NRHS Activity Report Submission
(Submitted by Don Maxwell, CPH National Director)
Our Chapter continued their record of perfect attendance at NRHS Board meetings in 2009. Four of
our members attended the annual RPCA, four day conference in Dallas, TX where they participated
in educational seminars, and other events sponsored by the Museum of The Modern Railroad. Don
Maxwell, National Director attended the NRHS special winter board meeting in Philadelphia. In February the Chapter held its third Taco party on Super Bowl Sunday.
In March the Chapter celebrated the 26th anniversary of the Tri-State Railroad Show under the direction of Dale Smith. The show is free and is a joint venture of Greenbo Lake State Resort Park in
Greenup, KY. There were an estimated 5,000 people in attendance. Joe Holbrook and Don Sager
from Lexington, KY brought their Southern 4-6-2, 7 ½” gauge steam locomotive and Cli-Shay locomotives which operated on over 100 feet of track. This special operation was a big hit for young and
old. There were nine model layouts representing all scales and vendors of railroadianna.
On April 10-12 the Chapter model railroad club held its 4th annual show at Dunbar, WV. The Chapters National Director attended the Spring Board meeting in Connecticut. In June several Chapter
members led by Chris Lockwood participated in “A Day Out With Thomas” event sponsored by
Whitewater Valley RR in Connersville, IN over two, three day weekends. The members took the
Chapter handcar “The Pappy Jack” to the event and gave 4,420 folks rides covering 47 miles of
pumping, on the 120 foot long portable track.
The Chapter sent lounge car NYC-38 and the Braddock Inn parlor car to Duluth for the National
Convention. Members Ernie Clay and Chris Lockwood accompanied the cars, and our National Director attended the convention.
Several members including past President Walt Cavender, Karol Cavender Brian Cavender, Chris
Lassak, Ray Murdock the 3rd and the 4th, Matt Taylor and Chris Lockwood volunteered with the
West Virginia Operation Lifesaver Camp held at the South Branch Railroad in June. Cav’s Coach
owned by our member Chris Cavender provided transportation at the camp.

Update on Joe Parsons, CPH Member, New
Superintendant of Terminals, Cincinnati, OH
This is a brief background on Joe:
In 2001, I graduated from WV Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, WV with a B.S. in Biology and moved back home to Kenova, WV. In 2002, I began graduate classes at
Marshall University towards a M.B.A. However, before completing the program I was
interviewed by Norfolk Southern and subsequently offered a position as a management trainee in the Transportation Department based in Greenville, SC. In 2003, I
completed my training and began working as a Trainmaster in Columbia, SC. In 2006
I moved to Dayton, OH. In 2008, I was promoted to the Assistant Terminal Superintendent position at the Cincinnati Terminal, later to be promoted to Superintendent of
Terminals, Cincinnati in February 2010.
From WVOL
A 22 year old man ran in front of a Norfolk Southern train around 2:30 am on Tuesday morning, January 26, and was killed when he was struck by the train. This incident occurred at the crossing at German Street in Shepherdstown. This is the second incident in this area in the past eight months and these are the crossings that
the town wants to make a quiet zone.
