ACCF Allegan County Community Foundation Annual Report 2010 I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver. Maya Angelou For good. For ever. ACCF Allegan County Community Foundation Annual Report 2010 Dear Friends, If we aren’t careful, the turmoil of the economy, the needs of our neighbors, local and afar, and the injustices we see around the world can make us question; where is the good? Good news. Good people. Good change. It is here. In Martin, Hamilton, Saugatuck, Allegan – all throughout Allegan County. As you read through this year’s annual report. Look deeper. Each grant, project, and scholarship came to be because people care. People care about what happens here in Allegan County. We award grants and scholarships because we know that families should not go without food and shelter, children without education, seniors without opportunities and organizations without the ability to provide. Each gift to the Allegan County Community Foundation supports our community. Every gift is appreciated and impactful; no matter the size. With Deep Respect, Theresa Bray, CEO/Executive Director To positively impact the Allegan County community through the establishment and growth of permanently endowed funds. 2 F Board of Trustees Committees of the Board Paula Baker, President TAG TEAM FINANCE COMMITTEE Hannah Schulz, Co-President Hannah Kasprzyk, Co-President Arista Sauceda Alex Wittkop Allie Thiel Taylor Laird Chuck Blades Zach Moeller Lexie McQueer Megan Walli Will Braschler Kelsey Whitcomb Cambria Whitcomb Rob Marciniak Steve Angle Brian Marr Nancy Fifelski Tom Bos Rob Marciniak, Vice-President Steve Angle, Treasurer John Mahan, Secretary David Balas Jodi White Brian Marr Lynn Etheridge Mark Dobias Nancy Fifelski Hannah Kasprzyk, Youth Trustee GROWTH COMMITTEE Paula Baker Jodi White David Balas John Mahan Mark Dobias Lynn Etheridge Julie Abel DISTRIBUTION COMMITTEE David Balas Pam Tanis Joyce Bruder Mary Ann Moeller ACCF STAFF Theresa Bray Lee Wittkop Angie Brown Hannah Schulz, Youth Trustee 3 Allegan County Community Foundation 2010 ACCF DONORS We are most effective when we work together. 4 Allegan County Community Foundation Legacy Endowment Fund Allegan County Community Foundation Operations Endowment Fund Steve and Misty Angle David Balas and Jim Sellman Ruth Berkin Gerald and Ann Bray Joyce Bruder Jacqueline Carey David and Alverna De Visser Carol and Bert Doeringer Jean and Dick Doub Norm and Nancy Fifelski Sharon and Robert Goodrich Karen Kalichman Rob and Dawn Marciniak Steve and Nancy McKown Albert and Nioma Meshkin David L. West Michigan Cultural Trails (WMCT) 2010 brought the initial grant cycle to Allegan County for collaborative projects that align with the West Michigan Cultural Trails mission to “cultivate, promote and preserve the region’s cultural economy”. West Michigan Cultural Trails has been working to bring awareness to the businesses in the region that reflect the values of “handmade, homegrown and possess a flavor that is unique and authentic to the region”. In the first grant cycle, collaborations between non-profits and businesses were formed. Three projects were awarded grants of $1,000 each. Allegan Chamber of Commerce Partners: Specialty Shops of Allegan [Antiques Etc., 3-D Beads, Water Street Place Antique Mall, B & C Emporium, Beneath the Trees Gallery & Studio, Sharon’s Quilts & More, Marr Haven, Starry Night Gallery, Reflexions Plus and DC Designs. The grant provided funding for the launch of a website that promotes and highlights our artisans, our heritage, our history and our beautiful hometown atmosphere and culture. Fennville Chamber of Commerce Partners: Blue Coast Artists [Lattner Studio, Blue Star Pottery, Khnemu Studio, Blue Roan Studio, Lakshore Textiles and Lake Effect Pottery] Blue Coast Artists was the first group in the region to promote cultural heritage tourism through a defined tour. This self-guided experience offers a unique look into the studios of working artists. By partnering with the Fennville Chamber of Commerce, the promotion and marketing of the 22nd Annual Blue Coast Artists Fall Tour of Studios will reach audiences that the Blue Coast Artists have yet to reach. The grant supports the enhanced, combined marketing efforts of the Chamber and partners. Lakeshore Harvest Country Partners: Blue Coast Artists, Overhisel Orchards and Improvisational Farmer The marketing of a collaborative brochure that highlights local farms, vineyards, artists and studios was funded by a WMCT grant. The brochure promotes the Southwest region of Allegan County as a destination for both agri-tourism and cultural tourism. It enables even small “off the beaten path” artisan and farmers to be easily “found” by tourists who seek cultural experiences while in this region. 23 Allegan County Community Foundation 2010 ARTSALIVE “I must study politics and war, that my sons may study mathematics and philosophy... in order to give their children the right to study painting, poetry, music and architecture.” –John Q. Adams 24 s During the 2008 and 2009 grant cycles the Foundation narrowed the focus of awards to target services aimed at homeless prevention, homeless services, food pantries and the vulnerable populations within our community. In doing so, the organizations that bring arts and culture to our lives have survived in the background. But not very well. Donations and grants to the arts/culture community have gone down by as much as 80%. Simply to keep the doors open, a number of these organizations have laid off staff, stopped paying staff or are cutting back on hours and services. The thought of losing any of the organizations that provide artistic and/or cultural education and entertainment is of great concern to the Foundation. To bring awareness to the situation facing our arts and culture organizations, the Foundation developed Keep Your ArtsAlive!. ArtsAlive! is a competition that increases visibility of those non-profits that enrich our lives through the provision of or access to music, dance, visual arts, and historical education. In addition to increasing visibility, ArtsAlive! is meant to encourage the public to vote with their dollars for organizations they are not willing to lose. Every vote cost one dollar and each dollar went back to the organization that received the vote. Votes Tallied: $24,333 Prizes for the top five organizations with the most votes: $20,000 Votes were received from 14 states. Over 500 people voted in the first Keep Your ArtsAlive! Without his insight into what an endowment could do, Allegan County non-profits would not have had the millions of dollars in grants over the last 57 years. Generations of families have benefitted from this gift. Generations more will benefit. All because Mr. Stone had a vision; plan a gift that would multiply its’ value for ever. He exemplified for good, for ever long before it was a talking point of community foundations far and wide. Margaret Allen Scholarship Fund Margaret was a high school math teacher at Allegan High School. Her love for young people and math was evident to anyone who knew her. Shortly after Margaret passed away the Allegan County Community Foundation received word that Margaret had left her estate to the Foundation for the purpose of a scholarship. Margaret’s planned gift provided over $1,200,000 for the establishment of the scholarship. To date it has provided more than $90,000 in education for Allegan High School graduates. Elaine Hobbs Working with her attorney, Elaine structured her planned gift to benefit the children of Allegan County. She trusted that challenge to the members of the TAG Team. Elaine’s gift was her estate. Her home was paid for and she had left her friends and relatives the sentimental items of importance. After the sale of the house, the TAG Team received $120,000 and dedicated an annual amount for youth leadership opportunities.
