic way to learn astronomy. — Colleen O’Finn Page Designed By: Nick Ahrens 10 Voice of Saint Michael May 3, 2015 All are cordially invited to participate in the 2015 Saint Michael Golf Classic. Su Hermano en Cristo Jesús Romero Galán Dear friends, The readings from this Fifth Sunday of Easter make a strong appeal for us to give testimony to Christ who is LIVING and ACTIVE in the world. But to reach that goal, the gospel from today tells us, that we must remain UNITED to Christ. St. Paul is an example of what unity with Christ is able to do in the life of a person. He was a Pharisee who dedicated himself to persecuting and killing Christians for simply believing in Jesus, but after his encounter with Christ, his life changed completely. From being a persecutor, he was changed into a defender and proclaimer of the saving sacrifice of Jesus. We are called to this as well: to an encounter with Jesus, just like St. Paul, which allows Jesus to transform our lives through his grace that will help us to love, not only in word, but also in heart and deed. Lastly, three months have already passed since I arrived at this great community of St. Michael. In this time, I have been able to contemplate the constant action of God in this parish through the strong testimony of life, faith, and holiness that exists in you all. With that joy of having encountered Christ among you, I would like to thank you for the great help and kindness that you have shown me during this time. The moment to conclude this stage of my formation on the way to the ministerial priesthood has arrived, and I would like for you to know that it has been a great blessing to be among you here csharing spirit and life. I hope to rely on your prayers for me, and know for sure that I will pray for you. Remember always that if you want holy priests, then you need to make them holy through your prayers. May God bless you!
