Dear Everyone,
I would like to wish you joyful winter holidays with this short quotation and let me offer you our winter edition, too,
which is full of interesting topics. Believe it or not but Xmas trees can be not only pine trees but even something else
you might have never thought of. And do you know what the traditional Xmas cookies are all over the world? If your
answer is no, then skip through the magazine and find them.
Besides, if you haven’t decided yet what to buy for your beloved ones we can recommend you our gift horoscope.
As the Winter Olympic Games are approaching we have also devoted a few pages to this giant sports event.

A shopping voucher would be a great idea so she/he
can choose what they want. But it’s also a good gift if
you buy sports equipment because an Aries is a really

elegant glasses you can choose almost anything. For

We asked four students of Bródy, which Xmas movies are their favourites.
Máté Horváth (9. G)
My favourite Xmas movie is a British romantic-comedy; Love Actually
(Igazából szerelem) . There are several things why I vote for this film. The
most important is: this film isn’t the boring one, which we can watch every
Christmas on TV2, like Home Alone (Reszkessetek betörők!) . Also, many of
my favourite actors/actresses appear in the movie (for example Colin Firth,
Bill Nighy or Emma Thompson) . But what takes the cake, my absolute
favourite actor, Alan Rickman, plays in this film too. The story takes place in
London.
The main thing in the movie is love; even at first sight, even unfulfilled love.
Lovers meet each other and unfold, while we can see and hear a burnt out
rock star for some scene, and he advises children not to use drugs, but be a
star and then they get free. So this movie is a lovely Christmas romanticcomedy.
Denise Szabó (12. C)
My favourite Christmas themed movie is „The Santa Clause”
(Télapu) . It is a family movie released in 1994. Scott (Tim Allen)
unfortunately tossed down the real Santa Claus from the roof, and
put on his jacket. After that, he was the Santa Claus. Nobody
believed him. I think it’s a really funny and exciting movie.
Dániel Süle (10. G)
My favourite Christmas themed movie is Die Hard. It is an action
movie released in 1988. The main character is John McClane played by
Bruce Willis. John tries to stop a terrorist from robbing the Nakatomi
Plaza. This movie features really good acting and action. You should
check it out! ;)
Liliána Frei (7. G)
My favourite movie about Christmas is Bad Santa (Tapló Télapó) . Willie
dresses up as Santa Claus every year. There is in fact a thief under the
red coat. When the customers go home, he and his assistant „Elf” rob the
department store’s safe. But this year a danger is threatening their action.
It’s a very funny and cute family movie.

Winter Olympics

In 2014, the Winter Olympic Games are to take place in the beautiful
Sochi, Russia. The Games start on the 7th February with a fabulous
opening ceremony. However, three of the event competitions start one
day before this ceremony. These are freestyle skiing, figure skating
and snowboarding. This spectacular international sport competition
ends on the 23th February and all the viewers have to wait another 4
years to watch the fascinating games in Korea, in 2018.
A little history
The first Winter Olympics were held in 1924. It took place in Chaminox,
France. It didn't take as many days as nowadays because there were fewer
types of competitions and only 16 nations participated. But we can be proud
because Hungary was included in these nations, although we couldn't win any
medals. Until 1992, the Winter Games were held in the same year as the
summer Olympic Games, but nowadays they are always organized between two
summer ones.
What can we see this time?
The closing date for entries hasn't arrived yet, but 43 nations have already qualified at least one athlete in this
competition so far. There will be 15 different winter sports, all of them have its own difficulties and thrilling features.

