What Is Vital Church Initiative (VCI)
Vital Church Initiative or VCI is a 3-year plan to assist churches in the “process of renewal for growing vital and fruitful congregations in Michigan”.
The goal is to equip leaders to lead congregations directly into God’s mission field.
The Church’s Traveling VCI Team consisting of Pastor Joe, Terri and Larry and Fran Hill attended the first meeting on VCI on 9/12 at Northlawn
UMC in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The training session included an exercise on developing leadership, analyzing statistics for the current condition of the church, looking at challenges
that face the ministry in the 21st century and reviewing the book entitled “Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations”.
You will continue to hear much more about VCI as the traveling VCI Team attends eight more training sessions in the months ahead. Additionally,
Pastor Joe will be creating a Home VCI Team to help develop and assimilate the learning from the training sessions.
Vital Church Initiative (VCI)
You will begin to hear the term “Vital Church Initiative” (VCI) a lot in coming months. The “Vital Church Initiative” (VCI) is a ministry of renewal that the Michigan
Conference of United Methodists are seeking to implement in Churches, to keep them vital, healthy, growing, and reaching out to make new disciples of Jesus Christ
for the transformation of the world. I received a letter and invitation from our Kalamazoo District and our Church Growth Leader of our Michigan Conference,
encouraging our Church to become part of the Vital Church Initiative. The Church Growth Leader of our Michigan Conference, who visited our Church when Rev.
Bob Farr was speaking at our Church last March, described our Church as “one of the best kept secrets in the Michigan Conference.” He believes that if our Church
is involved in VCI, it will lead to wonderful vitality, health, and growth, as God’s Spirit uses the process to move in the lives of our Church People. Currently Larry and
Fran Hill, along with Me and my wife, Terri, attend monthly meetings in Grand Rapids for prayer and for learning and for challenge. This group than begins to meet
with people in our Church, to continue the process of prayer and learning and challenge. Please continue to pray for the “Vital Church Initiative” (VCI) in our Church,
that God will use it and bless it and lead our Church to continued vitality, health, and growth, as we continue to reach out and make new disciples of Jesus Church for

"Bring A Friend to Church Sunday" October 25
This fall, our Church Good News Outreach Team has designated Sunday, October 25 as "Bring A Friend to
Church Sunday." The theme is “Life Goes Best When You Share Jesus with A Guest.” Everyone in both the 9:30
a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Church Services will be challenged to bring a friend to Church that Sunday. Our Good News
Outreach Team is working to make our Church a friendly and welcoming place, ready to greet guests when they arrive and
demonstrate that our Church is a place where "Jesus Love Is Lived." Be in the process of praying for and inviting your friends to Church
on Sunday, October 25. You will hear more about this event from our Church Good News Outreach Team. Please realize that you can
invite your friends to Church any Sunday Morning!!!
Some suggestions to get people to invite others to Church:






Keep an awareness before your church people that they need to invite others to church.
Don’t be afraid of rejection. Many people look forward to getting invited to Church. Celebrate those who accept your
invitation.
Don’t be reluctant to invite others because your church isn’t perfect. No church is.
Pastors must encourage their congregation to invite others to church.
Don’t discount the potential success you can have with a “Bring a Friend to Church Day.” God’s Spirit will be
working with us!!!
God uses us as God's instruments to invite others. It is one way we are obedient to the Great Commission of taking
the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the World.

October as “Staff-Parish Relations Committee” Appreciation Month
Some years back, a conservative Christian author and leader, Dr. James Dobson, came up with the idea of making October, “Pastor
Appreciation Month.” Although I agree with many of Dr. Dobson’s ideas, the idea of “Pastor Appreciation Month” is not one of them.
Making October “Pastor Appreciation Month” is confusing for many pastors and churches. Most Churches do something to show
appreciation for their Pastors at Christmas time, and “Pastor Appreciation Month” in October seems out of place. Therefore, I have
chosen to use October as a month to voice my appreciation to my personnel and advisory committee, the Staff-Parish Relations
Committee (SPRC). This committee sets the Pastor’s pay and benefits, fills out yearly evaluation forms, and provides time and
resources for the Pastor’s professional development and support. They allow me to take time off during the summer for rest and
spiritual renewal. I realize my ministry at our Church would not be effective, without a supportive and loving and caring Pastor-Parish
Relations Committee. The following people make up this committee: Chairperson Jim Miller, Craig Sisson, Laura Suglia, Gary
Trobeck, Jim Hoffman, Deb Kiel, David Goodrich, Doug Rex, Fran Hill, Anna Starr, Deb Agne, and Kay Strong. I thank this committee
for the time and effort they put into their tasks. During October, thank them for the work they do in supporting your Pastor. See you

