Uber Writes Letter to the State Transport Minister US-based online taxi-booking app Uber has questioned Karnataka government’s new regulations for ride-hailing apps, terming them as “regressive” and “practically impossible to comply”. It had written a letter to state Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, saying a few mandatory clauses like keeping a fleet of a minimum of 100 taxis, generating printed receipts and capping of charges are “unfortunately redundant and similar to the radio taxi scheme introduced by Karnataka way back in 1998”. The mandatory clauses “are regressive in nature and not in line with our business model.” Uber, which competes with the likes of Ola and Meru in India, requested the minister’s intervention on the matter. www.cityhilights.news DENGUE CAUSING SICKNESS AND A HOLE IN THE POCKET Most corporate hospitals do not adhere to the price cap fixed by the blood transfusion council, charging exorbitant prices for both single and random donor platelets. The high cost of platelet transfusion for critical dengue cases has become a huge burden on patients. According to the guidelines set by the National and State Blood Transfusion Council, the cost of single-donor platelets (SDP) cannot exceed Rs 11,000 per unit and random donor platelets (RDP) cannot exceed Rs 600 per unit. Metro rail corridors in Bengaluru will support 10,000 new saplings. In the second phase of its forestation drive, trees will be planted along the Metro corridors wherever space is available like road edges where no further development is planned. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has promised to plant 10 saplings for every tree it cut for the mega infrastructure project. ists and tree officers on a High Court order. RDP is obtained by separating platelets from whole blood and SDP is exclusive platelet donation. Generally milder cases can be managed by RDP. A protocol by the state government too puts a cap on transfusion costs. SDP is capped at Rs 13,000 and RDP at Rs 850 per unit. The Chagaletti Makkala Granthalaya (Chagaletti Children’s Library), ‘a library of the kids, by the kids and for the kids’, was set up as part of the Chagaletti Child Rights Trust, which marked a decade on Tuesday. When most of the children of their age were busy figuring out life, Shalini CV, Meghana CV, Vedashree CK, Vanishree CK, Manasa V and Karthik N decided to look beyond. No sooner they got an opportunity to become child rights activists and associate themselves with the trust, these change makers chalked out a plan. As a result, the total cost of treatment can run into several lakhs which is becoming a huge burden on patients and their families. Recently, a 38-year-old man suffering from dengue was charged close to Rs 4 lakh at a private hospital on Old Airport Road and the cost of just four units of platelet transfusion came The state has been facing a severe shortage of platelet units for years now and the need is very high especially during this season. This could be one of the reasons why hospitals have been pushing up the cost. Dr Murali Kumar, chief of casualty, Chinmaya Mission Hospital, said: “When a patient’s platelet count drops, there is an increased risk of nose or internal bleeding. Usually, if the platelet count is below 20,000 then the patient could be at an increased risk of bleeding. Mostly, we do not take the risk, but transfuse platelets as soon as the count goes below 40,000. In most critical cases such as the dengue shock syndrome, transfusion of single donor platelet is a must.” As many as 21,049 saplings were planted for 2,500 trees axed for Namma Metro’s 42.3-km first phase, according to the BMRCL and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).. The BMRCL’s first phase of plantation drive is being analysed by a committee of environmental- To begin with, space has been identified at Peenya, Jalahalli, Magadi Road and Mysuru Road Metro stations. The BMRCL is picking native tree species from ‘The Flowering Trees of Bangalore’, a book written by Kartikeyan S, chief naturalist at the government-run Jungle Lodges and Resorts. But the drive hasn’t been taken seriously. Although the court has appointed a committee, it seems more of a “symbolic” act. The saplings were planted “for the heck of it”, Prof T V Ramachandra from the Centre for Ecological Sciences, IISc, who is in the committee, said. Plantation was done at abrupt places like atop drains and near roofs. Most of the trees planted were actually exotic shrubs. In depots where the BMRCL claimed to have planted 3,500 saplings, there were just 1,280 trees, he added. The committee has prepared a survey report and will submit it in a week or two. A senior official in the Horticulture Department