Be intent on things above rather than things of earth. After all, you have died! Your life is hidden now with Christ in God. hen Christ our life appears, then you shall appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3: 1-4) Join us for Holy Week & Easter Liturgies 2CNO5WPFC[#RTKN 8KIKN/CUU 5CVWTFC[#RTKNRO *QN[6JWTUFC[#RTKN /CUUQHVJG.QTFŏU5WRRGT RO )QQF(TKFC[#RTKN %GNGDTCVKQPQHVJG.QTFŏU2CUUKQP 0QQPRO *QN[5CVWTFC[#RTKN /QTPKPI2TC[GT $NGUUKPIQH'CUVGT$CUMGVU CO 'CUVGT8KIKN RO 5VCVKQPUQHVJG%TQUU RO Inside this Issue 'CUVGT5WPFC[#RTKN /CUUGU CO Volunteers 2 Recipe 2 75th Anniversary Celebration 3 Dinner & Dance 3 Shining Stars Nicholas Spangler Natalie Feucht Twarek Family 4 School & Religious Education • • Catch the Building Spirit 5 Catholic Schools Week 5 Confirmation 6 St. Albert Students Achieve Awards 6 April Calendar 7 May Calendar 8 • • • • • • • • Preschool Full-day Kindergarten through 8th Grade Programs: STEM, Math Counts, Power of the Pen, Music & Art Youth & PeeWee Sports Tutoring & Autism Programs New School Library & Computer Lab After School Kids Program Sunday Child Care Vacation Bible School Adult & Youth Ministry • • • • • • • • • • • • Becoming Catholic (RCIA) Legion of Mary Knitting Ministry Pro-Life Garden Guild Knights of Columbus Bible Studies Adult & Youth Choirs Fitness Classes St. Albert Youth Ministry (SAYM) Mission Trips Service Projects Refreshments & Scavenger Hunt! Campus Tours With Staff & Faculty Education Community St. Albert Volunteers - Behind the Scenes Here’s just one more example of how are many parishioners use their extraordinary talent to serve our parish in a very quiet way. The antique and much loved crèche figures, donated by the family of the late Dr. John Buerschen, always sit to the left of the main altar during our Christmas season. Made entirely of plaster, some of the figures were showing hairline cracks and missing small pieces. All were color-faded from age. Parishioner and dentist, Dr. Dan Reichert, employed all the bonding compounds and tools he uses to restore teeth in his dental practice to make the meticulous repairs. Once a figure had its parts repaired, Dan turned it over to an artist he could trust-his wife, Sue, for repainting. The project Recipe Center Enjoy Easter Desert with Apricot Squares By Holly Molnar spanned the summer months. “It was kind of fun to work on a project together,” said Dan. John Buerschen was a good friend of ours and I know he used to make the repairs in his office during the statues’ off-season. It was an honor to carry on his tradition.” Sue’s work really restored the figures’ luster. “It was rewarding to see families pose for pictures in front of the crèche,” said Sue. “It’s a subtle way families pass their faith to the next generation.” The Reicherts’ quiet contribution made a loud impression on the hearts of many parishioners viewing the crèche this Christmas season. Thank you for your work. Ingredients: Directions: 1/2 lb margarine 1/4 c. sugar 4 eggs, separated 2 c. flour 1 c. apricot filling 1 c. sugar 1 tsp vanilla 1/4 c. chopped nuts 1. McNicholas appointed Father Joseph Rolfes to “establish a new parish just beyond Oakwood, under the title and protection of Saint Albert the Great, to serve the Lord and his people of the Kettering and Oakwood community.” Advance 75 years, and here we are today! We are currently in our year long celebration of St. Albert the Greats’ 75th Anniversary, with the on-going theme being Sharing the Light of Faith. It began on St. Albert the Great Feast Day, November 15, 2013, and has gone full force ever since! Thank you to all that attended our Dinner & Dance that was held on February 14th at the Presidential Banquet Hall. Even with inclement weather, a wonderful time was had by all. The next upcoming event includes a Parish-wide Open House scheduled for Sunday, April 6 from 9 am to 2 pm. This event will highlight our Parish, our School, our Religious Education Programs for children and adults, and our many ministries. All area residents are invited to this event. Staff will be present from all departments and ministries to answer questions and give campus tours. Registration will be available for the parish, school, adult and children Religious Education programs. Coffee & Donuts will be available after all Masses in the cafeteria. Come and check out all that we have to offer as we serve the Lord and his people! We are still featuring your memories in the bulletin with the “Remember When” column. We need your memories! Please contact Sara Schwager at 298-1122 x217 with any stories, events, or memories that you have over the past 75 years. We would love to hear from you. Our year of celebration will culminate on the feast of Saint Albert the Great, Saturday, November 15, 2014, with a Mass at 4:30 