Ogden’s Christmas celebration Saturday, Dec. 5
Oh what fun it’ll be to ride in a ‘two-horse open wagon?’ We may or may
not have snow on the ground come Saturday, Dec. 5, but you can still enjoy
a wintery ride around town. Horse drawn wagon rides by the Haglund
family have become a staple of Ogden’s annual Christmas celebration. A
big thank you to Clark’s Food Mart and Boehm Insurance for making this
possible.
Be sure and stop by the various businesses holding open houses Saturday
evening from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon from 2 to 5 p.m.
Festivities begin with a tree lighting ceremony and Christmas caroling
at 5 p.m. under the water tower.
Of course no holiday celebration would be complete without a visit from
Jolly old St. Nick. T.R. Photography will be taking Santa Claus photos at
Water’s Edge Church.
In following with this year’s theme “Believe in the Magic of Christmas,”
children are encouraged to come dressed in pajamas, bring their favorite
blanket and snuggle up for the movie showing of “The Polar Express” at
at 6:15 p.m.

A long overdue thank you

As the music played, veterans,
families and friends sat solemnly,
staring off into space, absorbing
every meaningful word from the
Statler Brothers song “More Than
a Name on the Wall.”
The song references the Vietnam
Wall, a memorial honoring all who
served, and most importantly, gave
their lives fighting for their country
in Vietnam.
Those gathered at the National
Guard Armory in Boone Saturday
afternoon, Nov. 14, were reminded
of the eight servicemen from Boone
County whose names are etched into
the granite.
Tens of thousands never came
back alive. And the battle-worn
soldiers who did were not welcomed
with fanfare. Just the opposite. They
faced severe ridicule from the many
who opposed America’s participation in the war.

House fire impacts family
In commemoration of the 50th
anniversary of the war’s ending, federal, state and local organizations
were asked to assist in thanking and
honoring our Vietnam veterans and
their families for their service, valor
and sacrifice.
DeShon Chapter of Daughters of
the American Revolution sponsored
a recognition reception that featured a killed in action tribute, a flag
ceremony, guest speaker BG Steven
W. Altman, Deputy Commanding
General of the Iowa National Guard,
and presentation of certificates to
veterans and family in attendance.
There was no family to come
forward when a candle was lit for
1964 Ogden High School graduate
Dennis Kouhns. His parents have
long passed and he had no siblings.
But all those gathered in the Armory would leave that day feeling
a special connection to each of the
county’s fallen soldiers after hearing
the tributes:

was born August 3, 1946 to parents
Ben and Mabel Kouhns and raised
in Ogden.
Dennis liked to read, play his
stereo, make model cars and hunt.
He was a member of the National
Thespian Society and was in several plays. Working on the high
school annual was “one of my most
memorable experiences,” Dennis
had said. He loved motorcycles and
was always mechanical.
He attended Boone Junior College and then Iowa State University
before joining the Army. While in
Vietnam, Specialist 5 Kouhns served
as a Vehicle Maintenance Expert
with Troop A, 2nd Squadron, 1st
Cavalry, 4th Infantry Division.
While investigating enemy activity
outside of Kontum City, Specialist 5
Kouhns’ patrol came under enemy
rocket and mortar fire. A rocket
impacted near him and he was
mortally wounded on the morning
of January 30, 1968.
Flags at the American Legion
building, the post office and the
school flew at half-staff and businesses closed for one hour in Ogden
during the service.
Dennis had been on 29 combat
missions while 23 was to be the
limit. He commented, “I’d rather be
on patrol, but I know guard duty is
safer.” He had just written his parents, “I’m safe now. All I will have

rest at the Linwood Park Cemetery
in Boone.
He was an only child and his
parents are deceased.

reception for area veterans. Next week The Ogden
Reporter will share three feature stories.

