Folgate Road
Dear Newsletter,
What Right?
What right have these moron's got, to walk onto other peoples
properties and steal their possessions? On the evening of Saturday
17th March, SIX trucks in the Folgate/Fenside area, had their
Catalytic Converters sawn off and stolen! (For those who don't
know what this is, its part of the exhaust system which contains
platinum, to control the emissions of the vehicle, which every car
has one) and because these trucks don't have to be jacked up to get
to the exhaust, they make for easy access.
Chatterbox Café
I know that 5 of these trucks are used for 'work' purposes. To get
up on a Sunday morning and find this valuable piece of working
vehicle has been vandalized to these owners, is heart breaking!!
We have now, a £750 (total with labour) bill to face!! Yes, we are
insured but now my husband has lost his no claim bonus, through
no fault of his own. With the prospect of his insurance premium
going up sky-high!! and having the truck standing in the
garage/work shop, waiting for all these things to be sorted out, for
the next week or so, is no fun for a hard working man!
Station Road, Heacham

We haven't got a lot but what we do have we have worked very
hard long hours for. Now these morons, who the police have told
us have got stealing these exhausts down to seconds, I ask, do
they do an honest day’s work?? No, of course not! If they are
stealing to put food in their children's tummies or clothes on their
children's backs, I don't think it would be 'quite' so bad but we all
know it's to fuel their drug addiction? their drink addiction? their
cigarette addiction? or to fill THEIR homes with the latest wide
screen TVs? mobile phones? games stations? computers? etc..

If you do own a truck, a 4x4 or any sort of high vehicle, just

Authon du Perche, France
Dear Newsletter,
‘Salut’ from France
Well, one has arrived in "La Belle France" and all is going
fairly near to plan and it is great to be near the family. As yet
there are not enough hours in the day to do all I want, job
hunting (the first job fell through as a Home Carer as several
locals decided to pop their clogs, very inconsiderate!)
However 2 more jobs in the pipe-line, walking with Purdy
(some great local walks despite my original fears),
decorating/DIY, and very importantly playing with my eldest
granddaughter Coralie, never mind sampling plenty of wine or
getting my feet under a gourmet French tablecloth!

You will never guess what though...there was me saying that
this area is not touristy and that you would probably drive
through this area to get to "nice" parts of the country, well I lied!
Within a couple of days of moving into my own house (2 weeks
ago at time of writing this) I popped into the little café next door
looking for two brawny "Percheron" men to hike my washing
machine up to the first floor and inevitably got into conversation
with the owner. After his making sure I would give English
lessons to his children he asked if I knew about the origins of
the TV programme "'Allo 'Allo". Of course I replied that no,
apart from being based in deepest darkest France, that is all I
knew about it....well..... the road I live on, Avenue Jean Moulin
is named after a chap who was "hot" in "La Resistance" and
better still, the character of Renee was not only based on him,
but the café NEXT DOOR TO ME is the original café that the
whole programme was based on and the room where the mother-in-law lived has pretty much stayed as was! So...if tourists
visit the site where Emmerdale or Corrie are filmed, why not
visit Authon du Perche to see that very café!!!

So shall I now await the arrival of the Heacham contingent?
There is also a very nice little camp-site with hook-ups for
caravans beside a delightful little lake overlooked by a very
impressive privately owned chateau just outside the village.

have just got hold of a list of the local "Clubs" to see what I

Dear Newsletter,

Residents Paintings
For the last 12 months the residents have been taking painting
lessons from professional artist Chris Creasy. This has been an
exciting project for the residents. As a result some of their work
will be on show at an exhibition to be held in The Coalshed
Gallery in Hunstanton on Saturday 28th April from 10.00am.
Several weeks ago I met with Sue Richardson and Steve Percy
from ‘Heacham In Bloom’. They kindly offered to help us
design and build a butterfly and bee garden. It has been a
priority of ours to develop the outdoor area so we jumped at the
chance. Sue has visited since and has been helping Eco Club
plan the area and prepare the grounds. We arranged to have a
working party on a Saturday at the school to complete the work.
The paintings will be for sale with any proceeds going to the
residents entertainment fund.
We met at the school at 9am on the 10th March and I was
overwhelmed by the number of volunteers from ‘Heacham In
Bloom’ that turned out to help. Car after car arrived armed with
spades, gardening gloves and even a chainsaw. In no time the
planting bed was built, the pots recomposted, the tyres painted,
the shrubs moved and the old sandpit demolished.
The residents are very proud of their work and will be there on
the day. Please come along and support them.

Activities Co-Ordinator
They are an incredible and kind group of local people that have
worked to help and improve the area for the children in their
community. I cannot thank them enough for what they have
done for our school. Thanks again to all the people from
‘Heacham In Bloom’ for giving up their spare time, Ridgeons
for donating some materials, Ryan for the art work, Nicky
Cawthorne for bringing his digger and to Matt and Mel for
digging.

The Heacham & Criteuil-la-Magdeleine
Twinning Association
News from the Bushel and Strike
In February the Heacham & Criteuil-la-Magdeleine Twinning
Association (H&CLMTA) bade farewell to its Secretary, Roz
Gauthier, at a party in the Old Friends Hall. Roz had decided to
move to France to be near her family, and she will be very much
missed at the H&CLMTA.
The Pudding Club
On behalf of Association members, Chairman John Stares
wished Roz good luck and happiness in her new life, and
presented her with an inscribed crystal vase.
Our thanks to Sarah Askew for judging the puddings on show.
A wonderful evening for all friends present.
We had a wonderful turnout at the March Pudding evening and
a large amount of assorted puddings produced – all most mouth
watering.
Next Pudding Evening is on Tuesday 10th April at 20.00 hours.
As usual, our big thanks to Tolly for all his hard work in
organising these evenings.

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN HEACHAM
Easter greetings from the manse,
Have you ever mused that if everything shrunk and got
smaller you wouldn’t notice any change. Equally if everything uniformly got bigger, again you wouldn’t notice that
anything stood out as bigger or smaller. Nothing would in
fact have changed, or at the very least you would not have
noticed any change. Well I’ve got to tell you that I have
noticed some disturbing changes in my favourite breakfast
cereals. They have definitely got smaller! Once upon a
time I was satisfied with two s******* w**** but now
it’s three and I find I need another w******* to release
the same amount of energy! People certainly noticed
when last autumn a well-known chocolate manufacturer
admitted that it had reduced the number of chocs in the
tins and boxes of their much loved products. This morning
the news reported that the UK Border Agency is to be
broken up. I can well remember the then Home Secretary
Dr. John Reid announcing the creation of this service
describing the Home Office Department it replaced in a
phrase that really caught on, saying it wasn’t “fit for
purpose.” The news today was suggesting that no change
could be noticed in the work of its replacement.

