August 2008 Issue 8 CENTRAL MOTORCYCLE ROADRACING ASSOCIATION Team Mancuso Powersports and Desert-Mice Rule Hallett First Turn CMRA Members at Mid-Ohio CMRA members and former CMRA members carried the club banner at the AMA Superbike Championship Series at MidOhio. A week after setting a new lap record at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, Dane Westby raced to 12th place finishes in both the Supersport and Superstock races at Mid-Ohio. In addition, Cory West was seventh, Shea Fouchek was 14th and Danny Eslick was 28th in the Supersport race. Meanwhile in the Superstock race, Ben Thompson was 7th and Randall Kienast was 13th, two seconds behind Westby. In the Formula Xtreme race, Eslick finished 7th and Westby was 29th. In the Red Bull Rookies Cup race at MidOhio, Hayden Gillim won his first race of the series, beating Benny Solis, Jr. and Argentina’s Leandro Mercado. Hayden finished 3.3 seconds ahead of Solis. Austin Medrano finished 12th, Hayden’s brother, Frankie Lee, was 15th, while Garet Tomlinson was 23rd. Competition Number Reminder for Endurance Teams Please remember that you must run your correct, 2-digit endurance team number on your bike when racing endurance. If you use the same bike to compete in sprints and endurance, be sure to have the correct number on the bike. A number of teams were meatballed at Hallett requiring them to come in and correct the number on their bike. A couple of issues ago we told you about CMRA racer Ricky Parker and his famous dad, Trampas, who is a former two-time World Motocross Champion. In this issue we will talk to Clint Shobert whose father is Bubba Shobert, a former three-time AMA Grand National Dirt Track Champion and AMA Superbike Champion. Clint, a 17-year-old from down around Lubbock, got his first CMRA win at the Hallett race back in May and he has been winning consistently ever since. How long have you been road racing? Clint: I started road racing in April. I went to the Freddie Spencer School and rode with Freddie and that was the clincher, after that, I never want to stop. Did you do any other racing before that? Clint: I dirt tracked for about a month last 4 summer but I have always stuck to off-road and trail riding. I've always been a "dirt guy". I like riding the dirt and it gave me lots of experience with the rear wheel sliding around. Is your mom 100% behind your racing, too? Clint: Well, she's not 100% behind it but she supports it. You are probably too young to have seen your dad race. Clint: Yeah, but I've heard all the stories and people tell me how good he was and I just hope I can follow in the same footsteps. So does your dad do your mechanical work, too? Clint: Yeah, he does all the work on the bikes for me. He does everything a mechanic would do; I just call him dad instead of mechanic. Did that make you want to race? Clint: Yeah, that's my drive to want to do good. To do what he was doing. Does your dad give you advice? Clint: Yeah. We'll go out and practice and afterward he will tell me all the things he knows from experience that can help me. It really helps. Are you still in school? Clint: No, I graduated a year early so I could concentrate on racing. What are your goals? Clint: MotoGP is my dream. To be able to compete with the top guys: Ben Spies, Mat Mladin, and all the top guys. That's what I work for every time I step on the track. Interview Profile: Jess Johnson In the next several issues we will "get to know" some of our CMRA workers. Here is a quick profile of Jess Johnson. Duties with the CMRA: Electronic Timing and Scoring, BBS host/administrator. Time spent with CMRA: My first races were in 2000. Attraction to the CMRA: My attraction to the CMRA now is the friends I made while racing. Real job: I'm a unix sysadmin for Cisco. Bikes: I formerly raced an RS125, SV650, R6 and ZX6R. I raced three seasons on a NSR50 and won the class championship with STD racing. I had several bikes. Superhawks and a Mille on the street. Now I just pedal. Other hobbies: My other hobbies include aviation, firearms and scuba. Favorite thing about the CMRA: My favorite thing is a Saturday night at the track. Would change about the CMRA: I think the CMRA leaders are doing the best job with what they have. CMRA Championship Series: Round 7 July 27, 2008 Hallett Motor Racing Circuit Hallett, OK Photos by Barry Nichols Dane Westby, Dustin Dominguez and Cory Burleson dominated the action at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Hallett, Oklahoma, for round seven of the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association's championship series. On a hot and humid weekend, the trio accounted for eight expert wins and a new lap record for the counter-clockwise direction on Hallett's undulating 1.8-mile course. Had Westby not missed the call for one of his races he might have ended the day with four wins, but instead, the Tulsa native wound up with wins in the South Central Race Center C Superstock Expert race, the Northwest Honda Formula 1 race and the Island Racing Services C Superbike Expert race. Westby also posted a record-breaking 1:15.571 on his GSX-R1000 in the Formula 1 race, a race he won by 10 seconds over Westby Racing teammate Dustin Meador. Westby's record lap eclipsed Ty Howard's old mark of 1:16.149 set this time last year. Meanwhile, Dominguez finished off a successful