also questioned the green cover. “For a sapling, at least 1-2 metre of space is needed. When it grows, a tree needs 5x5-foot space. So going by the arithmetic, over 20,000 acres of Bengaluru should have been greened. But we do not see even 10,000 acres,” the official said. Environmentalist Yellappa Reddy also questioned the plantation drive and said the greenery as claimed by the BMRCL wasn’t visible. Mangaluru University had planned to launch thirteen new courses in PG,UG, diploma and correspondence from the academic year 2016-17. For six years, these ambassadors of child rights have been promoting education with a difference by encouraging children to read. But most corporate hospitals seem to be cashing in on the epidemic and making huge profits. Even while the government has been making tall claims about keeping the situation under control, there is absolutely no monitoring done to keep a check on fixing the prices for each unit of platelets. Hospitals are charging anywhere between Rs 13,000 and Rs 26,000 for a single unit of SDP, and Rs 850 and Rs 6,000 for RDP. In a statement after a report suggested that the panel probing to find the missing files related to Ishrat Jahan case “tutored” a witness, Chidambaram said to the media “comprehensively exposed the fake controversy” created by the NDA government on the two affidavits filed by the central government in the case. “The moral of the story is that even a doctored report (of the Inquiry Officer) cannot hide the truth. The real issue is whether Ishrat Jahan and three others were killed in a genuine encounter or a fake encounter. Only the trial of the case, pending since July 2013, will bring out the truth,” he said. Home Ministry Additional Secretary B K Prasad led one-man inquiry committee on Wednesday submitted its report where it said that four of the five missing documents continue to be untraceable. The panel said that as per the then Joint Secretary, the papers were part of the file which went to his seniors but not found when the file returned to him. Chidambaram was the Home Minister then. The Congress leader said the news report completely vindicated the position that he had taken on the two affidavits. The first affidavit (August 6, 2009) disclosed the “intelligence inputs” that had been shared by the central government with the state government. Chidambaram said Judge S P Tamang in his report (September 7, 2009) found that Ishrat Jahan and three others had been killed in a “fake encounter”. “The report caused an uproar in Gujarat and else- Despite the international crude oil prices are down, the government is increasing their own taxes. NCP leader Nawab Ma- lik, who was commenting on the hike in prices of petrol and diesel, said the government is going on increasing taxes despite the falling prices in the international market. “There was a slogan given by Mr. Modi ‘Bahaut hui mehengai ki maar, ab ki bar Modi sarkaar’. “The prices of vegetables and pulses are going high. When Modi had taken the charge, dal prices were somewhere around 77 rupees. Today it has increased to more than 200 rupees. What is the government doing? Is this ‘ache din’?” he asked. Diesel price has been hiked by one rupee 26 paise a litre and petrol by just 5 paise including the VAT. The new rates came into effect last midnight. KAMAL NATH’S RESIGNATION APT TO DIVERT ATTENTION FROM ‘OLD WOUNDS’ OF 1984 RIOTS: CONGRESS The Congress on Thursday came to the rescue of senior party leader Kamal Nath after he resigned as the in-charge of Punjab affairs and said that it was necessary to divert the people’s attention from ‘old wounds’ of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots to the prevailing issues at present. Stating that the 1984 riots, which was a stigma on the nation, should never have taken place, Congress leader Ashwani Kumar said Kamal Nath’s resignation is a right step. “The party has accepted his resignation, not because Kamal Nath is guilty but because one shouldn’t reopen old wound. We captured one and found it to be a man-eater. We have now sent the lion to Sakkarbaug Zoo. We have decided to capture the entire pride and shift them. Till now, we have captured 13 lions and kept them in a rescue centre. A scat analysis will be conducted there,” A.P. Singh, Chief Conservator of Forest (Junagadh division) told media. He further said that out of the 17 lions captured by them last month, one was a male adult, and it turned out to be the main culprit. “We found considerable amount of human remains in that lion’s faeces, while very small amount was found from the faeces of two subadult females. It brought us to the conclusion that the ate humans, while two other sub-adults only ate some leftover body parts. These sub-adults