Emily VanCamp finds her

E
MILY VanCamp is only 25, but already
she’s starred in two long-running television series, Everwood (2002-2006) and
Brothers & Sisters (2006-2011), and
she’s hoping that the new ABC show
Revenge will make it three straight.
“It’s definitely a bit surreal,” VanCamp says. “I
didn’t expect, after leaving ‘Brothers & Sisters,’ to
necessarily go straight back into television, but I
found myself really missing it. Then, when I read
the pilot for Revenge, I fell in love with it and figured, ‘Let’s give it a go. If it happens, it happens,
and, if not, then it wasn’t meant to be.’ But I was
excited by the possibility of it, and here we go.”
Revenge which premiered on September 21, puts
a contemporary spin on the Alexander Dumas novel
The Count of Monte Cristo. VanCamp stars as Emily
Thorne, a beautiful young woman who arrives in
Long Island’s affluent Hamptons and quickly makes
herself at home among the wealthy locals. Emily
isn’t exactly new to the area, however: She grew up
there as a child, until her beloved father was framed
for a crime he didn’t commit – framed by some of
the very people she’s now befriending and ... setting
up for a fall.
Theshow’sensemblecastalsoincludesMadeleine
StoweasVictoriaGrayson,thesocialscene’sdoyenne
andEmily’sprimarytarget,andHenryCzernyasher
philandering husband, Conrad. Joshua Bowman
plays their son, David, who romances Emily and
winds up dead, setting in motion the show’s
Damages-like flashback conceit. Then there’s
Gabriel Mann as Nolan Ross, who recognisesEmily as
his childhood friend, Amanda, and Connor Paolo as
Declan Porter, a blue-collar kid with an eye on the
Graysons’ mean-girl daughter, Charlotte (Christa B
Allen). Nick Wechsler plays Jack Porter, a local tavern owner and Declan’s older brother, and Ashley
Madekwe is Ashley Davenport, a Hamptons event
planner who isEmily’sclosestfriend.
The show represents a significant change of pace
for VanCamp: First, after playing good girls for so
long, this time she’s portraying a devious
sociopath. Second, after supporting roles in
Everwood and Brothers & Sisters, VanCamp is the
unquestioned lead, the face of Revenge.
Speaking by telephone from her Los Angeles
home, the young actress says that she’s ready to
tackle both challenges.
“I really wanted to break free from the girl-nextdoor roles,” VanCamp says. “I found myself feeling
kind of stunted after Brothers & Sisters. I guess
creatively unfulfilled is what I was feeling, and I
just wanted to do something totally different. And
this character is definitely that. It’s so much fun to
play Emily. She’s so layered. Emily is a girl on a
mission and she’s going to kick ass, and it’s just a
blast to play.”
The best revenge dramas work because the audience simultaneously cares about, fears and fears
for the protagonist. VanCamp says that it wasn’t
easy to make Emily into such a character.
“It’s a balancing game,” the actress says,
“because she can’t be too soft and she can’t be too
hard. It’s a fine line to walk, but I think we’re
accomplishing that in the writing, in terms of going
into her back story and being able to see what she
went through, what these people put her and her
father through. That will definitely lend itself well
to getting people to want to root for the character.”
“Yes, she’s been through a lot and, yes, these are
evil people around her,” VanCamp continues, “but
I also want people to know that Emily means business. You have to fear her, what she might do next.
She’s scary. She’s very twisted. Essentially she’s
numb to her feelings apart from this one goal,
which is revenge. She’s built up the wall, and this is
the only thing that keeps her going, her only connection, I suppose, to her father.”
“People often ask me about the longevity of a
story like this,” VanCamp adds, “but she’s not
going to just kill these people and be done with it.
This is what she’s living for. It’s a prolonged plan
that she’s created to see the demise of these people,
not just to make them go away. She wants to watch
their demise and wants to watch them suffer the
way she suffered.”
“So in that respect there can be longevity, and
I’m hoping that people will root for her all the way
through.” As for her maiden venture as a leading
lady, VanCamp doesn’t even try to downplay what
it means to her.
“It’s a huge responsibility,” she says. “It’s been an
incredible few months, I
have to say, doing the show. I feel like
I’ve spent a long time preparing for a
moment like this and worked really
hard to get to a place where I feel
comfortable enough to take on this
kind of thing, so it’s amazing and
wonderful and, yes, it’s intimidating and daunting at times. I’m just
trying to appreciate every single
moment.”
“I sometimes can’t believe
it,” VanCamp continues. “I
was driving to work the other
day, and there was a big billboard of ... me. It was just odd and
kind of crazy and great. It’s like a direct representation of all these years that I’ve worked very
hard. I’m hoping that the show will do well and
that people will like it, and I’m just trying to love
every second of it.”
To put things in perspective, VanCamp started
acting at 14 as “more of a hobby” while attending
ballet school. She first appeared in an episode of
Are You Afraid of the Dark? in 2000, and then
played the young Jacqueline Bouvier in the television movie Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis
(2000). After a few more guest shots and a regular
role on the short-lived series Glory Days (2002),
VanCamp landed her breakthrough part as Amy
Abbott on Everwood.
“I had fun doing those little things here and
there,” she says, “but I think the small-town girl in
me never really imagined that I could make it in the
business. It was just fun. Then, I don’t know, somewhere along the line something shifted in me and I
decided that I didn’t want to do ballet anymore,
that I wanted to continue to pursue acting. I was
still always thinking of acting as my hobby, but
then it just turned into my job.”
“And it’s the best job in the world,” VanCamp
concludes, “because it still doesn’t feel like work
and I’m 25 now. I’m so grateful for that. There’s
nothing better than loving what you do. So it
was never a plan, it just shifted into my
career path.”
“And I’ve been pretty lucky, I have to
say.”

