Mariposa County is known worldwide for the beauty of Yosemite National Park and the Sierra
Nevada Mountains, which form the backbone of the county. If one were to describe the
environment of Mariposa County it would include the beautiful shades of gray dressing the walls of
Yosemite, the color of the spring and fall, and the quiet blanket of snow that covers much of the
county during the winter. Recreational use of the entire county describes the activities commonly
enjoyed: Horseback riding on the ranches of the foothills, to the
hiking, river rafting, skiing, and bird watching; fishing; and general
enjoyment of one of the most unspoiled parts of California, for just a
few. Come visit us and
enjoy our county with us.

Mariposa County
Overview of Mariposa County
is home of the developed portions of Yosemite National
Park, a large agricultural area in the western quarter
devoted to livestock raising and a middle section of
residential, commercial and light industrial development. Mixed into the rangeland one will find vineyards,
olive groves and a mixture of small ranches, homes
and historic mining camps. The middle quarter of the
county stretches from Coulterville on the north to the
county seat of Mariposa in the middle, to the Madera
County line on the south. This segment of the county is
served by state Highway 49 which connects the majority of the historic mining camps. Cutting across the
county, dividing it in half from west to east, is the All
Year Highway to Yosemite, State Route 140. Access
the northern part of Mariposa County, State Route 132
also passes through many historic mining areas from
La Grange in Stanislaus County, to Don Pedro with its
two recreation lakes, a fine refurbished golf course,
many beautiful homes and recreation opportunities, on
to the l849 town of Coulterville. Coulterville has the reputation of being
one of the most
unspoiled gold
rush towns on the
Mother Lode.

Started in l854 was a newspaper that eventually became the Mariposa Gazette, oldest of weekly papers publishing in California.
Mariposa County was formed as the largest county in the new State
of California when admitted as a state in September of l850.
Covering almost 1/5th of the state, Mariposa County eventually
became divided into all or part of eleven counties. A large part of
Mariposa County began as a Mexican Land Grant purchased for
Col. and Mrs. John C. Fremont in l846. When gold was discovered,
Fremont’s Grant, located at the southern end of the Mother Lode,
became the destination for many early gold seekers. With the
granting of statehood in 1850, Mariposa County was formed. By
1851, the town of Mariposa became the county seat and by l854,
the handmade courthouse, still in use, was built (see photo at right).
It is now considered the courthouse of longest continuous use west
of the Mississippi River.

MUSEUMS
Coulterville
The Northern Mariposa County
History Center in Coulterville is
housed in the remains of the three-
Downtown Coulterville from the History Center
story Coulter Hotel. Destroyed in the
l899 fire, the ingenious citizens of
Coulterville rebuilt the upper-story
rooms for the collection and kept
the balance of the building for a garden. Included in the museum interior is the former drug store next door
where the fixtures are still in place
but provide the display for many
artifacts of a mining town.
Coulterville’s fine History Center
interprets the life of a mining camp
from the first days of a tent store
owned by George Coulter. First
given the name of Banderita, after
the little flag that flew above
Coulter’s store, the town was soon
named after Coulter the merchant.
The creek was named Maxwell honoring Coulter’s rival after a flip of a
coin. Downtown Coulterville, contained in one of the two historic districts in Mariposa County, is
anchored by the three-story Hotel
Jeffery, fully restored and available
on a daily basis. Many other gold
rush era buildings remain in spite of
a number of fires that decimated the
town. Coulterville has the reputation
of being one of the most unspoiled
historic mining camps in the Mother
Lode.
Mariposa
The county seat of Mariposa
County from 1851 on contains two
excellent museums. First the
Mariposa Museum and History
Center is one of the finest small
venues, which has both inside and
outside displays of artifacts of the
Gold Rush Era. The working stamp
mill, examples of mining equipment,
a collection of carriages and wagons, and a Native American area
are all in and around the main build-