Hunger Banks
On Sunday Morning, November 1, as part of our "Mission's Sunday" Emphasis, our yearly "Hunger Banks" will be
passed out. These will also be available weekly at our Church exits. These are to be taken home, placed on your
dinner table, and used to place loose change in, as you are reminded during meals that many in our community,
our nation, and our world, do not have enough to eat. The banks are to be returned to Church on the Sunday
prior to Thanksgiving, November 22. The money that is accumulated will be used to help hungry people in our
community during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays, and throughout the year, as funds remain available.

Conference
Our yearly Church Conference is scheduled for Monday Evening, October 12, at 7:00 p.m. It is a time of celebrating the great things happening in
our Church and Worshipping and Praising God. Our Church addresses and votes on important issues regarding Church leaders, Pastor’s
Compensation, etc. This is led by our Kalamazoo District Superintendent, Rev. John Boley. Please attempt to be present for this important meeting.
On Monday Evening, September 21, at our monthly Leadership Team Meeting, we will be reviewing the material and issues that we will be voting on
at the Church Conference Meeting on October 12. To be an informed person in our Church, you are invited to be at the September 21 Leadership
Team Meeting at 6:30 p.m.
As we settle into autumn, many of us think toward the Christmas holidays. Our church has been involved with the Community Christmas Basket
Program for many years, and this year is no exception! We have the wonderful opportunity to "Share Jesus' Love" with families in
need in the area. This ministry consists of the Angel Tree which will appear near the end of November, food baskets including
meat certificates purchased with proceeds from the hunger banks and a family gift, which is blankets/throws this year. (If you
purchase blankets or throws, they can be left on the Mission table in the fellowship hall at any time!)
We will assemble the baskets the afternoon of Friday, December 18th and deliver Saturday, December 19th. Not only is this a
wonderful chance to meet the needs of our community, it is a treasured time of sharing fellowship with our devoted church family! Please pray about

Parts For Sale
Parts of our new piano will be symbolically for sale beginning in October. In an effort to raise the money we will need for the purchase of a new
piano for our sanctuary, we will begin “selling” the 88 keys of the keyboard, the three pedals, the music rack and the case of the new piano. Prices
range from $25 to $1,000 depending on the part that is being supported. Contributions can be put in the offering plate or turned into the office
indicating which part is being supported.
To jump start this effort, the funds given in memory of Jim Hewitt have been designated for the piano. Currently those funds total just over
$1,000 giving us a good beginning for our fundraising.
The piano committee continues to meet, researching and looking at our options and hoping that the funds will be available to purchase a new
instrument by Christmas. We have learned that a new piano will cost between $7,000-$10,000 depending on what instrument we select and what
features that instrument offers.
We are also planning a concert in support of this effort sometime after the first of the year. Those with musical talents who would be interested
in performing are encouraged to contact Sue Daniels. We are open to all musical gifts both vocal and instrumental.
To Celebrate the month of Harvest and all things good for us, Christian neighbors will be collecting canned
vegetables for the month of October. This time of the year there are always great sales on canned vegies so
Keep your eyes peeled and do what you can to help those in need. Anything we can do to help is always appreciated.
Soup Suppers are October 7 @ Friendship Wesleyan and October 28 at Trowbridge UMC. from 5 – 7. Warm up with some
delicious homemade soup, some fellowship , and help our community. Sounds like a God Sighting to me 

