A quickstart
Butterfly
Butterfly 2.0 Menstruation and ovulation calendar.
When you start up this program it will set the first day of the last period on today. This is generally not true and you will
have to set the starting day of your last period yourself.
· To set the first day of your last period, click button "Settings" and adjust the settings shown in the Settings window.
You will not be able to set a new menstruation date in the future for obvious reasons.
· If your period has a length of 28 days (most common) leave the settings that way. A cycle starts with the first day of

your period and ends the day before your next period starts.
Please, leave the luteal phase setting (default 14 days), unless you know what you are doing and if the length is
known to you.
Click on the button "Apply changes" to effectuate any new settings and close the Settings window again.
Finally, select your goal: to conceive or to avoid pregnancy by selecting the appropriate radiobuttons in the main panel
.
Navigating through your ovulation calendar is possible by singleclicking the dates in both the calendar and the list in
the second pane of the program. A prognosis on the selected day is given. The butterfly in the top leftcorner of the main
window flutters on fertile days. Furthermore, the background color of the program window changes depending on menses
days or chances of conceiving a boy or a girl.
The pane with relevant dates can be printed in a small font and you can stick this list in your diary, on your fridge or
wherever you might need it.
Immediate help is provided on the bottom bar of the program window just by hovering the mouse cursor over the
components and textlabels on the form.
This help-file provides only the information needed to operate this program and the basics of the menstrual cycle.

Butterfly 2.0 can display 2 panels, each of which is discussed separately.
When the program is started then it will display only panel 1 which contains all the information you will
need. The listview (panel 2) is displayed by clicking on the "Open List" button.

As depicted above the menstruation-view of the calendar is selected. The days are marked will be marked in red
color. If the fertile days modus is selected, the fertile days will be marked with a green color (see example).
Likewise, a color scheme is used for background color of both panels. The background-color is dependent on the
selected date in both calendarview and listview. These are:

Silver
You are not fertile on the selected day, especially if you select the "avoid pregnancy"as your
goal.
Dark orange
Menstruation (set or due). The first day of a new period.
Light orange
Menstruation for the duration in days.
Pink
Fertile day. If you conceive then the child will most likely be a girl. Butterfly flutters.
Light blue
Fertile day. If you conceive then the child will most likely be a boy. Butterfly flutters

Butterfly 2.0 , by default will start up with panel 1, depicted below, that will suffice for everyday use.
As depicted below, the program runs in the "Fertile days" modus. The fertile days are marked with a green color. If you
select the "menstruation mode", then the menses days are marked with a red color. See example in red.

The second panel displays a listview of the
ovulation calendar/calculator. In this case
in the "avoid pregnancy" mode. In the
"conceive"-mode the 'low fertility' days will
be omitted. The list is generated for a cycle
of a 28-days period and a luteal phase of
14 days.
The selected day (28 feb) seems to be a
safe day when the goal is to avoid
pregnancy, provided that the periods are
very regular.
You may print the list in a very small font
that is suitable to stick in your diary, on
your fridge or wherever you might need it.

Settings
You will not need the listview for everyday use. However, the listview may come in quite handy for printing and
planning, e.g. your vacation or parties.
Below: changing of the background colors in the fertile timewindow. When chances for conceiving either a girl or a
boy are larger then the background color of the window is changed accordingly.
Thus, Butterfly also helps you plan the sex of your future child. A study of 1000+ couples clearly demonstrates
that there is enough evidence behind this prediction method. In other words, there is a 50/50 chance that a boy/girl will be
born but out of 1000 women who tried to plan for the gender of their future child, 700+ gave birth to the baby of the sex
they planned for.

Butterfly will save not only the settings depicted above but will also save your goal: conceive or avoid pregnancy.
WARNING:
Do not mess with the luteal phase setting in this form (default 14 days). If fertility is a real problem you should
consult medical advice. Medical assistance could include the determination of the length of the luteal phase
with the use of diagnostic methods and measuring the basal body temperature.

Ovulation Basics
What is ovulation?
Ovulation is the release of a single, mature egg from a follicle that developed in the ovary. It usually occurs regularly,
around day 14 of a 28-day menstrual cycle. Once released, the egg is capable of being fertilized for 12 to 48 hours before
it begins to disintegrate. This is the most fertile period of your cycle: during ovulation your chances of conception are
highest.
When does ovulation occur?
Ovulation usually takes place 14 days after the beginning of your menstrual cycle. The time of ovulation within the
menstrual cycle is determined by the luteal phase, which is usually 12 to 16 days long. You can calculate the time of
ovulation within your cycle by subtracting the length of your luteal phase from the length of your cycle. For example, if
your cycle is 28 days long and your luteal phase is 12 days long, the ovulation will occur on day 16 of your cycle
(28-12=16). The exact time of ovulation may vary within your cycle, because ovulation can be delayed by a number of
factors such as stress, illness, diet, or increased physical activity.
How does ovulation determine my fertile days?
Your fertile period starts about 4-5 days before ovulation, and ends about 24-48 hours after it. This is because sperm can
live in your body for approximately 4 to 5 days, and the egg can live for 24 to 48 hours after being released. You are most
fertile on the day before and the day of ovulation. Knowing your fertile days can help you increase your chances of getting
pregnant, or avoid an unwanted pregnancy. The relation between cycle length, ovulation and fertile days is shown in the
table depicted below.

