Living on the ‘fringe’
with Seth Gabel
From left: A poster of the TV series Fringe.; A still showing Seth Gabel in Fringe.
IAN SPELLING
HOLLYWOOD WATCH
O we’re surprised that we’re back,” he says,”
and we’re grateful. And, at the same time, we
think maybe there’s something going on with
Fringe that’s not being accounted for.” Such is
life in the topsy-turvy world of Fox’s Fringe.
Gabel originally signed on for a single episode back in Season
2. He appeared as the “alternate” Lincoln Lee, a Fringe team
leader, in the second-season finale, Over There, Part 1. Gabel
went on to play the alternate Lee several times in Season 3, and
also turned up occasionally as a bespectacled, slightly lessassured version of Lee in Our
Universe.
Now, when Fox premieres Season
4 of Fringe on September 23, Gabel
will be a series regular, playing both
versions of Lee. The 29-year-old
actor is best known for his roles as
the sexually confused son of Ava
Moore (Famke Janssen) on
Nip/Tuck(2004) and as the cocaineaddicted son of Tripp Darling
(Donald Sutherland) on Dirty Sexy
Money(2007-2009). Offscreen he’s
married to actress Bryce Dallas
Howard, with whom he’s expecting
their second child.
“It was one episode, one episode
where Lincoln gets blown up, and it
was open-ended as to whether or not
I’d be back,” Gabel recalls, speaking
by telephone from Vancouver,
British Columbia, where Fringe is taped. “I waited through
that summer to see if I’d be back. They eventually called and I
was available, and I was really happy to do it. But I only knew
about the Alt-Lincoln at that point.” “As they called me in for
more episodes,” he continues, “I started to think, ‘Hey, everyone seems to have a doppelganger. I wonder if I’ll have one?’
And then I finally got to have one too. It was perfect for me
because, in many ways, he was the opposite of my original
character. For an actor, it’s just so much fun to get to play two
very different sides of yourself.”
“The show, for me, brings up that nature-versus-nurture
question,” the actor continues. “My feeling is that both
Lincolns have the same nature, but they’ve each been nurtured
in different ways. As a result, one has more confidence than
the other. Also one has more confidence in his ability to think
scientifically and strategically, and one has more confidence in
his ability to be bold and courageous and get things done.”
“And this year, getting to be a regular, is amazing,” Gabel
adds. “There aren’t a lot of great sci-fi shows out there, and I’m
“S
a huge science nerd. So getting to show
up every week and explore the multiverse and all these strange scientific
concepts that are literally on the
fringes of what science is capable of
thinking of nowadays, it’s a real
thrill.”
Gabel is an easygoing, chatty conversationalist, but he becomes far
less voluble when discussing the
specifics of his show’s fourth season.
Fringe’s producers covet secrecy
and surprise above all else, and
Gabel
won’t be
the one to
spill any
m a j o r
beans.
“Peter
(Joshua
Jackson)
is
somewhere, and we
don’t really know
where, and so Lincoln
becomes a character
through which the
audience can view
everything from a new
perspective,” the actor
says cautiously. “So, if
you haven’t watched
Fringe before, Lincoln’s a
great character to latch
onto, to kind of understand things and ask the question, ‘What the heck is happening here?’ You can catch
up with the show through his eyes.”
“For people who are fans,” Gabel continues, “you really
get to understand the circumstances of the Butterfly Effect
that is Peter’s existence and what happens if he’s taken out of
the equation. His absence is most likely temporary, but what
happens to the universe? How does everything change?
What is the cascading effect of his no longer being a part of
that equation?”
“Lincoln, in some capacities, will fill that role, and then
eventually he’ll come to supplement it.”
That seems cryptic enough, but really Gabel is touching on
only one of the main conceits of Season 4. Fringe will, in
essence, get the reboot treatment, with the events of the first
three seasons and the actions of Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv),
Walter Bishop (John Noble), Broyles (Lance Reddick) and
Astrid (Jasika Nicole) occurring in a Peter-less world – as the
mysterious and ever-present Observers look on.
“There aren’t a lot of great
sci-fi shows out there, and
I’m a huge science nerd. So
getting to show up every week
and explore the multiverse
and all these strange
scientific concepts that are
literally on the fringes of what
science is capable of thinking
of nowadays, it’s a real thrill”

My dog is the only man in my life: Seyfried Bradley Cooper has no time for love
ACTRESS Amanda Seyfried says her dog is the “only man” in her life
and she doesn’t have time for romance. The 25-year-old was recently linked to sports entrepreneur Franck Raharinosy and real estate
executive Andrew Joblon. When asked whether she is looking for a
man, Seyfried told OK! magazine: “Oh, nothing at all right now. My
mind is on my dog. He’s my best friend. I love him. I think of him
and only him. I don’t like to be out late because I just want to go
home to my dog.”
ACTOR Bradley Cooper says his working commitments
leave no time for romance and insists he is currently single. The 36-year-old was recently linked to actress Olivia
Wilde and singer Jennifer Lopez. “I’m filming The Place
Beyond The Pines at the moment with Ryan Gosling in
New York, so that’s taking up a lot of my time. It’s really
exciting, but it doesn’t leave much time for a relationship,”
contactmusic.com quoted Cooper as saying.