Folks may well ask what noticeable difference Easter
makes to the world. I often say to people who are looking
for change, that the experience of those first disciples and
believers has something to tell us. After Jesus was taken
from them and crucified and even after some of them had
met and experienced the risen Jesus, the buses still didn’t
run on time and you still couldn’t find a plumber or
electrician when you wanted one! Outwardly the world
was very much the same and yet nothing was the same
because of their faith, their Easter faith that Jesus who was
dead was alive and that he had through selfless and unconditional love conquered the power of sin and death. Put
another way, this new Easter faith in the risen Jesus had
changed them good and proper so that nothing was the
same and everything had changed. They were different
people who saw life and others differently even if the
buses didn’t run on time!
UNITED WORSHIP FOR HOLY WEEK
Heacham’s two churches, St. Mary’s and the Methodist
Church, will be holding united worship in Holy Week. On
Maundy Thursday 5th April we will share in a Communion
Service at 7pm at St. Mary’s. On Good Friday we shall
hold our Walk of Witness, starting at St. Mary’s at 10am,
walking via the Church Hall in Heacham High Street,
down to the Methodist Church in Station Road, arriving at
10.30am for a united service conducted by Rev’d Kim
Nally. This will be followed with tea and Hot Cross Buns.
We welcome all who wish to join the Walk. If you are
unable to walk the full distance please join at the half way
point, which is St. Mary’s Church Hall in the High Street,
where we shall pause for prayer before continuing. If you
are unable to do the Walk at all you are welcome to go
straight to the Methodist Church in time for the united
service at 10.30am.
Perhaps this could be a kind of way of seeing the Easter
faith in the risen Jesus at work in his followers. Have they
changed and do they communicate and demonstrate this
change in loving and peaceful action and service for God
and neighbour and not in a change that brings self-centred
superiority and an ugly judgementalism. This can often be
the change that happens, the change that stands out and
the difference people notice. As His people we need to be
fit for purpose.
Easter Day, Sunday 8th April
Celebrate the Risen Saviour on Easter Day at the Methodist Church 10.30am service conducted by Helen Martin, or
at St. Mary’s at 10am Easter Morning Worship with Rev’d
Steve Davies. Everyone is very welcome to join us for
either service.
With every Easter blessing to you and yours,

Do you have any Lego sitting in a cupboard unused? If so our
children would love to have it to use on days that they cannot

Similarly, if you have any outfits which your own children have

These items can be dropped off at Heacham Junior School at

Heacham (01485 570030) or Amanda on 07585 387959.
Other events arranged for this year are our ‘Open Bowls
Tournament’ at Old Hunstanton Social Club on Sunday July
29th. Information on how to book a Triples Team will be in the
May edition of this Newsletter. This is a very enjoyable day for
both players and spectators with a mini beer festival in the club
(together with a full bar), and a Bar B Q running all day and an
indoor Carpet Bowls Competition later in the year.
By the time you read this we will have held our ‘Race Night’ in Old
Hunstanton Social Club so our focus now is on the Queens Diamond
Jubilee celebrations on Monday June 4th. We will be there on the
Green in our Gazebo organising a ‘Balloon Race’ for all to enter.
Simply buy a helium filled balloon, give us your details and let the
balloon do the rest. There’s a prize for the balloon that’s reported to
have gone the furthest and it’s quite amazing how far some travel.
Of course it does depend on the weather on the day and we can’t
control that. Oh ! don’t worry – the balloons are eco-friendly. There
will be lots of other things happening on the Green all day and we
expect it to be a great day for locals and visitors alike.
Our very successful Car Boot Sales will be held on various
Sundays during the summer but unfortunately we do not know
the dates yet. They will be in the next edition.
Finally. if you haven’t yet brought your ‘200 Club’ tickets
you’ll have to be quick as they are nearly all sold. Contact Peter
Sutton on 01485 570030 to join. Remember there are prizes of
£100.00, £50.00, and two at £25.00 to win every month, so well
worth it. The cost to join is only £15.00.
The other major event we are organising is an outdoor
production of ‘Private Lives’ by Noel Coward. This we are
doing in conjunction with Glebe School in their lovely grounds.
Performed by ‘Heartbreak Productions’, the foremost outdoor
We hope you all have a great summer in this year of the Jubilee
and Olympics. It will be a summer to remember.

We welcome eight new players to this production, with
one of those being 17 year old GEORGE FISHER, playing
the part of Bert. Mary Poppins finds herself being a
supercalifragilisticexpialidocious nanny, to Jane and
Michael. Michael is being played by another new
member, 12 year old JACK PARR. The Pocahontas
Players has a starting age of 12 and didn't have a small girl
at the time of auditioning. 10 year old ABBIE MARSHALL was invited to audition for the part of Jane, which
she passed with flying colours. The chimney sweeps
dancing on the roof tops sees new member, 12 year old
ANIAS HUBBARD, and also popping up from one of the
chimney pots, 12 year old JOSEPH RUMENS.
Pocahontas Players Rehearsal Update
As promised in last month’s News letter, here is an update on how
our rehearsals are going. We are very lucky to have Jaime Tooley
teaching the dance routines for both Mary Poppins and Lion King.
She has kindly given up her valuable spare time to teach, not just on
our normal Tuesday rehearsal evenings but Monday evenings as well.
We all know that Mary Poppins’s friend Bert, is a chimney
sweep, so lots of ‘Chim Chim Cheree’ and ‘Step-in-time’ dance
routines have been learnt (see photo).
The Lion King section is coming along very well, with again
new members taking good parts - with 14 year old RYAN
CHILVERS, with his first time on stage, making an excellent
job of one of the loud laughing Hyenas. The lionesses dance
routines, see energetic new members 12 year old SIAN
PLAYFORD and 26 year old DELLA O'DONNELL.
With the new members, this makes our group up to about 30
members. Extra animal heads are being made, as we speak, by
Dave, Jaime and Janice. We have in this production of Lion
King an added Baboon! Hippo! Rhino! Snake! Wildebeest! and
3 Tropical birds! Its going to be Amazing!!!!!
Another piece of very good news is that we are delighted to
have received a grant, which has enabled the group to replace
the old back drops. These will give the audience a wider and
taller vision. There will be 5 new back drops in operation for
each performance, making each a super fast scenery change,
doing away with the all too many 'front-of-curtain' scenes.
Although we have got these new members and original cast, we
are in need of 'back stage' helpers. If you have Tuesday evenings
free and the weekend leading up to, and our show dates free,
please pop along to Heacham Public Hall - Prompt? Curtain
puller? Sound and Light helpers? Scenery and props helpers?
Back drop painting? We would really appreciate it, or phone
Heacham 570402.
(Another) NIGHT at the THEATRE with extracts from MARY
POPPINS and LION KING, is on Friday 25th May 7.30pm,
Saturday 26th May 7.30pm. All tickets £7.00 EXCEPT
Saturday Matinee 26th May 2.00pm, all children 8 years and
under are £5.00.
For tickets please phone Janice 01485 570402, or Jimma 01485

Thank you.

Archery with the “King’s Lynn
Field Archers”
BED & BREAKFAST
The common perception of archery is that of a
bowmen, standing in a line and aiming arrows
at big circular targets, from various distances, in
a flat well mown field. Either that or bearded
men in tights, rescuing fair maidens and performing acts of “daring do” to a hearty rendition of Greensleeves.
Well there is another type of archery termed “Field Archery”,
which is based upon the traditional skills used by bowmen hunting
in forests and woods, and it just so happens that there is a newly
formed Field Archery club based in north west Norfolk.
Jean & Chris
“Bramley” 38 Church Lane,
Heacham
Prices between £20 & £25 per person
All the basic skills and equipment of archery are used, however the
targets are full sized, 3 dimensional representations of animals,
which are targeted from various distances, within woodlands and
over undulating terrain. The sport appeals to all ages and genders
while catering for all archery abilities. It offers serious stimulation
for those with a competitive streak or those who enjoy spending
their time at a traditional sport in a quiet peaceful woodland

A variety of bows are used from traditional longbows to
complicated and deadly accurate Compound bows. Crossbows,
American Flat Bows (AFB), Recurve Bows and just about every
other type of bow that will send an arrow on its way are used. In
the hands of a skilled archer it is amazing to see the degree
accuracy that can be achieved from nothing more than a big stick
and a piece of string. The NFAS website gives full details of all
these types of bows and the rules governing their use.