pm with Archbishop Dennis Schnurr as the celebrant. Saint Albert the Great Parish is looking forward to the next 75 years of Sharing the Light of Faith with the local community! St. Albert the Great Parish Brings Fun to the Dance Floor The February 14th Dinner & Dance at the Presidential Banquet Center was a wonderful success. The snowy weather didn’t stop our fun-loving parishioners from attending the party. Attendees enjoyed tasty hors d’oeuvres along with the relaxing sounds of the Blue Heron Trio as they entered the festivities. Drinks were available and many were able to chat with friends before dinner. Father Tom gave a champagne toast and blessing then dinner was served. The buffet included prime rib, penne pasta, garlic-rosemary chicken and many other delicious sides all catered by Kohler Catering. An anniversary cake, provided by The “St. Albert Great Grub” catering service, was a sweet why to end the dinner. After dinner, parishioner Joe Aceto and his orchestra opened the dance floor and brought out the big-band-lover in everyone. Those who didn’t bring their dancing shoes were able to enjoy historic photos of the parish. Smug Shot Party Pix was on hand with a photo booth for those who wanted to commemorate the occasion with a picture of their own. Cross Productions DJ closed the night down with some of the attendees’ favorite songs. The DJ even stayed a little later to help everyone get their fill of dancing. Jeff & Laynae Meyer, Pete & Janie Stefan Denny & Linda Carter The Joe Aceto Orchestra Attendees left the event with full stomachs, worn-out dancing shoes, a handful of St. Albert the Great M&Ms and smiling faces. The event definitely demonstrated how fun this parish truly is. THE GREAT GAZETTE 3 Shining Stars A Shining Star is someone who is showcased for their outstanding involvement in St. Albert the Great Parish. If you would like to nominate a Shining Star, call the Involvement Office at 298-1122. St. Albert School 8th Graders Nicholas Spangler has been a St. Albert the Great (STAG) parishioner for his entire life and received all of his sacraments through St. Albert Church. He serves our parish as a school tutor, Altar Server, Lector at school Masses, Vacation Bible School helper, and is training to be a Eucharistic minister. He also serves the community through the St. Albert Boy Scout Troop 318 and St. Albert Youth Ministry (SAYM). Jim & Melissa Twarek have been parishioners at St. Albert the Great for 8 years. They are both from the Dayton area, and graduated from Wright State University in 1996. Nicholas Spangler His favorite thing about STAG? “The friendships you form throughout all the St. Albert activities and school” said Nicholas. “My mother, Paige, is a second grade teacher here at St. Albert. My father, Jerry, is an engineer and builds museums all over the country. I have 3 older brothers. Michael, Zachary and Nathan. They all attended St. Albert from pre-school through 8th grade.” He enjoys playing CYO soccer, basketball, volleyball, track and hopes to continue in sports while attending Fairmont High School next year. Something you may not know about Nicholas is that he wants to be a doctor when he grows up. Thank you, Nicholas, and best wishes for a bright future! Natalie Feucht has been a St. Albert the Great (STAG) parishioner since she was born 14 years ago! She is an enthusiastic member of our parish and volunteers as a Server, Lector and Mass Coordinator for school Masses. She also walks the Young Five kindergarten class to and from their classroom. Natalie Feucht Natalie is the eldest daughter of Dan and Amy Feucht and has five siblings: Abby, Jacob, Ellie, Alex and David. She enjoys playing CYO volleyball, basketball, soccer and track, as well as CJ Eagles basketball. Something you might not know about Natalie is that she is a self-proclaimed “awful dancer” and loves to eat. Natalie enjoys being a part of SAYM, St. Albert Youth Ministry and attended the teen retreat last month. “I felt it to be very inspiring and eye-opening and loved every minute of it!” said Natalie. When asked what she likes about STAG, she said “the community and the atmosphere. All are welcome. I like how supportive my classmates are through all sorts of highs and lows. The teachers never turn down a question and are always willing to help.” Thank you, Natalie for your service to our parish! 