In my opinion, the Winter Olympic Games are a fantastic sport event so you shouldn't miss it. If you have a television,
you must watch the Olympic Games from 7th February in 2014.
Winter S port Hopefuls

It is cold, it is dark, and we don’t like playing football, or other sports outside. Well, many of us probably like ice skating,
skiing and sledging, but what about the professional athletes?
John James Jackson is a 36-year-old bobsledder. He took up this sport at
the age of 28, and his first season was very succesful. In 2005 he won a place in
the European Cup Team. His world debut was in 2007, and he became the British
champion one year later. In 2011 he won one gold and two bronze medals in the
European Cup, and he was the first British man to achieve that!
Eve Muirhead is a 23-year-old Scottish girl, who plays curling. She is very
young, but already a four-time world junior champion! Her debut was in 2007
(aged 17) . Her latest success is that she won the 2013 World Women’s Curling
Championship. She was also selected into Great Britain Women’s curling team at
the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.
James Woods is a succesful freestyle skier. He has been a British Freestyle
Champion 5 times, and has come 3rd and 4th at Winter Games Europe over the
past two years. This year, freestyle skiing is included in the Winter Olympics.
„When I started free skiing the Olympics wasn't even an ambition because my
discipline, slopestyle, wasn't even part of the Games .I always loved the Olympics
growing up, the work ethic of the athletes used to inspire me, I just never thought
I'd get the chance to be part of it.” – said James.
Jenny Jones (aged 33) is a British professional snowboarder. She’s not
just a good athlete, but she had roles in several movies of snowboarding (for
example Dropstitch, Transfer, Last Winter) . She won a lot of gold medals, and in
Ticket to Ride (World Snowboard Tour) she currently lies in 2nd position in the
female competition. Jenny is a Patron of the UK charity, the Caring Cancer Trust.
Shelley Rudman (32) is a British skeleton bobsledder and the reigning
world champion in that event. Her university friend introduced her the sport in
2002. A year later in 2003, she qualified for the World Junior Championships
where she finished in 10th position and highest-ranked British female. In 2004
she won the European Cup, and then the World University Games. Since 2006,
Rudman has been self-coaching and learning the tracks herself throughout the
World Cup seasons. Success continued as Rudman won the 2009 European Bob
Skeleton Championships at the St Moritz track in Switzerland, breaking the
track record with a time of 1:09.97 on her second run. In 2010 European
Championship she won the bronze medal.
Christmas pudding

Ingredients:
3 ounces of flour
1 small orange
1 small lemon
1 small cooking apple
2 eggs
5 ounces of bread crumbs
5 ounces of suet
1¼ pounds of mixed dried fruit
1 tablespoonful of treacle
½ teaspoonful of mixed spice
½ teaspoonful of cinnamon
½ teaspoonful of nutmeg
1 small carrot
6 ounces of sugar (brown or white)
4 ounces of candied peel
Pinch of salt
Preparation:
•
The first step is to mix the flour, bread crumbs, suet, and dried fruit into a large bowl. Then add the
graded orange, lemon rind and juice, the cooking graded apple, mix them well.
•
Add eggs, treacle, spices and grated carrot. Add sugar, candied peel and salt. Mix well.
•
Allow mixture to stand over night in a covered bowl.
•
Place mixture into well greased pudding bowls. Cover with grease proof paper and secure with string.
•
Pressure cook according to pressure cooker instructions.
•
Allow to mature for approximately one month before final serving, then decorate it.

My first day at our secondary school

Before the first school day, I was a little bit nervous. I was afraid of what the class, and the teachers will be like. But in
the end I was pleasantly surprised. I got to like the class from the first moment. Fortunately, now I have the same opinion,
I believe that we have a good class, and I hope that it will stay the same.
Pusztai Dalma 9.a
In the 8th class, when I had to choose a secondary school, I worried a lot about it, because I heard both good and bad things
about "Bródy". I was very happy, when I received the letter about my successful school admission. And at the end of the summer
I was thinking whether I’d be good enough to study at this school. My first school day started well. I think I could fit in the class
easily. First, all the teachers introduced themselves. They made a good impression on me. As the others also told me, most of
the students are satisfied with the class and the school (except for the snow that can come in through the closed windows) . I
feel great in this community and I hope that it won't change in the future. I'm sure that I made a good choice last March.
Horváth Nóra 9.a
I was very excited on the first day when I had to go to school. A completely new class, people, and I didn't know what I can
expect. My first day was quite long. Our teachers introduced themselves very kindly. On the first days I didn't talk to most of
the students, just a few of them, but as time went by the atmosphere became pleasant and we enjoyed ourselves.