1st Heacham Cubs
By the time this is printed I will have finished my first full term
as Akela at 1st Heacham Cubs and all in all I think it has gone
really well. Bit scary at times and I have had to get used to
doing the planning and accounts but it all seems to have gone
fairly smoothly. With the help of John my helper we have even
booked a camp in May at Wolferton - another bit to learn, all the
forms, programmes and costings but I am getting there. I would
like to say Thank You to all the people who have helped me
with this first term, either with words of encouragement or
practical help. Plus a big Thank You to all the Cubs who keep
the pack active and interesting with their own personalities.
The first half of the term we had a pirate themed evening to raise
money for the RNLI and some of the Cubs took part in the
RSPB big bird watch. For the Chinese New Year we made
Dragon puppets and made pancakes. During this term we also
worked through the Road Safety Badge and all the Cubs who
finished all the stages received their badges at the end of term.
After half term we started on our Communicator Badges and
had an evening learning about Morse Code and Baloo (John)
made them all a morse code machine with a light and they all
tapped out various messages . This badge has a lot of stages so
we are doing a bit each week and to stop anyone getting bored
we have started on the Scientist badge and have made balloons
rise using hot air. Plus the usual Cub stuff mainly how to read
a compass as we are hoping to go on a walk round the village in
the lighter evenings by just using compass readings.
Our main project, when we meet again after Easter, is we are
hoping to make a garden so that the Cubs can get their hands
dirty looking after a garden. Weeding, growing some plants (not
sure what yet) and watering them. We hope this will be fun and
they will enjoy watching things grow after they have looked
after them. Again it is part of a badge (Global Conservation)
which has to be done as group.
P.G.PLUMBING
& BUILDING
With this in mind Heacham Cubs are asking for any donations
of (old) gardening tools. On our wish list are :4 x hand forks
4 x trowels
2 x garden spades
2 x garden forks
2 x hoes
2 x rakes
2 x watering cans
24 Hour Emergency Service
Plumbing - Heating - Tiling
Bathroom Installations
If anyone has any of these spare, taking up room in their shed,
we would be very happy to take them off your hands. They can
be dropped off at the Scout Hut on Sunnyside, Heacham on
Thursdays before Cubs (6.30pm) or give me a ring (Sam) on
01485 572138. Many Thanks. Yours in Scouting,

SING FOR WELLBEING
A new 12-week term with Snettisham Community Choir begins
on 18th April at Snettisham Village Memorial Hall from 10am –
12noon to encourage health and wellbeing as well as creative
fulfilment. Running on Wednesday mornings, the group will be
working towards performing together at Dersingham Parish
Church on 14th July with Fakenham and Snettisham community choirs in a joint concert.
Thursday 26th April – 7.30pm
At Sing For Well-Being everyone sings together in a group for
pure enjoyment and the course is accessible to all abilities even
if you think you can’t sing. It is an excellent way to meet new
people and to become part of a caring community group.
The West Norfolk members group invite you to
an illustrated talk by
Robert Ferguson of Real Africa
East African Wildlife
“I am passionate about the effect of harmony and what is
possible when a group comes together to sing, even when the
participants are unsure of their voices” said Carol O’Neill, a
natural voice practitioner and qualified counsellor who has been
running community singing groups for 17 years.
Venue: Methodist Church Hall, Austin Street, Hunstanton
Cost: £1.50 memers/£2 visitors
IDENTITY
“The course is for all age groups and is designed for the absolute
beginner. It includes exercises and games to help people get the
most out of their voices,” continued Carol whose heart lies in
the aural tradition of teaching that relies on the self rather than
the intellect. Sheet music, therefore, is rarely used as everything
is taught by ear.
CHRISTIAN YOUTH GROUP
We are a Christian youth group who meet on the third Saturday
each month for music, games and a chat plus the all important
Jaffa Cakes. Then there is the debate on whether a Jaffa Cake
is a cake or biscuit, but they all get eaten before we decide.
Carol’s approach is light-hearted and she strives to facilitate a
fulfilling experience that impacts positively on physical, mental
and spiritual wellbeing.
We meet at Dersingham Church Hall from 10am til 12 noon and
it costs just £1 (to cover the Jaffa Cakes!). If you are aged 10
-14 and fancy coming give me a ring or just turn up. You will
get a warm welcome.

10 YEARS OF THE FOX BREWERY
At the end of this month we are celebrating the 10th anniversary
of the Fox Brewery at the Fox & Hounds. It was established on
1st May 2002 in an old outbuilding beside the pub and was
extended a few years ago to provide more brewing and storage
capacity. The first ale brewed for sale was Heacham Gold which
is still popular today, ten years later.
• Fox Brewery Polo Shirts available • Bottled Fruit Beers available
• Adnams always on Handpull • German Wheat Beers on Draught
• Plus Guests & a variety of Our Own Ales on 8 Handpulls
• Selection of Single Malt Whiskies
We were the first brewery to open after the Chancellor of the
Exchequer introduced progressive beer duty (you can take us
out of Yorkshire but you can’t take the Yorkshire out of us!).
********
Quiz & Raffle Question - Thursday Nights
The first award came in the brewery’s first year when it was
named Imbibe Micro Brewery of the Year 2002. Since then our
ales have won many more awards including Champion
Speciality Beer of East Anglia for Grizzly Beer, Champion
Bottled Beer of East Anglia for Nelson’s Blood and a Gold
Medal at the Ely Beer festival for Cerberus Stout.

EASTER BEERFEST
6th-9th April
A Great Variety of Different Styles
Of Ales
We are keen to produce local beers from locally sourced
ingredients. To this end we now have our own field of barley
grown at Wells-Next-The-Sea and malted at Crisps at Ryburgh.
We grow hops in our garden which we use to produce an annual
fresh hop beer.
BEERFEST MUSIC: Fri 6th - Hillbilly Cats
Sat 7th - Groove Cartel Sun 8th - Blues by Two
********
We now supply all over the country and have established a
network of breweries that allows us to showcase a wide variety
of superb ales. We always have interesting guest beers on tap as
well as a selection of our own, and since the refitting of the bar
we have eight handpulls to serve them from.
Spice Night Thursday • Steak Night Friday
Seniors Fish & Chips Mon-Fri Lunch £5.25
********
Modern British Food Available Every Day
Booking Advisable
********
As well as supplying our beers to other establishments in the
UK, we have also exported to Los Angeles, Barcelona and
Australia so, by now, a lot more people around the world will
have heard of Heacham! A bit closer to home - we produced
Royal Charter Ale for the 800th anniversary of King’s Lynn.
Smelly Cheese Night - Every Friday:
To join just bring cheese, crackers or pickles.
********
MID MONTH MUSIC:
Tue 17th - Part Time Blues
Tue 24th - Keno Kings
********
Mark really wants to stress how important this area of the
country is in the production of the world’s finest malt. The
complexity of beer rivals any wine with the variety of flavours
and textures. Like wine, different beers complement different
foods as an accompanying drink.
SPECIAL BREWERY 10th
ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND
We also use our beers in some of the dishes served in our
restaurant and for the 10th anniversary celebrations at the end
of this month we will have a special menu using Fox beers in a
variety of dishes so please do come along and try some of them.
27th-29th April
Incorporating the launch of New Beers and
revisiting some Favourites,
Plus an Ale Themed Restaurant Menu
We will also have live music from Friday to Sunday evening
over the anniversary weekend so come along and enjoy good
food, good music and, above all, good ale - there will new brews
as well as some old favourites to try.
Music:
Fri 27th - D.N.A. Busker Night
Sat 28th - Mark Wilkinson Trio
Sun 29th - Acoustic Evening with D.N.A.
- an evening not to be missed!
Finally, our thanks to all the staff, past and present, who have
helped us achieve this 10th anniversary milestone.

