It is our distinct privilege and honor to present this year’s Annual Report for the Superior Health Foundation. The Superior Health Foundation, a conversion foundation formed on Sept. 1, 2012 following the sale of the-then Marquette General Hospital (now UP Health System – Marquette) to for-profit Duke LifePoint, has been in existence for three short years. In that time, the Superior Health Foundation has awarded more than $760,000 in health-centered grants to non-profit organizations large and small across this Superior place we call the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The SHF has raised nearly $75,500 at its annual galas, more than $53,000 at its annual golf outings, and nearly $55,000 with Painting the Peninsula Pink to raise money for a breast health fund. All told, SHF has provided more than $950,000 in charitable funding. Mission: To assist with unmet healthcare needs, with health education, and with programs and research on preventing illness and promoting health throughout the Upper Peninsula. Vision: To improve the health of the residents of the Upper Peninsula. Our grant-giving, and more importantly the lives we have enhanced and improved, underscores our mission, which is “To assist with unmet healthcare needs, with health education, and with programs and research on preventing illness and promoting health.” We’re tremendously grateful to the many people across the region who have made the Superior Health Foundation part of their charitable giving. For that, we thank you. This past year has been one of great growth and success. In 2015, we awarded $329,500 in large grants, including more than $220,000 awarded to four Upper Peninsula agencies to improve the mental health wellness of the citizens of the Upper Peninsula. The Superior Health Foundation team and dedicated Board of Directors that represent the entire region take great pride in providing grant funding that is improving the lives of many, providing enhanced education opportunities, and enhancing health-related services. The Upper Peninsula is a special place. We think it’s Superior. Yet, we truly recognize the tremendous needs that exist. One beautiful grant at a time, we are taking the necessary steps to support programs and enhance health initiatives all in the spirit of addressing our vision: “To improve the health of the residents of the Upper Peninsula.” We’re thankful to many, many people in the Upper Peninsula who have philanthropically supported the Superior Health Foundation. We’re humbled by the generous support of partnering organizations which have pooled financial resources to leverage invaluable funding with SHF. Our future is one of hope, steeped in optimism and driven by growth. Clement dedicated herself to a low-carb diet in order to avoid going on medication to treat her condition. The result? She lost 115 pounds and was encouraged by friends and family to start a Facebook support group to help others do the same. Clement received a SHF mini-grant to help launch her local support group for Low Carb Way of Living. The group now has more than 260 online members with more than 60 from the U.P. SHF Team Jim LaJoie, MPA Executive Director Laura Jarvi Accountant & Database/ Grant Coordinator “We are very pleased and thankful to SHF for its support and dedication to helping us all live healthier and happier lives,” Clement said. The group meets monthly, and with the funds received from the mini-grant, has been able to purchase more than 20 nutritional scales, pedometers, office supplies and various books and exercise equipment. A low carb cookbook is also in the works. The group focuses on getting members help with identifying problem carbs and replacing them in our recipes with healthier options. SAIL used its funding to support a dynamic program to address the health and wellness of veterans and family members with disabilities across all U.P. counties. It was a magical night! SUPERIOR HEALTH FOUNDATION Statement of Financial Position December 31, 2015 SHF Grant Applicants by County Alger ASSETS Walk in the Park is held mid-summer in Escanaba, Michigan. The family of Don McInnis started the walk in his memory in 2005, and the family of Sue Anderson later joined with them in organizing this event, with the addition of the ever popular bake sale. Walk in the Park celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2014, and is still going strong, with nearly $58,000 raised to date! The walk serves to raise money for the advancement of brain tumor research; however, the walk is more than just a fundraiser. It’s about raising awareness. It’s a chance for brain tumor patients and their families to connect with others who are fighting the same battle. Funds benefit the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center, for which Superior Health Foundation administers the funding. With the help of our generous sponsors, walkers and donors, we continue to share hope. Mackinac Marquette Menominee SHF partnered with Munising High School on a month-long Pink event to support our Breast Health Fund. This fund provides assistance to women and men all across the Upper Peninsula to help cover the costs of mammograms, breast biopsies and other uncovered expenses associated with breast health. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Munising athletic teams sold pink merchandise at home events and in school, giving supporters the opportunity to purchase items in honor or memory of loved ones who have battled this horrific disease. The signature event for the “31 Days of Pink” was a Pink Party at the Munising-Bark RiverHarris varsity football game on Friday, Oct. 9. The Munising football team wore pink jerseys, which were auctioned off after the game.