Let’s get Pore-fect
Beauty
guide
- Do not pick or squeeze pimples as this will only spread the infection making you look worse.
- Avoid using harsh abrasives and soap on your face. It can aggravate skin pore enlargement and lead to more acne.
- Keep your face free of excess oils as it keeps your pores clean and healthy.
- Use cleansers and toners that are mild and enriched with AHAS (Alpha Hyrdoxy acids). They help keep the acid mantle undisturbed whilst at the same time doesn’t make your skin look shiny.
- Use exfoliating agents such as a topical retinoid to remove any excess dead skin cells that accumulate around the pore.
- Protect your skin from the sun as it will reduce the enlargement and clogging of pores.
- Rub a block of ice on the affected area as it helps in decreasing the pore size.
- The presence of oil and dirt in the pores make it more obvious. Hence, exfoliate your skin to keep these culprits at bay.
- Always remember to wash off the make-up before retiring to bed, enabling the skin to breathe through.

The new upscale wipes are

deodorant. They remove nail

ANT to simplify your beauty routine?
Wish you could zoom through airport
security without a Ziploc bag of little bottles? Perhaps it’s time to revisit the wipe.
No, not the moist, lemony towelette you
use to degrease your fingers after gnawing on hot wings.
That’s the old wipe. The new wipe is bigger, softer and
engineered to do the work of nearly any bottled beauty
product.
These upscale wipes are infused with sunscreen, selftanner, hair serum, deodorant. They remove nail polish,
dirt, maybe even wrinkles. And they are becoming ubiquitous as brands scramble to satisfy consumer demand.
“A year ago they weren’t as mainstream and available
for multiple purposes,” said Tracy Ogden, a spokeswoman
for Amazon.com’s Health and Personal Care, and Beauty
divisions, where a search for beauty wipes turns up
about 800 results. “Now customers can buy wipes for anything.”
Are these towelettes a minimalist’s dream, or expensive
Wet Naps? Your intrepid reporter tested an all-wipe beauty routine to find out.
Given the season, I had to try sunscreen. Keeping a few
wipes in my tote bag might prevent burns during alfresco
brunches and impromptu strolls. And packing for vacations would be much simpler: no more playing chemist in
the bathroom, siphoning lotion into teeny travel bottles
that inevitably begin leaking somewhere over the Atlantic
Ocean.
“This is a game changer,” my brother declared from a
beach chair as he rubbed an arm with a Doctor T’s
Supergoop! SPF 30(PLUS) Sunscreen Swipe. Goodbye,
messy lotions that turn his olive skin Kabuki white. I liked
Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare’s Powerful Sun Protection SPF
30 towelettes because they felt damper. After all, another
advantage that sunscreen wipes have over lotion is that
they’re refreshing. One member of our sunbathing party
even used a Shady Wipes Daily Sun Protection wipe with
SPF 30 to whisk away sweat as we departed the beach.
(The brand makes “after-sun” wipes, but they emit an
earthy scent you’d expect to emanate from a Catskills hillside, not your body.)
Facial wipes, intended to remove makeup, have also
become common, offered by brands like Philosophy, MAC,
the Body Shop and Ole Henriksen. Be cautious if you have sensitive skin,
though. Even wipes claiming to
be gentle stung my eyes.
And
my
nose.
Towelettes meant to
smell of fruit
often smell like candy or dessert liqueur. One night I
emerged from the bathroom smelling like SweeTarts.
Another night I climbed into bed smelling like a
Creamsicle. A third evening, I was indistinguishable from
limoncello.
Comodynes Make-Up Remover for all skin types was an
exception. Made in Barcelona, it smells fresh and didn’t
irritate my skin. Inspired, I also tried Comodynes Easy
Peeling New Face Effect wipes, to exfoliate. Never mind
whether that accomplished anything. Tiny rough bumps
all over the wipe felt invigorating, like a massage. The
company also makes wipes to apply self-tanner. Other
wipes that didn’t chafe my skin include Neutrogena’s
Night Calming Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes
and Biore’s Makeup Removing Towelettes (which ought to
be larger).
Body wipes also tend to smell strange and can be reminiscent of the ones used on babies. Yet I was pleasantly
surprised by the futuristic-sounding Nathan Human
Propulsion Laboratories Power Shower Refreshing Wipes.
The package says the wipes are for people – and gym
equipment. I was unenthused about cleaning myself with
a product also meant for a StairMaster, but I can’t argue
with the results.
One Saturday, I slicked on a Ms. & Mrs. Deodorant
Towelette, a refill for the brand’s diminutive emergency
kits. I’m giving the wipe a passing grade considering it
was 88 degrees and no one recoiled from me. Was it as
effective as a roll-on, stick or spray? No. In a pinch,
though, it beats the alternative. The Ms. & Mrs. brand
makes other wipes, all of which come in shiny silver packets so you won’t mistake them for the no-frills wipes of
yesteryear (though you might mistake them for condoms).
I also tried the brand’s nail polish remover. A thick wipe
slightly bigger than a stick of gum easily erased several
coats of polish, making it ideal for tropical getaways and
on-the-go touch-ups.
When shopping for wipes, check the labels if you want
to avoid brands that were tested on animals or contain
paraben preservatives. Also, many wipes are not
biodegradable; some that are include Josie Maran and Yes
to Carrots.
Wipe packs cost anywhere from $3 to $34. Whether
they’re a smart buy depends on how many you use and
how often (you’d need scores of sunscreen wipes to protect every inch of yourself all summer). You’ll typically get
more for your buck with a bottle.
Will I be packing wipes when I travel?
You bet. Will I suddenly begin keeping
a supply on hand to wipe away
life’s messier moments? Nah.
Sometimes it’s good to get a
little sand in your hair.

