adapting themselves on the part of the Maronites brought about this transformation. The Mountains of Lebanon
became an enormous wall of defence against all invaders. This constitutes a unique phenomenon in history; how a
people, united in their faith in Christ, formed themselves into a nation on a rocky mountain range. Mesopotamia was

A further explanation is offered by Fouad Boustany: “Islam is at the same time a religion and a state. It is a theocratic state. All Muslims are from one community within

secular and religious that it is practically impossible to distinguish between them. The political is religious and the
religious is political. In effect, reason and critical sense together with freedom of thought are unacceptable. Reason
can do no more than to appeal to the witness of faith and to cover itself with the mantle of religion”.
Regarding the confusion surrounding the mixing of politics and religion, it is worth
pointing out the difference between the Christian position and that of Islam on this
vexed question. The Christian/Maronite position is that social evolution and
development can take place without any detriment of the basic principles of
religion. These principles actually allow for development. On the other hand, for the
Muslims, social development is determined by revelation and whose
development will bring into question a new conception of the Islamic religion.
So in the 7th century the recently formed Maronite Church, surrounded by Regimes
which were profoundly theocratic in nature, quickly became the Lebanese/Maronite

coming of the Maradats to the mountains of Lebanon. These were Aramaic fighters who
wished to continue the struggle with the Umayyads of Syria. The other
important event was the institution of the Antiochene-Maronite Patriarchate.

Lebanon used to be the second residence of the Maronite Patriarchate.
Because the idea of preserving their faith preceded the idea of forming a nation, in a
perfectly natural way the Patriarch became the focal point of unity and cohesion for
both the political and religious life of the people. The role of the Patriarch grew in
importance as a result of the persecutions, which the Maronites had to undergo. The
Maronite religion cannot be reduced to a particular church, nor can be limited to one

This special ‘essence’ of the Maronites, marked by

Prayer for Mothers
G
ood and Gentle God, we pray in gratitude for our
mothers and for all the women who have joined
with you in the wonder of bringing forth new life. You
who became human through a woman, grant to all mothers
the courage they need to face the uncertain future that
life with children always brings.
ive them the strength to live and to be loved
in return. Give them the faithful support
of husband, family and friends as they care for the
physical and spiritual growth of their children. Give
them joy and delight in their children to sustain
them through the trials of motherhood. Most of
all, give them the wisdom to turn to you

Labneh
(Lebanese Cream Cheese)
"This is the Lebanese version of cream cheese,
a lot tastier and lower in calories. Serve on a
plate, sprinkled with olive oil, olives, tomatoes,
cucumbers and mint. Or simply spread it like
cream cheese on pita bread."
Ingredients
16 cups plain yogurt
1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1/4 cup olive oil
Directions
1.Line a large colander with a cheesecloth. Stir salt into
the yogurt, and pour the yogurt into the
cheesecloth. Set the colander in the sink or bowl to
catch the liquid that drains off. Leave to drain for 24
hours.
2.After draining for the 24 hours, transfer the
resulting cheese to a bowl. Stir in the olive oil. Store in