BLOOM
March has been very busy, the majority of our bedding plants
have been ordered. The first weeding of the year has taken place
and a huge step towards the creation of a butterfly garden at
Heacham Infants and Nursery School. A very big thank you to
all those who came along to the School on 10 March especially
to Nick Cawthorne without whom we would have struggled to
get the work done in a day.
Lots of things are happening in April. This month we launch our
two local initiatives. The first of which is The Best Blooming
Caravan and Caravan Park
Competition 2012.
We have
circulated posters and entry forms
to each caravan park in the village,
but forms are also available on
the Parish Council website
www.heachamparishcouncil.co.uk.
For the winning Caravan Park,
there will be the stunning trophy
and for the winning caravan owners, a meal for two courtesy of
the Fox and Hounds Public House. The second is the Heacham
Pride of Place Campaign where we hope to encourage you to
take a fresh look at where you live, work or play and put into
practise ideas which could improve it. Heacham Newsletter
have again sponsored this Campaign and the first areas or
groups to register will be given a £10.00 voucher to spend at
Moulam and Horn on plants. Ideas can be as simple as troughs
or planting round your street name sign. Heacham in Bloom is
about our community and taking pride in making it lovely, or
should I say lovelier. Last year, Sunnyside who signed up for
Pride of Place were shortlisted by the judges for best
community project. We have organised our usual Spring Coffee
morning on 14 April in the Church Hall, so you can come and
talk to us about our 2012 Pride of Place campaign, Best
Blooming Caravan park competition or how you can help us in
the run up to Judging. Last, but not least we hope you are
enjoying the crocuses, daffodils and primulas.
Our next meeting is 16 April at 7.00pm – Parish Council Office.

MUSIC MARATHON
JOHN HARRIS presents
For the 28th year in succession, the Music & Entertainment
Marathon was a great success on Saturday 17th March, with a
steady flow of visitors throughout the day and evening, and a
wide variety of entertainment from several regular and some
new friends, including singing, poetry, piano, recorder and
saxophone music, dancing, recitations and dramatic readings,
and a short play in French. The Borough Mayor, Councillor
Colin Sampson, and our M.P., Mr. Henry Bellingham (who has
only missed two Marathons over the years) both spoke about
their respective roles, and the audience also heard from
representatives of the three charities due to benefit, viz, Multiple
Sclerosis Research, Campaign Care (The Bob Champion
Cancer Trust) and The British Polio Fellowship. Proceeds from
donations made on the day plus sponsorship already received
amount to well over £500, with more due shortly. I will ask the
Newslettter to announce the final figure next month. Very many
thanks to all who contributed in any way to the success of the
day. Next year’s Marathon is due to take place on Saturday 23
March 2013.

Co-op Gets The Party Started With
Community Funding
For Local Jubilee Celebrations
Bring out your bunting, round up your neighbours and set up
your street party for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the help
of the East of England Co-op.
The Society has opened applications for a scheme to support
local Jubilee celebrations and community street parties, offering
match funding to its members and customers in communities
across the region.
The Supporting Community Jubilee Celebrations scheme will
offer match funding of up to £100, but is only available to 200
applicants, before the Monday April 23 deadline.
Successful street party organisers will receive a special East of
England Co-operative Jubilee Celebration support pack including vouchers and bunting.
Roger Grosvenor, Group General Manager – Trading, said:
“The East of England Co-operative Society is at the heart of
communities across Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, and we want to
help local people celebrate this very special event.
“We also want party organisers to share their photos and videos
with us on our Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channels, so we
can see communities in our region enjoying their Jubilee celebrations.”
All the items you need for a Jubilee Street Party celebration can
be found at your local East of England Co-op stores from paper
plates to bottles of bubbly, as well as a variety of local produce
including cakes and in season strawberries.
For more information, to apply for the funding, and for full
terms and conditions visit www.eastofengland.coop/jubilee or
contact the Member & Community Services Department, East
of England Co-operative Society, Wherstead Park, The Street,
Wherstead, Ipswich, IP9 2BJ.

MCS Beachwatch Big
Weekend 2011 Reveals
Plastic-wrapped Threat To
Beach Cleanliness
Data from last year's Beachwatch surveys, released today,
reveals the good and bad habits of the British public. An 11%
rise in the number of "doggy bags" found on beaches shows dog
owners are poop scooping but leaving the bags with their
contents on the beach rather than binning responsibly. Let’s see
more beach owners provide bins and more dog owners
disposing of scooped poop correctly!

The good news is a 33% drop in the amount of bathroom waste
like cotton bud sticks and condoms on British beaches, a sign
that the public may be taking heed of our strong messaging from
last year, and not dropping the stuff down the loo.
Why is beach cleaning so important?
Some of our best-loved marine wildlife is under threat from the
waste and litter in our seas, with hundreds of species
accidentally eating or becoming entangled in litter. Litter on our
beaches is also hazardous to people so we all have a part to play
in turning the tide on litter.

Well I have to say that the Curry Night at the King William IV
in Sedgeford was tremendous, it had all the boxes ticked. The
food the service and the entertainment, all came up to the
highest of standards. Firstly the Nelson Shanty Men delighted
the assembled company with their dulcet tones and delightful
songs, incidentally two of our volunteer crew members, Tim
and Gavin, are members of the Shanty men. Super show and
well done, and thank you for an excellent after dinner delight.

Next I must mention the front of house service lead by Liz and
Caroline, pleasant smiles and nothing too much trouble, excellent
hospitality, much gratitude girls and again… well done. Incidentally
an excellent House red, Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot wine, was
available to enjoy with the curries.

Mr F was successful in securing the Therapeutic Allotment
Worker post and 4 years later is very happy to help and support
service users to the stage where they gain/or regain their
confidence, increase self esteem and encourage them to get as
much out of life as possible.
West Norfolk MIND’S
Therapeutic Allotment Project
A recovery story:
Mr F went to the Job Centre feeling depressed and anxious as he
did most days. In addition he suffered from OCD. The Job
Centre couldn’t offer him anything in the way of employment but
pointed him in the direction of a job employment worker at West
Norfolk Mind who supported people at their new therapeutic
allotment scheme. They needed gardeners and it’s something he
had previously enjoyed so he decided to get involved.
Although there is no longer a job employment worker at West
Norfolk Mind the allotment is a fantastic project and so many
people benefit from it and not only from the produce! As with
many charities the funding for projects is scarce and the
allotment could be in jeopardy this year if we do not secure
more funds. If anyone belongs to any philanthropic groups or
works for a company who may like to support this project please
contact Zena Penty, Volunteer Co-ordinator 07585 279215.
Mr F said “at that time I was not getting out of bed some days,
nor leaving the house and had lost all my confidence. After my
first day on the allotment, that night my arms and back ached
but instead of spending the night feeling depressed with suicidal
thoughts I realised I had something to look forward to.
Although I was quiet when I was there I felt I had done
something useful, helped some other people and felt healthier
for the exercise and fresh air.”