Honda flies high
THE auto industry’s renaissance company finally hits the skies. Honda, one of the world’s largest-volume producers of internal-combustion engines, is
a famously multifaceted organisation. Even as it launches the vitally important new Civic, the company is celebrating a milestone in its mission to
become the only automaker to manufacture airplanes. After several delays, the first FAA-conforming example of the $4.5 million HondaJet has begun
test flights, achieving a top speed of 489 mph and moving a step closer to production. The radical design was imagined long ago by Honda Aircraft
Company CEO Michimasa Fujino and claims structural and aerodynamic advantages. The lightweight composite fuselage features natural laminar
flow, and the wings are aluminum with single-piece skins. The engines are perched above the wings, as on the unsuccessful 1970s VFW-Fokker 614
regional airliner, which reduces structural weight, protects against debris ingestion, and allows for shorter, lighter landing gear. Honda expects as
much as 20 percent fuel-efficiency superiority versus conventional jets. Honda’s work on jets began in 1986, when the company worked with
Mississippi State University to build the MH-02 the first-ever all-composite light business jet which took flight in 1993. There are more than 100
advance orders. As it did with motorcycles, and then with cars, Honda is starting this adventure with a carefully thought-out, well-engineered, and
thoroughly tested product that we expect to have an influence on the aircraft industry disproportionately larger than its modest production volume.

Honda’s mission: To become the only

MERCEDES-BENZ 190 SL
COLIN RYAN
NYT SYNDICATE
I
F there is a point where engineering transcends its nuts and
bolts to become art, it’s right
here. This is, or was, a ’61
Mercedes-Benz 190 SL. Its
owner loved the lines (who wouldn’t?), but wanted a car he could just
jump into and drive any time he felt
like it, while retaining that vibe of a
classic machine.
This could only be achieved by
ingenuity, hard work and a lot of
money. Much of the first two was
supplied by Sean Dell of Hot Rods &
Custom Stuff, based in Escondido,
California; an operation well regarded by those in the know.
To be a reliable car, it couldn’t have
kept the original 50-year-old, 1.9-litre
four-potter under the hood, which
was never rated that highly in the first
place. “We were looking at different
engines,” says Dell. “We even considered an LS7. Then the MercedesBenz twin-turbo V12 was mentioned.” One of the cars with this 6.0litre beauty is the SL 600.
Trying to fit a V12 into the space
allocated for an inline-four was never
going to fly, so Dell went the other
way: rebuild the old car around a new
engine. “Once I figured out we could
do it, we got an ’04 SL 600, with only
9,000 miles on the clock, and cut the
body away.”
Easier said than done. To take the
newer metal’s place, the 190’s bodywork had to be widened by 6 inches,
and another 8 inches were eased into
the length, in five separate places
along each flank. Naturally, things
like the grille and bumpers were no
longer the right size. And the door
handles seemed out of proportion. So
replacements were carved out of billet aluminum. The grille was fashioned from a 640-pound chunk of the
stuff by Evod Industries of Fallbrook,
California, the fabricators who also
made the hood vents, bumpers and
door handles.
It was a similar story for the windshield frame, which also required
custom glass. At least the retractable
three-layer fabric roof was OEM. And
many of the modern SL’s amenities
could be retained, such as the pedals,
e-brake, electrics and wiring harnesses, gauges, air conditioning and even
the satellite navigation system.
Behind the ’60s lenses of the front
and rear lights is ’04 SL illumination,
subjected to heavy adaptation. Sadly,
the airbags had to go, since they hadn’t been invented when

