I for one am looking forward to some great sight seeing in New Brunswick. On another note, it is that time again. The ballots have been sent out and it is time for you to do your thing and get them back to us. Please exercise your right to vote as this is the only way that things get changed. Please answer the survey questions as well. For those of you that look at the website from time to time, you will notice in the members section is the Shepherd Sports magazine. So now you can look at your paper copy, or if you are on the road and your magazine is at home, you can check it out online. This could come in handy if you are out of town and need contact info from the magazine. I have been in contact with the USCA and we have come to an agreement whereby you can, as a GSSCC member, submit your dogs x-rays for SV certification thru the USCA office. Many of us are USCA members anyway, but if you are not, then here is another option. The info sheet on how to do this is now in the document section of our website and in the magazine. I wish everyone V scores in the trial and VA in the show. Get set for a great event and I will see you there. IPO2 is exactly the same as IPO3 except in two areas. 1. IPO2 has a four blind search – IPO3 has six to search 2. IPO2 does not have a re-attack after the long bite. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions regarding the above notice. Good luck with your training. Doug Deacon GSSCC Head Judge 2012 election / Chairperson - Carole Chabot Carole Chabot stated that Hélène Boisclair-Dugré and Patrick Godbout were scrutineers for the region. My primary breed has been the German Shepherd, though I have handled and trained many different working and n0n-working breeds. I have actively competed in Schutzhund since 2003, and to date have trained and trialed more than 22 different dogs in the sport of Schutzhund. The majority of these dogs were raised and trained from puppyhood by me. Some of my most notable dogs were OTCh. Valiant Val von Narnia, SchH3, IPO3 (my first SchH titled dog and a dog from my own breeding kennel), Wichita von Narnia CDX, SchH3, IPO3, TDX (WUSV 2010 – 63rd), and Dix z Perstatskeho Mlyna ZVV1, SchH3, IPO3, TD (WUSV – 2011 – 48th). I have bred working line German Shepherds under the kennel name of Narnia for 25 years and have produced many police service dogs, other service dogs and sport dogs. Oct 3rd to Oct 8th, 2012 the WUSV Championship will be taking place in Steyr, Austria. I have enjoyed the sport of Schutzhund and have met a wide variety of people across Canada that are passionate about their dogs and training. It has been a pleasure to connect and re-connect with these friends and acquaintances at the GSSCC Nationals. Though our sport (as any competitive sport does) has the challenge of strong personalities, I feel I have the ability to work with varying types of personalities. I am non-reactive and I do not take offense easily. Each year the GSSCC sends a team to compete and each year in order for the Team to be as successful as possible there is someone in the background. This person is the Team Captain and for those of you that have experienced the World Championship this position is of great importance to the Team members. There is so much time and effort put into the organization of the Team long before the event starts that it is important to have the right person in this Team Captain position. I really enjoyed the privilege of being part of Team Canada in 2010 and 2011. Experiencing the WUSV was a wonderful, eye opening experience, placing our sport in the context of world level. This is our Olympics, a place where all our training and efforts come together, where there is great loyalty for our country and a chance to advertise where we are from. It was very good to meet other trainers and handlers from around the world, coming to this event to show what their dog is capable of, with the training that they have done with that dog. For the 2012 Championship is with great pleasure that we announce that Ms. Robin Winter applied and has been selected as Canada’s Captain. Ms. Winter has been involved with dog training for most of her life and came to our sport in 2003. In that short period of time she has been one of Canada’s top competitors and has competed at the World Championships representing Canada twice in 2010 and again in 2011. Ms. Winter takes on this task with the luxury of being a competitor the last two years and therefore she will have a good feel for the needs of our Team. It is also a special position to be part of a team of Canadians, to travel together, to have common experiences, and to try to represent Canada well at these competitions. As team captain, I believe that I can make it a smooth trip for all those that make the team and travel. Having been at the WUSV the last two years, I am aware of the responsibilities of Team Captain and am prepared to do the best job I can. I am also aware that the Team Captain can help make the experience less stressful for those competing by being available to them, and getting all the answers and paperwork done. The GSSCC wants to wish Ms. Winter all the best and we will support her and the Team 100%. Good Luck. She is a loving nine year-old Doberman who is active with Schutzhund training. Unfortunately, Ninahʼs back can flare up, preventing her from participating in her favourite sport. Ninah, and her owner Lyn, started doing laser therapy as an adjunctive therapy for her back pain. On days when Ninah comes in for laser therapy, you will find her laying on an orthopedic dog bed in our therapy room, with Lyn petting her head, while updating the staff on how Ninah Ninah taking a break during her training. is doing. Ninah is receiving laser therapy for a chronic sporting injury. There are basically two types of sporting injuries in the dog. These are acute (rapid onset) and chronic (a persistent problem). When treating these injuries, the desired outcome is the same: to return the dog to full function, so they can do what they love. Therapies for acute injuries are often shortterm, whereas those for chronic injury are long-term, often for the life of the dog. It is important to realize that most treatment regimes for both types of injuries often require a multi-modal approach, i.e., a combination of therapies is needed to achieve the desired results. These components can include pharmaceuticals, supplements, physiotherapy, Dr. Woodley during one of Ninahʼs treatments. acupuncture, etc. This article will discuss the use of therapy lasers as part of the therapy regime. All cells in the body respond to light. The type of response is determined by the wavelength of the light and how much energy it deposits in the bodyʼs cells. Therapy lasers use laser light to