The family of Larry and Brenda Mathews lost most of their possessions in a house fire Monday, Nov. 16 when the house they
were renting at 419 NE Third Street caught fire. A benefit soup
dinner was held Sunday, Nov. 22 at Zion Lutheran Church to
help the family replace clothing and household items. Funds
collected (up to $1,000) will be matched by Thrivent Financial.
Boxes have been placed at the church for clothing and bedding
donations. Larry and Brenda have four children.
Another successful blood drive here Food basket order deadline nears
Thanks to all the wonderful blood donors who volunteered their time to
make a life-saving blood donation at the recent Ogden Community blood
drive. A total 22 people registered to donate blood and 23 units of blood
were collected at this blood drive.
Patrons of the Ogden Food Pantry who would like a holiday food basket
are asked to call Sandy at 275-2385 or Karen at 275-2990 by Wednesday,
Nov. 25.
The holiday baskets will be given out Saturday, Dec. 5, from 8:30-10:30
a.m. at the Community United Methodist Church 337 SW 2nd Street.

Bruce Wright retires after
34-plus years with the
Civil Air Patrol

There was only standing room
left in Davenport, Iowa’s Civil Air
Patrol squadron assembly room
on November 3rd. Officers, cadets,
retirees and family members came
together to honor Lt. Col. Bruce C.
Wright (OHS Class of 1953, son of
Margaret L. Wright and Lt. Col. William C. Wright) for his 34+ years of
service to the US Civil Air Patrol, 17
of them in Davenport.
Powerfully motivated by family
aviation tragedy early in his life, Lt.
Col. Wright resolved as a young man
that aviation would be a lifelong priority. After completing active duty
service as an officer in the U.S. Navy,
G.I. Bill benefits helped fund Col.
Wright’s flying lessons, he could be
seen training in the late May sky of
Racine, WI in 1971. He qualified
to fly by himself two months later,
earning his private pilot’s license
to fly with passengers the following
June. Training steadily, by 1977 he
was a commercial pilot, able to fly
multi-engine aircraft in all but the
worst weather.
As a CAP pilot, Lt. Col. Wright
supported an organization responsible for over 85% of Federal inland
search and rescue, disaster relief,
aerospace education and extensive STEM (Science/Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics)
programs for youth 12 years of age
and older. The Civil Air Patrol (CAP)
is an all volunteer civilian auxiliary
of the U.S. Air Force that employs
light aircraft, ground teams, and
a national emergency radio communications network to assist communities in times of need.
Volunteers in every state in the
nation and Puerto Rico interested

in aviation, emergency services, and
youth development join together in
the form of local squadrons to educate, train, and provide these valuable resources. The local squadron
teams are in turn supported by a
state level Wing staff.
CAP membership is a major
commitment to community service.
Members donate time and money,
steadily training between missions.
In March of 1981, Col. Wright offered his services to our country,
joining the Waukesha, WI CAP
squadron which then offered both
youth programs and flew emergency
missions.
His first CAP mission came
later in 1981, but not as pilot in
command. It takes further special
training for any pilot no matter how
qualified, to be a CAP mission pilot.
Col. Wright completed that later
in 1982, leading to his first flight
as mission pilot in command of an
airborne mission crew that May.
In 1987, his engineering career
took him from Wisconsin to Ne-
braska, where he transferred to the
Millard, NE (Omaha airport) squadron. In 1990, upon completion of
his time in the Navy Reserves as a
Captain, he accepted appointment
as CAP squadron commander.
“I remember celebrating the
Civil Air Patrol’s 50th anniversary,
our squadron held a big pancake
breakfast right beside the taxiways
of the airport,” he said. Through Col.
Wright’s leadership, the squadron
grew to 32 adult members (18 of
them pilots), and 17 teen ‘cadet’
members. “I flew my longest mission while there, 7 hours and 40
minutes in the air, all the while
buckled in the pilot’s seat with two
other people in a small airplane. We
were basically loitering, back and
forth over a search area.”
In 1996 Lt. Col. Wright’s engineering job took him back to
Wisconsin briefly, then on to the
Quad Cities in 1998. His missions
included everything from giving
cadets orientation flights (the cadet
sits in the co-pilot’s seat), to counter
drug enforcement missions.
Dedicated to lifelong learning,
Lt. Col. Wright learned to tow glider
aircraft off the ground behind his
airplane, launching them into free
flight when high enough. In 2010,
Lt. Col. Wright earned the honor
of being the flight instructor who
teaches and examines others to
themselves become flight instructors. He also taught both pilot and
non-pilot CAP members as crew for
search and rescue ‘observer’ and
‘scanner’ duties.
Col. Wright’s last flight as mission pilot in command was logged
on March, 20, 2015. During his
CAP career, he donated nearly
1,100 hours flying CAP missions,
and many times more than that in
CAP-related ground duties for our
country.