Olivia Wilde’s secret date!
GLEE star Lea Michele has split from boyfriend Theo
Stockman but the pair insists the break-up is amicable.
“This is not a dramatic break up, the relationship just ran
its course. They are still friends and will always be friends,”
femalefirst.co.uk quoted Michele’s representative as saying.
It is believed that long distance took a toll on their relationship. The 25-year-old actress has been shooting for Glee in
Los Angeles, while Stockman lives in New York.
ACTRESS Olivia Wilde has confirmed she is dating somebody, but
is tight-lipped about the lucky guy. The star has been linked to several famous men, including Bradley Cooper and Justin Timberlake,
ever since she separated from husband Tao Ruspoli in February,
reports contactmusic.com. When asked if she is currently dating,
she said: “Yeah. I like it if the guy possesses creativity and doesn’t
take me to a boring restaurant or a boring whatever but comes up
with an interesting location. I like to be surprised, for sure.”

How to navigate oil’s smoke points
Q: WHAT is an oil’s smoke point? Does it affect food’s taste?
A: When cooking oil, or any fat, reaches its smoke point, it begins to break down, releasing smoke in the process. The chemical change can ruin
the flavor of the food being cooked. Different fats have different smoke points. If you’re cooking with a lot of heat – say, deep-frying or stir-frying –
choose a fat with a high smoke point; try one that’s refined or vegetable-based. Peanut and soybean oils, for example, are able to withstand up to
450 degrees – either one is perfect for stir-fried shrimp or fried chicken. Fats with lower smoke points do well over low to medium heat; use them
for sauteing or finishing pan sauces. Opt for olive oil (410 degrees) or butter (350 degrees) for these uses. Clarified butter, which is refined by
skimming off the milk solids, can withstand up to 400 degrees before smoking.
Q: Is it possible to recycle or compost leftover pieces of fabric?
A: Small fabric scraps are the heart of patchwork quilts. If creating quilts isn’t a pastime of yours, consider donating your scraps to a church, a

and seed a pepper, stand it upright, then slice off
the sides, cutting from top to bottom, leaving the
core, ribs and seeds behind.