generate the desired response. There are two types of therapy lasers in use: Class III Lasers, also known as cold lasers or low energy lasers, and Class IV Therapy Lasers, also called high energy lasers. The difference between these two classes of lasers is in how the light penetrates the bodyʼs tissues. With a Class III laser, the light is absorbed by the skin and then the effects on the skin cascade into the deeper tissues. Similarly, with a Class IV Lawrence Woodley D.V.M. E: drlawgils@xplornet.ca laser, some light is absorbed by the skin, but light also penetrates into the deeper tissues, like the muscles and joints. May 2012 Sporting Injuries In Dogs Each therapy session is tailored specifically to the petʼs physique and the injury or condition it has. Darker coloured fur absorbs more light, just like wearing a black t-shirt in sunlight makes you warmer than wearing a white one. The therapy protocol is created by taking into account the petʼs hair colour and weight, in order to adjust the wavelength of the light and how the light pulses, so it can effectively reach the desired tissues. Like Ninah, most serious sporting injuries are deep within muscles, joints and supporting structures, so choosing the right laser for the job is important. If a Class III laser is used, it requires a long exposure time to the laser light. On Ninah, we used a Class IV therapy laser that only required a short exposure. This is advantageous, as we have good tissue penetration and shorter therapy sessions. With chronic injuries, there can be scar tissue that has formed in the affected area, arthritis, swelling and/or pain. The goal of using the therapy laser, in cases like this, is to lessen the effects of these problems, so the body can function more normally. The laser works by increasing blood supply, reducing swelling and increasing the function of the healthy surrounding tissue, to help compensate for the damaged tissue and thus allow the area to function more normally. The therapy laser will also provide some pain control. This type of therapy is ongoing, starting typically with six sessions over three weeks, then moving onto a monthly or bimonthly maintenance session. Sessions can last anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes, depending on the type of injury and areas affected. There are many other uses for a therapy laser, besides treating muscles and joints. Laser light can also increase blood supply, open lymphatics and act directly on the cells to promote healing, growth and increased function. This is especially helpful with acute injuries, where there is swelling, causing a reduced blood supply to the area and pain. By treating at this time, the light can open lymphatics to reduce the swelling and increase the blood supply to the area. This brings much needed nutrients and oxygen to the affected tissues, creating faster healing times and less scar tissue. This prevents an acute injury from becoming a chronic problem. It also causes the body to release endorphins, the bodyʼs own painkillers, making the pet more comfortable. Lastly, it can help stimulate the bodyʼs immune system, helping to rid the body of pathogens (harmful bacteria, viruses etc.). “ACTS DIRECTLY ON THE CELLS TO PROMOTE HEALING, GROWTH, AND INCREASED FUNCTION.” Therefore, when dealing with acute sport injuries, you should act quickly and, in the case of chronic sport injuries, provide continuous therapy. You should always consider a multi-modal approach to providing therapies to your pet and you should include a Class IV therapy laser as part of that multi-modal approach. As an aside, laser light can be used to stimulate acupuncture points as well. By doing this, you will keep your dog happy and doing what he or she loves to do. Just ask Ninah! Lawrence Woodley D.V.M. I have always asked for pick male in lieu of stud fees. Cathy, Thank you for the interview and the time you share with the GSSCC members. I have been fortunate to train some great dogs. I have always been grateful to the people I have met along the way. We all need a good coach, a good helper and the support of family and friends that want us to achieve our goals. I hope you all can help out and share in the success of others. Have fun, stay positive and enjoy the sport. What do you feel is the biggest problem in the breed today? It seems we all know someone who has or had health issues with their dog; allergies, hip, elbow, etc. Some issues can be environmental but some are genetic. Some people choose to breed for personal gain but really they should breed for workability and health. Far too many examples of this to get into but for those looking for a pup you should research more than just the parents. How many litter mates had testicles missing or elbow dysplasia? Do you breed survey your dogs? I did breed survey Bure von Norbreeze and have put show ratings on every dog I intend to title. I believe with the time and energy put into titling a dog it should be complete so as it can be used for breeding. Have you ever owned or titled an alternate breed? German Shepherd dog is the only breed for me! All jokes aside, the alternate breeds are for those interested in their challenge. I admire the GSD. Name your first dog? What year? Titles? In 1994 I got my first dog Bure von Norbreeze SchH3 WUSV competitor. I did as much as I could with Bure – trials, shows, AD, FH, Gold Sports Medal. He was the best dog I have owned. Darryl Haringsma and Alon vom Adler Tal Give a brief description on how you became involved in dogs. My friend Tommy Joyce had a German Shepherd dog all throughout high school. Tom would get his dog out and say ‘stand still’ then ‘revier’ and the dog would do a nice hold and bark that scared the crap out of 16 year old boys that did not realize he had control of the dog. LOL. What are additional dogs you have titled? They were all sons from Bure: ▪ Sunshadow’s Caine, SchH 1 – toughest dog I have experienced ▪ Sunshadow’s I-Edge, BH – funniest dog I have had ▪ Alon vom Adler Tal, SchH3 2xWUSV competitor – Alon & I have an amazing bond. I am now training Alon’s son Epic von Narnia. Tell us how you first became involved in the Schutzhund sport. In 1994 John Lundin asked me when I was going to get a dog. “You have been watching with Tommy long enough.” John phoned Frank Mensing and asked if he had a pup for me. Frank said I could have pick male if I trained at Lower Mainland and that was how I got my first dog Bure. Recall your highest score, which phase, dog, year? 100 points in protection with Bure in 2000 at the Canadian Championships in Trois Riviers, Quebec. Truly a great time in this sport for me. We had teamwork and camaraderie that was special. Have you been on team Canada? I have been fortunate to have been on Team Canada three times. Once with Bure and twice with Alon. Are you a breeder of GSD? If so what is your personal goal? Shepherd Sports – Summer 2012 Year? Score? 