After several days of preparation, I started my way to my new school. When I crossed the threshold, I felt that it would be
something new. I had to admit that school can be good as well. Besides acquiring knowledge, I could meet new friends, and
I'm happy to have chosen this school

I was waiting for the first school day excitedly. When I entered the classroom, I could only recognise some familiar faces.
After the school-opening ceremony we went to our classroom, and we got to know our new headteacher, and we got our
books too. Our teachers were very kind. We have a good school community, and I met a lot of new friends as well. It was a
good decision to come to "Bródy".

New Year's Eve in the US A

New Year's Eve is a major social holiday for many
people in the United States. Many people hold parties
at home or attend special celebrations to celebrate the
upcoming New Year. In many cities, large public events
are held. These often attract thousands of people.
One of the most prominent New Year's celebration in
the country is the "ball drop" held in New York City's
Times Square. The ball is made of crystal and electric
lights and is placed on top of a pole, which is 77 feet,
or 23 meters high. A minute before New Year's Day, a
brightly lighted ball is dropped slowly from the top of a
pole. As soon as the ball reaches the ground, it gives a
signal of New Year and everybody hugs and kisses
each other wishing Happy New Year. The event is
shown on television across the United States and around the world. The event has been held every year since 1907,
except during World War II.
December 31 is not a federal holiday, but it does fall in the holiday season at the end of the year. It is a holiday in some
states like Kentucky, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Most schools and other educational institutions throughout the United
States are closed. Some organizations are closed and others are open but offer limited services. Many stores are open
on New Year's Eve, but may close early. Many theatres, clubs and other entertainment venues have special programs. It
may be necessary to reserve tickets many weeks in advance.
Elsewhere, many of New Year parties in US have a dress code or a theme. People cover their faces with masks. They
unmask themselves only when the clock strikes 12. Many people watch television, eat black-eyed peas and rice called
Hoppin' Johns. There is also a tradition to open champagne bottles as the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve.
New Year's Day begins by wishing the near and dear ones 'Happy New Year'. People visit their loved ones and sometimes
go out for a picnic with them. Many people celebrate it by watching the famous Tournament of Roses Parade. The theme
of the parade varies every year. The parade is followed by thousands of programs - marching bands, dancing and singing
various songs. The queen of the tournament rides on a special float made from flowers. There is also a New Year custom
to play the most famous games of football such as the Orange Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl.

S tudy Abroad

Have you ever wanted to study abroad? Any hesitation about studying abroad is typically related to the cost. However,
what most students don’t know is that they can apply for their study abroad trip in addition to scholarships. In fact, for
some students, studying abroad can sometimes be cheaper than a traditional on-campus semester. What is more, this
possibility is an award for student to travel, develop their knowledge and meet different types of people. There are
several types of study abroad scholarships to apply for such as: student-specific, program-specific, destination-specific
and subject-specific. Here are some scholarships which students could choose from last year.
Kosciuszko Foundation Year Abroad in Poland Scholarship: It is a financial support from the
Polish Ministry of Education and Sport and the Kosciuszko Foundation for students to study and live in Poland for a
semester or year. You have the possibility to study Polish language, history, and literature at Jagiellonian University in
Krakow.
German Academic Exchange Service: It offers 9 different types of scholarships, grants, and fellowships
for study and research in Germany. You can choose from 3-week courses to full-year financial support for an academic
year abroad.
The Mexican National Bank: It provides special loans for students that want to do a postgraduate programme
in Mexico or in another country. FIDERH's loans are up to 200,000 pesos per year to study abroad. You can choose from
9 to 36 month programs. The Bank covers tuition, living expenses or medical insurance.
Department of Education Scholarship for Programs in China: It provides financial assistance to
students who are participating in the Chinese language programs. It is offered by Peking University (Beijing) , East
China Normal University (Shanghai) , Nanjing University, and National Chengchi University (Taipei) .
Japanese Studies Scholarships: This program offers students an opportunity to study Japanese language
and culture for one year in Japan. It is sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and
Technology (Monbukagakusho) .
Walter Jensen Scholarship for Study Abroad: It is offered for future French teacher to help pay a
semester or a year studying French abroad in an accredited program in any Francophone country.