Mr F was a service user for 4 or 5 months and progressed so
well that he was asked if he would like to become a volunteer.
He told me that this felt like such an achievement which enabled
him to help other people who initially felt as he had a few
months ago.
Several months later two paid positions arose at the allotments
and a West Norfolk staff member asked if he would be
interested in applying. Mr F said “although I loved working at
the allotment without that encouragement I would not have had
the confidence to apply. Suffering from depression sometimes
means it is hard to break the habit of thinking negatively about
your abilities”.

SPICE GARDEN INDIAN RESTAURANT
OPENS IN HEACHAM
Number 14 The High
Street has now become a
family run Indian restaurant named Spice Garden.
Uncle, Mr. Khan and
nephew Abdul Rukshan,
mostly known as Raj,
have been in business 11
years with a restaurant in
Wells-next-the-Sea and a
takeaway in Fakenham.
There were previously
restaurants in Birmingham but they were sold for the move to Norfolk.
Take A Fresh Look
Seeing snowdrops differently makes you think...
I’ve recently moved from the Milton Keynes area to Snettisham in
search of a different lifestyle and the wonderful Norfolk wildlife.
As you might expect, I'm seeing lots of new things and meeting
lots of new people. I didn't expect spring to be so stunning.
There was a pre-opening on the 28th March for family, friends
and supporters and The Heacham Newsletter were also in
attendance. The food was lovely and the staff were extremely
friendly. We had the opportunity before other guests arrived to
obtain the background story which finally lead the family to
Heacham.
Last week I visited the Abbey
Gardens at Walsingham to see
the snowdrops. I expected a
small scale garden and instead
saw drifts of snowdrops set in
a
woodland
landscape
stretching as far as I could see.
This gave me a very different
experience of snowdrops.
Rather than the small clumps I was used to seeing in my garden,
I saw an abundance of flowers that really looked like a drift of
snow. This new way of seeing them has changed my perception
of snowdrops; I’ll never look at them in the same way again.
Sometimes in life we can get stuck in our ways of looking at
things, but if we take a fresh approach, it can really open our
eyes. As a teacher with over 20 years experience I've seen this
many times in my working life.
Simply being helped to look at the same thing from a different
perspective can open up a whole new understanding. By
providing tuition to meet every learner’s needs, I can revisit old
ground in a new meaningful way that will build confidence and
ability.
Further ideas for the future would be a winter Sunday buffet
and a possibility of catering for functions and parties in a
private room. The enthusiasm for this venture was endless. A
great evening was had by all and a toast was made to wish them
well. Spice Garden also do a takeaway service and will deliver,
free of charge within a 5

backstage. What is the saying – out of sight, out of mind – this
should not be. Without them making sure all is working right
backstage, things could fall apart, scenery change, curtains opening
on time, lighting, sound effects, line prompting, quick change of
costumes, front of house, it is so important to have it right.
Everybody who is involved with the Pocahontas Players give up
their time voluntarily. They work together with so much passion
and commitment, it shows in every performance.
“Perfection shines through”
Over the years, Pocahontas Players have gone from an amateur
group to looking a very professional group. Everybody in the group
makes every effort to achieve closeness – the group want it right - it
has paid off in their performances.
The talent within the group is outstanding in all aspects from performers, singing, dancing, comedy, sound, scenery and timing. This
year, more than ever, it is encouraging how many younger people
have joined the group, boys and girls from 11 years going into
teenagers. This is brilliant to see as in most areas when children
reach their teens there is not a lot going for them, but here in Heacham this group has cracked this for the youngsters.
I understand that every youngster that has auditioned has a part in the
next production.
Here in Heacham we have many activities going on - football, table
tennis, tennis, cricket, Scouts, Brownies, Guides, Cubs, Beavers,
dancing, line dancing, bingo, etc. These are mostly individual groups
geared to age but with the Players, it is geared for all ages.
Heacham has a strong thriving community.
Each and everybody involved in the group add more perfection to
their skills. The costumes are never the same, new costumes are
made for each performance. The backdrops and curtains are different. This is all in addition to Tuesday night rehearsals and Monday
night dance practice. This is the area that falls on Dave and Janice
who order the equipment needed, get the best price for the equipment
to create the sets needed for each production, fetch and carry things
needed, working up to making sure everything is right on the night.
I know when Janice asked me for my assistance with ‘The Vintage
Wedding Show’ my life was put on hold for a year. It must have
been the same for all concerned with the Pocahontas Players. You
get to the stage where 24 hours round the clock you have your mind
working up to the final performance, making sure in your own mind
it all goes right on the night.
Each performer ups their game for every performance. I cannot wait
to see what they will pull out of the bag to make the next performance
more spectacular than the last.
Do not be disappointed, reserve your tickets for:‘Another Night at the Theatre’ - 25/26 May 2012.
A great company. May it keep performing for many years to come.

THE HISTORY OF THE POCAHONTAS PLAYERS
Well, where do I start after an afternoon with Dave and Janice Curtis
talking about the Pocahontas Players. The passion and commitment
that they have for this group is outstanding. In fact, everybody who
is connected with the group has the same passion and commitment –
you can also see it in their performances, it shines through. Any of
you who have been to any of the shows will know what I mean. If
you have not been, don’t miss the next performance on Friday
evening 25 May, and both the Matinee and evening performances on
Saturday, 26 May, of “ANOTHER NIGHT AT THE THEATRE”.
You will know what I mean.
The last panto ‘Dame Tanion and the Missing Musketeers’ was as
good as always. The previous performance was ‘A Night at the
Theatre’ (scripted by Jennie Tooley). This show was breathtaking
and brought tears to many people’s eyes. An outstanding performance with a standing ovation at the end of the show. You cannot get
any better than that (unless you win an Oscar of course).
History
This all started in 1993 when Janice and Jennie wanted to get involved in something and did not know what. Jennie suggested
Keep Fit and Janice fancied her hand at Drama. Jennie said okay, we
will give Drama a go, so they joined the Sedgeford Dramatic Society
in 1993 and did two pantos with the Sedgeford Dramatic Society. In
1995, Jane Knight felt that it was time Heacham had its own drama
group so the three of them decided to give it a go and start a drama
group in Heacham. Jane was scriptwriter, Janice made the costumes
with Jennie singing. Jane’s first play for the Heacham group was
‘Parallel Lines’ in August 1995, followed by ‘Panto Nuts’ in January
1996 and ‘Heavenly Wedding', also in 1996.
Dave Curtis and Jim Race joined the players. Jim worked the stage
and Dave, with many talents, turned his hand to scenery, lighting, etc.
From the start of the Pocahontas Players, they have gone from
strength to strength. Sadly, Jane Knight was taken ill and, after about
two years, she died. The way the Pocahontas Players have grown is
a great tribute to Jane with her foresight to start a drama group in
Heacham.
After Jane’s death, Jim Race took over the scriptwriting. He wrote
the next two pantos.
Now Gary Pearce is backstage as well as performing, turning his
hand to being behind the scenes. We do not always see the people