16 PROFILE on DARRYL HARINGSMA – by Cathie Pierson Wavre, Belgium 2000 Florence, Kentucky 2008 Krefeld, Germany 2009 What phase do you find the most difficult? I also find obedience the most challenging. The judge can take points for everything. Slow sit, slightly crooked, touching on recall. When any handler can 92-92-96=280 80-86-93=259 83-88-86=257 achieve V scores under several different judges you have made huge accomplishments to be proud of. What was your biggest thrill in the sport? I have had many thrills in this sport. On the escape bite in Kentucky, Alon hit Lotus Perkins the front half helper with a full grip and swung in behind his legs. Thankfully as Lotus was going down he released the sleeve. All those Canadian fans were on their feet cheering as Alon proudly carried the sleeve back to me. That was a crowd pleaser that ended up all over the internet! Receiving the 100 points in protection with Bure was exciting but receiving 96 points in protection at WUSV in Belgium was adrenaline pumping. The crowd applause and celebration was amazing and those moments last a life time. Do you take an active role as a helper? Unfortunately my lower back does not cooperate for helper work. The helpers in our sport need to be acknowledged and appreciated for their fitness and commitment. A gifted helper brings out the best in the dog and relies on the handler to work as a team. Alon’s blind search WUSV 2008 What phase do you most enjoy training in and why? Obedience is dog and handler teamwork. I love working with my dog having eye contact and focus. On cue we move in unison working together. A smooth clean obedience routine is always a pleasure to watch. Any pet peeves? I wish all the judges were on the same page. I believe the sport would benefit from honest, consistent judging. When favoritism comes into scoring and politics take over, people get discouraged. What would you like to see in the future for the sport? I have struggled with how to stop the drama that occurs within the people. What if the executive at every club said ‘No drama’? With positive attitudes people would have fun. When newcomers to the sport see a fun atmosphere they want to get involved. To be successful we all need a support group. We need people working behind the scenes contributing in their own way. What would you like to see in the future for GSSCC? The GSSCC should be growing in a positive direction. My own opinion is that we are losing more members then we are gaining. I have seen a lot of people come and go in the 18 years that I have been involved. We need to lead by example and motivate members to train title and show their dogs. Dozer started protection and there was not much to work with, but Jim and Mike persevered and tried all kinds of things to see what we could get out of him. With the help of other club members handling Dozer, the group effort paid off. Kelly and Dozer are now doing blind searches, hold and barks and escapes. The question always lingered with us, though, how far can they really go? The BH heeling pattern is very long and of course with Kelly having to push himself for each step, which for us is so effortless, proved to be a very difficult and physically challenging task. Thankfully Kelly tried some new wheels on his chair that had little motors built into them with the amount of pressure he has to exert with every push. He still has to physically push his wheels to move, but this aided so much. Kelly and Dozer dove in quickly and set their sights on the next trial to get their BH. Under Judge Frank McEniry Kelly and Dozer, with the assistance of Jim helping to push him from behind in the heeling on leash portion, they were off. Kelly completed the rest of the routine on his own with Dozer with no mistakes. Winnipeg Working Dog Club are so proud and pleased to share with our dog sport friends a success story that helps us all remember the importance of our relationships with our dogs, being able to see success when others can’t and helping people to achieve success no matter the barriers. On May 26th, 2012 Kelly Trauer and his Rottweiler ‘Dozer’ became the first wheelchair handler/dog team to achieve a BH in Canada. When Kelly first came to our club a little over a year ago we all immediately were taken in by his upbeat personality and wonderful outlook, but what were we going to be able to do with them in the sport, if he could even get on the field due to weather conditions. Kelly started his relationships with the Rottweiler breed after he was in a car accident back in 1995 at the age of 23 that left him a paraplegic. His brother brought him a puppy named Zeus that helped ease Kelly into what his life was now to be. In the past he was active in mixed marshal arts as well as other activities that he would no longer be able to do. Zeus and Kelly were together until he died at 12 years old. During that time Kelly was aware that he was not well socialized (the dog) and realized the importance of having a dog exposed to many scenarios. After Zeus passed away Kelly got Dozer within six months and brought him everywhere he went. He tried some personal guard work that was more geared towards Dozer protecting Kelly, which they both enjoyed, but the trainer retired six months later and he knew at that point that he wanted to continue on training Dozer in some fashion. He found a reference to our club and contacted Jim to see if he could come out. The first day he showed up to our field he could barely get to the club house with all the rain, but he did and he even showed up the next training session as well. He watched us all training and decided that he wanted to try the sport with Dozer. Kelly started out slowly with Dozer just trying to get some focus and almost never missed any training sessions, always asking questions and willing to learn. Even during our long, cold winter he made his way out to train Shepherd Sports – Summer 2012 Jim Chrisp helps Kelly with ‘Heel on Leash’ Kelly & Dozer on their own As we all watched the incredible effort that Kelly had to put in to accomplish each exercise, I know each of us had a tear in our eye and such pride for them as they showed us that wonderful importance of the relationship between a man and his dog. We truly are so lucky to have gotten the chance to be a part of their success and can’t wait to see how far this team can go. Kelly’s determination and patience with his buddy Dozer helps to remind us all that handicap is a state of mind and anything is possible if you believe and have a goal. 20 KELLY TRAUER and DOZER – by Jean Fischer SHEPHERD SPORTS FALL DEADLINE SEPTEMBER 1ST, 2012 