day of racing by taking wins in the Exel Transportation Formula 2, Raceworx A Superstock Expert and the D Superbike races. Despite crashing in the Formula 1 race, Arkansas rider Cory Burleson also had a good weekend, taking wins in the Liberty Motorsports Park B Superstock Expert, and Team Mancuso Powersports B Superbike Expert races. In one of the tightest races of the day, Westby and Dominguez went head to head in the C Superstock race, a thriller which was decided by a mere .001 seconds, with Westby getting the upper hand. Westby also beat Kansas City's Matt Hall to the line by five seconds to win the C Superbike race. One of the most exciting races of the day was in the GMAN Racing 125 GP race, which saw three different riders vying for the lead. Conner Blevins, who was riding with his foot in a cast, took the early lead but was pushed hard by fellow Honda RS125 riders Austin Medrano and Garet Tomlinson. On lap two, Medrano took the lead but was soon passed by Tomlinson, who was also riding in great pain after severely injuring his foot at a recent Red Bull Rookies Cup race. On lap four, Medrano went down, moving Blevins back into second; however, a lap later, Tomlinson crashed on the fastest section of the course, handing the lead back to Blevins. Blevins ended up with the win, while another Honda rider, Mike Sweeney, finished second. 7 Sprints Blevins also added wins in the Clubman class and the Super Motard class. Meanwhile, Eric Falt and Robert Marsh each posted two wins on the day. Falt laid claim to wins in the E Superstock and Lightweight Twins divisions, while Marsh topped the Classic Unlimited and Formula 40 Lightweight classes. Falt also battled with Brandon Spradling for the win in the Sonic Springs D Superbike race but Spradling took the win by just over a second over Falt. Van Blaylock claimed his fourth-straight win in the Heavyweight Twins class, but still trails Ronnie Hay in the class standings by 15 points. Hay finished second at Hallett behind Blaylock with Ryan Warren finishing third on a Triumph Daytona 675. Dewayne Davis won the CompuCrew Fomula 40 Heavyweight, edging Darnell Dorsey to the line by 0.278 seconds. According to Dorsey, "we made our fastest laps ever in that race." Danny Dominguez, who was riding with half a clutch lever and a bent shifter after crashing in the race before, was third. Meanwhile, Randy Stamps, who was making his first race weekend back after nearly 10 years, won the F40 Heavyweight Novice division. In other Novice races, Jeremy Kidd ended up with three wins: B Superstock, A Superbike and B Superbike. The B Superstock race was a squeaker over Clint Shobert (son of three-time AMA Grand National Champion Bubba Shobert) by 0.145 seconds. Robert Duncan had three wins: D Superstock, Unlimited Motard and D Superbike. Meanwhile Shobert won the prestigious Moto Liberty C Superstock race and Cecil Keeling ran away with the equally important WINN Racing Formula 1 race. In other races, Tryg Westby won the Ridesmart Lightweight Twins race, James Keenan won A Superstock, Ryan Warren won Heavyweight Twins, Aaron Gore won Formula 2, Lori Miller won Formula 40 Lightweight, and Brandon Cleland won C Superbike. In Saturday's Mini Sprint races, Stephen Guynes dominated the Formula 4 race, winning by an 11-second margin, with Roger Albert taking the F6 win, beating Austin Gore by a large margin. In the F5 race, Derek Wagnon beat Jeffrey Martin and Roger Albert to the line to take the win, and Austin Gore claimed the win in the F7 class over Brandon Altmeyer and Joey Howells. Lane Magnus won the Creative automation & Design/H&H Communications Junior Motard race with Ana Arthur taking second. 8 Above: Robert Duncan won the Unlimited Motard race. Shogun Motorsports Endurance Series: Round 5 July 26, 2008 Hallett Motor Racing Circuit Hallett, OK Photos by Barry Nichols Team Mancuso Powersports Racing (pictured above) claimed its second win in a row at round five of the Shogun Motorsports Endurance Series, a five-hour race held in the Oklahoma heat at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit. With only Dane Westby and Dustin Meador sharing the riding duties, the GSX-R1000- mounted team led all 219 laps and finished five laps ahead of second place finishers Moto Ace Racing (1st in C Superbike). "Dane got a fast start and pretty much led from the get-go," said Meador after the event. "His fastest time was a 17.1 (a 1:17.124 on lap four, to be exact), so he made it easy on me. I just got out there and tried to maintain the gap over Moto Ace and we just tried to be steady the whole race since it was just the two of us. We just wanted to make sure we made it to the end since it was so hot." The heat was indeed a factor as teams tried various strategies, including shortening up their stint times, to combat the 100-plus degree temperatures that had moved into the area on race day. One saving grace was the fact that Race Director Walter Walker moved the race from the afternoon to the morning to help matters and it really didn't get excessively hot until the last few hours of the race. With the win, Team Mancuso Powersports Racing (Paul Wilkinson, Craig Clark, Chris Romeo, Dane Westby, Dustin Meador) moved into second overall in the series standings, ahead of GMAN Racing. However, Moto Ace Racing (Richard McFarland, Joe Prussiano, Cory