THE POTTING SHED
Gardening is a very calming, non- threatening type of activity. Plants don’t discriminate.
They don’t care if a person is twenty-five or
eighty-five, in a wheelchair or standing.
Joel Flagler, The New York Times
I arrived home eventually after a really good break, to find to my
delight that all the tomato seeds I had sown have germinated. Even
those I bought last year did well, a tribute to Nicky’s seeds from
whom I bought them. I shall look forward to eating the several
different varieties, that’s if they continue to thrive. Sadly though,
the pelargoniums I stored in the greenhouse look rather peaky and
I suspect they will be for the compost heap. (Actually, that’s where
they’ve gone). I have put another batch of Broad bean seeds to soak
and when they are swollen, I will finish off the raised bed. I shall
need another bed full though as they are quite my favourite vegetable. I have at least three varieties but the ones I like best are Red
Epicure. These are now available from Unwins seeds but I tend to
save some from the last year’s crop (if I can avoid eating them).
Before I start waffling about gardening, let me tell you a tale.
Recently I went to visit some very good friends who live near
Harwich in a “suburb” called Dovercourt. They are another Mike
and Jill, believe it or not and a lovely couple who made me royally
welcome. We went to London to look at pictures (they are both
accomplished artists), to Colchester to the castle and museum, and
did quite a lot of walking. Mike has just had a knee replaced and is
unable to walk much but Jill carted me around and gave me useful
exercise. However, on the Thursday, they were both busy so Mike
took me in the car, dumped me off about three miles from Harwich
and left me to find my way back along the sea bank, which was a
straightforward journey. Now, this bank skirts a smallish approximately 10 acre (sorry, 4 hectare) marsh. When I arrived at said
marsh, I decided to keep close to the sea and miss out the bank. I
proceeded along and came to a small creek with about 4” of water
through which I splashed, congratulating myself on my boots,
which let no water in at all. However, about another 100 metres on
I arrived at another creek, which was about 4 metres wide, and, I
guessed, about a metre deep. I also noticed that the tide was beginning to flood. “Aha,” thought stupid, if I go inland a bit, this creek
will get narrower and I will be able to leap across gazelle-like. So I
plodded inland. The creek did not get much narrower and another
creek joined it making yours truly a bit nonplussed as to how to
proceed. I managed to cross the side creek without falling over just - and blundered on, noticing with some trepidation that the
incoming tide was making all these little creeks look more like
small rivers. Eventually, stupid decided that he wasn’t going to get
anywhere so turned back to the beach. The beach was now covered
by pretty wavelets and the 4” deep creek was a two metre wide
river and getting deeper by the minute. I whimpered to myself for
a bit then decided that I had better cross the foaming torrent before
swimming became necessary. I should mention that I was carrying
a camera, binoculars and mobile phone with me. So I stepped
gingerly into the flood. “Goody” I thought, “I will get wet feet but
it’s only about a foot deep.” I took another step and went in up to
my crotch. It was a bit cold and definitely wet. Another step and I
stepped out of the trough and back onto the foot deep bit. Then I
sloshed my way to firm ground and safety, made my way back to
the sea bank and meandered my dripping way back to my friend’s
home. ‘Twas interesting. I should stress that at no time was I in
danger, just a little miffed that I didn’t think about the tide flooding.
As someone who played in North Wootton marshes as a boy and
who has lived with the sea all my life, I should have known better.
Needless to say, I got a fair amount of flak from my friends. They
Things will be getting underway with a vengeance by the time you
read this. April, however, is a good month to sow like crazy as there
is little danger of frost. The only thing we look like being short of
is water.
I was reading the last newsletter this morning. I always turn to my
own stuff first to make sure I haven’t said anything stupid or
miss-spelled vital words. To my surprise and pleasure, there was a
footnote from “the editor” referring to my bitter words about the
state of England’s farm soil. I was pleased to see it because it means
someone actually reads the stuff I do. I have to emphasise here that
my comments did not refer to farming in general, only to those and it may only be a few - farmers who take as much as they can
from the soil without putting anything back. I watch “Countryfile”
every Sunday evening and appreciate that there are loads of farmers
and smallholders out there who are doing all they can to keep our
lovely countryside in good health. It’s a shame that DEFRA and
government seem hell-bent on letting “Agribiz” spoil it. I’d better
shut up now or the men in white coats will be visiting.
To get back to gardening, I have now put in all the broadies and
have sown dwarf beans in pots. I was going to put in my early
potatoes but the shoots are not as they should be. So they can wait
a few more days. The sun is shining, I really need lots of rain - as
do you all - but I had a pre-lunch glass of wine in the garden and it
was very pleasant.
Since that last paragraph, we have had a good day’s rain so instead
of diverting the waste water from the kitchen sink into a large
container from which I can water my crops and flowers, I have,
temporarily, re-connected it to the drain. It’s gone all cold and
windy though so I am inclined to leave the garden be for a while
especially as I am fairly well ahead. I really shouldn’t boast, all
could go very pear shaped yet, like all my newly emerged tomato
plants could get seedling wilt and mice devour the broad beans.
Next month you will know whether all is well or all is woe!
Now here is an idea, put to me by my daughter. Would any of you,
young or old, with small or large plots, rich or poor, like to form a
gardening discussion group. It would be very informal; we could
get together at intervals and swap seeds, plants or even crops but
especially ideas. There would be no particular emphasis on organics, no one would try and dominate the group, we would all swap
ideas, get advice from the others and generally have a sociable sort
of get together. If any one is interested, contact me and I will
arrange the first evening at my home. Eileen has said she would
provide nibbles and I will supply tea, coffee and a glass - or two of wine to lubricate the discussion. I emphasise here that I am no
expert at gardening, just a dabbler who loves it but like many of
you, I have been doing it for a long time and have learned a bit. So,
give it some thought and contact me by phone (01485 570797) or
by E-mail (mike.drew@keme.co.uk). If the response is good ie >5
people, I will set the first meeting up for early May. There will be
no formal structure, no committee or like do-dads, just a group of
30
people swapping ideas and asking questions. If you know next to
nothing about gardening so much the better. There you go, an idea
to mull over.
layers of paper in the bottom all scrunched up. This will occupy
space and then you won’t need so much compost/soil to fill the
container. It will also hold water to help keep the compost moist
and the plants alive. You will need to work out how deep your
soil/compost mix needs to be. For instance, carrots will need about
a foot depth but beetroot only needs about seven to eight inches.
You see, gardening is a highly scientific thing to be doing! Actually, I think that gardening is an art but you do need a bit of science
as well. By that I mean, you need to know what temperature things
need to germinate properly, how much water to give and so on.
You don’t need to be a Brian Cox to be a gardener but you do need
to use common sense. If in doubt there’s always Google.
I’ve decided to give the wisdom of Mr Saunders a miss this month.
I have received the latest copy of the RHS magazine and there is a
very good article about growing in small spaces. I know that I
banged on about this last year but I thought if I pinched information
from the experts, it might help those of you who don’t have too
much space, to make the most of what you do have.
Before we start, just think what you can use as containers. You
don’t need to buy fancy pots, a cardboard box will do just as good
a job especially if you put a bin liner in to keep the moisture at bay.
But you don’t even need to do that. The box should last a few
months and then you can compost it. OK I know they won’t look
very pretty but if you want pretty, give them a coat of unwanted
emulsion paint or glue wallpaper to the outside. You don’t have
wallpaper or paint? I’m sure you can get some if you ask around
your friends. But don’t tell them what it’s for or they will use it
themselves!
So, what can you grow in your container/s? Well just about any veg
you care to name. All the root crops such as carrots, beetroot,
parsnips, turnips etc can be grown. Dwarf beans, courgettes, cucumbers, peppers, aubergines and lettuces, the list is just as good as
you would use to grow in a good sized plot of ground. You are only
limited by the amount of space you have available. Tomatoes? No
problem. There are several varieties such as the Balconi varieties,
Hundreds and Thousands, Tumbling Tom and more. Go for dwarf
plants if possible. The only thing to remember when growing in
containers is to watch the watering and give regular feeds of
something like Tomorite (which can be used for all veg not just
tomatoes). Get yourself a catalogue, they are free, and get on with
it. Thompson and Morgan have lots of veg designed for small
gardens. Many firms sell plants as plugs these days, which means
you can bypass the, sometimes-tricky germination stage.
To fill your containers you can use soil or you can get a bag of
compost from the Tip (that’s assuming you haven’t made your
own) and mix it with soil from the garden. OK you will get weeds
coming up as well but you can easily remove them once you know
what are weeds and what are plants.
Now seeds are expensive but if you happen to be in Lynn, or
Gaywood, try Aldi or Lidl. They often have seeds for sale. If not,
do as I am always preaching and club together with friends and
neighbours. £4 a packet isn’t so bad when shared with four people.
Or you and your friends can all buy different seeds and share them
around.
So, there you are. I haven’t even pinched stuff from the RHS
magazine; it all came out of my tiny mind. Get started now, go on
put the magazine down and sow something today. I’m sure you can
get your boxes from a local shop.
Good luck.