Your GSSCC Marketing Committee has taken on more work and in preparation for what is yet to come we are looking for a couple of volunteers to sit on this committee. The trophies and medals were awarded under big applause to our winner- Sylvie Stewart and Yanka von den Wolfen. Each competitor received a participation medal with the 2012 Championship Logo as a souvenir. Lots of photos were taken and lots of good memories were formed. Club SchH Rive Sud congratulates all participants and spectators. The 2012 Quebec Regional Championship was truly a success!!!! We also would like to acknowledge and congratulate all club members for the great work and serious efforts and sincere dedication. The 2nd annual Quebec Regional Championship and Sieger Show has officially ended. It's the year's most anticipated event for Schutzhund and German Shepherd lovers, as it features some of the best competitors and dogs from Quebec and Ontario. One thing's for sure, you won't see anything quite like it again in 2012 in Quebec. This year, 13 competitors were in the trial and more than 50 dogs were entered into the Championship. The weather was very hot and humid which tested the dogs’ working and performance abilities under rigorous conditions. The competition featured the well known judge from Germany - Peter Arth. He was tough but fair and everybody earned the points they received. One BH was successfully performed on Saturday. Darcy Vieira and Bella worked their mock routine and impressed Mr. Arth with their performance. On Sunday morning, all 12 IPO competitors were ready to start. We all moved to the tracking field where track layers Guy Dugre and Remo Ducasse were laying tracks under the watchful eye of the judge. Tracking wasn’t easy and many dogs were unable to complete the exercise possibly due to the warm conditions. Isabella and Crash received the high score in tracking and Isabella was praised by the judge for her handling skills. The Sieger show started Sunday afternoon with the Breed Survey. We would like to thank Anthony Hartelaub for the flawless helper work. Followed by the puppy and young dog classes, the judge took his time and described each dog in the ring. Mr. Arth was pleasantly surprised with the quality of dogs shown in the ring as well as the presence of working line dogs. After this very hot day, we were all spoiled by Sigi Klein, our very own chef who received much deserved praise for his tender steak, baked potatoes, salads, beer, more beer, and endless fun. Monday morning brought some strong winds and more stress to IPO competitors. While for some dogs it appeared easy, most dogs struggled in certain areas. The judge remained firm and consistent. After a short break, the judge called for protection to start. Everyone was exited- who doesn’t love protection??? The helper work performed by Francis Charest and Sylvain Charbonneau was steady and uniform. After lunch, the huge show ring was waiting for the last show competitors- open and working classes as well as kennel and progeny groups. As expected, George Zamfirescu (Amalaberg Kennel) took home Regional Sieger and Siegerin trophies . The handler is called out of the blind by the Koermeister and proceeds to the indicated position (middle line). 2. The leash is removed, and the dog is held by the collar. 3. The dog is to remain in this position until he is sent, with the command “voran”, to defend the attack. 4. On direction of the Koermeister, the helper leaves the blind he was sent to by the Koermeister, approximately 70 to 80 paces from the handler, and crosses the field with a normal gait. 5. The handler verbally calls to him stop. 6. The helper ignores the call and frontally attacks the handler and dog. 7. Immediately upon the attack, the Koermeister indicates to defend the attack. 8. The handler immediately sends his dog with “voran”, and remains standing. 9. The dog is to defend the attack with intensity, forcefully, and with a firm, full, confident grip. 10. When the dog has gripped, the helper is to briefly pressure the dog – without stick hits – and on direction of the Koermeister, stop the resistance. 11. Upon this, the dog is to release on his own, or on the command “out” and guard the helper. 12. On direction of the Koermeister, the handler directly approaches his dog in a normal gait and puts him on leash. 13. The handler reports to the Koermeister with his dog on leash and leaves the field. For the evaluation of the protection phase, a cognitively trained Koermeister is used. Helpers for the event will be GSSCC certified helpers. Execution: I. Attack 1. The handler reports to the Koermeister with his dog on leash. 2. On direction of the Koermeister, the dog handler goes into basic heel position at a marked spot approximately 25 meters before the blind, and removes the leash from his dog. 3. The leash is to be draped around, or put in pocket. 4. On direction of the Koermeister, the handler proceeds in the direction of the blind with his dog off leash. 5. The dog is to heel close to the handler up to a marked spot 7 meters before the blind. Repeated verbal commands are permitted; touching the dog is not permitted. When the handler reaches this spot with his dog, on direction of the Koermeister, the helper comes out of the blind threatening and vocal towards the handler and dog. If the dog breaks before the marked spot, no attack on the helper is permitted. The handler now has two additional opportunities to free-heel with his dog to the 7 meter marking. If the dog cannot be free- heeled to the 7 meter marking, protection is stopped due to lacking obedience. In the case, after the documents have been returned to the owner, the dog can be presented for a new survey in the same year. A presentation due to insufficient obedience can only be attempted three times. 6. The dog must immediately, confidently and forcefully defend with a firm, full grip. 7. When the dog has gripped, he receives two hits with the soft stick on hindquarter, sides or withers. 8. During the defence of the attack verbal encouragement by the handler is permitted. 9. On direction of the Koermeister, the helper stops the attack and stands still. 10. The dog is to release on his own, or on the command “out”, and to guard the helper. 11. The handler receives direction from the Koermeister to approach his dog. 12. He puts the leash on his dog and is directed by the Koermeister to step into a specific blind. III. Identification On reporting at completion, a tattoo (i.e. chip number) control is done by the Koermeister or an SV-judge designated by him. IV. Evaluation 1. 1.1 On conclusion of the attack, the dog is to release on his own. 1.3 The handler can give the first verbal command “out” on his own, after an appropriate time period. 