Graphic Books bestseller: There shall come a Titan
The New Teen Titans omnibus, Vol 1, sits atop the hardcover list this week. It reprints the first 16 issues of the 1980s series that brought together a
few sidekick heroes (Robin, Kid Flash and Wonder Girl) and teamed them with some new ones (Cyborg, Raven and Starfire). These Titans, written
by Marv Wolfman and illustrated by George Pérez, become one of DC’s most popular books. The stories reprinted in this omnibus edition chronicle
the formation of the team, faceoffs with the assassin Deathstroke and the Fearsome Five, a misguided confrontation with the Justice League and a
battle royal against Trigon, a demon who is also Raven’s father. About midway in there is a “day in the life” story that focused on the civilian lives of
the heroes. That issue cemented this series as doing something different: the creative team was developing three-dimensional characters and
exploring new directions. In The New Teen Titans(1982), issue No 19, the characters loved! They fought! They struggled with college! The artwork
was a delight: each character was distinct, and page layouts were dynamic. These heroes have led to some strong bonds. Walt, a Titans fans whom
I met through a fan club sometime around 1987, later became a good friend. He is getting married next month, and I think I hit upon the perfect
gift. He’s a fan of the cartoonist Fred Hembeck, who is often commissioned to recreate favourite comic book covers in his distinctive style. I debated a
couple of options, but I was naturally drawn to the cover of The New Teen Titans No 1 to celebrate his special day next month.

Peer pressure
harnessed for good
THOMAS HODGKINSON

E live in an age that is
deeply individualist.
Urbanisation, suburbanisation, the decline
of organised religion,
the rise of the welfare state - these and
other factors have contributed to the
breakdown of social structures. Even
the triumph of romantic love, which
seemed to promise connectedness, has
ended up having the opposite effect,
creating narrow, nuclear relationships

Technological breakthroughs, which
ought to link us, isolate us even more.
We lurk in bedrooms on Facebook
Chat; on buses, we text, oblivious to the
people around us, who are themselves
enclosed in the sonic cocoon of their
iPod playlists. This isolation, which is
absolutely modern, confounds and contradicts our nature as social animals.
Yet we are still possessed by the need to
belong, and crave acceptance by others;
we still long for peer approval. Our
ideas of what constitutes good and bad
behaviour remain defined by the
behaviour of those around us. In other
words, we are susceptible to peer pressure - and this, Tina Rosenberg argues
in her thought-provoking new book, is
something we should be making every
effort to exploit in order to cure social
ills. What if peer pressure were harnessed for good? Her big idea is that
society can be improved by creating groups that make it easy to
do the right thing, because others are doing it too. These
groups can be especially
powerful if the adman’s skill
is applied to making them
alluring.
The author begins with
an exercise in rebranding.
Too often, she says, the
phrase “peer pressure” is
used negatively. So she stops
talking of “peer pressure” and
starts referring to “the social
cure”. This is her take-home
phrase, her “black swan” or “tipping point”. (It’s a shame that she didn’t make it the title of her book.) Then,
to illustrate how her social cure can
work - like a kind of positive contagion
- she presents us with a pageant of
examples.
First the anti-smoking campaign.
When the Surgeon General’s report on
the lethal effects of smoking was published back in 1964, health officials
thought their job was done. Not a bit of
it. As Rosenberg explains, people overwhelmingly start smoking in their
teens, and telling teenagers that the
habit is going to kill them only makes it