were not involved in attacking and killing humans, as they only ate the leftover parts,” said Singh. Singh added the male lion would be kept in a cage at the zoo for its entire life on the outskirts of Junagadh city, while the two lionesses would be kept locked in any of forest department’s rescue centre. “All the three lions have to spend their lives in captivity now. Lyrics in Canadian Anthem to go Gender Neutral Canadian lawmakers voted on Wednesday to alter the country’s national anthem to make the lyrics gender neutral, a move that comes as the new Liberal government focuses on being more inclusive toward women. Some Conservative lawmakers opposed the change, which they said was being made without adequate consultation with Canadians. The former Conservative government suggested changes to the anthem’s lyrics in 2010, but backed off after a public outcry. The song was composed in 1880 and the original lyrics were in French. The English-language version, which is not a direct translation from French, was penned in 1908 and tweaked over the years. It was adopted as Canada’s official anthem in 1980. Noor Zahi Salman told the FBI that she was with him when he bought ammunition and a holster and she once drove him to the gay nightclub, Pulse, because he wanted to scope it out, a report in the NBC News quoted several officials familiar with the case as saying. 30-year-old Salman, Mateen’s second wife, told federal agents that she tried to talk her husband out of carrying out the attack, the news website said. The report said authorities are considering filing criminal charges against Salman for failing to tell them what she knew before the brutal attack but no decision has been made. Officials said Salman is cooperating with investigators. Early Sunday, the 29-year-old Mateen opened fire at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, leaving 49 people dead and 53 wounded, the worst mass shooting in modern US history. Federal prosecutors have convened a grand jury to investigate Mateen’s wife seeking to charge her as an accessory to 49 counts of murder and 53 counts of attempted murder as well as with failure to notify law enforcement about the pending terrorist attack and lying to federal agents, a federal law enforcement source told Fox News. L a w enforcement officials said Salman accompanied Mateen on trips to scout potential targets, though it is unclear how much she knew about his intentions, it said. Salman told investigators that Mateen shared his plans with her to carry out an attack and the shooter may have even called her from the gay club Pulse during the slaughter, a source told Fox News. US Senator Angus King, who as a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee was briefed on the investigation, told CNN that “it appears she (Salman) had some knowledge of what was going on, visiting some of the other sites.” “We don’t know whether she was involved and knew about the purchase of the guns, which took place only about a week before the attack. But she definitely is, I guess you would say, a person of interest right now and appears to be cooperating and can provide us with some important information on who this guy is, what his motivations were and what his plans were,” King said. Earlier, Mateen’s former wife Sitora Yusufiy had said that he himself might have been gay but chose to hide his true identity out of anger and shame. Yusufiy said in media reports that her ex-husband had told her that he frequented nightclubs before their marriage, but that he did not tell her they were gay clubs. AP SOUTH KOREA HOLDS NAVY DRILL NEAR BORDER South Korea on Thursday kicked off a live-fire naval exercise near its disputed sea border with North Korea , a move likely to fan already elevated military tensions with Pyongyang. The three-day exercise in the Yellow Sea is aimed at practising responses to simulated incursions by North Korean vessels and aircraft, the South’s navy said in a statement. The manoeuvres will involve 20 naval ships, including an Aegis destroyer, as well as 10 aircraft including anti-submarine helicopters. “If the enemy commits provocative acts again in the Yellow Sea, we are prepared to act swiftly, precisely and sufficiently in order to turn the site of provocation into their own tombs,” the navy statement said. The two Koreas fought bloody naval battles near the sea border known as the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in 1999, 2002 and 2009. The North refuses to recognise the NLL, which was drawn unilaterally by the US-led United Nations Command at the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. In 2010, South Korea blamed North Korea for the sinking of one of its warships near the Yellow Sea border, in which 46 sailors died. Live-fire drills in the area invariably spark an angry reaction from the North. Cross-border tensions have been running high ever since North Korea conducted its fourth nuclear test in January and a long-range rocket launch the following month. COAI CONTESTS TRAI ON DIFFERENTIAL DATA PRICING book’s FreeBasics, which offered free access to select websites for subscribers of Airtel and Reliance Communications, respectively. Net neutrality activists had rallied against the move. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has written to the telecom regulator, asking it to reconsider the ban on differential data pricing rules. The lobby group argues differential data pricing was allowed for years and there is no evidence to suggest any harm to anyone by offering these. COAI has also said the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) had “inadvertently mixed up unrestricted physical or technical access with non-discriminatory commercial access”. In February, Trai had banned operators from offering data at differential prices. The ruling was in response to the criticism on Airtel Zero and Face- The department of telecom has asked Trai for a pre-consultation paper on net neutrality that encompasses all the principles. Net neutrality activists say by creating a platform offering free access to select websites, telcos would be shaping consumer preferences and behaviour towards free data. COAI also contends pric- ing innovation has played a key role in the sector’s evolution and allowed rates to stay low. As differential pricing is allowed in voice, messaging and value added services, these should be allowed for data as well. Pricing flexibility is a core tenet of marketing and innovation. Citing the need to give consumers lower prices for products/services of their choice, COAI has argued that customers do not understand megabytes and gigabytes. Therefore, to offer data prices only around megabytes and gigabytes is not consumer friendly. Also, says COAI, even globally, forbearance on rates has been considered the best regulation. CITY Friday, June 17, 2016 HILIGHTS Vol 1, Issue 168 `.1.00/- www.cityhilights.news SPORTS BUSINESS INDIA TROUNCE ZIMBABWE BY 10 WICKETS (this match) and Ambati Rayudu -- got a decent hit in the middle. The entire middle-order -- skipper himself, Kedar Jadhav, and Manish Pandey (two balls) -- did not get a chance to bat, thanks to the impressive effort by the bowlers led by Jasprit Bumrah with 9 wickets from 3 games. A dominant India predictably completed a 3-0 whitewash by bulldozing a sub-par Zimbabwe by 10 wickets in the final ODI cricket match in what turned out to be one of the most one-sided series in recent times. Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s boys outclassed the hosts in all departments by first bowling them out for their lowest total of 123 in the series with Jasprit Bumrah grabbing 4/22 and then romping home in 21.5 overs. Openers KL Rahul (63 not out) and debutant Faiz Fazal (55 not out) flayed with what seemed like a club-level bowling attack to guide India home. India also completed a hat-trick of whitewashes against the hosts, having won earlier ODI series by 5-0 and 3-0 margin in 2013 and 2015 when Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane led the sides respectively. For Dhoni, there were two milestones that he achieved from the series. With 107 wins as captain, he equalled Allan Border for the second highest number of wins in ODI history behind Ricky Ponting (165). Also he became the first Indian wicketkeeper-batsman to complete 350 dismissals in 50-overs cricket. However, there wasn’t much else to draw from the three matches as it was one rare series where only four batsmen -- namely openers Rahul, Karun Nair, Fazal The nature of the contest has been of very poor quality as there was only one team which had its foot on the pedal. While chasing, Rahul enjoyed the pedestrian bowling attack helping himself to a half-century, his second 50 plus score after a hundred on debut while old domestic warhorse Faiz Fazal celebrated his maiden India cap with a polished knock. With only 124 to get, the Indian openers did not need to take any risks yet scored runs at a quick clip to finish off the formalities with minimum fuss. Left-handed looked elegant as he hit a few gorgeous shots through the cover as well as back past the bowler. Fazal lifted skipper and leg-spinner Graeme Cremer for a straight six. While Fazal’s innings had seven fours and a six in 61 balls, Rahul was more partial towards the cut shot and he also hit some cover drives. When Cremer tried to flight the ball, the Mangalore-lad was quick to pounce on it hitting him into the sightscreen for a six. He hit