Incinerator Planning
DIAMOND JUBILEE GALA
Norfolk County Council still intends to decide the incinerator
planning application despite their obvious conflict of interest
determining their own project. They also signed a contract
promising to pay compensation if planning permission is not
granted. When the stated deadline passed for planning comments
the flood of objections stopped. However, instead of closing the
planning portal as expected, the Council quietly kept it open for
pledges of support generated by Cory Wheelabrator. They held
one-sided promotions in super markets across Norfolk many more
than 40 miles from Lynn. Their Public Relations team persuaded
those with little or no grasp of the issues to sign their cunningly
crafted support pledges. The County Council will obviously award
themselves planning permission but it will be a weak decision
vulnerable to challenge, which is why they spent time generating
support. Other waste solutions used in Cambridge, Bournemouth,
and many other areas are substantially cheaper and have not been
forced upon unwilling host communities. If incineration were
really the only solution then all Councils would have opted
for it. Several better waste solutions are listed on
www.farmerscampaign.org. A 2009 report on incinerators
commissioned in Germany concluded they were uneconomic and
harmful. This is very similar to an American report published in the
Wall Street Journal after the US love affair with incineration came
to an end in the 1990s.
Full details of this show are given elsewhere in the Newsletter,
and I hope many friends from Heacham and the surrounding
area will be able to attend, as a number of local artistes will be
appearing, together with performers from further afield.
Tickets are on sale at King’s Lynn Corn Exchange and are , I
am informed, already going steadily. I am hoping to arrange
transport back after the show, leaving King’s Lynn at
approximately 10.30pm, for those who would find the journey
home difficult, or otherwise be deterred from attending. If you
would like to avail yourself of this offer, at a probable cost of
£2 per person, please telephone me on 01485 571995, leaving a
message with contact details if necessary.
Following the success of my Silver and Golden Jubilee Galas,
at Loddon and Hunstanton respectively, I am greatly looking
forward to the privilege of presenting this show at the beginning
of the four-day Diamond Jubilee Weekend, which will be quite
unique in our lifetime.

THE ROYAL ANTEDILUVIAN
ORDER OF BUFFALOES
SEYMOUR HOWARD LODGE
NO: 3403 HEACHAM
Heacham Infant and Nursery School
“Together we explore, discover,
achieve and grow”
A busy and somewhat creative spring term is now
behind us and by the time you read this we will be celebrating
Easter and some will be eating far too much chocolate!
The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (RAOB) under the
Grand Lodge of England has been in the community since 1822.
The Heacham lodge has been in existence over ninety years.
With lodges in many villages, towns and cities "the buffs" have
been able to quietly raise money for many community projects
and individuals in need; indeed it sees supporting family and the
community as one of its core values.
We must share with you some of the fun our PTA created in
school for Mothering Sunday. They hosted and paid for some
fun activities for the children to indulge in with their mothers!
The youngest children in the nursery and reception class invited
their mums into school for pampering whilst they developed
their social and creative skills! Mums, and grandmothers too,
were leaving the school with funky new hairdos, painted nails
and big smiles on their faces after an hour of beauty treatment
led by their children.
The Order as a whole is governed by the Grand Lodge which
provides administrative support to all lodges throughout the
world. The RAOB is firmly rooted in the community; it
provides support not only for members who are in need but
throughout the community generally. It places absolutely no
restriction on age so long as you are over eighteen years of age
and it welcomes anyone who can be deemed as community
orientated or wishes so to become.
Our older children were treated to a candle making workshop
where they could choose the colours and fragrances for their
candles that were special for their mums, including a very
popular ‘bubblegum’ scent! We have heard that these activities
were very popular with the mums in our village. We offer a
huge thank you to Nikki Corby, Shirley Tucker, Rachael Sandle
and Sue Richardson for organising and supervising the fun.
It is also important to emphasis what it is not. It is not a secret
society; indeed the rules and ceremonies book is available in
most reference libraries. It meets to support any member in
need; it meets in a spirit of friendship, truthfulness and
philantrophy. Members rejoice in convivial company and
without any political, religious, physical or ethnic restriction.
We have enjoyed much involvement with our local community
this month; something we aspire to do more of and enjoy very
much. We receive much support from the community and are
pleased at the chance to show our appreciation. In particular we
have worked closely with the Heacham in Bloom team who
have been helping us with our Butterfly and Bee garden. This
has led to support and donations from others. We are delighted
to have many local businesses taking such an active interest in
our lovely school – we are receiving 3 tons of soil from Jennings
Caravan site, wildflower mats from Lighthouse Electricians,
£100 for plants from Extra Hands and lavender plants from
Norfolk Lavender. Thank you all so much.
In this modern world the RAOB realises that the espousal of
family and community values coupled with helping those in
need is not only desirable but essential.
To this end the RAOB is always anxious to attract people with
time to put something back into the community; to help those
less fortunate than themselves and, most importantly, to join us
in that spirit of camaraderie and sense of belonging which so
often is missing in these times.
The Heacham lodge meets each Thursday evening at the
Heacham Sports and Social Club. If you are interested in
finding out more please do not hesitate to contact the Secretary:
Michael Ward on 07957 453615.
We would be delighted to show you the work that Heacham In
Bloom have been doing with the children, so please do call us
to make an appointment to come and admire! This will be a
fabulous teaching and learning space in the summer term. The
topic has also been used in the classroom with our children
making three-dimensional butterflies and bees using willow and
tissue. This will be used to decorate the outdoor area in the
Summer Term. We will share photos in the newsletter with you
in the summer term when the planting is complete. Our outdoor
facilities, which our children love so much and respond so well
to, are really taking shape now so please pray for a warm (we
won’t say dry, as we do need rain too) summer term ahead.

Virgin London Marathon Update
Rachel Richardson who lives and works in Heacham, will soon
be running the Virgin London Marathon to help raise funds for
The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House, and has been lucky to
achieve a golden bond place. She will be running on Sunday
22nd April 2012. The hard work doesn’t stop there, Rachel will
also need to raise sponsorship money.
Rachel has this weekend completed the Silverstone half
Marathon to help prepare her for the 26.2 miles ahead of her.
OPEN SEVEN DAYS A WEEK
including bank holidays
Here’s how Rachel got on, on Sunday 11th March.
“I arrived very excited for my official half marathon. Having
covered that mileage before, I was feeling confident for the race.
However, I am not one to normally complain about the sun
shining but today I was very nervous for how warm it felt in the
hours prior to the start but hey ho when the sun shines in Britain
you appreciate it!!! I started well, keeping good pace for my
target of finishing under 2.30 hours but at 8 miles I hit an
expected wall due to the heat, but seeing my husband and son just
around the corner and taking my fix of jelly beans, I dug deep for
the next mile until the next water stop to keep me going for the
remaining 4 miles. The conditions were tough, but the support
from the crowd and encouragement from other runners the end
was near and my legs just found a speed that I was unaware of to
go through the finishing line. With an end time of 2:34.01 I was
pleased, considering the conditions, and am now feeling confident for my bigger task that lies ahead - the VLM next month.”