seem cooler. That is why people start
smoking, not because it’s addictive that’s merely why they continue smoking - but because it seems cool. To prevent people from starting to smoke, the
key is to make not-smoking seem a
cooler lifestyle choice. Which is precisely what campaigners managed to
achieve in the late Nineties in
California, Florida and elsewhere.
Presenting smokers as puppets of the
to give the impression that there were
more of them than there actually were.
They staged witty events designed to
mock the police. After a magazine’s
offices had been raided, Otpor
activists responded by ostentatiously
carrying in large cardboard boxes,
apparently filled with replacement
supplies. When the police arrested
them, the boxes turned out to be
empty - which made the officers look
heavy-handed, and, more importantly,
foolish.
What Rosenberg doesn’t do, because
she can’t, is prove the extent to which
Otpor was responsible for ousting
Milosevic. Nor can she separate how
much it depended on the attractions of
belonging to the activist group, and
how much on the marketing-inspired
strategies of its leaders. A similar
point could be made about the antismoking campaign. Could the same
effects have been achieved by, say, a
handful of adverts cooked up by a
marketing team, presenting smokers
as slaves to capitalism? And to what
extent has the decline in smoking in
many countries been accelerated by
accidental developments: by the fact
that, for example, with the rise of
mobile phones, teenagers now have
something to do with their hands
other than manipulate a Marlboro
Light?
Yet it’s hard not to be seduced by Join
the Club. Whether writing about healthcare in India or study habits in American
universities, Rosenberg expresses herself
with admirable clarity and concision. I
doubt this book will achieve the same
success as some of the psychosocial studies that have topped the bestseller lists in
recent years - it doesn’t have quite the
simplicity, perhaps, or the pub-chat
appeal of their central arguments. But it
should nonetheless be applauded, and
pressed into the hands of preachers and
politicians, schoolteachers and public
health campaigners.

James Franco to direct Child Of God
Beckham to buy Taylor’s jewellery for Victoria
JAMES FRANCO is all set to direct Child of God, a film based on
Cormac McCarthy’s novel. Child of God follows a recently-released
convict who lives outside of normal society in a cave in the hills of
East Tennessee and engages in necrophilia and other acts of “crime
and degradation”, contactmusic.com reports. “We shot a 20-minute
test of it that turned out pretty well, we were gearing up to do the feature but that for various reasons it’s on hold, but we are going to
make a movie based on his Cormac McCarthy’s third book Child Of
God,” said Franco. While, Franco is currently working on two documentaries, one about his time on US soap General Hospital and the
other about a porn website.
SOCCER ace David Beckham is reportedly planning to
buy late Dame Elizabeth Taylor’s jewellery for wife
Victoria, when it is auctioned in December. Beckham is
keen to splash on the late screen legend’s 2.9 million
pounds worth of diamonds, contactmusic.com reports.
“David’s been so happy since Harper was born, he feels
like him and Victoria are falling in love all over again. He
wants to show it with the most impressive gifts possible,” a source said. Auction house Christie’s are to sell
off the Cleopatra star’s jewellery collection in December,
nine months after she died in March at the age of 79.

OOEY Deschanel, star of the

Rashida Jones stars in latest
Dove hair campaign

VERYONE has had a bad hair day —
even entertainers. So, to promote its
new hair care products aimed at fixing dry and damaged hair, Dove has
enlisted actress Rashida Jones to star in a
new campaign that encourages people to
“make friends with your hair.”
In a campaign beginning on Monday,
Unilever’s Dove is promoting its Dove
Nourishing Oil Care Collection of shampoo,
conditioner and styling products with TV ads
that show Jones contending with frizzy hair
while meeting friends at a restaurant and in a
yoga class. The ads also promote a contest
Dove is holding online in which people can
submit videos about their bad hair days.
“If your hair has a mind of its own, tell us
about it. You could star in the next Dove Hair
Commercial,” the ads state.
The ads are in keeping with Dove’s push to
featuring “real” women in ads. It has been
doing so in campaigns since 2004, when the
company introduced its Campaign for Real
Beauty ads that featured non-models. Since