safe this winter
The Iowa State Patrol would
like to remind drivers that vehicles
respond differently in cold weather
as do we. There are several ways to
keep yourselves safe in the winter
time.
1. Make sure your vehicle is tuned
up and ready for winter.
2. Always have at least a half a
tank of gas. You may need the fuel
if you get stuck in the snow.
3. Ask yourself “do I really need
to go out in this weather”? If the trip
can wait, then wait.
4. Make sure you have supplies
in the vehicle- canned easy to open
food, bottled water, first aid kit, and
flashlight (survival kit).
5. Have extra blankets, gloves,
hats or clothes in the car.
6. If you must travel call ahead
check out the road condition. Let
someone know your route.
7. Dial 511 or visit www.511ia.org
before you travel.
8. Slow down, don’t be in a
hurry. Just because the speed limit
is posted doesn’t mean you need to
go that fast.
9. Drive defensively; watch out
for the other driver.
10. Above all always wear your
seatbelt.

This is a weekly feature highlighting some of Iowa’s unsolved homicides in the hopes that it
will lead to new tips and potentially help solve cases. The project is a partnership between this
newspaper and other members of the Iowa Newspaper Association.
Scott M. Tompkins
Scott M. Tompkins, 23, was shot Nov.
29, 1995, while stopped to ¿[ his windshield wipers at the intersection of Park
Avenue and Harrison Street in Muscatine. Tompkins was found wounded at
9:43 p.m. only blocks from the Hardee’s restaurant where he worked as the
assistant manager. His coworkers described him as a nice young man without an enemy in the world. Investiga-
tors said the homicide was not related
to Tompkins’ job.
Tompkins’ mother stated her son
wasn’t happy with the increased gang
presence in Muscatine and that he was
stalked prior to his murder.
In February 2010, Muscatine Police
said they hoped new technology would
provide the key to charging someone
with Tompkins’ murder.

Donald E. Huntley
Hastings Funeral Home in Perry, is in charge of arrangements for
Donald Edward Carhill, 82, of rural Ogden. He died on Nov. 13, 2015 at
the Perry Lutheran Home. Visitation will be at Hastings Funeral Home in
Perry, on Friday, Nov. 20, 2015 after 11 a.m., with family present from 6-8
p.m. Funeral Services will be held Saturday Nov. 21, 2015 at 10:30 a.m.
at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bouton. Donald is survived by his son,
Dale Carhill (Pamela) of Saipan; daughter, Cindy Carlson (Roger) of Cedar
Rapids; and three grandchildren. Sister, Irene Madole of Brownsville, TX;
Sister in-law Ella Carhill of Jefferson.
Donald E. Huntley Sr., 81, of Ogden, IA, passed away on Wednesday,
Nov. 18, 2015, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.
Don’s wishes were to be cremated. A memorial service will be held 11
a.m., Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015, at the Leonard Good Community Center, 114
SW 8th St., in Ogden. Pastor Bruce Thomas will officiate. Visitation will
be Saturday, from 9 a.m. until the time
of service at the Community Center.

Donald Eugene Huntley Sr. was
born on Aug. 23, 1934, in Ashland,
WI, the son of Harry and Esther (Harrington) Huntley.
On Aug. 27, 1952, Don was united
in marriage to Delilah “Dee” Heck in
Bethany, MO. To this marriage five
children were born: Debbi, Don, Dave,
Darren, and Dustine.
Don retired from Osmundson’s
Manufacturing in Perry in the late
1970’s after 25 years of service. He
then pursued other opportunities
he enjoyed such as driving truck for
D.A. Wilson and Land O’ Lakes, ran
a small ice cream shop in Ogden, and