Burleson, Derek Wagnon, Scott Foster) still maintains the lead in the overall standings - aided by their secondplace finish at Hallett - and leads Team Mancuso Powersports Racing by 221 points 11 Endurance Series Above: Moto Ace Racing finished second overall. Riding a GSX-R600, Moto Ace Racing passed CS Carey Racing (Chris Carey, Gus Carey, Greg Anderson, Matt Hall, Mike Murray) and Lone Star Track Days (Mark Niemi, Gabe McClendon, Andrew Galindo, Brad Kelly) during the first hour to move into second overall, a position they held until the finish. "Our bike was running hot, it overheated during the first hour," said Moto Ace Racing's Derek Wagnon. "We ran top five during the first hour, but we were able to go longer before pitting then everyone else and we made up a lot of ground. We were able to get about an hour and five minutes out of each stint." D2 Cycles (Dean Thimjon, Jason Swan, Kurt Stock, Brent Wood, John Deuser) finished the day in third overall and first in the Formula 1 class on a GSX-R1000, and other than the start, the race went pretty smooth. "The race went really good for us, but our start wasn't so good," said Kurt Stock of D2 Cycles. "We started eighth on the grid and we were about 20th in turn one after Dean decided to check out how well the bike could wheelie - three times. So not the best start, but Dean was able to make it up and we were in good position after the first hour." "Our lap times fell off a little bit in the end, because of the heat," added Stock. "But all of our guys ran consistently fast times and we were able to work our way up to a podium finish." Carey Racing held on for fourth overall and second in the C Superbike class, while Tucker Rocky (Ricky Parker, Todd Fleeman, Dustin Doucet) claimed the C Superstock win with a fifth overall finish. Faltless Racing (Eric Falt, Robert Bradlaw, Chuck Ergle, Bill Erzal, Clayton Schutz) added yet another win to their resume in the Formula 2 division with a 14th overall finish, despite the fact that team member Clayton Schutz went down just before the finish. Faltless Racing now holds a commanding lead in the F2 standings, with 385 points to spare over 1TooMuchSpeed.com. With three rounds still remaining on the schedule, Moto Ace Racing holds a comfortable lead in the overall standings, however, Team Mancuso Powersports Racing is on a roll and can make the race for the title close if things continue like they have the last two rounds. Below: Tucker Rocky was fifth. 13 Mini Endurance Desert-Mice Top Hallett Shogun Motorsports Formula Mini Endurance Series: Round 5 July 26, 2008 Hallett Motor Racing Circuit Hallett, OK Photos by Barry Nichols With Stephen Guynes and Jeff Mendelson sharing the riding duties, Desert-Mice (pictured above), rode a RSF150R to the overall win at round five of the Shogun Motorsports Formula Mini Endurance at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit. After trailing Excel Racing during the first hour, Desert-Mice (Stephen Guynes, Jeff Mendelson, Troy Green, Bill Hirstius) finished the two-hour race with a full lap to spare, as Excel Racing dropped off the pace and settled for second, some 37 seconds ahead of third-place finishers GMAN Racing 2. "Dustin [Dominguez] was flying on that EX250, backin' it in everywhere," said Guynes. "I decided to just sit back and watch him, since he couldn't ride the whole race by 14 himself and Conner Blevins is out with a broken foot. So we just ran consistent lap times and eventually everything fell into place for us." "We got lucky and the bike didn't break," added Guynes. "We ran a clean race, plus we were able to run the entire race on one tank." "We got a good lead on them during the first hour," said Excel Racing's Dominguez. "And I was going to run an hour and 45 minutes but we had a little confusion with our pit board and I came in early. It was just a little bit of bad luck." The win was the third for Desert-Mice so far this season and gives them a bit of breathing room in the series standings, with a slim 33point lead over GMAN Racing 2. Since Blevins was out with his foot injury, Dominguez and Alex Humphries carried the load for Excel Racing, riding a KTM SX85 to their third podium finish of the season. GMAN Racing 2 (Garet Tomlinson, Harry Tomlinson, Bill Syfan, Jake Lewis, Ryan Andrews) also relied on just two riders, Garet Tomlinson and Bill Syfan. And the duo finished third overall on an ill-running Honda RS85, although Tomlinson wasn't up to par either after suffering an injury to his foot at a recent Red Bull Rookies Cup race. Hambone (Charles Ergle, Keith Hertell, Eric Falt, Jess Foltz) finished fourth overall on a EX250, with Highlands Kawasaki Mini (Carson Wieland, Corbin Wieland, Steven Skobel) taking fifth on a KX85. Bit-Pulse (Dennis Foster, Sha Edwards, Larry Myers) claimed their first win of the series in the F5 class with a ninth overall finish on an Aprilia RS50, while 3-Musketeers Racing (Brandon Altmeyer, Joey Howells, Austin Gore, Cristian Esparza) remained undefeated in the F7 division with a 17th overall finish. Meanwhile, JSK Racing (James Selman, Stephen Selman, Kevin Weaver, Luke Conlin) claimed the win in the F6 class in 11th overall and moved ahead of KSDS (Pat Brown, Chris Reed, David Taylor, Richard Eads), who finished second in class and 14th overall, for the lead in the class standings.