1.3 If the dog does not release after the first command, the handler receives direction from the Koermeister for two more possible verbal commands. 1.4 On giving the verbal command “out”, the handler is to remain standing calmly without influencing the dog. 1.5 If the name of the dog is to be used, this will be evaluated as an out-command. II. Defence of Attack with Guarding Shepherd Sports – Summer 2012 Release 24 NEW BREED SURVEY PROTECTION RULES - 2012 1.6 If the dog releases on his own as the handler approaches, this can still be evaluated as an ‘out’. However, the handler must be a minimum of 5 paces away from the dog. 1.7 If the dog releases on his own or on command during the Attack and the Defence, he receives the additional comment “releases”. 1.8 If he does not release – even only in one instance – he receives the comment “does not release”. In this case, the survey cannot be completed. The dog can then be presented again at another survey during the same year, upon the documentation being returned to the owner. Presentation because of ‘no out’ can only be attempted three times in a calendar year. Overall, only three attempts for survey can be made in a calendar year, regardless whether due to lacking obedience or no out. 1.9 During the entire protection phase, the Koermeister remains near the handler and intensively observes the behaviour of dog and handler until the final pick-up. Frank Mensing judged Tracking. We had 13 IPO3 competitors in total due to a number of pulls unfortunately for various circumstances. Big thanks to all who truly made this event a huge success. The support from clubs all over the Region including the Island, the Interior and the Yukon was remarkable. A thank you to our helpers, Ken Trouton & Dan Juros; tracklayers Eki Itkonen, Steve Alexander & Guy Palanuik & tracking coordinator Doug Deacon. Our 'team extreme' kitchen staff, field coordinators Ralph Wilton & Bob Smith, double shifted as our overnight security for Dog Sport Gear. Mo Sutherland & Chris Arduini did our Handler Bags which surpassed the ultimate of goody bags. An extra special thanks to those from outside our own club who pitched in to pull it all together. Also, we couldn't have done it without the financial support of our Trophy Sponsors and Advertisers. Our fundraising efforts for the Region was an incredible success. The Calcutta raised over $2400.00; a set of 6 Portable Blinds donated by Dog Sport Gear collected $790.00, and $350.00 Dog Sport Gear Gift Certificates were auctioned and raised another $290.00. Ralph & Shelley Gilby & Dog Sport Gear's generosity is tremendously appreciated. The GSSCC Organization is very fortunate to have their Sponsorship support. Congratulations to our winners: First time competitor, Greg Robinson received the Sportsmanship Award as voted on by fellow competitors. The Helpers Choice Award and High Protection (93) went to Karen Sinclair and Uta von Grunheide, owned by Shelley Gilby. High Tracking went to Karen Sinclair with Griff v. Temar (95). High Obedience (90) & 3rd Place Champion is Gerhard Rohde & Satoris Darko with 266. Second Place went to Chris Arduini & Hardy de lupus Saevus with 267 and 1st place to Dorwin Anderson with 270 points. We did miss one our friends at the competition: Bernie Hoodless of Whitehorse who could not be with us due to recent surgery - and we send him well wishes for a speedy recovery. Thank you to all our competitors for a job well done. For event photos, visit our official photographer Brian Asmussen http://asmussenphotography.smugmug.com In April, we also had the pleasure of hosting the 2012 Western Region Sieger Show. SV Judge Ernst Siefert evaluated close to 50 dogs, and we want to thank all supporters. Congratulations to the Western Region Siegerin, V-Kalliope v Bullinger, SchH1 owned by Robin Stellars of Bellevue, Idaho and Sieger, Ax Redox SchH3 owned by Heidi Theis of Middleton, Idaho. Happy training to everyone and best of luck to the competitors at the 2012 Nationals. Michelle Larsen 2. Evaluation of Drive, Self Confidence and Ability to withstand pressure 2.1 The overall evaluation of the protection is given as “pronounced”, “present”, or “insufficient”. 2.2 Pronounced: Self confident, intense, determined and secure grip and hold, no negative reactions during stick hits, close and attentive watching during the guarding phases. 2.3 Present: Limitations in self confidence, determination, with grip and stick hits, as well as in the guarding phases. 2.4 Insufficient: Lacking self confidence, strong limitations regarding ability to withstand pressure, and disinterest in helper. We welcomed SV Judge Elmar Mannes to judge our performance phases, and SV/CAN Shepherd Sports – Summer 2012 Continued on page 38 ………… 25 CLUB REPORTS The weather held out for 2 of the 4 days and everyone was very happy with how our first training marathon weekend went. Doug Deacon even held a Points Seminar to help us all understand the points system of judging a trial. It was very informative. And Nicole Wretham made all the meals, of course, and they were delicious! We are now thinking of making this an annual event. Good luck to everyone at the Nationals. We had our first IPO Trial on March 17, 2012 with SV Judge Frank Mensing. The weather was not pleasant and we had a very small entry, but everyone was successful and that was the main thing. Nicole outdid herself with the meals again, and Frank even went for seconds on the dessert! Kathy Alexander After another mild spring, the club was excited about our trial on May 26th with Judge Frank McEniry. The weather turned out perfect. Not too windy or warm. Frank was a very fair and consistent judge. It was good to see you this far west. One step at a time. Congratulations go out to Mike and Zee, and Kelly and Dozer for their BH's. Jean took the time to write a report on Kelly and Dozer. Saying it was a huge accomplishment is an understatement! We can all talk about the Worlds or Nationals, but to see the bond between these two puts everything in our lives in perspective. Congratulations also go out to Jean and Hank for their IPO1, and to Vlasta and Tiber for their IPO1. This was Vlasta’s first IPO trial and to Jim and Enzo for their IPO2. Better luck at the Regionals for Jeff and Ursa and their IPO3. Ursa decided that Saturday wasn't her obedience day! As we keep training up our puppies and young dogs, the focus has been on the Regional dogs and handlers, as everyone was there to help them prepare for June 2nd weekend. A lot of us attended Lower Mainland’s trial on April 21st, where Karen Sinclair and Uta achieved their IPO2. That’s where the photos were taken by Karen’s husband Gord. Shelley, Karen and Kathy at Lower Mainland Gerhard built a very nice deck for our club house this spring. Thanks