69th Annual Harvest Mission Festival
Each November (this year, Wednesday, November 4) the Otsego United Methodist Church conducts what we call our "Harvest Mission
Festival." It is a festival with a rich history that you can read about below. In practical terms, the event raises money for Mission
causes. In particular, money raised from the Meals goes to support Church Mission Causes. You can help in this event in 3 ways: 1) You
can help promote the event by getting a copy of the “Harvest Mission Festival” poster that will be available at the Church in the month of
October (call the Office, 269-694-2939 to have a copy forwarded to your e-mail) and putting it up at your work or other public places;
2) You can volunteer to be a helper during the festival (Check with our Kitchen Coordinators: Cindy Flickinger, or the Church Office, 6942939, to be assigned a job and time; 3) You can come for one of the meals. Dinner is $12 for adults, $6 for youth, and $3 for children. You
must reserve a spot for dinner servings (4:00 - 5:30 & 5:30 - 7:00). You can call the Church Office (694-2939) for reservations. During the
festival, quality nuts will be sold, with proceeds going to support our Church camping ministry. Also, there is a Bazaar and Bake Sale that
will go on all day in the basement of the Church, with proceeds going to the organization called, "United Methodist Women." We hope you
can join us for dinner on Wednesday, November 4.
69th Annual "Harvest Mission Festival" an Otsego Tradition
The 69th Annual "Harvest Mission Festival" is scheduled for the First Wednesday in November (November 4). This involves the famous Harvest
Dinner served from 4:00-7:00 (Tickets and Reservations needed), and a Bazaar and Bakeshop and Quality Nuts being sold throughout the day,
beginning at 7:00 a.m.
The Harvest Dinner began in 1946, the creation of a woman named Dorothy Brown. Dorothy's husband, Freeman Brown, was born in Otsego in
1902, and was active in the Otsego United Methodist Church as a child, a youth, and a young adult. Freeman and Dorothy were married in
1934. Freeman Brown completed medical school in 1940, and returned to Otsego to become a Doctor, where He and Dorothy were active in the
church for the next 30 years. Dorothy headed a Church organization called the "Wesleyan Service Guild" designed to bring younger women into the
Church. Dorothy Brown came up with the idea of the Harvest Dinner and spearheaded the then "younger women" to take charge and make this a
community event. 25 to 30 young women of the Church took Dorothy Brown's challenge to organize an event in their Church. The dinner began as
a dinner of Roast Chicken, Ham, Swedish Meatballs, Fresh Shrimp, pickled Herring, Mashed Potatoes, Gravy, Dressing, Salads, Rolls and Drinks
plus Dessert all for the price of $1.50.
Later, Turkey was added to the menu, replacing the Chicken. For many years, The Dugan Farm in Otsego Township raised the turkeys and
generously donated them for the dinner. They were brought in prepared ready to roast. Many of the women from the Church each took home a
turkey to roast. The Old Parsonage, which used to stand next to the Church, was also used for roasting. The men of the Church helped with carving
the meats, serving in the downstairs fellowship hall, and washing the dishes.
Over the years, the Harvest Festival grew to include a bake sale, bazaar, and quality nut sale. It remains a community tradition for many
families, with families traveling from out of town to attend the dinner each year.
In 1956, when Winkel’s Funeral Home began, they became a strong supporter of the Harvest Dinner and continue to offer financial support for the
event. The Winkel family are also regular attendees.
Dorothy Brown's son, Jim, who now lives in Grand Rapids, is one of those who travel to the Harvest Dinner each year. Jim shares that story that
Rev. Kilgren was the Pastor of the Church back in 1946 when the Harvest Dinner began. Rev. Kilgren served as Pastor of the Church until 1950.
Rev. Kilgren and the Brown Family became friends and Rev. Kilgren returned to speak at Freeman Brown’s Funeral in 1969. Dorothy Brown had a
long and active life, and died in 2008 at the age of 98.
Today, all of the proceeds of the day's events of the "Harvest Mission Dinner is divided up with 1/2 supporting our United Methodist Ministry Shares,
which is the foundation of our churches mission's giving, 1/4 going to missions and1/4 going to youth missions. If you are interested in reserving

at the home of Ann Leyndyke, a past church member.