worked at CDS Global in Boone. He

also worked at the Boone County 4-H
camp, from which he retired.
Don’s passion in life included playing in Country-Western bands with
his friends, and singing & playing drums. He thoroughly enjoyed his
grandkids and attending their extra curricular activities. Nothing made
him more happy or brought him more joy than his children, grandchildren,
and great-grandchildren.
Among the survivors are his wife, Delilah “Dee” Huntley of Ogden, IA;
five children, Debbi Huffman, Don Huntley Jr., David (Kit) Huntley, and
Darren (Teresa) Huntley all of Ogden, IA, and Dustine (Mike) Peterson
of Ogden, IA; ten grandchildren, Derek (Kerry) Wirtz, Dani (Josh) Sanders, Loni Huntley, Jessi (Matt) Good, Jim Williams, Kris (Joe) Elsberry,
Ashley Vaughn, Whitney (David) Schlicht, Justin (Mackenzie McDowell)
Peterson, and Casey Peterson; 19 great grandchildren; and one great-great
grandson; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Esther Huntley,
and his mother and father-in-law, Alvin and Lelia Heck, two sisters and
one brother.
Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
The church of Christ Who are these people?
The word “church” can refer to the church universal Matt. 16:18; Eph. 5:23),
the whole body of believers, or to a local body of Christians (Rom. 16:16; 1 Cor.
1:2).
When you are baptized into Christ (Rom. 6:3-4), He added you to His church
(Acts 2:41, 47). This refers to the church universal, the body of all the saved who
belong to Christ (Eph. 2:16; 4:4; 1:22-23). On the other hand, such expressions in Scripture as “the church of God which is at Corinth” (1 Cor. 1:2) refer
to a local church, a congregation of those who belong to the Lord in a particular
locality who have banded together to work and worship collectively in those things
God would have them to do. The Christian, while added to the universal church
by the Lord, joins himself to the local church like the apostle Paul did with the
church in Jerusalem in Acts 9:26.
Every Christian needs to be identified with a local church. When a child of God
moves from one locality to another, he should seek out a faithful group of the
Lord’s people and identify with them in order to fulfill his share of the collective
responsibilities the Lord has given him. For, you see, the local church is the only
collective functioning unit revealed in the New Testament. The church universal
has no organization with which it can function. Nor are there any structural ties
between local churches. Each local congregation is an independent, autonomous,
i.e., self-governing, group.
God has designated that when there are qualified men to serve, each local
church should be organized with elders, deacons and members (Phil. 1:1). The
qualifications for elders are found in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9. The deacons’ qualifications are found in 1 Timothy 3:8-13. Elders are to tend the church
(1 Pet. 5:2) and rule over it (Heb. 13:17) by exercising oversight (1 Pet. 5:2),
to watch out for the souls placed in their charge (Heb. 13:17), to admonish
the unruly (1 Pet. 5:1-2) and be an example to all (1 Pet. 5:2). Deacons are
special servants who attend to those things the church needs and the elders
direct them to accomplish. If there are no qualified men in a congregation who
can serve in these offices, a local church may exist and function by using such
an expedient as a business meeting -- a meeting of the men of the congregation
which determines the course of action the church will follow in accomplishing
the work of the Lord.

A BCSP deputy arrested Minnie
Harper on an outstanding warrant
for contempt. She was taken to the
BCJ.
7:19 p.m.: A person called the
BCSO to report a domestic situation in the 1800 block of Magnolia
Road. A deputy was advised and
responded. After separating the two
parties involved one of the parties
agreed to leave for the night. There
was no report of any injuries.
The BCSO assisted the Ogden
Police Department with a domestic
situation in the 600 block of W.
Walnut.
17 entering Boone County. A deputy
was advised and located the vehicle
and made a traffic stop on 17. After a
brief investigation the driver of the
vehicle Eric Sloan was detained for
further investigation into possible
OWI. He was transported to BCJ
for further testing.
Sunday, Nov. 15
7:25 p.m.: Kyle Boyer turned
himself in to a BCSO deputy on
outstanding warrants for probation
revocation and failure to report for
sentencing. He was taken to the
BCJ.
Frisday, Nov. 20
2:08 a.m.: A person called the
BCSO to report a reckless driver all
over the road at 222nd Dr. on US
30. A deputy was in the area and
located the vehicle at the off ramp
at Ogden. The deputy stopped the
vehicle on Veterans Dr. After a
brief investigation the driver of the
vehicle Samantha Griffith was detained for further investigation into
possible OWI. She was transported
to the BCJ for further testing.

