About us - DR Salud Health Outreach Trip
About us background DR SALUD (Dominican February 28 - March 7 Republic “Health”) is a student-run health outreach trip to the Dominican Republic. Each year during Spring Break, students from UF College of Medicine and Pharmacy travel with UF Faculty to San Francisco de Macorís, Dominican Republic, to provide health services to the country’s underserved population. Our team DR SALUD 2014 consisted of a diverse group of students from multiple colleges of the UF Health Science Center, including medical students and medical attendings, as well as pharmacy students and pharmacy attendings. We believe the variety of our group fosters the same interdisciplinary learning environment we will encounter during our careers. Our success health outreach trip to the dominican republic The 2014 trip to San Francisco de Macorís succeeded in serving over 400 patients each day. Past teams have been so successful that the city, through UCNE, has awarded team members with plaques and “the keys to the city” to commemorate their efforts. In addition, we have been warmly invited back to the city to continue our medical outreach. Our partnerships Our Future Universidad CatÓlica Nordestana Based in the city of San Francisco de Macorís, UCNE (www.ucne.edu) makes a significant contribution to our effort every year. The UCNE campus comprises both undergraduate and graduate studies, including a College of Medicine. Dominican medical students from UCNE work in conjuction with DR SALUD to prepare clinic sites, facilitate fieldwork, and translate for our non-Spanish-speaking students. Working with UCNE medical students to provide health care to the underprivileged people of the DR is immensely rewarding. In 2014 , we were able to treat over 1,200 patients in just five days - an amazing accomplishment! LUIS ESMURDOC Our visits are greatly facilitated by Dr. Luis Esmurdoc, prior Governor of the Duarte Province and senior UCNE executive. Dr. Esmurdoc has taken a personal interest in welcoming our entire UF team. From escorting us through customs to negotiating our accommodations and providing us with transportation, he is essential to the trip and has become a close friend of UF. He is currently developing an exchange program for the UCNE students to travel to the US and study at the University of Florida.