Friday, PM: Soup/Salad Supper will be waiting for you whenever you arrive.
Saturday: Continental Breakfast will be at the house.
Then, choose to: explore the city, shop at Christmas craft bazaars,
play games at the house, take walks on the beach or in the woods,
explore nearby small towns, rest, explore the wineries.
Lunch is on your own. Supper will be back at the house.
Evening possibilities: Games, relaxing, star-lit walks, campfire.
Sunday: Hot Breakfast Brunch will be at the house.
Sunday Devotions will be at the house for all who can stay.
Lunch will be at the house for all those who remain.
Short Devotions throughout the weekend will center on a given theme.

20 years ago, Rev. Rick Warren of Saddleback Baptist Church in California, wrote
a book titled, “The Purpose Driven Church,” that has revolutionized the way most
growing Churches operate in today’s culture. Shortly after that, he wrote a book
for individual Christians titled, “The Purpose Driven Life.” It has been one of the
largest selling Christian Books in history. Our Church went through that book and
study back in the early 2000’s. The book has recently been upgraded and is now
titled, “What On Earth Am I Here For?” Our Church will be going through that
book, beginning September 27 through November 1. Pastor Joe will be
preaching about a chapter of the book each week and our Sunday Morning Adult
Bible Study will be going through the book at their 9:30-10:30 a.m. meeting time
each of those weeks. Our Thursday Morning Men’s Group will also be going
through the book on Thursday Mornings. You can order a copy of the book from
many sources on-line or from your local Christian Book Stores
From Your Parish Nurses
The goal of screening exams for early breast cancer detection is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms. Screening refers
to tests and exams used to find a disease, such as cancer, in people who do not have any symptoms. Early detection means using an
approach that lets breast cancer get diagnosed earlier than otherwise might have occurred.
Breast cancers that are found because they are causing symptoms tend to be larger and are more likely to have already spread beyond
the breast. Incontrast, breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and still confined to the breast. The
size of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are some of the most important factors in predicting the prognosis (outlook) of a woman
with this disease.
Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives co uld be saved
if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests. Following the American Cancer Society's guidelines
for the early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that breast cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage and treat ed
successfully.
Widespread use of screening mammograms has increased the number of breast cancers found before they cause any symptoms. Still
some breast cancers are not found by mammograms, either because the test was not done or because even under ideal conditions
mammograms do not find every breast cancer.
The most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or mass. A mass that is painless, hard, and has irregular edges is more
likely to be cancerous, but breast cancers can be tender, soft, or rounded. They can even be painful. For this reason, it is important to
have any new mass, lump, or breast change checked by a health care professional with experience in diagnosing breast diseases.
Other possible signs of breast cancer include:

Swelling of all or part of a breast (even if no distinct lump is felt)
Skin irritation or dimpling
•

Breast or nipple pain
•
Nipple retraction (turning inward)
Redness, scalliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin
A Nipple Discharge other than breast milk.
Sometimes a breast cancer can spread to lymph nodes under the arm or around the collar bone and cause a lump or
swelling there, even before the original tumor in the breast tissue is large enough to be felt. Swollen lymph nodes
should also be reported to your doctor.
American Cancer Society recommends women age 40 and older should have amammogram every year and should
continue to do so for as long, as they are in good health.
As a part of the Affordable Care Act, Medicare covers the full cost of a mammogram once every 12 months for all
women with Medicare aged 40 and over. Medicare also pays for a clinical breast exam when it is done for screening
or prevention.
“GOD SIGHTINGS ON A 5K RUN”

“God sightings” may be defined as times when we especially feel close to God. I especially felt close to God
while running in the recent Otsego Ready or Not 5 K Run.
I saw God in our grandson, Jacob Starr, as he ran beside me during the final half mile of the race. He was a
channel of God’s grace and a great source of encouragement to me. Here is what he said:
“How do you feel?”
(I felt good!)
“Step up your pace if you can”
“I know you have it in you”
“You’ve been working all year for this”
“The Lord is with you”
“Let the crowd carry you to the finish line.”
After the race he said, “Good job!”
