Saint Francis of Assisi - Saint Thomas Aquinas Cathedral
Saint Thomas Aquinas 28 September 2014 Cathedral 310 West 2 nd St Re n o NV 8 9 5 0 3 775/ 329-2571 Saint Francis of Assisi Born in 1182 in a small hilltop town in Umbria, Saint Fra n c i s o f A s s i s i i s n ow known throughout the world and revered among us all. In his own day, as Francis’ reputation for holiness and peace spread throughout his native Italy, people called upon him to resolve their disputes and to deliver them from danger and violence. On one such occasion, the people of the small town of Gubbio alerted Francis to the presence of a ferocious wolf in their countryside. All efforts to trap the wolf or drive him away had failed, so they called upon the Saint to intervene. He went out with only the message of the Gospel: no weapon, no sanctions, no threatening bravado. Francis met the wolf and called him to repentance for the chaos and harm that he had caused. The wolf and the towns-people agreed to live in peace; the wolf would refrain from attacks and the townspeople would feed the wolf for the rest of his life. Such pious legends sometimes have a basis in empirical history and I have often wondered whether this popular narrative of Francis exercising miraculous power over the world of animals has at its core a factual account of no lesser spiritual importance. Perhaps the term Wolf of Gubbio signifies an epithet attached to a notorious outlaw of the p e r i o d , wh o b o t h ra i d e d livestock and robbed people as well. Confronted by armed villagers, the Wolf nonetheless prevailed, being either more skillful with weapons or more ruthless in nature. Francis, however, neither confronted him with arms nor threatened him by sanctions. Rather, he challenged the robber in the name of the Lord to reconcile with his victims and so to experience the peace that only Christ can bring. Thus, the legend of the Wolf of Gubbio points to a more enduring feature of Francis’ historical ministry, namely, the reconciliation of sinners and their reintegration into the fabric of social life through the grace of forgiveness. On Saturday, October 4, please join the friars of S a i n t Th o m a s A q u i n a s Cathedral in celebrating the Solemnity of Saint Francis at 5:00 PM here. + Pax et bonum, Fr Francisco Nahoe OFMConv CATHEDRAL HOMESCHOOL CO-OP The Cathedral Homeschoolers group has grown from 35 to 50 over the last five years. There are 15 similar co-ops in Northern NV; however, the Cathedral Homeschool Co-op is the only one distinctively Catholic for K-8. Classes are taught by the mothers on Tuesday and Friday afternoons 12-4:30PM in Righini Hall. This year, the subjects are American History, Latin, Spanish, Anatomy, Health, Writing, and Math. These busy afternoons are especially helpful to families with siblings in different grades and with childcare for ages 0-5. Every meeting begins with the Angelus, a saint of the day, and a discussion of the virtue of the month. The Cathedral's ongoing welcome and support is much appreciated! Please call Eve at 287-3391 for more information. THE RESPECT LIFE COMMISSION CONTEST The representative that has the most people at the rosary procession will win two bus tickets to the Walk for Life West Coast. You may use the tickets yourself, or you may give them to someone else who would like to attend the walk in San Francisco. You choose which bus/parish, and the commission will buy two seats on that bus. So, what do you have to do? It’s simple: 1. Gather up your friends, family members, and fellow parishioners to come to the Mass & Rosary Procession. 2. Before the Rosary Procession begins, count the number of people that came with you. 3. Take a photo of your group. That’s it. We’ll announce the winner after the procession. Bring parish banners if you have them; (If you don’t have a banner, please don’t let that discourage you from attending). Please bring your portable radios. SENIOR MINISTRY NEWS… Thank you, to all who took time from their schedules to have lunch with us on September 16th to hear the informative presentation by Mr. Mike Brimer on Disaster Preparedness. He also offered valuable information on the basic supplies you should have on hand in order to be prepared. A list of these items is available at the thrift shop. A large storage tub filled with a generous amount of the suggested emergency items was raffled off at the end of the program and was won by Maria Slaughter. I would like to clarify that our Lunch and Learn programs are open to all seniors regardless of any affiliation with the Cathedral. Part of our ministry is to help inform seniors of programs, assistance benefits, tools and opportunities to assist them in maintaining a good quality of life. If you have a neighbor or friend who is an older citizen and would find the subject of the month of interest or value, please tell them about the program and that they are welcome. The Lunch and Learns are funded by the Little Thrift Shop so no donation is requested, however, we greatly appreciated it if you would call the Parish Office 775-329-2571 Ext. 100 and let us know that you and/or a guest will be attending. This will help us to arrange for sufficient food. Our next Lunch and Learn will be held on Tuesday, October 21st and our guests will be from the American Red Cross. Their program will focus on home safety for seniors which will coordinate with a month long national media campaign. They will also be offering free home inspections for hazards and make safety suggestions. The potential for assistance in correcting any issues found will be on an individual basis. Please keep in mind that this does not include major issues i.e. widening doors, building ramps, etc. Remember, our program starts at 1:00PM and all seniors are welcome. FROM THE DESK OF DEACON RICHARD ONLINE OFFERTORY For over a year we have had the ability to accept credit card payments and direct payments from your bank. If you wish to use a credit card for your monthly donation, it’s important that you know that your card number will be kept secured in a vault. We will charge your account on the date, and amount you specify. With auto-payment through your bank you can basically do the same. What is nice for you is that you do not have to think about envelopes or having money in your wallet or purse. This is a great help to your Parish in leveling out the monthly income. If you have questions you can contact your bank or speak to Mary Ann or Diane in the Parish Office. PARISHIONERS CORNER DON’T FORGET OUR ADVERTISERS. PARISH PICNIC Last weekend your new Stewardship Committee sponsored a Parish Picnic. There was a good turnout of parishioners and everyone had a good time. This is the first & foremost important part of stewardship, to bring our parish community together. As a parish we can look forward to more of these types of activates so keep reading the bulletin for the next great event. I want to thank the Stewardship Committee & the Knights of Columbus for the work they did to make this picnic a success. Joke After dying in a car crash, three friends go to Heaven for orientation. They were all asked the same question: “When you are in the casket, friends and family are mourning over you, what would you like to hear them say about you?” The first guy immediately responds, “I would like to hear them say that I was one of the greatest doctors of my time and a great man.” The second guy says, “I would like to hear them say that I was a wonderful husband and school teacher who made a huge difference in our children of tomorrow.” The last guy thinks a minute and replies, “I’d like to hear them say…LOOK! HE’S MOVING!”