another six off Chamu Chibhabha over long-on. In all, he hit four boundaries and two sixes in 70 balls. The century stand came in 113 balls while Fazal finished the match with a pulled boundary. Rahul finished the series with 196 runs from three innings that had a century and a half-century. PTI Fazal Although France were in possession throughout the match, they still struggled hard to open their account. After a goalless first half, France finally manage to break the deadlock via striker Griezmann’s header in the last minute of the match before Payet struck a stoppage-time curler to hand the hosts with a second consecutive win in the tournament. France, who are currently leading the point table, began their quest for a maiden Euro title in 16 years with a battling 2-1 win over Romania, Sport24 reported. Meanwhile, Albania, who lost their opening game against Switzerland, have to beat Romania in their next match in order to stand any chance of qualifying. (ANI) ILYA ILYIN AMONG FOUR OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS Four Olympic weightlifting champions from Kazakhstan, including the sport’s most celebrated figure Ilya Ilyin, are among 10 lifters to have tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs at the London 2012 Olympics after their samples were reanalysed. Ilyin, the men’s 94kg gold medallist, and three women champions, Zulfiya Chinshanlo (53kg), Maiya Maneza (63kg) and Svetlana Podobedova (75kg), failed tests, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) said on Wednesday. The 10 lifters, who include seven London medallists in total and a current world champion who were expected to be medal con- tenders at the Rio de Janeiro Games in August, have all been provisionally suspended, the IWF said. Double Olympic champion Ilyin, 28, is to weightlifting what Usain Bolt is to athletics. He has nearly 400,000 followers on social media far more than anyone else in the sport and has been named male weightlifter of the year four times. A winner of the sport’s leading accolade in 2005, 2006, 2014 and 2015, fourtime world champion Ilyin is a national hero and also a personal friend of Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev. His victory in London followed his triumph in Beijing in 2008. A multiple world record holder, he was confident of winning a third gold, at 105kg, in Rio. Ilyin, who turned vegetarian and took a break from competition after the London Games, set his latest world records at the President’s Cup in Moscow in December. He had never failed a test before. Of the Kazakh women gold medallists, Chinshanlo, in 2012, and Podobedova, 2010, are both former IWF female weightlifters of the year. Don’t think my daughter (15-month old Ziva) still recognizes me. I will make my daughter feel that I am her dad and spend time with family,” the skipper said with his tongue firmly in cheek. On a serious note, he was satisfied with the effort put in by the bowlers, who dismissed Zimbabwe in all the three ODIs -- 168 (49.5 overs), 126 (34.3 overs) and 123 (42.2 overs) respectively -- and then chased down the total with consummate ease. “I think the execution has been really good, and that’s the key factor. The fast bowlers and the spinners have taken wickets at some point of time and put pressure on the opposition, so I am happy with the bowling performance,” Dhoni said after the match. “I don’t mind winning games easily, that’s what you are supposed to do. It would have been nice if a few of the other batsmen would have had a break. PTI ALWAYS KNEW I’VE THE ABILITY TO DO WELL: RAHUL The only Indian batsman to get a chance to shine in the lop-sided ODI series against Zimbabwe, opener Lokesh Rahul today said he always knew he had the ability to do well in every format. The 24-year-old from Karnataka, who amassed 196 runs in the series from three innings which included an unbeaten century and a half-century, was adjudged the Player of the Match and the Man of the series. “I always knew I had the game to do well in every format. It was just a matter of time. The last couple of months have been really good,” said Rahul, who cracked an unbeaten 63 off 70 balls today to guide India to a 3-0 whitewash of Zimbabwe. na Shkermankova (69kg). 