Attached to the museum is a new archival vault, which
contains over 150 years of artifacts, papers and photographs. For availability and hours, call (209) 966-2924.
The California State Mining and Mineral Museum is
located at the Mariposa Fairgrounds, two miles south of
Mariposa on Hwy 49 S. In 1984, the state collection of
minerals, mining machinery and artifacts was moved to
Mariposa from the Ferry Building in San Francisco.
Within a few years, a permanent location was selected at
the Fairgrounds where the collection is secure and constantly improved. Operated by the State Department of
Recreation, this collection is frequently visited by schools
from all over the state, to study the broad collection of
mineral items found in California. The Gold exhibit is
without peer, featuring the Fricot
nugget, an approximately 13-pound
specimen of crystalline gold. To

BEAR VALLEY
Known through history as
Haydensville, Biddleville,
Simpsonville and Johnsonville, the
name changed along with the activity
in the mines and on the ranches.
Part of Col. John C. Fremont’s Las
Mariposas Mexican land grant, Bear
Valley became the home for the Col.
and Jessie Fremont for the period of
eighteen months. It was also near
two of the grant’s most significant
mines: the Pine Tree and Josephine
were located just north of town and
produced upwards of 4 million in gold
bullion. Located on Hwy 49 North,
the Golden Chain Highway, a number
of historic buildings and relics of the
past interest visitors.
BOOTJACK/LUSHMEADOWS/PON
DEROSA BASIN/ MARIPOSA PINES
This area east of the town of
Mariposa, and accessed by Hwy 49S
or Triangle Road off Hwy 140 on the
north, is a large basin primarily populated with rural homes with occasional sets of commercial establishment
common to the country setting. Small
county stores and very good restaurants are scattered near the main
roads. Subdivisions developed during
the l970’s are made of large parcels.
A few large ranches still exist with
livestock raising and wine grape
growing. Family gardens are a big
part of the rural life with some participating in local Farmers Markets.
CATHEYS VALLEY
Located along State Highway
140, halfway between Merced and
Mariposa, this community has always
been the heart of a broad ranching
area. Today mostly cattle range the
pasture, but in the past many goats,
hogs, horses and mules were raised
in the area. Small gardens raised
fresh vegetables for the mining communities a few miles distant. Catheys
Valley continues the ranching tradi-
tion interspersed with areas of modern homes on small ranchettes.
Always a close community, many
events center on family, school, 4H,
roping, barrel racing, and other traditional events of ranching life. Back
roads are fun to drive or bicycle, and
are not crowded. Stop, and listen to
the sounds of country.
HORNITOS
Mexican miners who built around
a well on a square began a real Wild
West town during the Gold Rush —
Hornitos. Many of the original buildings still survive.
A visit to Hornitos is truly a step
back into the l9th century. Famed
bandit Joaquin Murrieta, as well as
President U.S. Grant, stayed.
Murrieta came for the Fandango and
to break his gang out of jail, while
Grant visited and stayed at the longgone Hornitos Hotel. Hornitos has
many proud historic sites including
St. Catherine’s Church and

Mariposa County encompasses 931,200 acres; 452,384 acres of this land are publicly owned and occupied.
MARIPOSA
The town of Mariposa is the
county seat of Mariposa County. In
1851 when a flood and fire destroyed
the log cabin courthouse in Agua
Fria, the citizens decided to move the
county function to the new town of
Mariposa. Mariposa is an unusual
town for the Mother Lode as it was
properly laid out on a grid instead of
just following the creek. By 1854,
Mariposa County had a properly
handmade Courthouse, oldest of
continuous use west of the Rockies,
and a newspaper, the Mariposa
Gazette that has published weekly
since that first issue January 24,
l854. Mining and ranching were the
main industries in the county.
Because of the lack of water, placer
mining (that is along creeks and
rivers) lead to quartz or hard rock
underground mines. These mines
required a good deal of investment
and thus the miners worked for one
company or another rather than simply panning for gold. After the decline
of hard rock mining about the time of
Princeton Mine at Mt. Bullion
WWI, Mariposa relied on ranching
and lumber until State Highway 140
was constructed from Merced to the
gates of Yosemite, thus making
Mariposa a key stop along the All
Year Highway to Yosemite. Hwy 140
is the shortest and lowest-level route
directly into Yosemite Valley and its
construction made Yosemite National
Park accessible year around. Today
Mariposa retains the charm of a mining camp with many Gold Rush era
buildings, the California State Mining
and Mineral Museum, the Mariposa
Museum and History Center, as well
as the 1854 Court House and 1858
stone County Jail. Sprinkled throughout the town are more than 50 historic sites and buildings giving the
visitor an understanding of the passage of time in the Mother Lode.
Summer tours of the Courthouse
begin Memorial Day Weekend.
Mariposa is the commercial and
government center of Mariposa
County. A full range of goods and
services are available including the
John C. Fremont Hospital and Clinic,
Mariposa Indian Health and Dental
Clinic, Mariposa County High School,
Mariposa County Park with a swimming pool, tennis courts, amphithe-