When am I most fertile?
In order to get pregnant, a sperm must meet and
fertilize an egg, so any factors that affect this also affect your
fertility. These include: the timing of ovulation, how long the
egg lasts, whether there are any sperm present and how long
sperm can live inside you.
Women who have regular periods can easily calculate
when ovulation occurs. Ovulation almost always happens 14
days before you expect your period. For a woman who has 28
day cycles, that would be in the exact middle of the cycle, 14
days after the last period and 14 days before the next one.
Women who have 30 day cycles can expect to ovulate 16
days after the last period, which is 14 days before the next
one.
Women who have irregular cycles cannot predict when
they will ovulate. In retrospect, they can calculate that
ovulation occurred 14 days before a period, but that does not
help in planning a pregnancy. Women with very irregular
cycles may need to use ovulation predictor kits to determine
when they will ovulate. Ovulation predictor kits detect the rise
in hormones that occurs before the egg is released.
It is not necessary to time intercourse to coincide with ovulation. That's because both the sperm and the egg can
live inside you for a while. The egg can last approximately 24 hours after ovulation. If sperm are available anytime during
this 24 hour window, you can get pregnant. You don't have to have sex within the 24 hour window, though. That's because
sperm can live inside you for days, waiting for the egg to be released. You can get pregnant by having intercourse
anywhere from several days before ovulation to a day after ovulation.
For example, if you ovulate on day 14 (counting the first day of your period as day 1), you can get pregnant by
having sex anytime between days 9-15, and perhaps days 8 and 16 as well. Conception will take place on day 14 or so,
but you may have had sex many days before conception.
Apart from this, you can boost your chances to conceive a boy or girl by selecting the right time for sexual
intercourse. This calculation is based on the fact that female's X-chromosomes live longer and are less active than are
male's Y-chromosomes. Therefore, if you have sexual intercourse three days before ovulation, you have more chances to
conceive a girl. If your sexual intercourse takes place closer to the ovulation moment, your chances to conceive a boy
greatly increase. More about this subject.
Scope and Limitations
This calculator is for adults and is provided for your information only. It is not a substitute for
professional medical advice, and may not represent your individual medical situation. Other methods of
determining fertility use basal body temperature and other evidence of ovulation and are considered to be
more accurate than the calendar method. Ask your doctor for more information.
It should be noted that the ovulation calendar works best for women with a regular menstrual cycle.
Moreover, it is not reliable if your menstrual cycle is very irregular from month to month. The same applies to
gender prediction of the baby.
You will need to know the length of your menstrual cycle.
To figure it out, track your menstrual cycle for several months.
A typical menstrual cycle:
· Starts with the first day your period starts.
· Ends the day before your next period starts. ( !! )
· The average length is 28 days and the luteal phase is 14.
If your cycles are very regular, you may be able to determine when you ovulate by doing some simple
math: in the average menstrual cycle, ovulation occurs 14 days before the menstrual period arrives -- or on
day 14 of a 28-day cycle. So if you subtract 14 days (luteal phase) from the length of your cycle, you'll get an
idea of when you ovulate.
If your cycles aren't very regular, or you'd like a more accurate picture of your ovulation, you can try
other techniques for pinpointing ovulation.
If the cycles are very regular the calculator can be used with certainty for 3 purposes:
· planning pregnancy and due date.
· avoid pregnancy
· Vacation planner - scroll to view future menstrual cycle dates. See listview, panel 2.

About this program
Butterfly 2.0 is a freeware program that was written in Borland Delphi 5 personal edition.
It runs on W9x, XP, 2000, Vista and Windows 7.
It is installed by default in the Program Files directory, but it can be installed anywhere including on a USB
drive. It is a portable application that does not write in the registry and is machine-independent. Its uses an
INI-file in the default directory to store data.
You can place a program-link in the startup group if you like.
The help-file (.CHM) is also available on request in adobe PDF-format.

Butterfly 2.0, however is completely free of charge and completely portable. You can carry it with you on
a USB drive and it prints a list of dates in a small font to stick it into your diary. Moreover, it still does all the
things the programs mentioned do including child sex planning.