of terra cotta” hide was used to fashion a bespoke luggage set that fills the
trunk so elegantly; credit for the
leather work goes to Armando’s Auto
Upholstery of Los Angeles.
The 20-inch wheels are another
custom contribution from Evod.
Their three-pointed star emblems
over the hubs are attached in such a
way that they always remain upright.
A little touch of gangster can sometimes be a good thing.
It’s usual for builders to estimate a
time of completion that will turn out
to be laughably optimistic. From the
outset, Dell and company reckoned
this project would take 18 months. It
was done and dusted in 13, just in
time for the 2010 SEMA Show in Las
Vegas, despite the “thousands upon
the village that puts the A into AMG.
It was almost predestined that Feyhl
would become an apprentice there,
going on to become first a master
mechanic and then technical director
of AMG’s North American headquarters. He is godfather and midwife to
the famed Hammer sports sedan of
the mid-’80s.
An ideal choice, then, to conjure
some more power from an engine
that leaves the factory with 493 hp at
5000 rpm and 590 lb-ft of torque at
1800 rpm. The ECU and TCU (transmission control unit) were both
reflashed with software developed inhouse, and the turbo system was augmented by Renntech’s intercooler
upgrade program, which includes a
new pump that handles a greater
flow of coolant, plus all the attendant
plumbing and electrical connections.
The stock turbochargers run at 14.5
psi; Renntech boosted that to 21 psi.
Measured at the wheels, the new output is 650 hp at 5500 rpm and 785 lbft at 2000 rpm, quite enough to get
someone into a heck of a lot of trouble while enjoying every second.
Mercedes-Benz is a company
known for over-engineering. For
example, the five-speed automatic
transmission that usually accompanies this V12 can handle its torque
and then some. But Feyhl’s AMG
background couldn’t stop him from
leaving things alone. “With increased
performance, it becomes necessary to
improve the driveline components,”
says Dan Steinhauser, designer at
Renntech, “to ensure maximum
power goes to the driven wheels without
transmission
slippage.”
Steinhauser says this cannot be done
by software alone, but with a
mechanical upgrade to the clutch
packs, as well as a complete teardown
and rebuild using new gaskets seals,
O-rings, electrical connectors and a
new transmission pan filter.
“This allows us to maximise the
amount of friction materials within
the transmission and, in turn, the
amount of power that can be transmitted.” He claims the work
improves shift response and shift
timing and provides better drivability
under extreme conditions, without
sacrificing around-town comfort.
Steinhauser reckons the updated
trans can handle more than 800 hp
and 1000 lb-ft of torque.
Out at the rear axle is a locking limited-slip differential, developed in
conjunction with specialists OS
Giken. “This LSD will lock 100 percent and provide torque equally to
each powered wheel, for stable
straight-line runs,” says Steinhauser.
“When exiting a corner, the transition
to the full lock position is smooth and
predictable. This gives the vehicle
better traction and stability.”
The suspension enjoys new toe
links and adjustable camber bushings from the Renntech drawing
board, along with a digital lowering
module (DLM): the V3. “The DLM
V3 allows the vehicle to return to its
factory ride height at a preset
speed,” says Steinhauser. “This
removes the need to be aligned after
lowering and allows the factory
speed lowering to still occur as normal. The user can maintain the factory longevity and still have the lowered look at low speeds.”

A new man in Alexa Chung’s life?
Cheryl Cole turns shoe designer
MODEL Alexa Chung, who recently split from her boyfriend of
four years, Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner, is reportedly
dating singer Theo Hutchcraft. Chung has been secretly dating
Hutchcraft for the past few weeks. “It’s still early days but
Theo(Hutchcraft) is really keen on Alexa(Chung). They met at the
American music festival Coachella in April and Theo has been
spending a lot of time in New York, where Alexa lives,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted a source as saying. “They share the same interests - music and fashion - and get on really well. But the relationship is still raw and they’re not putting too much pressure on
each other to make it work at this stage,” the source added.
SINGER Cheryl Cole has collaborated with fashion website
StylistPick.com to create her first shoe collection. “We are
thrilled to be working with Cheryl (Cole). She is the style
icon and is amazingly warm, a quality that has made her the
nation’s favourite,” femalefirst.oc.uk quoted Juliet WarkentinStylist Pick’s chief creative officer- as saying. “We believe
that the launch will have a huge fashion impact; establishing
fashion’s greatest influence as a major force in fashion
design and further democratising fashion,” she added. The
limited edition footwear line will hit stores in December.