Mariposa County Fairgrounds and
the administrative sites for Mariposa
County Government. A number of
lodging facilities, restaurants, shops,
shopping centers, goods and services are available. Nestled in the valley of the Mariposa Creek (River on
early maps), Mariposa is the home
of friendly people always willing to
stop and visit; make your stay an
experience you will remember.

Yosemite Area Communities
EL PORTAL
Once the terminus of the
Yosemite Valley Railroad, El Portal is
a community of employees for both
the Yosemite National Park and
Delaware North, the Park concessionaire. Located along the Merced
River, El Portal started in part as
Hennessey’s Farm, which was the
site of a number of summer gardens,
and orchards, which supplied fruits
and vegetables to the hotels in
Yosemite Valley as well as the mining and lumber camps in the area.
Produce was carried on the backs of
mules as far away as Bodie on the
east side of the Sierra. In 1906, El
Portal became the end of the
Yosemite Valley Railroad where the
Del Portal Hotel was built to accommodate visitors to Yosemite in style.
Passengers would leave the hotel
early in the next day after arrival for
a four-and-1/4-hour ride by wagon
and coach to Yosemite Valley over a
rough rocky road. After 1913, and
the advent of motor coaches, the
time to the valley was reduced to 1
hour and 1/4. El Portal continued to
be the site of hotels and stores associated with the railroad until National
Lead Company purchased the town
upon the discovery of a large barium
deposit nearby. Across the river to
the east near the community store,
an 1800 ft. incline railroad brought
Sugar Pine logs from the forests to
the river for inclusion in trains, which
took logs to the mill at Merced Falls,
many miles to the west.
Today, El Portal is a bedroom
community with a school, store, post
office, community hall, gas station, a
number of Park administrative
offices, fire station and nearby the
maintenance facilities of Yosemite
National Park. Just a short distance
toward the boundary of Yosemite
National Park is Yosemite View
Lodge, a major resort on the river,
and five miles west of El Portal is

one that rents Ford Model T automobiles for excursions into Yosemite
National Park. Fish Camp is the
home of the Tenaya Lodge, a 254room, full-service hotel which offers
quality experience and a large
events facility. Because of the elevation, Fish Camp receives abundant
snow in the winter. The village
boasts a general store and post
office.

Crown Jewel of the Park Service
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK
One of the crown jewels of the National Park
System, Yosemite National Park has been enjoyed by
visitors almost since the discovery by the Mariposa
Battalion. Lead by Col. James Savage, this militia from
Mariposa was very likely the first Europeans to enter
Yosemite Valley on March 24, l851. Few in the group
recognized the special nature of the valley and it was
some years later when one solder who was serving as
a medical aid, Lafayette Bunnell, wrote about the
event. Within five years, other Americans came to
Yosemite Valley to begin the development of resort
facilities and encouraging
visitation to view and
appreciate the marvels of nature. By 1863, development urged
the granting of Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Big
Trees to the State of California for the purpose of creating a
park. By 1890, at the insistence of John Muir, the area around
the valley and big trees was designated as a national park.
After a l903 meeting with John Muir and President Theodore
Roosevelt, the valley and big trees were added to the Park
making Yosemite National Park essentially the area that it is
today.
