Daniel Pate Jr., MD Administrative Staff Jay Briley, President Sue Taylor, Vice President, Patient Care Services After a year of implementing several new projects, it is rewarding to look back on what the staff at Vidant Duplin Hospital has accomplished. We went live with our new Vidant Electronic Health Record (EHR) July 28, 2012. The months leading up to this launch were filled with planning and many hours of staff education. The transition was challenging, but our staff did a wonderful job of making the change virtually seamless. As a result, we are now linked to our entire system of care, and our patients benefit by Vidant EHR ensuring their health care providers are equipped with the critical information they need across multiple settings to provide the very best care. With the addition of Dr. Jon Kornegay, we have solidified our hospitalist program, a group of providers who specialize in the care of hospitalized patients. Other members of that team include Dr. Chad Kornegay, director of the Hospitalist Program at Vidant Duplin Hospital; Dr. Danny Pate; Doug Lamb, physician assistant; and Nurse Practitioners Brittany Outlaw and Lecia Reardon. We continue to focus on quality and are proud of the fact that in September 2012, The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America, named Vidant Duplin Hospital one of the nation’s Top Performers on Key Quality Measures. Vidant Duplin was one of 18 North Carolina hospitals– and the only N.C. hospital east of I-95–receiving this honor. Vidant Duplin was recognized for its achievement on measures that included heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. We have worked diligently to seek grant funds, and with Alex Asbun’s leadership, we were fortunate to receive $566,000 in 2012. The Golden Leaf Foundation and the North Carolina Rural Center awarded the hospital a combined $296,000 to use toward renovating our emergency department, which is slated to open in early 2013. We were awarded $245,000 by The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust to provide more coordinated care for mental health and substance abuse patients. The Vidant Health Community Benefit Grants Program awarded Vidant Duplin $25,000 to help the Duplin County Health Department conduct a community health needs assessment. Looking ahead, we are launching a telehealth program that will focus on managing and coordinating the care of chronically ill patients in our community. Patients participating in this program will include those with conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes. Participants will use equipment in the home to send information, such as daily blood pressure readings, to Vidant Health nurses to monitor. The goal is to keep patients as healthy as possible, to lower the number of hospital readmissions a patient may experience, and ultimately, to reduce an individual’s health care costs. Physician recruitment is key to our success and our main focus as we move forward. We have wonderful providers serving our community, and we need more. Our hospital team, along with Vidant Medical Group, is working tirelessly to attract more primary care providers and specialists to the area so that we can provide Duplin County and surrounding residents the health care resources they need, close to home.