STORY posted on Parade magazine’s website on Thursday in which Brad Pitt talks
about his life with ex-wife Jennifer Aniston
put the actor in damage control mode, saying his words had been misinterpreted.
The 47-year-old Pitt said in a profile by Parade magazine posted on the publication’s website that he is now a
“satisfied man” in his relationship with Angelina Jolie.
The Moneyball star compares his new life with Jolie,
with whom he is raising 6 kids, favourably to the roughly
five years he spent married to Aniston.
“It became very clear to me that I was intent on trying
to find a movie about an interesting life, but I wasn’t living an interesting life myself,” Pitt told Parade.
“I think that my marriage (to Aniston) had something
to do with it. Trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn’t,” he added.
Those quotes were interpreted by many media outlets
as meaning Pitt thought Aniston was uninteresting. But
the A-list actor sought to clarify himself in a statement
issued later by his talent agency.

Pitt and Friends star Aniston were married in 2000,
and he has largely avoided talking about her since their
2005 divorce.
In the magazine interview, Pitt also said he spent the
1990s “trying to hide out” from celebrity. “I started to get
sick of myself sitting on a couch, holding a joint, hiding
out,” he said.
Although Pitt and Oscar winner Jolie have been together for more than five years, the actor has said they will not
marry until gay marriage is widely legalised. He is sticking to that.
“We’ll get married when everyone can,” Pitt told
Parade.
The Parade interview with Pitt, who stars in the
upcoming baseball drama Moneyball, is published in the
Sunday’s edition of the magazine.
Heidi Klum deemed most

FTER a hiatus, Soha Ali Khan
is returning to the big screen
again. A musical, Soundtrack
features her along with
Rajeev Khandewal, both of
whom are playing two matured youngsters who are physically disabled. Due to
such characterisation, Soha gets emotional as
she remembers how her dad too had fought
quite a few battles as he challenged all adversities pertaining to physical handicap and still
moved up in his career.
“My dad had lost one eye but still went on to overcome all obstacles and ended up captaining the Indian
cricket team. Everyone said that it would be impossible for
him to even face a single delivery but he managed due to his
strong conviction,” Soha says with pride in her voice.
“I took a cue from that and approached my character in a similar manner. This young woman I play has a speech impediment but then her
other senses are well in place to allow her to live her life happily. It is
with this confidence that I motivate Rajeev’s character as well who is
quite disillusioned after finding out that he wasn’t able to hear well,”
she says.
Detailing the film’s setting further, Soha says, “Audience would see
Rajeev struggle with his disability while this girl continues to motivate
him to live his life independently. Once Rajeev is inspired enough, he
learns how to read lips and use that as a tool to communicate with others. On the other hand I would come across as someone free spirited
enough to be this perfectly normal fun loving confident woman who
is completely bohemian. She uses sign language and other expressions and gestures so that she is totally independent.”
Directed by debutant Neerav Ghosh, Soundtrack releases on
September 30th.

ORMER Miss India and actress Sayali
Bhagat says she doesn’t understand talk
about girls refusing to sport a bikini in
Dhoom 3, adding she would gladly wear one
for a role.
“I have no inhibitions about looking sexy. I am quite
comfortable with my body. I want to wear bikinis. Sayali
Bhagat in a bikini would definitely add value to any film,”
she said in a statement.
“I work out regularly and have one of the hottest bodies in B-town. I am fed up of playing the good girl on
screen. Now I am looking for a change of image and
would love to do sexy roles like Bipasha in Dhoom 2. I
don’t understand all this talk about girls refusing to sport
a bikini in Dhoom 3. I’d gladly do it and look super hot
too,” she said.
“But sadly, I am only getting performance-oriented
roles Halla Bol and Jail where I am dressed from top to
toe. Even in my next movie Ghost opposite Shiney Ahuja,
I play a doctor. Even in Tinu Verma’s This Weekend, I
play a tomboy except for that one song with Rajneesh
Duggal wherein I have
donned a sexy orange
bikini. Thank god for
small mercies,” she
added.
