ecoPortal case study - Christmas Island Phosphate
Christmas Island Phosphate uses ecoPortal to maintain a robust environmental management system ecoPortal makes CIP’s complex environment management system simple and easy to use Andrew Hill - consultant to Christmas Island Phosphate Delicate environmental issues The majority of Christmas Island is national park and is home to many threatened species. The mining operation is located in an ecologically important environment with processing and shiploading facilities located within the main settlement. This brings complex social and environmental issues that must be dealt with effectively to ensure that mining is sustainable. A comprehensive approach Christmas Island Phosphates engaged Range to Reef Environmental to help address their situation. Andrew Hill of Range to Reef Envionmentalstarted by developing an environmental management plan (EMP), and then implemented a revised environmental management system (EMS) using ecoPortal. This project involved 4 key steps: 1 A risk assessment to identify potential risks, existing controls and prioritised actions, 2 Development of a revised EMP to meet legislative requirements and company aspirations, 3 A review of management systems against ISO 14001 and assessment of options for improving compliance, record keeping, reporting, data management, monitoring and audit and review processes, 4 Implementation a new EMS using ecoPortalwith ongoing support to rationalise and improve records management, monitoring, reporting and improved internal engagement and communication on environmental matters. A robust solution Engaging with Range to Reef Environmental and ecoPortalhas resulted in: • A new management framework to minimise impacts on the island's environmental and community values, • Addressed legal and regulatory requirements, • New environmental systems introduced to progressively improve company operations, • Increased staff engagement, awareness of environmental management and company responsibilities, • Simplification of processes, plans, procedures and forms, • Improved records and document management and quality control.