advised they had a caller behind a

The Ogden City Council met in Regular Session on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at
7:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor Denny Good presided. Members

Under Public Comment, a resident requested an update on a Code violation at 307
SE 4th Street. City Attorney Lee Johnson will work with Chief Mick Bailey to cite the
owner for the violation. Members discussed regulating construction of other structures
within the City. Olson provided options to consider. Reimers would like to consider a
change.
Under Department Reports, Street Superintendent Dan Buzzell expressed concern
that severe weather would down flags on Walnut Street during Veterans Day. Reimers
suggested limiting the flag display to two blocks of Walnut Street. The Council agreed
that it would address the concern about severe weather and still allow the City to honor
Veterans. Thede informed the Council that he is working with FOX Engineering on a
plan for Clean Water Projects. Participation in the Beaver Creek Watershed will help us
access funding for a project. He will provide more information at the December Council
Meeting. Bailey reported break-ins and theft at various locations in town last month. Officer Benjamin and Officer Jones have requested to acquiring tasers as an option
before using more aggressive measures. Bailey will look into purchase. The digital
radio system continues experience problems and towers are to be built to correct the
issues.
Olson presented the Council with a part-time temporary custodian employment
agreement for Jill Meeker that is effective through December 6th.
Liston made a motion and Anderson seconded to approve the part-time custodian
agreement and to approve hiring Jill Meeker.
Olson presented new job descriptions for the part-time custodian position for the
Library, City Hall and Community Center.
Ohlson made a motion and Reimers seconded to approve the job descriptions as
distributed.
Anderson made a motion, Ohlson seconded to approve Liquor Licenses for The
Lucky Pig.
Olson provided the 2014-2015 Annual Financial Report to Council and gave a brief
summary of the report. Reimers made a motion, Anderson seconded to approve Resolution No.406 “A
Resolution to approve the 2014/2015 Annual Financial Report.” Ayes: All Present, Motion Carried.
At 7:56 p.m. Anderson moved to adjourn. Ohlson seconded. Ayes: All Present, Motion

Monday, November 16
7:04 a.m.: Officer moved a piece
of furniture off the road just east of
H Avenue on 220th Street.
9:34 a.m.: Officer assisted Ogden
Fire, Boone Fire, and Boone County
Ambulance with a house fire at 419
NE 3rd Street.
Tuesday, November 17
6:30 a.m.: A cellular phone was
found in the 400 block of South
First Street. The phone was turned
over to the Ogden Police Department. It appears to have been run
over, as the screen is shattered.
1:35 p.m.: Officer provided a
funeral escort from Zion Lutheran
Church to the Glenwood Cemetery.
Wednesday, November 18
8:16 a.m.: Officer issued a civil
infraction to Toni Berns, 44, of
Ogden. This was civil infraction in
violation of Ogden’s Outdoor Lighting Code.
10:22 a.m.: Officer was asked to
look for a possible intoxicated driver
westbound on 220th from Boone. The officer stopped the vehicle on
the westbound 220th Street off
ramp to Ogden. The driver was not
impaired.
12:55 p.m.: Officer responded to
a fire alarm at Howe Elementary. This was a false alarm. The alarm
company was on scene testing the
system.
2:00 p.m.: Jeffrey Orrell of
Ogden reported that someone had
placed a No Trespass sign on his
wife’s vehicle while it was parked
in the 100 block of SW 3rd on Monday, November 16, 2015. Jeffrey
also reported being yelled at by an
Ogden resident while he was in the
100 block of NW 3rd Street between
old laundromat and Walnut Street
Health and Wellness, on Friday, November 13, 2015. Officer spoke with
the alleged suspect and he denied
yelling at Mr. Orrell. This case is
under investigation. If anyone has
witnessed either of these events
please contact the Ogden Police
Department.
10:15 p.m.: Officer responded to
Casey’s General Store parking lot in
reference to suspicious individuals
in a car. They were taking a nap.
Thursday, November 19
5:28 p.m.: Officer was asked
to perform a welfare check on an
Ogden resident at 619 Haws Drive #
7. Officer was able to gain entrance
to the apartment and discovered
that Michael Rood, 67, of Ogden had
passed away. Officer notified medical examiner and family members.