Awesome ‘80s tribute POUT AT THE DEVIL bring their
totally over the top glam metal show to the Public Hall. These
hard rockin’ and even harder living bunch of degenerates
formed in 1985 on the sunset strip in Los Angeles and were
destined for rock greatness. That was until fate dealt them a
cruel blow.
We have 6 runners taking part this year who are also looking for
sponsorship, Kevin Waddison of Sedgeford, Douglas Pearson
of North Elmham, Sam Barber of Kings Lynn, Jason Howard
and Suzanne Geraghty of Norwich. You can visit their
justgiving pages at www.justgiving.com.
Searching for some seedy bars to raise hell in, a truck carrying
liquid nitrogen, crashed, covering our heroes and freezing them
in time. Luckily some erotic dancers saw the incident and
carried the band to a nearby lap dancing club to thaw out, a
process which has taken 25 years to complete. During their
enforced absence from the rock and metal scene POTD’s
unscrupulous agent sold their songs to a bunch of up and
coming wannabes like Guns and Roses, Def Leppard, Poison,
Whitesnake and Judas Priest.
The Hospice are also registering runners for the famous Grand
East Anglia Run, a 10k run being held on Sunday 6th May.

These outfits went on to fame and fortune while our heroes
gradually thawed out. BUT THEY ARE BACK, complete with
big hair and spandex and still wearing the same clothes as they
did on that fateful day in LA and ready to claim back their
rightful place in the glam metal hierarchy. THE band is really
gaining a reputation on the live gig circuit with a two hour blast
of everything that the glam metal movement was about. They
are totally over the top and thoroughly entertaining as well as
superb musicians. Expect to go home with a big grin on your

enjoyable evening and went home exhausted either due to
participating in the various dances or just watching the efforts
of those who ventured on to the floor. An excellent and varied
buffet was provided by members of the association. The

Would you like to have more confidence?
Heacham Judo Club
I see clients for a variety of different issues but there is undoubtedly a common denominator in confidence. Confidence is
something that everyone recognises as an important thing to
have and yet no one ever seems to teach us how to get it. If I
know one thing to be true it is this: confidence is a skill that you
learn. It is not something that we are born with or without.
Heacham Judo Club got off to a great start this
year, with a trip to Middelharnis in Holland
and the Area grading.
We travelled to Holland on the weekend of the
17/18/19th February. For most of the children and parents
going this was a new experience. After a long day of travelling
we arrived in Middelharnis. The next day we attended the
tournament. The children all fought hard and we came away
with some fantastic results. In the evening they had a swimming
disco. Sunday came all too quickly and the 10 pin bowling got
under way. The competition in fun and friendship between Lau
- the Middelharnis instructor and our own instructor Jeff was on
and for the second time running Jeff won.
There are many different elements to building confidence but
for the purpose of this article we will focus on just two. Let’s
start with the future. Our imagination is an incredibly powerful
tool and yet its energy is almost exclusively channelled into
imagining things going wrong! This has two effects. It makes
us feel bad and lack confidence going into the event and like a
self fulfilling prophecy seems to make us perform badly at the
event. If you are going to buy a house it can be useful to look
at all the possible pitfalls in order to guard against them. This
has less of a place when imagining your future experiences.
Imagine now, an event that is coming up in your future.
Something you would like to perform well or be successful at.
This time imagine going into the event feeling calm and
confident. As you imagine that, notice how much better you are
dealing with the situation. Maybe you imagine a difficult
situation arising but somehow this time you just seem to take it
all in your stride as though it was just part of the plan, you
remain unaffected. As you begin to gain in confidence imagine
how the event will end with the outcome you wanted and notice
how much better you feel as a result. Easier than you thought?
Just because something is effective doesn’t mean it has to be
difficult.
Sunday afternoon we travelled home finally arriving at 11pm. It
was a brilliant weekend and everyone had a great and tiring time.
The results from the tournament were as follows:
Astrid Hubbard
Gold
Joseph Tucker
Silver
Charlie Morgan
Bronze
Shannon Tucker

Georgia Rudd

Courtney Cobb

On the 4th March we held the South Eastern Area grading and
Training day.
We had good results and club has now four more brown belts.
Congratulations to all for passing their exams.
Results were as follows:

It is also important how we view and explain what has already
happened to us. Confident people add permanence to the
successes they experience. “I always seem to do well at job
interviews” or “We never lose to this team.” Their brain
therefore assumes that success will continue. They are also able
to isolate bad experiences as a freak event or a one off. For
example “I played badly today” rather than “I am a bad player.”
People that lack confidence tend to do the opposite. Take care
to add permanence to your successes and isolate bad
experiences.

UNIHOC SESSIONS
To make full use of the old tennis hard court – now referred to
as a MUGA (multi use games area), Heacham Club Charity
through Tennis Club are looking to expand the sports on offer
by introducing a new game to the village – Unihoc.
The game itself is similar to hockey, though played in an
enclosed area using plastic hockey sticks and plastic balls and
the area of the MUGA lends itself perfectly to accommodate
this game.
A qualified coach is being brought in to run the sessions,
initially for the 6-11 age group. This will be extended to older
ages in the future.
We hope to start the sessions sometime after Easter and they
will run on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 – 6:30pm.
All juniors attending the sessions must be members of Heacham
Club Charity and the cost for this is £1 for the year. At the
moment, cost of sessions per head is undecided though we
anticipate it will not be any more than £2 per child per week,
probably less.
We have restrictions on numbers for these sessions so have to
operate on a first come, first served basis.

The Parish Council has been granted a licence to treat
Greylag Goose and Mallard Duck eggs. The licence permits
the Council to treat nests on private property in the village,
but only at the invitation of the property owner.
The Parish Council’s policy of humane management is not a
quick fix, but with Parishioners’ support it will maintain
current numbers and the flock can be maintained at naturally
sustainable balance.
The Parish Council continues to urge residents not to feed the
ducks or geese. This is particularly important to prevent
mother ducks bringing ducklings off the ponds and onto the
roads.

The draw took place on Tuesday 20 March to select the six
bearers of the 1948 Olympic Torch. The Heacham runners will
carry the torch through the village on Saturday 2 June, when it
will stop off at Heacham playing fields as one of the highlights
in a day in celebration of Sports and the Olympics.

The Wash East Coast Management Strategy
A new group has been set up to look at how best to manage the
coast between Hunstanton and Wolverton. The group are
working with consultants appointed by the Environment
Agency. One of the issues being looked is the changes to
Heacham’s coastal geography over the past 70 or 80 years. The
Consultants are keen to talk to local people about the effect of
tides on the beach and sand dunes in Heacham and are
especially interested in old photographs of the area. We are
therefore looking for residents with a firsthand knowledge of
Heacham Beaches from many decades ago and residents who
might have inherited old photos of the area. If you would be
willing to pass on your local knowledge, please get in touch
with the Parish Council Office.