4 THE GREAT GAZETTE After Jim and Melissa were married, they lived The Twarek Family in different areas of the country; however, ended up back in the Dayton area by 2004. They reside in Springboro with their two children, Jacob and Elana. Melissa currently is Engineer Resource Manager for the Data Fusion and Analysis Division at Leidos Company. She also is an Adjunct Instructor at Wright State University teaching several courses in Developmental Mathematics. Jim currently works at St. Albert School as a Pre-School Aide and Computer Teacher. He also is a substitute teacher. They are both very active parishioners. Jim is a 4th degree Knights of Columbus only after 2 years! He is the Deputy Grand Knight for Council 4022. He also serves on the Athletic Board and is a part of the Garden Guild. He is a Eucharistic Minister and assists with Ushering, when needed. He helped to remodel the SAYM Youth area in the Spirit Center basement. Melissa is on the PTO and assists with Day Care during Mass. They both helped to improve our parish by re-tiling the walls in the school after the new drinking fountains were installed. They are both active outside the parish as well. Melissa served as a Science Fair judge for the Dayton STEM school at the Montgomery county event. She leads several charitable efforts such as the United Way Giving Tree, the American Heart Association Heart Walk, March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, and American Diabetes Association. She was honored as Distinguished member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Family is very important to them both. “We love to travel with our kids and show them interesting things in different cities”, says Melissa. She continues, “We have enjoyed meeting, working, and sharing our faith with the people of St. Albert the Great!” Catch the Building Spirit Kickoff Let’s join together and help build a home for Habitat for Humanity! John O’Malley 694-9603 Theology of the Body Retreat - Maria Stein March 7-9, 2014 Catholic Schools Week Rosary Service Project St. Albert the Great School celebrated Catholic Schools Week with a bang! It started out Monday, January 27th with a Dress In Your Favorite Book Character day. We had children coming to school dressed as Dr. Seuss, Harry Potter, and many other interesting book characters. During the week, many fun and new events took place. One new event was the Witness Talks. This is where students could discuss their faith with each other. We also had the usual Dress Up Day, and an All School Mass, where family could come and worship with their child. The PTO provided the teachers with a wonderful Teacher Appreciation Lunch. “It is always enjoyed and appreciated,” said a teacher. Another new event was the King Arthur Flour Bread program. Students that participated baked home-made bread, and returned it to help feed the homeless and needy. The week ended on Friday with a Spirit Day, a Pep Rally, and the Annual 8th Grade verses Teachers volleyball game! It was a great fun-filled week! Sixth and seventh grade Girl Scouts from St Albert the Great School met during Catholic Schools' Week to make rosaries. The PTO asked the group to make rosaries for adults and older children who are baptized at St Albert the Great Church this year. Each one was made with care - even though they may not be perfect! The girls completed around 24 rosaries! THE GREAT GAZETTE 5 Congratulations to our Eighth Grade Confirmation Class! This year’s Confirmation mass was celebrated on Monday, February 10 at a special 7:00 p.m. Mass. Archbishop Dennis Schnurr was the celebrant. Deacons Jeff Hall and Dave Zink assisted the Archbishop. Concelebrants were Father Meyer and Father Brown. There were 68 students from St. Albert’s School and Religious Education Program. In his homily, Archbishop Schnurr told the students that all of us have been given specific gifts and talents. God has a special plan for us as to what we are to contribute to our life’s journey. We will have great happiness and peace in our lives when we realize God’s plan. We need to be open to the Holy Spirit to guide us and find out what the plan is. Caroline Conrath, student body president, thanked the Archbishop for Confirming them and thanked the parish for welcoming them more fully into the community of the Church. A reception was held afterwards for the families and guests at which time the Archbishop visited with the students. What a great class of students! After one-on-one faith discussions with various staff members, the staff all agreed that the students were well prepared and were excited about making their Confirmation. The faith discussions were useful in talking about the gifts of the Holy Spirit, their 20 hours of community service and why they chose their Confirmation name. A big thank you to all those involved in making this important occasion so special and to the educators who worked so hard to prepare the students for this special sacrament! In addition, we’d like to thank the PTO for the special t-shirts they gave to the students as a Confirmation gift. We will pray for our eighth graders as they continue their faith walk and encourage them to keep their hearts open to the Holy Spirit!