7 BREAK WILL HELP MY DAUGHTER RECOGNISE HER DAD: DHONI GRIEZMANN, PAYET’S LATE STRIKES FIRE FRANCE INTO EURO 2016 KNOCKOUTS Antoine Griezmann netted a late goal before Dimitri Payet added second in injury time as hosts France secured their place in the last 16 of the European Championship with a 2-0 win over Albania in their second Group A clash in Marseille on Thursday. English Daily “I got the opportunity to play for RCB and then getting a call up to play for India has always been a dream. And then to come out here and perform the way I have is really pleasing. Rahul gave credit to the bowlers, who came up with a stupendous performance in the series. “Lot of credit goes to our bowlers for making our job easy. I knew I could go out there, take my time and play proper cricketing shots and not get carried away,” he said. “ O b viously after getting the h u n d re d and when you are in good form, it is easy to go out there and try to hit sixes and finish the game early. So it was a challenge for me to remain calm and play my natural game and give the ball and the bowlers the respect. That was the plan for me and I am happy the way I batted in this series,” he added. Rahul is the only player in the side, who will be touring West Indies along with India’s Test squad next month but Rahul said he is not thinking about it now. Asked if it would be easy to switch to the Test mode, Rahul said:”I don’t know, once I go there and see the red ball swinging, I will know. Obviously playing here, the ball is swinging a bit but it is not like the red ball. I am not thinking about West Indies yet. “What’s on my mind right now is to switch to the T20 format, to prepare for the next two days and come out all guns blazing,” he said. Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer said failure to rotate the strikes by the batsmen affected his team’s chances of posting a good total on board. “We didn’t see through the new ball to put up 260270 which we thought was par. We got stuck in middle period, and then lost grip. We just couldn’t rotate strike, and that put pressure on our batsmen,” he said. “We have a T20I squad, and we know we can challenge good teams on our day. We’ll have to pick ourselves up to try and compete in that series.” Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who took six wickets in the series, said: “There was a bit of pressure initially, but things settled down after that. The wickets were a touch slow, and the outfield was big, so that helped. PTI EURO 2016: ENGLAND MEET WALES Wayne Rooney’s England and Gareth Bale’s Wales meet in Lens on Thursday with their Euro 2016 ambitions on the line and fears that their followers could spoil the day. With England at risk of disqualification after fan violence erupted in Marseille at the weekend and amid provocative comments from Welsh star Gareth Bale, focus in the build-up has been on anything but football. But with the neighbours’ first meeting at a major tournament looming, thoughts have turned to the pitch, where Wales manager Chris Coleman believes England’s tactical tinkering could give his side an edge. “If you’re looking at England from afar, it’s either going to work for them or it’s not, the fact that they’ve played different formations,” he said on Wednesday. “So we look at that. Maybe they’re not settled or maybe they’re a bit more settled than we think they are.” While Wales’s 3-5-1-1 system has been a staple since the start of the qualifying campaign, England manager Roy Hodgson has seemed caught between using a 4-3-3 formation and a 4-4-2 with a midfield diamond. The 4-3-3 got an outing in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Russia in Marseille, but withEn- gland’s failure to kill off the game having come back to bite them in injury time, change could be afoot. Bale, who set the tone for his team’s 2-1 win over Slovakia with a stunning free-kick, has been the Welsh antagoniser-in-chief, accusing England of arrogance and saying that none of their players would get into the Wales team. H o w e v e r, Coleman described the pre-match sniping as “irrelevant” and his words were echoed by Hodgson, who said: “Talk is talk and action on the field is action on the field.” More used to doing battle on the rugby pitch, England and Wales are facing off in a major football championship for the first time and the results of the opening round of games have put the Welsh in the driving seat. Victory will take them into the last 16 and leave Hodgson’s men clinging on for dear life in Group B, but despite the high stakes, Wayne Rooney says England will go about their task calmly. England captain Wayne Rooney produced a sharp turn of foot on Wednesday when asked how many Wales players would get into his team. When Gareth Bale was asked how many players from England would get into the Wales side, ahead of the neighbours’ Euro 2016 showdown in Lens on Thursday, the grinning Welsh star had replied: “None.” CITY Friday, June 17, 2016 HILIGHTS Vol 1, Issue 168 `.1.00/- www.cityhilights.news ENTERTAINMENT 2M INSTA LOVE` MAKES MADHURI GO `DHAK DHAK` With two million followers on Instagram, Bollywood’s dhak dhak girl, Madhuri Dixit, has joined the list of celebrities who have a huge fan base on the social media.