ty,’ and each category has a different take on
what that means,” said David Rubin, director
of Unilever Hair Brands. In the hair category,
“‘real beauty’ is about having not damaged,
not overly dry hair, having healthy hair,”
Rubin added.
Jones was chosen as a star because the
actress, who is Quincy Jones’ daughter, has
appeared in The Office and stars in Parks and
Recreation. She also is seen as relatable and
able to appreciate women’s hair struggles,
Rudin said.
“She’s someone who gets what the concept
of ‘real beauty’ is and can tell a specific story
about her hair,” he said.
Unilever declined to say how much they
are spending on the campaign. Print ads will
run in People magazine. Social media also
plays a factor, including a Facebook

and a Twitter
presence.
then, the company has founded the “Dove
Movement for Self-Esteem,” which partners
with organisations, including the Girl Scouts
and Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and aims
to promote self-esteem in young women.
The latest campaign continues the “real
people” theme with the contest. Three finalists who are deemed to have the best stories
will win a trip to New York and a haircut
makeover. Fans will vote on the overall winner, who will be featured in a TV ad in
December.

Zooey Deschanel plays Jess Day,
a schoolteacher who is goofy,
good-natured and unguarded in
her dealings with the world —
and particularly tone-deaf with
respect to men
“Here’s the thing: You can be a nerd and be awkward, AND be attractive at the same time,”
Deschanel said. It was a half-hour after the chase
began and, unable to shake the paparazzi, she had
graciously let them snap her on the sidewalk outside Balthazar, her Soho substitute restaurant
where now she was settling into a banquette.
“Being attractive and smooth aren’t mutually
exclusive.
“Jess is a person who spent six years with the
same guy. She’s not a dater. And now she’s being
put out there in a way she’s never been before.
She’s a little bit guileless and tries to see the best in
people,” Deschanel added with a laugh, “and you
know THAT always goes wrong!
“She’s different from me in some ways,” Deschanel
went on, her hands flying and head bobbing with gusto,
“but there’s a part of myself that really is her: 13-yearold me was very much Jess — optimistic, excited all the
time. A lot of these things that Jess is, I feel like are at my
core.
“I made a career being cast as smart-aleck-type
characters, but I’m not sarcastic at all. I’m not ironic.
I’m very sincere, generally. So this role played into a
part of myself that I hadn’t been using on the screen.”
Deschanel’s love life seems happily fulfiled. Two
years ago she married Ben Gibbard, front man for the
rock band Death Cab for Cutie. And she has supplemented her acting career by teaming with M Ward in
a folk-rock duo, She & Him, which has a Christmas
holiday record coming out later this year.
Now she waits to discover how New Girl and the higher prominence it might bring impact on Zooey
Deschanel.
“I haven’t quite seen yet what that does to my personal life and freedom,” she said, noting with a chuckle,
“This has been my first weird paparazzi chase. But I
think it was just a weird fluke. I really think those guys
just wanted the exercise.”

No more acting on TV: Tisca Chopra
Tere Naam 2 script will be ready soon: Satish Kaushik
SHE enjoys an occasional stint on the small screen, but
Tisca Chopra doubts she would ever return to acting on
the tube. “Now I have films lined up, so it is kind of hard
to act on TV because it needs a lot more time and hours
on a daily basis. But I enjoy hosting and judging,” Tisca,
who is busy playing narrator on Sony TV’s Prayaschit,
said. She had earlier acted in serials like Kahaani Ghar
Ghar Kii and Sarrkkar: Risshton Ki Ankahi Kahani. She
even judged STAR News’ Anchor Hunt. On the film front,
she will be seen in Love Breakups Zindagi, which is Dia
Mirza and Zayed Khan’s debut production.
ACTOR-FILMMAKER Satish Kaushik says the script of
the sequel to his 2003 Salman Khan-starrer hit movie
Tere Naam will be locked soon. “Already working on the
script of Tere Naam 2, it will be ready soon,” Kaushik,
who is best remembered for his role as Calendar in Mr
India, posted on his Twitter page. Tere Naam, which
was directed by Kaushik, was a remake of the 1999
Tamil film Sethu. It featured Salman as Radhe Mohan,
a young boy who falls in love with a girl, but loses his
mind when he is attacked by goons and is admitted to
an asylum.