Gerhard! Great idea Ralph! We decided to have a training marathon at the club on the May long weekend. We trained from Thursday, May 17 to Monday May 21. We had invited a few people from the Island, Thunder Bay and Oregon to join us. Shepherd Sports – Summer 2012 Vlasta and Tiber Jim and Enzo Also, a big congrats goes out to Rita and Iree for their FH2! It takes a lot of training by the team, and a lot of planning by the club and judge to pull one off. The 27 CLUB REPORTS change of terrain turned out to be hay to dirt. After the track was over, Rita disclosed it was the first time her dog tracked on dirt! Way to go guys. Speaking of the Regionals, we hope to see some of our friends in the sport here. I know it's a long drive, but we promise the refreshments will be cold and plentiful! We have a few new members to mention. Glen, Sean and Eve, and Manfred and Baerbell. All are eager to learn, and their dogs are coming along nicely. Speaking of new dogs, Bernie has one picked out. Seeing the bloodlines, we better stock up the first aid kit. Just kidding. It will be good to see them out on the field again. Hopefully we'll see you all at the Regionals or Nationals or both! Best of luck this year. Jim Chrisp Okanagan Working Dog Club The Okanagan Working Dog Club, located on Glenmore Road, between Kelowna and Lake Country, would like to thank everyone who encouraged us to form our new club. We are dedicated to the working dog and having overcome a few bumps along the road to success, our small band of avid dog lovers has the passion to train and compete in the sport. The goal for our club is to help dog lovers throughout the Okanagan, sharing the same interests, to train their dogs to the best of their ability. Currently at twelve members strong, we are working with puppies getting started in socialization, with dogs getting ready for their BH and with dogs training for IPO2 and IPO3. Kathy Schrauwen Cindy and Ria celebrate their IPO1 We would like to welcome all visitors to join us as we look forward to many warm and sunny days at our new training grounds. Shepherd Sports – Summer 2012 28 CLUB REPORTS we’ll be off to Winnipeg for Regionals…whew…I’m tired already and the trial season has only just begun! After shaking off the effects of our regular winter hibernation we’ve actually had a pretty productive spring at the German Shepherd Dog club of Calgary! We officially welcomed Terry McDonald and his young Rottie Roar as our newest members. A bunch of us headed up to Edmonton at the beginning of May to support ASA as they put on their accreditation trial with Raino Fluegge. The club did a great job and it is awesome to have a fourth club in Alberta again! Way to go guys! An additional benefit of the ASA trial was to motivate us to get training so we had dogs to enter both for the club and to see if we were really ready for trial! Our spring trial was coming fast after the fun we had at ASA so it was full on training for the next couple of weeks to help our club members polish up and get ready for Warren Jones. We were so busy training that we maybe didn’t plan quite far enough in advance for the construction projects we wanted to get done before the trial! Never fear though…there are a few dedicated members of this club that don’t shy away from LONG days and LONG nights of hard labor. A big thanks to everyone who lent a hand to get our new Sea-Can extension added on to the clubhouse, a fresh coat of paint on the blinds and jumps and an old a-frame made new again! It was a very ambitious ‘to do’ list but we got it done…and man does the clubhouse ever look good now that we have the extension added! No rest for the wicked as they say…so just as the construction projects were completed we welcomed our judge Warren Jones and his son up from Montana and the trial was underway. We had a good entry of 9 dogs and we drew a great group of spectators from across the province to cheer them on. I must say of all of the trials I’ve attended over the years I don’t think I’ve ever seen as many smiles and laughs as I did during this trial. The competitors really looked like they were having fun out there with their dogs. I’d like to think that is what contributed to the great scores and seeing every dog/handler team successfully achieving their titles! This is how every trial should be! A big thanks goes out to Jason Giso who donned the helper pants and tested the dogs in protection. A great job as usual! Congrats to all of the competitors who put their dogs out there for all to see! I’m frantically typing this club report so I can get it submitted to Diane before we hit the road once again for Edmonton to support the GSDCE’s spring trial and then Shepherd Sports – Summer 2012 Carolyn and Alkemi starting their ‘V’ track. Dan and Bronte on their way to IPO1 Wade and Grissom – what are he and Ron smiling about? Melissa Waters 29 CLUB REPORTS ing them in their training. Good luck to everyone who trials this summer and to those who compete in the Nationals. I hope everyone has a great summer, enjoy the weather and have fun training! Glen Forbes CENTRAL NEW BRUNSWICK SCHUTZHUND CLUB We have had a busy but very productive and rewarding spring. We started it off with a great four day seminar with Hannu Liljigren from Finland on April 19 - 22. His training techniques and his ability to teach the handlers made the seminar very interesting and informative for the participants and spectators. The turnout and support from other clubs was amazing and we would like to thank those members from the East Region, and Isabella from Quebec for participating. Two weeks following the Hannu seminar, club members were able to put their training from the winter and spring to the test. We hosted a small but successful club trial, thanks again to judge Dave Grant for his on going support. We would like to congratulate all the members from our club and from Mirabel Schutzhund Club who obtained a BH or IPO title. Honorable mention goes to Maurice Bernard from Mirabel SchH Club who was high in trial, and to Rebekah Winter (14) and Suzanna Winter (9) who attained BH titles on dogs that they trained solely, great work from our young members! West Coast German Shepherd Schutzhund Club The West Coast club has been busy training all the young dogs (and new handlers!) in the club and hosting two trials in April & May. Both trials were filled with our club members getting 17 new titles on young dogs, and some repeat titles!! It is great to see such full participation. Ultimately getting on the trial field is what we are all aiming at, and what all those hours of dedicated training is focused towards. However, young dogs can be quite nerve-wracking in competition as nothing is secure yet, and without exception everyone who trialled in the last