AUTHOR

CLIENT
A natural or legal person (i.e. a company) in any country, who has a legal relationship with AUTHOR in connection with a License
or in connection with any form of providing the Software to this natural or legal person by AUTHOR .
SOFTWARE
Computerprograms, third-party software components, file structures, helpfiles, and other software provided by AUTHOR to enable
operation of the software products on a computer
LICENSE
A grant of license by AUTHOR to allow Client to install and use the Software on his/her computer under the conditions laid down
in the License agreement.
DELIVERY
Delivery to Client means that AUTHOR makes the Software available to Client for use on one or more computers, under the
conditions laid down in the License agreement. Delivery does not affect the ownership of the Software: AUTHOR remains the
owner of the Software and the Intellectual Property rights at all times.
PARTIES
AUTHOR and Client are the two parties for whom any legal relationship is governed by these General Conditions.

These General conditions and terms of delivery - exclusively - govern each and every legal relationship betw een AUTHOR and Client.
Terms that differ from these General conditions and terms of delivery are only applicable if and w hen AUTHOR has explicitly agreed to
those terms in w riting.
When an Agreement betw een AUTHOR and Client ends - by w hatever cause - these General conditions and terms of delivery remain in full
force and w ill govern each and every relationship betw een the Parties.
Each and every legal relationship betw een AUTHOR and Client w ill be exclusively governed by Dutch material- and formal law, excluding
collision law and other legal rules. International Treaties that have no direct force under the Dutch legislative system as w ell as the Vienna
Convention on Consumer Goods are expressly excluded.
The moment a License Agreement betw een AUTHOR and Client goes into force, Client is granted a non-exclusive, non-transferable license
to use the Softw are on the computers to w hich the License applies, under the conditions laid dow n in the License Agreement.
The License Agreement goes into force w hen Client, during the installation of the Softw are on his/her computer, accepts the License
Agreement. By installing the Softw are, Client fully accepts all terms in the agreement, and fully accepts these General Conditions.
Client is granted the non-exclusive, non-transferable License to install the Softw are on his/her computer and to use it on that computer, only
if he/she:
a. fully accepts these General Conditions
b. fully accepts the License Agreement presented during the installation
Limitations for use of the Softw are

The softw are is not intended for use in, nor deemed suitable for application in nuclear facilities, aircraft navigation systems, air traffic
control systems, naval navigation systems, naval traffic control systems, medical treatment of one or more persons, or any other situation
w here any use of the softw are, e.g. due to errors in the softw are or due to any other cause in using the softw are, could lead to death,
personal injury or any other physical damage or to damage to the environment. Client agrees not to use the softw are in any of those
situations and indemnifies author for all damage claims that could result from such unauthorized use of the softw are.
Client shall not use the Softw are in any form or activity that infringes the Intellectual Property rights of AUTHOR. Copying , analizing,
reverse-engineering the Softw are, using or re-using parts of the Softw are in another form than provided by AUTHOR , building or including
parts of the Softw are into other softw are - and similar activities - form an infringement of the rights of AUTHOR and are not allow ed.
A License granted to Client does not imply in any w ay a promise for support that goes further than providing the Help-file w ith the
Softw are. By accepting the License agreement Client accepts that no further support for using the Softw are is implied in the License.
This SOFTWARE is provided "as is" w ithout a w arranty of any kind. By accepting this License Agreement, LICENSEE agrees that he or she
w ill make use of the SOFTWARE entirely at his/her ow n risk, and that he/she takes the full responsibility for using the SOFTWARE, including
the possibility that it may still contain bugs or errors and that the fitness for any particular purpose w as not demonstrated and is not
guaranteed or promised by AUTHOR. In no event shall AUTHOR or its suppliers be liable for any damages w hatsoever including direct

AUTHOR endeavours to prevent virus contamination of its Softw are, yet cannot fully guarantee that no virus contamination or other
malicious intervention through the internet - or through another route - could occur. Client agrees that he/she is fully responsible to check
his/her ow n computer for virus presence and other malicious effects w hen installing and using the Softw are.
In case a court verdict w ould imply that ruling out all forms of liability of AUTHOR is not allow ed, the liability of AUTHOR w ill be limited to the
license fee Client has paid for the Softw are.
By filling the registration form in the order procedure, Client grants AUTHOR the right to store Clients personal data - as submitted - in one or
more files for administrative purposes used by AUTHOR.
Any dispute that may arise from these General conditions and terms of delivery or from the License agreement accepted by Client in the
installation of the Softw are w ill exclusively and entirely be subjected to the court verdict of the District Court (Arrondissements-rechtbank)
in The Hague, Netherlands (Den Haag).
If one or more of the terms or clauses in these General conditions is / are in conflict w ith legal rules or are declared invalid by a decision in
court, the other terms and clauses w ill be unaffected and w ill remain in full force. AUTHOR and Client w ill then agree on one or more new
terms that provide a legal solution in accordance w ith the intent of the original text of these General Conditions .