ER stint with cinema is legendary.
Vyjayanthimala, who has lived
through the changes in Bollywood “from the Kumars to the Khans” -,
affirms that filmmaking has become
easier due to technology and the camera itself has
become an artist.
“Indian cinema has undergone a huge change
technically. I see a huge Western influence in
today’s films. Technically, they are so advanced
that I think the camera does wonders today. Our
time was different. Now the camera itself is an
artist,” the actress, who turned 75 on Sunday, said
in an interview.
“Be it dancing or fighting, it’s mostly handled
by the camera. If you miss something, they can
correct it technically. But, in my time, if any mistake was made, the whole sequence had to be reshot. It’s much easier nowadays,” added the
actress, who is an accomplished Bharatanatyam
dancer.
A Tamil, Vyjayanthimala entered filmdom with
a bang thanks to the success of her first Tamil film
Vazhkai in 1949, which was later remade in
Telugu. And its Hindi remake, Bahaar, marked
her entry into Hindi films in 1951.
As she hailed from the South, “I had to adapt
many things (to work in Hindi films).”
“It was different from the South. So I had to
work hard for the characters. It’s not only the dialogues but also the mannerisms,” said the retired
actress who ruled the Hindi film firmament in the
1950s and the 1960s.
She was loved and appreciated not only for her
on-screen persona and performances but also for
her flawless dancing skills. She is grateful to have
got opportunities to work with the best in the
industry.
“It has been a long journey, a very wonderful
journey, I must say. Whatever I have done in my
films and after having worked with such wonderful people, great directors and very nice co-stars
and technicians, I couldn’t have asked for anything more.
“I have worked with three superstars — Dilip
Kumar, Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor. I have
worked with all the Kumars - Dilip Kumar,
Kishor Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Manoj Kumar
and Rajendra Kumar,” she said, adding
with humour that “in those times there
used to be all Kumars and no Khans!”
Some of her memorable performances were in Devdas (1955), New Delhi
(1956), Kathputli (1957), Madhumati
(1958), Sangam(1964), Leader

(1964), Amrapali (1966), Chhoti Si Mulaqat
(1967) and Jewel Thief (1967).
My maximum films were with Dilip Kumar,
said the actress. “We shared a certain comfort
level and enjoyed the company since Devdas. In
fact, she played Chandramukhi in director
Bimal Roy’s Devdas, but says “I haven’t seen
any of the remakes of Devdas.”
It is believed that it was Vyjayanthimala who
paved the way for South Indian actresses in the
Hindi film industry. “I am happy that I could
pave the way for other South Indian actresses,
but the person who really opened the doors was
S S Vasan who made Chandralekha (1948).
“When it released, it took the North by storm
because by then they haven’t seen that kind of
lavish sets, costumes and splendour. So Vasan
was the person who opened the door for Hindi
films in the South,” she said.
Chandralekha was reportedly made on a
budget of Rs 600,000 and was said to have been
the most expensive Tamil film of its time.
It was a conscious decision on her part to bid
adieu to showbiz after she married Dr
Chamanlal Bali, personal physician of Raj
Kapoor, and relocated to Chennai.
“I still relish those golden memories. I left the
industry once I got married to Bali in 1968.
Offers kept on pouring in, but we had decided
that I wouldn’t work any more. Being a housewife is also a big profession and it comes with a
huge responsibility: so is working in the industry. I preferred not to mix them up,” said yjayanthimala, who now stays in Triplicane in
Chennai.
Vyjayanthimala

Bharatanatyam and says: “I am still a senior Bharatanatyam performing artist. I
take part in dance festivals. There would
be a number of shows happening in
the coming three
months.
I
would be totally
engaged with
that.”