weeks experienced that! Congratulations for the following new BH titles: Hal & Lalo, Teresa & Heike, Ros & Piper, Peter & Gator, Mark & Arek, Jane & Louie, Lance & Haakon, Steve & Cairo! And the following new IPO1: Steve & Cairo, Peter & Russo, Lance & Haakon, Gabi & Finn. And the following new IPO2: Helen & Eiko, Gabi & Finn. Unfortunately Bill & Xya did not make their first shot at IPO2 with Xya deciding on the last bite that she just was not prepared to out…… We also have three new ADs in the club with Teresa & Heike, Mark & Arek and Bill & Xya. Doing those full 20 km at the required speed is definitely an achievement. We all send our very best wishes to Bernie who is currently going through some medical treatments. Bernie is a valued club member and we miss him at our events, with his cheerful attitude, love of the sport, and, of course, his great cooking. We know you will back out there soon. Good luck to everyone in the upcoming Regionals! Most recently a few of our club members went to the East Regionals in PEI. Ellen & Gypsy obtained their IPO3 title, Shana took Bonnie’s dog Zeus after training him for only two weeks before competing for IPO3, and Robin & Bonny also did an IPO3. Tony and Zeppelin attempted their IPO2 - hopefully obedience will go smoother next time for them! They all had great things to say about the hospitality in PEI and our club would like to congratulate the members who titled their dog and everyone who qualified for the Nationals. We have quite a few new members this spring that have joined us with their dogs and look forward to helpShepherd Sports – Summer 2012 Gabi Hoffmann 30 CLUB REPORTS ward to working Deuce in the sport. And club members are looking forward to watching Deuce’s progress. As a club with many novice handlers and young dogs, the YRSC is looking forward to a summer and fall of training and competition. Now that a solid foundation has been laid, the time has come to test ourselves and our dogs under trial conditions. This year’s mild winter and warm, dry spring meant that club members were able to brave the lane into the grounds much earlier than usual (anyone who has ever visited the club knows that this road can be an adventure!), so that we had a jump start on cleaning up and opening the field for outdoor training. What a welcome treat! Another treat for club members will be the three-day tracking and protection seminar the club is hosting in July with Dusan Majtas of Slovakia. A three-time Slovakian IPO champion with three different dogs, Dusan has competed seven times at the world championships and is also a judge with extensive international experience in both Europe and North America. As a trainer, he has coached several handlers and dogs of various breeds to outstanding results in international tracking competitions. To bring Dusan to Ontario, the YRSC is working closely with Club Schutzhund Rive Sud, which has graciously extended its co-operation in planning this event. Right after the YRSC seminar, Dusan will travel to Montreal, where he will conduct a week-long seminar at Rive Sud. Enrolment in the two seminars, for both working participants and spectators, is limited and spots are filling up quickly. For more information on Dusan and on the seminars, check the YRSC and Rive Sud websites. Lisa Frederick and her German Shepherd Dasko were able to take advantage of the great spring weather to put in some intense training in preparation for the Ontario Regional IPO Championship, where the two were to compete in IPO1. By the time this issue of Shepherd Sports is printed and distributed, this competition will be history, but club members were planning to turn out in force to cheer on Lisa and all the competitors. We would also like to thank the Scarborough Select German Shepherd Schutzhund Club for organizing and hosting this year’s event. Earlier this spring, we welcomed Tom Saville and his young German Shepherd, Deuce, to the club. Tom, who is new to Schutzhund, definitely holds the club record for driving farthest to get to training and is looking for- Shepherd Sports – Summer 2012 In preparation for the regionals, Dasko hones his protection chops with club helper Anthony Hartelaub. Dyanne Rivers Hello from the Fundy Schutzhund Club, where things are as busy as Santa’s workshop in December. We are busy trying to make the 2012 Canadian German Shepherd Dog Championships and Sieger Show and event to remember. Almost everything you could want to know about the Nationals will be on the website – everything from upto-date pictures of the tracking fields to what’s on the menu. And while you’re there, enter for your chance to win some cash, your hotel stay free, banquet tickets or high-performance dog food. The draw will be made on July 1. Somehow, amid all the work we’ve been doing for the nationals, a bunch of us managed to get ready for the Eastern Regional Championships in PEI. With 10 entries, the club did quite well. Congrats to Dale Comeau and his dog, Vinnie, who are Regional IPO 1 champions. Way to go, you two. Persistence certainly does pay off. Dale also had the TSN highlight of the weekend with his slick leash work on the final article. After momentarily lying down correctly on the article, Vinnie appeared to decide that he wasn’t finished tracking. In his critique, 31 CLUB REPORTS It was a busy spring for FSC, beginning with a seminar at Central New Brunswick Schutzhund Club with Hannu Liljegren that was well attended by our club members. Then came CNBSC’s spring trial, a working weekend at the PEI Schutzhund Club and finally, the Regionals. the judge commented that Dale, with his huge feet, accidently stepped on the leash as the dog started to get up to continue. Of course, in our exaggerated re-telling of the story, we describe Dale as walking like a tight-rope walker with his hands extended out to his sides, tilting from side to side. What’s a good story without exaggeration? Dale Comeau and Vinnie IPO 1 Regional Champion Now, with all that behind us, it’s full-steam ahead for the Nationals. We hope to see you all here. Mia Clarke Dale on the tightrope! Congratulations to Kip Day who finished in second and fourth place with his dogs, Iron and Achilles, respectively. Without any exaggeration, Iron and Achilles both brought their A games to the Island. Pulling everything together on trial day isn’t always easy with one dog – let alone two. Kip made it look easy. Way to go, Kip. READER’S FORUM In Memoriam Wolfgang Tuchs, SV Judge passed away on the 17th day of May, 2012 after a courageous battle with Cancer. Kip and Iron Cheers also to Terry with Eva, and Shalometh with Enoch for their successful BHs. With success at the IPO 3 level were Darin with Basko, Paulo with Ava, Mia with Bruno, and Terry with Maverick. Unfortunately, Betsy