SETBACK FOR KEENELAND'S LASIX-FREE RACE PLANS Kentucky attorney general finds KHRC lacked authority to allow Lasix-free races, which could hinder Keeneland's plans to conduct such events in 2016. Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin has a pair of Bernardini colts for the Dec. 26 Malibu Stakes MCLAUGHLIN: TWO FOR MALIBU By Evan Hammonds A successful trainer for 21 years, Kiaran McLaughlin has had only 13 starters at Santa Anita Park. Although none have won, he's taking a major run at the winner's circle Dec. 26 with a trio of Bernardini 3-year-olds in grade I races. He'll send out Stonestreet Stables' Cavorting in the seven-furlong La Brea for fillies followed by a pair of Godolphin rising stars in Marking and Watershed to face favorite Runhappy in the Malibu. Marking has been odds-on in both of his starts—both wins—and is the second foal out of multiple grade I winner Seventh Street. McLaughlin notes the colt had some gate issues this summer but is hopeful those are past him. In just his second career start Watershed finished fourth behind Runhappy in Saratoga's King's Bishop (gr. I) after he got off a bit slowly. "We have a lot of respect for Runhappy but hope we can pull an upset with either of ours," McLaughlin said. BH LADY SHIPMAN TO KIARAN MCLAUGHLIN Randall Lowe's turf sprint specialist will move from Kathleen O'Connell's barn to trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. NEW MEXICO RACING COMMISSION SEEKS NEW LEADER The New Mexico Racing Commission reported Dec. 23 it has begun a search for a new executive director to replace Vince Mares. Duke and classic winner Iron Liege. But perhaps the most versatile of the '54 class was Travis Kerr's Round Table. Bred by Claiborne Farm, Round Table was a durable (66 starts) son of Princequillo out of the royally bred (literally) Sir Cosmo mare Knight's Daughter. Round Table won three consecutive champion grass horse titles, was twice champion older horse, and added Horse of the Year in 1958. Round Table, on rail, defeats Seaneen in the Malibu Sequet Stakes While Round Table earned his reputaat Santa Anita Dec. 28, 1957 tion as a distance-loving horse (33 of his 43 wins came at eight furlongs or beyond), one of his best defeat Seaneen (114) by a head in 1:22. efforts was the seven-furlong Malibu Sequet Stakes at He parlayed racing prowess into a successful stud Santa Anita Dec. 28, 1957. Carrying 130 pounds and career, siring 83 stakes winners. He was leading U.S. making his 22nd start of the year, he came from fifth to sire in 1972. BH CASSE EXPECTS BIG THINGS FROM KAIGUN By Claire Novak T @BENOIT PHOTO rainer Mark Casse expects "big things" from multiple graded stakes winner Kaigun, seeking his first 2015 win in the Dec. 26 W.L. McKnight Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Gulfstream. The 5-year-old Northern Afleet gelding hit the board in all six starts this year and comes off a strong second in the Nov. 14 Red Smith Handicap (gr. IIIT). Joe Bravo rides from post 10 in a field of 12. "He's almost roly-poly; I call him my little butterball," Casse said. "He's not easy to get fit and ready. I think it's taken him a few starts to come back this year, but he's back at the top of his game. We're expecting big things from him. If there's no speed he can be on the lead, but we'll leave that up to Joe." Multiple graded stakes winner Da Big Hoss is the 120-pound highweight off a sixth in the Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT). Also on the card Goldy Espony heads the La Prevoyante Handicap (gr. IIIT) and Stonetastic faces Dogwood Trail in the Sugar Swirl (gr. III). I) finished fourth, 6 1/2 lengths back. But since that effort the Bernardini colt has won a Keeneland allowance race and delivered a workout pattern that seems well timed for his Malibu start. Watershed probably could benefit from being closer to the pace and on Nov. 19 and 26 offered hints of ability to do just that when he delivered speedy workouts at Palm Meadows for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. Watershed has added two more works since, including one at Santa Anita, and seems on target. Also worth noting is Watershed will carry the same 118 he toted in the King's Bishop while Runhappy adds six pounds from that effort to 123. The pick: $25 to win on Watershed (#3). Last week: Chalk Mor Spirit delivered for the win wager although the exacta plays missed the mark. Still a small profit as $25 wagered returned $34. For the year this column has earned $1,860.20 on $527.50 in wagers. BH ANNE M. EBERHARDT n paper Runhappy has everything you'd want as a favorite in the Dec. 26 Malibu Stakes (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park. James McIngvale's Runhappy has won five of six career starts, including four straight capped by a Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) score where the 3-year-old Super Saver colt defeated top older sprinters. Runhappy will face six other 3-yearolds in the Malibu, and his Equibase pace and speed figures stand out in this seven-furlong test. But Runhappy has a couple of factors against him. First of all, Breeders' Cup winners often are vulnerable in their first start after the World Championships. I suspect that after weeks or months of the connections' focus on winning the Breeders' Cup—as it should be—there is a "Now what?" moment afterward. In the case of Runhappy, it's most assuredly been a "Now what?" moment as a well-publicized falling out after Breeders' Cup saw trainer Maria Borell fired and racing manager Laura Wohlers (0-for-13 in graded stakes) take over his training. Beyond that, Runhappy will be running in Southern California for the first time and will change from jockey Edgar Prado to Gary Stevens. I don't mind selecting horses taking on new challenges but this list is too long for me to take Runhappy at a short price (6-5 morning line, and I suspect will be bet down.) Watershed is a horse who Runhappy will be 6-5 or lower in his first outing after winning the Breeders' Cup Sprint when he faced Runhappy in BLOOD-HORSE DAILY Download the FREE smartphone app THURSDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2015 PAGE 6 OF 10 RACE RESULTS SPONSORED BY ® WATCH RACE REPLAYS OF NORTH AMERICAN RACES BY CLICKING ON THE RACE NAME ALLOWANCE RESULTS Delta Downs, Race 8, ALW 12/23, $30,500, 2yo, f, 5f (dirt), :58.27, track muddy. 1–Brooke's a Bookin, 120, ch f, 2, Jonesboro–Orange Street, by Storm Boot, $18,300, O–Jess D.