ran into trouble on the track, but I’m sure their time will come. Shepherd Sports – Summer 2012 We have lost a dear friend. He will always be in our hearts and thoughts. Our condolences to his wife, Linke Gerhard & Charlotte Rohde Surrey, BC 32 CLUB REPORTS I missed the last magazine submission so I have a few things to catch up on! In February we had Doug Deacon come to the island to present the new rules. Our club hosted the fun day with open obedience followed by the seminar. I counted at least 32 guests which is a great turn out for an island event. In March we had Ralph Gilby join us for a helper seminar and certification. It was a small event with Aaron and Conor from our club and Lance Couture coming over from Delta. At age 14 Conor is now a certified front half helper! Unfortunately Conor also plays football and suffered a knee injury so is sidelined until he MCL heals up. Conor – no more football – we need you in dogsport! We were scheduled to have an April Fools day trial but turns out the fool was on us! We didn’t have enough entries to continue with the trial so we have postponed with Judge Frank Mensing and will reschedule soon. Our club has many young dogs that aren’t quite ready for trial yet but next year should be busy! Speaking of young dogs….thanks to Christy’s dog Wray we have four new puppies in the club that are tormenting and entertaining us! Susan has the black beauty Gia, I have a little bear named Grizzly and Christy kept two females, Ghost and Gold Nugget. Aaron’s dog Crush and Nick at the seminar Darryl Haringsma Our first trial of the year was a huge success. Congratulations to Lique (High IPO1), Ray (High IPO2), Emma (BH) and to April (High tracking, obedience, protection IPO3) and High in Trial. Way to go Team Capital! Congrats also to Angus from Scarborough club for your high BH. Congrats to all those who were successful and better luck next time to those who had bad luck. The weather sure cooperated and it was a great weekend. Thank you to Jim Chrisp for the excellent judging as well as Alison for the secretary work and preparation, without you it could not have happened. As well, thanks to all club members for their hard work and dedication. Now the members prepare for the up and coming regional championships and hopefully on to the nationals. Everyone has been working hard getting our grounds in order, lots of work to do and it is coming along great. It could not be done with out John Marhan who goes above and beyond. As Howie and I prepare for our move to BC we try to prepare the club to continue in the spirit of our founding members. We reflect on the day’s that we formed this club along with our friend Teresa. The first member was Hans Kratz who passed away a few years back. After that came so many friendships, a lot of success, and a lot of blood sweat and tears. We are confident that we leave the club in good hands. There are so many experienced members and a ton of enthusiasm for the sport. We have no doubt that they will continue to be a huge asset to the Schutzhund sport and great supporters of the GSSCC. It feels like we are sending our kids off to college and it Susan has the black beauty Gia, I have a little bear named Grizzly and Christy kept two females, Ghost and Gold Nugget. ◄ Baby Grizzly Bear Over the long weekend in May we hosted a seminar with Nick Vannerom from Belgium. Thanks so much to those who came out and supported this event. Nick has a true gift of bringing out the best in both dog and handler at all levels of the sport. He is observant and quick to analyze behaviours and transform the work in a positive direction. All our club dogs showed improvement after the three days with Nick. Shepherd Sports – Summer 2012 33 CLUB REPORTS sure is hard trying to let them make their own decisions. We know they can do it, we wish them all the success in the sport and in their lives! It takes a brave helper to take on Heather's supersized GSD, Fenstadt! We appreciated Henry for traveling as far as he did to lend his support in our success. Thanks, Henry The Alberta Schutzhund Association is officially an accredited member of the GSSCC! We had a fantastic start to the prairie region trial season with the success of our May 5th accreditation trial. It wasn't easy by any means to prepare for such an important event so early in the season, but our members were up for the challenge. Our hard working members deserve credit for keeping each other on track and organized, especially during the last few hectic weeks. Although the scores and titles of the day are not official, there was much to be proud of for all the trial entrants. In addition to contributing many hours of labour in getting the ASA grounds into trial-worthy shape, some members entered their dogs as well, adding to their work load. But by event day our equipment was ready and shipshape thanks to the construction skills of Wes and fellow member Dave Keller, as well as Susan Lawrence of the GSDCE for lending us her jump. Thank you, Susan. The club house and grounds were tidied up and decorated to represent our Cinco de Mayo trial day theme and member Leanne Hurl put together a delicious menu so no one had to worry about where and what to eat. Thanks to the ladies of the club, there was no shortage of good food and beverages! The effort that went into preparation alone shows the importance of teamwork in our sport and our effort was rewarded by a wonderful spectator turnout and the heartfelt support of neighbouring IPO clubs. We were glad to see members of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Edmonton in attendance, and greatly appreciated the participation in the trial by members of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Calgary and Chinook Schutzhund Club of Alberta. The sight of a diverse array of IPO club uniforms mingling around the trial field was a sign that although we compete against each other, we also stand by each other in the success of the sport. Fen And respectfully, we must express our gratitude towards SV Judge Raino Fluegge for presiding over the event as judge and also for taking the time to present us with a full day seminar on Sunday following the trial. It was a great opportunity for everyone to take note of areas that need a bit more work under his experienced eye. There is no doubt that being able to learn from Mr. Fluegge will also help improve scores this trial season for everyone that was able to attend the seminar. Raino and Igor The ASA is growing and the acceptance of our club by the GSSCC will certainly help us to extend a positive image of IPO sport in Alberta. We look forward to a fun summer training together, welcoming new members and new dogs into our club, and much success to everyone! An awesome group!
